I like how this enables you to hear the different voices more clearly. They are separated by timbre as well as pitch, unlike an organ which can sound like mush w complex interplay. Or maybe I'm just a partial old trumpeter. )
I TOTALLY agree!! Full disclosure: I am a euphonium player, but I really believe that many of Bach's organ works are much better realized by wind instruments!
I used to borrow the vhs of this concert from the library all the time when I was a kid. When I saw them live for the first time I cried because I was so happy. So many good memories here!
This piece was my introduction to The Canadian Brass. It was also my very first Bach piece. Thirty years later, I'm still grateful for both! I played the Tuba (God's instrument) in High School and needless to say, this piece was (still is) so much a part of me that without even looking for the sheet music, as soon as I learned to play the instrument and figure out the notes, I belted out the theme to this fugue without even trying. (how about that for Professor Harold Hill's 'Think System')
I think no one can imitate their sound. Nowadays, all the people have sounds that are round and mellow, unlike theirs that seems to cut through the air like a knife. I LOVE THEM!!!
If you thumbs downed this that's embarrassing for you, unless you were literally a musician who felt slighted for not being in this yourself, for shame. Free and fantastic thank you so much for sharing!
I saw these guys live at Davies Hall in '89. It's really just amazing. I played tuba then, and basically I just messed around compared to these guys. The best part is when they position themselves around the hall and play. They fill the hall just fine, whether they're together like this, or separated.
FINALLY! ive been looking for this one for AGES! couldnt remember what it was called although the tempo is a tad faster than i remember. nevertheless, well done, gents!
I have been currently practicing the arranged piece of this and this song is amazing and a slow song but is pretty difficult. I gotta play this at my spring in May with the rest of the woodwind players. I gotta say challenge accepted :)
half of yall are hating. why? they are better musicians than most, if not all of you. dont be judgemental if you cant play it better yourself. its played amazingly on the instruments that are using.
@sonicgamerkingTV i thought so to. but no. His name is Gene Watts. One of the founders along side of Chuck Daellenbach(tuba) and Ron Romm(Trumpet(the one with the beard))
Seeing this video has kindled a conviction in me that: _this piece would sound awesome performed with any instrument combination imaginable,_ with the one (1) condition that there is an actual attempt to make it work.
@Jollywong9 No no no. :46 is the French Horn. There's a trumpet trill at :48, the trumpet holds the trill longer. I think ff808 was asking about the trill in the melody, which is the horn. The trumpet has the countersubject at that specific part. And again, the trill at 1:28 is obviously the French Horn, who has the same countersubject as the trumpet did at :48.
@crazyco95 actually, musicians who play blow instruments have a trick where they store the air in their mouth and keep blowing while filling their lungs with air, with their mouths STILL blowing the air inside, so they keep a breathing cicle ^^
I've always thought using any part other than the tips of your fingers can cause damage to valves, especially tuba valves considering how much heavier the spring is
Occasionally, when the clarity of valved instrument is needed, a euphonium may be used. Ever more rare is a trombonium. Check out their canon in d. They use a euphonium.
Does anyone knows which kind of trumpet the first part is using? I'm trying with Bb piccolo but the position with the fourth valve are so hard and he doesn't seem to use them
Anyone know if there is actually a piano arrangement of this piece, all I keep finding are either ensembles or organ stuff. Great job on the brass group, I may actually try arranging this for a group of saxophones too, been wanting to get into more ensemble material.
It's a shame the recording quality isn't better for this masterful preformence.
Here, here. Even in my top of the range Sony headphones it still sounds as if its an old record played on a speaker blown 60’s Dansette record player.
@@jeromek2125 yeah the lack of lowend presence is killing me
Ensemble renditions are the best way to hear the different voices without being confused if you were to play it on a keyboard.
True, though Charlie Brusquini does such a good job on organ that it's possible to follow each line. ruclips.net/video/ZdCuA7SbzaM/видео.html

Arrgh! Let us commoners enjoy this wonderful music without the technical analysis!!
Ronin Iscandar It does that so well, it sounds like instruments having a conversation gradually evolving into a mild form of bickering.
I TOTALLY agree!!
Full disclosure: I am a euphonium player, but I really believe that many of Bach's organ works are much better realized by wind instruments!
Yeah I prefer this to organ honestly, fugues might sound epic on their original instrument but it does get very muddled
The arrangement was done by Ronald Romm and is available in the Canadian Brass online store.

Just Great! Great tempo to play it at. Thanks Canadian Brass!
years later this still slaps. This is my favorite performance of this fugue. OG canadian brass was different
Extremely talented guys. Well trained, too. Thanks a lot.
Nothing could sound finer...Thank You!!....
Truly a phenomenal performance.
Best concert I ever saw was the Canadian Brass at Roy Thompson Hall.
I wish they'd tour more in Toronto
In this recording Chuck is using a CC tuba.
got to love the trumpet

Ron Romm and Fred Mills (RIP)are awesome. Got the pleasure of meeting these guys.
Extraordinary . Thanks to Bach and the recording artists . Bach never ceases to amaze .
One of those pieces that you can just hit replay over and over and you won't get tired of it
I think no one can imitate their sound. Nowadays, all the people have sounds that are round and mellow, unlike theirs that seems to cut through the air like a knife. I LOVE THEM!!!
5 of the most legendary musicians to ever grace this planet with their presence!!!
THEY GO SO FAST I LOVE IT :
If you thumbs downed this that's embarrassing for you, unless you were literally a musician who felt slighted for not being in this yourself, for shame. Free and fantastic thank you so much for sharing!

That french horn tho!!! 0:45, 1:27, 2:03 just cut thru
French horn for the win!
lip trill 😎
This is one of my favorite classical pieces ever!!! Love more than words can describe!!! Fantastic job!!!
Sounds wonderful! The harmony together, the performance... Just wow!
FINALLY! ive been looking for this one for AGES! couldnt remember what it was called although the tempo is a tad faster than i remember. nevertheless,
well done, gents!
I honestly don't know how you could dislike this
The tuba part is written in Concert pitch.
now i go practice little fugue while i`m still motivated after watching this guys
. . . Always loved those gus . . . beautiful . .
i can't tell if this is actually the 80's or what canada still looks like...love the CB and love this tune!

Great talent! What a gifted group of individuals. Your new work is very good as well; Keep playing!
this is the only thing keeping me sane during quarantine

Tuba!!
How do tounge all those notes on brass I thought it was only possible on woodwind good job🇨🇦
My mom has this on her Victor Borge Live tape! 😊
The greatest Brass Quintet.
CROWWWWNNNN
Best Canadian Brass formation EVER!!
Magnifico!
Before we go jumping to conclusions, let's be clear. This is in concert G minor, not g minor for differently tuned instruments
Genios Totales!!!!!
piccolo trumpet, cornet, french horn, tenor trombone, tuba (probably BBb w/ four valves)
we've chose this arrangment for uil s&e but we wont do it because we can't find the time to practice together

It's called flutter, it's like a tremolo for strings for played by brass or wood wind instruments
@crazyco95

@Jollywong9 The 1:28 trill is the French Horn
Sounds like beautiful chaos.
Man this is badass
מוסיקה נהדרת מיקצועית מעולה ואהובה עלי .......
It's a lip trill. It's a difficult technique, but the partials on the horn are so close together that you don't need to alternate fingerings for it.
I don't want this to be an ongoing argument, so if you want to think it's F minor, go ahead. But it's titled "Fugue in G Minor" for a reason
Are the best !!
@curiosity55 The theme in a fugue [not a song] is called a subject.
@dgeorge54 Sorry but the horn player is Martin Hackleman in this video!
@BARITONESWAGJOE Brass quintet is written for trombone, not euphonium.
Hellz yeah!
It's actually a short bell E-flat trumpet, not to be mistaken as a piccolo. Easy mistake.
Playing this for UIL S&E as a low brass quartet
Quite some chops these chaps have.
yes he is I have the music for the french horn lol
It might have been a lip trill which is a trill in between partials, so he wouldn't be moving his fingers.
I've always thought using any part other than the tips of your fingers can cause damage to valves, especially tuba valves considering how much heavier the spring is

I love their ceramic lined mouth pieces. Or I believe its a ceramic lip plate?
1:50 is he... quadtuple tounging??
That's just a trill my friend
Lol
Ur dumb. Thats a trill🤦♂️
trill bruh
lol ur dumb he's trilling
JP 2018 LETS GO!! #HeyGuys

@kingtaythe2 that is what is called an "eargasm"
R.I.P
Truly God inspired - LOVED IT!!!!
yea
Does anyone knows which kind of trumpet the first part is using? I'm trying with Bb piccolo but the position with the fourth valve are so hard and he doesn't seem to use them
is he circular breathing? I think he is but im not sure. Amazing!!!!!
yet 1 organ over powers all these instruments through how loud it is and what noises it can make
@ahgblopes Its supposed to be played really legato. Listen to the original organ arrangement.
This song isn't actually too bad to arrange, there's first and second primary parts (high instruments), then an alto part and 1 or 2 tenor/bass parts
LOVE IY EPIC
@KegPatcha It's spelled Oxygen.
Anyone know if there is actually a piano arrangement of this piece, all I keep finding are either ensembles or organ stuff. Great job on the brass group, I may actually try arranging this for a group of saxophones too, been wanting to get into more ensemble material.
What do the tuba player and trombone player have on their mouthpieces?
2:24
no pondria me gusta... pondria me encanta
LOVE IT EPIC:-D
Why would the person be joking? They don't have much information yet and they want to know.
Crown
If your going to disrespect someone at least get the instrumentation correct. Ron is playing a piccolo trumpet
Why the low brass mouthpieces white on the rim
Is that Czar Nicholas playing the trumpet at the beginning?
Listen to a Mozart horn concerto sometimes us horn players always have to lip trill or any baroque music.
"Applause."
good!赞!
Strange. I've seen this entire concert on video and I swear they were wearing the white shoes, but here they do appear to be in black shoes.
I think they wore white ones for the Tribute to the Ballet part of the tape.
I dont believe this was too fast. Perhaps the beginning was, but otherwise they nailed it
What do you mean exaclty, "what canada still looks like"? You think we don't have decent recording technology here?
