Makes me proud of my Irish ancestry. Breaks my heart they felt the need to immigrate from Ireland but to do so knowing they’d never see their homelands of Kerry again must of been heartbreaking for them as well
I agree. My grandparents came over in the early 1900’s. I have often thought how brave they were to leave home knowing they would never return. They both passed in my late teens or early twenties. So I wasn’t old enough to realize what they gave up. 💚☘️💚☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

Amazing as always... one of my Favorite tunes, Luke was outstanding ! But I just realized how much this song and the Night Visiting song have in common.. Really cool connection! RIP Luke !
Fabulous! Live Version . I love all Lukes songs. Scottish accent not bad. but I think Lukes grandmother was Scottish so no wonder he does this so well.

This is amazing. A few of these songs seem to be twinned: The Night Visiting Song is less raucous, more gentle and romantic than I'm A Rover but Luke's thrown both sets of lyrics together here, probably sensing that it's essentially the same narrative story. What a great band they were. Barney's playing is amazing here while Luke is in total control.

This is the song I go to when I'm upset. The words always calm and reassure me. God rest Luke's soul. A pity he left us so soon.
Even though it's a Scottish song it's simply a real piece of art sung by the greatest voice that ever came from the green isle!
"Raising the roof" via banjo is the bestest idea ever. :)

I love Barney's banjo playing on this as well
Most of the Banjo on this was Lukes 5 string, I can hear very little of Barney's tenor.
Really? Cause I can hear it. Particularly during the chorus, though its hard on this crummy phone speaker :)
Most of the banjo is Lukes 5 string but Barneys banjo is there in the background. Sounds absolutely magical. Love this song
God I need a tenor banjo. I've got a five string, I taught myself how to play it, I'm sure i can teach myself the tenor banjo.
Yes Barney was probably the best banjo player in Ireland as well as Luke if you listen to the shoals of herring you can hear Luke his banjo sort of is like his voice when the high notes he hits the banjo does the same but if he is singing in a deeper key it is the same with the banjo I lovely instrument and I am glad I have take it off myself

There's ne'er a nicht I'm gane to ramble, there's ne'er a nicht I'm gane to roam
There's ne'er a nicht I'm gane to ramble, intae the erms of me ain true love
I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company

I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company
He stepped up tae her bedroom winday, kneeling gently upon a staine
He whispers through her bedroom winday, my darling dear do you lie alaine
I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company
She raised her head from her down soft pillow, wi' her erms around her breasts
Says: ”Why is that that my bedroom winday is 'sterbing me at my long nicht's rest?”
I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company
Says I: ”My love it's I thy true lover, open the door and let me in
For I have come on a long nights journey more than near drenched to my skin”
I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company
She opened the door wi' the greatest pleasure, she opened the door and she let him in
They both shook hands and embraced each other, until the morning they lay as one
I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company
The cocks were crawin', the birds were whistlin',The burns they ran free abune the brae:

I'm a rover, seldom sober, I'm a rover of high degree
It's when I'm drinkin' I'm always thinkin' how to gain my love's company
Says I: My love I must go and leave you, to climb the hills they are far above
But I will climb wi' the greatest pleasure, since I've been in the arms of my love
