    This film won many Oscars, including Best Picture, best Actress, and Best Actor. It's of note that Sir Anthony Hopkins won as one of the winning actors with the least actual screen time. Likely because his presence was felt even at times he wasn't even on the screen.

    There is a sequel called "Hannibal" and though it is often not as highly regarded, i still recommend checking it out. Sadly, Jodie Foster does not return to play her character but it still has a great cast and is directed by Ridley Scott . i feel its definitely worth a watch.

    The late, great Charles Napier played the guard who Lecter transformed into a butterfly. He was a favorite actor of Jonathan Demme and had roles in many of his films, including Philadelphia, Something Wild, and Married to the Mob. You may have recognized him, as he was the lead singer of the Good Ole Boys in The Blues Brothers.

    An early example of Jodie Foster's magic is "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane" (1977). It's wonderfully creepy, and Ms. Foster is captivating as the titular character.
    I really enjoyed your reaction to this flawless classic!

  • @gggooding
    @gggooding 6 месяцев назад +6

    The cinematography - which you spoke of, sir:
    Almost _no one_ picks up on this. Whenever a character is looking *directly* into camera... they're talking _to_ Clarice.
    In the reverse shots, Jodie Foster is looking *slightly* OFF camera.
    Like the danger of Hannibal within the story this is meant to get "inside your head." We, the audience, subconsciously _become_ Clarice as the camera slowly pulls us into the abyss.
    Dir Demme pulled the same "trick" in his Manchurian Candidate remake as well as Philadelphia. Demme's subtle brilliance cannot be overstated.
    RIP, genius.

    "A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."
    Eww... Fava beans. Gross. 😝
    Fun Fact: The rules for speaking with Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is the same as the rules for speaking with Ethan Powell in Instinct (1999), a role also played by Hopkins.
    Awards Milestone Fact: This is one of three movies to win the top five Oscars: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. The others are It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975).
    What Script Fact: Jodie Foster claims that during the first meeting between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, Sir Anthony Hopkins's mocking of her southern accent was improvised on the spot. Foster's horrified reaction was genuine since she felt personally attacked. She later thanked Hopkins for generating such an honest reaction.
    Law Enforcement Cooperation Fact: The real-life FBI's Behavioral Science Unit assisted in the making of this movie. The FBI saw it as a potential recruiting tool to hire more female agents. They were very impressed by this movie's accuracy in depicting criminal investigations, serial killers, and their victims. However, they disagreed with Clarice (Jodie Foster) discovering Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) on her own, because inexperienced agents would never be sent out alone on dangerous assignments.

    Not sure if someone mentioned this yet or not, but in the book the handcuff key Hannibal had made was actually a very methodical years long project he had been working on. For the movie’s purposes, they simply made you think that there was someway he was able to get a hold of the pen.

    1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real.
    2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released.
    3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film.
    4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice.
    5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late😇 Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in "Rambo First Blood II". A great first time/share.
    6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony.
    7. In the book Crawford did have "a thing" for Clarice.
    8. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice
    9. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.

    This movie was the first movie I ever saw in a theater by myself. I was really into psychology at the time, and this was my favorite movie for a long time too. Still is in my top 10. I have a death’s head moth tattoo, as well as Dali’s “In Voluptus Mors,” the skull made up of 7 naked women that makes up the moth’s face on the movie poster. The lambs were the victims of Bill. They were being slaughter, silenced, and skinned. Clarice had a need to save victims. That’s why she was so fearless and determined. Hannibal needed to know why this small woman was who she was. She intrigued him. Most would not have come back after the first visit.

  • @davidrichards6509
    @davidrichards6509 6 месяцев назад

    Actor Ted Levine has appeared in at least 40 films over the years but his performance as Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs is not surprising THE role he is most remembered for
    In the opening sequence for the televised broadcast of The 64th Academy Awards f ollowing the release of this movie, comedy legend (and long time bff and "partner in crime" of Robin Williams...see their COMPLETELY unscripted and HIGH-LARRY-US Friends cold open cameo) long running Oscars ceremony host Billy Crystal had himself wheeled onto the stage in his full tuxedo strapped to a handcart and wearing a facemask similar to the one in the "Memphis transfer" scene in Silence of the Lambs.

    That zoom in to his hand holding the component from the pen (a key, for the handcuffs) - it's reminiscent of the scene in Notorious, with the zoom in the the wine cellar key in Ingrid Bergman's hand, to be given to Cary Grant's secret agent. Good stuff.

    I think Anthony Hopkins had something like 16 or 17 minutes of total screentime in this movie, but he absolutely *chews* every scene he's in.

    • @d.-_-.b
      @d.-_-.b 5 месяцев назад

      The exact wording is "appearing on screen for little more than 16 minutes" which reasonable people take as how long he's in the movie for (you don't win an Oscar strictly for "on screen" time), and by my DVD copy that translates to 34 minutes 54 seconds including voice time as he enters then exits each of the ten scenes he is in.
      What makes the figure believable to be fair, other than how unfair it is to Hopkins by having reputable sites blindly repeat it without checking, is that Hannibal is completely absent for extended periods of the movie twice, once for almost 20 minutes and another for over 25 minutes. Also his first appearance isn't until almost 12 minutes in.
      Here's the breakdown from my DVD giving start - end timestamps = duration (running total):
      11:55 - 18:38 = 6:43 (6:43) "May I see your credentials?"
      26:54 - 30:20 = 3:26 (10:09) "Your bleeding has stopped."
      50:03 - 55:20 = 5:17 (15:26) "Quid pro quo"
      57:17 - 58:20 = 1:03 (16:29) "His first name is Louis"
      58:49 - 1:02:10 = 3:21 (19:50) "Where will it tickle you?"
      1:04:03 - 1:10:45 = 6:42 (26:32) "Good evening, Clarice."
      1:11:23 - 1:15:10 = 3:47 (30:19) "Mind the drawings please."
      1:16:52 - 1:19:31 = 2:39 (32:58) "Talk to him!"
      1:21:13 - 1:21:33 = 0:20 (33:18) "Pulse 84."
      1:47:26 - 1:49:02 = 1:36 (34:54) "I'm having an old friend for dinner."

The sequels are not great, IMO. What IS great is the streaming show "Hannibal," one of the most artistically beautiful shows ever produced. The acting is also first rate, and although difficult to believe, the Hannibal Lector played by Mads Mikkelsen is even better than Hopkin's. Mads did have a full three seasons to enact subtleties and nuances that feature films don't permit.

    You should really do a reaction to the movie "Hannibal Rising" that Anthony Hopkins is in as well. It tells the life story of Hannibal Lector & what made him the killer that he became.

    In response to your request for psychological thrillers I have three to recommend
    A BEAUTIFUL MIND
    PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
    THE SIXTH SENSE
    If you have already seen any one of these three you will have a good idea of what you will be getting in watching the other two. And I would love to hear your commentary on them.

    When people have seizures, they can swallow their tongues and die. People often use a spoon or something to hold their tongues down while help comes. Miggs was insane, so Hannibal probably drove him to spazz so that he choked on his tongue.
