Whenever I hear this song, I instantly think about all of the things I love about Dublin, my beloved native city. Grafton Street at Christmas, a walk along The Quays, the ducks in St Stephens Green, the Chesterfield elm trees at Phoenix Park. Let us hope that this wonderful man will rest in peace for all eternity. God bless Dublin, God bless Luke Kelly and God bless Ireland.
The tempo of this song not only fuels the meaning of each and every word, but resinates every single syllable with incredible emotional meaning. It's an absolute masterpiece. Luke puts his heart and soul into this version and in my opinion the ultimate listening. Unbelievable! Thank you original poster!
My God! Luke's voice is absolutely stunning. What a loss these boys are to all of us, we will not see their likes again. Rest easy lads, you've done us proud!
We wrote to Luke after hearing this version and asked him to sing it for us when we saw them in Camberly. To my supprise he read our letter out on stage then sung Raglan Road as only Luke can. God bless you Luke

A brilliant version indeed! Recorded live at the national stadium, south circular road, Dublin. Released on the live album, Hometown, 1971 or 72. The album is no longer available. 😪 Luke's voice is superb! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Several years ago when I first heard this song on a Chieftains album, I was searching my mind for where I heard this before...having not previously heard a recording. I finally deferred to my Mother and asked if Daddy had ever sung "Raglan Road." At 80+ years old, my Mother replied "your Father stood in the kitchen doorway and sang this after your sister's wedding (1971). Each time I listen to this song, it gives me chills, smiles and fond memories of my Dad even to this day.
Wow wow wow, what I would of given to see him sing that live! I have a Merlin banjo the same as the one Luke used for most of his career and he recorded this song with it, and it is my prized banjo. God bless Luke Ronnie Ciaran and Barney and thanks for the music.
This is the first version sang in 1972 by the greatest vocalist ever. Then comes many singers but the version by Luke is the unique. Luke took into Patrick feeling for younger girl Hilda and he stress the vocal so well and naturally. That why Luke Kelly the best vocalist ever.
i do not know why i listen to this it rips out my inards my whole goes goes , but it is so addicting what a voice no mixing just sheer beautiy . what a loss
I want to hear this song at my deathbed ,before I die ,before I move on to whatever afterlife there is in our world ,and When the Angel Woos the Clay ,He'd loose ,his wings at the dawn of a new Day ...
I heard this for this for the first time when I borrowed the LP Hometown! from my local library about 27 years ago. I'm still moved when I hear it now. A truly beautiful song sung by a master vocalist that is Luke Kelly.
Brilliant thanks. Luke was so outstanding. I was there that day, a late afternoon concert if I recall correctly. Barney took a nap on stage, flat out for a spell until a banjo solo was called by Ronnie !
Nobody should ever go near that song after hearing Luke Kelly sing it, It is the greatest combination of singer and song the world has ever known, God bless your soul Luke, you had plenty RIP,🇮🇪☘🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪☘🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪☘🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪☘
Why oh why isn't there a day of rememberance in Dublin. For Luke, for Ronnie and for Ciaran. They brought us and left us a legacy that many many of us will treasure all the days of our life. I personally haven't got what it takes to organise such a thing but would come and support it without fail.
Surprised each time I hit on one of your recordings kellyoneill. Thank you. I thought I had heard it all. What a voice. Would bring tears to your eyes and ever more admiration for such a fantastic singer.
Paddy Kavanagh the Poet composed this, Luke got together with him and put it to music. It was a marching song 'The Dawning of the Day". He slowed it down and came up with this master piece. The Army Number One Band plays the Marching version on State occasions.
Great restraint shown by the lads in the band, there. Some of the most boisterous individuals ever gathered together on stage. You could feel them almost bursting out like an armageddon of pixieness but they kept it down commendably. Probably transfixed by Liam's voice.
It sure was hilarious. Both that and realistic, cause I don't know about other people, but I've had it with the Hollywood hero. Ray comes to me as a young man who wants to be like the Hollywood hero but gravely underestimated the job, and after his first kill, it literally tears him apart. God I love that movie!
No one can sing raglan road like luke Kelly god bless him
Just Brilliant never see the likes of these GREAT LADS again Dubliners music will never Die.RIP Dublin Legends.
Pure perfection! Nobody should be allowed to be that talented! Great song! Great singer! 👍👍👍

The great words! I wish I´ll cam sometimes to Dublin and see Luke´s the best loved places. Let it be! :))

Thankfully you honestly recognised his honesty and didn't get the poke from the pig known as power .

This is the best version. I like the later studio version too, but this one has a special magic no other version can match.
Agree...a purity like crystal clear water!! It would bring you to tears. What a voice....
It’s a shame it’s not a better quality recording

Love this song brings a tear to me eye reminds me of times with a close friend who's not with us anymore..
Luke was a genius. I don't use the word lightly.
I heard this for this for the first time when I borrowed the LP Hometown! from my local library about 27 years ago. I'm still moved when I hear it now. A truly beautiful song sung by a master vocalist that is Luke Kelly.
There's no better ballad singer than Luke Kelly. Only Liam Clancy came within a mile of him. Go on, ya boy ya!
lovely voice top tune RIP luke kelly
Amazing beautiful Luke Kelly
So great a man.... Though I'm myself - my hat hat will be off to Luke for the rest of my life...
Legend
Brilliant thanks. Luke was so outstanding. I was there that day, a late afternoon concert if I recall correctly.
Barney took a nap on stage, flat out for a spell until a banjo solo was called by Ronnie !
Sometimes you just need a nap. The older folks take naps like the little ones, because they've lost the pretension of adulthood. ;D
Loved the way you put that
why would 6 people "unlike" this? I have to ask ye? Where would you ever get your joy?
Bas in Eirinn
Irelands greatest ever singer- end of!
Agree
every time I hear Luke's voice takes me back the early days of the "Edinburgh folk festival " ah great days
only man who can sing it
High Kings do a pretty good job, to be fair.

Thomas lagan They're very much influenced by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.

My soul cries .

I think God appointed Luke to sing this for us all - Nobody can compare after
Fantastic. !
Incredible
If ever you go to Dublin Town .....oh he was a quare wan I tell you !

On Ultimate Mode Luke Kelly When Everyone Isn't Compared To Him
good poem
thanks for posting. this is Luke at his best. was annoying turning the old LP over at this.
GO ON LUCKEEN
Think this is Lukes best version better than the one he sings on the tele on his own with lad with guitar.
I'm sure I saw Lukie in my dreams the other night, perhaps it was just an Angel....
"Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarted, Bruges might impress me. But I didn't, so... it doesn't."
That's How It Should Be Sung
Beautiful! I think kellyoneil posted this at some point in two pieces and the fade was far more annoying, but this is just fine, thanks.
@1980GERALD No better singer full stop!!
Luke Kelly can sing raglan road rip
the LP is playing slightly fast in this.. that happens turntables when they get older dunno is it the belt or what..(thats if this is from a record)
I know the woman in the song..her long black hair has held me fast,,and my heart knows all to well i am lost.....
The audio seems to be broken
he was young there it sounds
jnfine dfjshbrflkjernf ya I think this was recorded in 1966
Is this version on any of there live albums
Does anyone know where I can get a CD or MP3 download of Homeland! ?
Many of the tracks from Hometown are included on The Very Best of the Original Dubliners on EMI Records 3Cd Box set.
speed of recording reproduction waaayyy too fast...sounding like chipmonks..slow it down man to give this performance the justice it deserves
Is that Luke without a beard?
No adjectives are worthy.....
He is irelands answer to sinatra...the irish are equal to any country in the world...fact..
Nip and tuck between Luke and Liam, I think. Bob Dylan said Liam Clancy was the best, I eould have said Luke.
6 people have no soul.
@Richp721 Luke was better!!!
