Good post, but keep in mind there was NO other cycling EVER seen in the US before this, except a few seconds of Olympic highlights. So for us on this side of the pond to get a full half-hour of a race like this on TV was something special. Looking back, it is hokey, but John Tesh gets a lot of credit as he loved the sport and helped promote it in the US and get it noticed as best he could. These videos thus have a lot of nostalgia to old guys like me.

Surprising - campy and hokey - the CBS years won a few Emmy's for this coverage

This was the race that begun my lifetime love of cycling, seeing a mud covered Greg LeMond at the finish was it for me.

Vanderaerden chased by Sean Kelly, Greg Lemond and Marc Madiot, with classic 1980s synth backing and the terrible American television announcers of the era. Everybody soaked in mud by the finish. Wonderful final interview with Lemonf. A great video.

in the day, the early days of cycling being shown on US television, at least we had SOMETHING. We may have the entire TdF on OLN/Versus/new-name-in-2009? now, but the production that went into mashing the music beds to the commentary is still a warm feeling to me.
The music beds were from John Tesh AND Yanni.
Before iPods I recorded the audio to cassette and cycled to these highlights. You may dismiss Tesh and Yanni as New Age hacks, but their uptempo music was and is wonderful to cycle to.

I'll take the classics anytime over the grand Tours, especially with bad weather conditions. Roubaix, Liege, Fleche.......those events are similar to watching a killer boxing match!

Amen to that. He owned Paris-Roubaix at this time (think he won the previous and following years edition).

I thought Kelly had won that one 1985. I'm Irish but fair play to Marc Madiot. What a monolitic race to win, and it's nice for the French too. It's nice for wins to be distributed out around different nations.

A fair assumption, at that time Kelly was winning almost anything worth winning outside the GTs and the worlds...

if only all cycling coverage was dramatised like this

      Hmm...I don't know.
Even though the dynamics have totally changed with the accursed power meters, I really really don't like such overbearing music.
Other than that I would agree with you! The narrator does a very good job at dramatising the battles and the duels going on out on the road.
