HKFO Season 2013: "Ode to Change" is a trilogic project designed to take audiences of Hong Kong through a transformational journey, uniting lay listeners, aficionados and veteran music lovers from the hustling and bustling streets of Hong Kong into the solemn concert halls.
For decades, Hong Kong has been labeled as a cultural desert, despite the many musical monuments the city has established throughout the years. On 28 July 2013, Part One of HKFO's "Trilogy of Change" is put into motion. Planting the seeds of change deep into the streets of Hong Kong, HKFO premieres the city's first large-scale choral-orchestral "flash mob", bringing to the audience excerpts of Beethoven's Symphony No.9 at the heart of one of Hong Kong's densest malls, the Shatin New Town Plaza. A cry for universal brotherhood, HKFO enlists listeners far and wide in our campaign of revolution, innovation and change, to tend the once-desert into green pastures.
Part Two and Part Three of HKFO's journey continue on 19 August 2013 at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall performing with the renowned popular artist George Lam, and on 27 August 2013 at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall performing the entire Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

I wonder whether Beethoven ever imagine his music being played all over the world, across culture and boundaries. Ode to Joy if not the most recognizable tune in the world, it must be one of the most loved music piece by people around the world.
Sharon Yeap ya same
Probably his 5th symphony is more recognisable but id say its definitely one of the most loveable pieces
Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt*;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder*
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt!
and they actually sang in german.. NIOCE
He wrote it from Schiller's great poem. It is about international brotherhood and friendship. So yes he imagined it.
He Imagine. yes !!!
They also sang the original German text. Being from Germany and being German native speaker, I can only say their German was flawless. A brilliant performance.
It is actually Cantonese text set by Hong Kong lyricist James Wong.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Wong_(lyricist)
Not even fucking close to Cantonese. it's German.
you mean beyond brilliant
+MeMyself AndI They start singing the first stanza in German at 5:50.
I am German. The son is about universal brotherhood/sisterhood, about all humans becoming brothers/sisters. My dear friends in HK you did wonderfull!
But we are all humans at last. United by music
Watching and listening to this wonderful performance, I trust Hong Kongers, believe in Hong Kongers, become confident that their imperishable sprit to take final victory. Freedom will prevail Hong Kong!
There is no song that touches the soul as deep as this one. This song is the personification of hope for humanity.
M
Yes❤ I get relaxing yet enervating energy from it.
Alle Menschen werden Brüder...The hymn from genius Ludwig van Beethoven with the lyrics from Friedrich Schiller. I enjoyed to see this great flash mob in Hong Kong. Warm greetings from Germany. 🙂
How can people dislike something so much beautiful?!
We aren't too sure ourselves, Sister SINister, but if you are interested in beautiful things, we would also recommend you checking out our latest work, "The Young Person's Guide to HKFO" - ruclips.net/video/AsQulf0cVDY/видео.html
Just some teens who are into rap music.
Everyone have different taste but damn, those people like children fighting when come to better music even music meaning actually picture worldwide art that can't be described by words
Such a beautiful performance! Why do musical flash mobs always bring out my tears? I hope these musicians are doing well especially if they are still in HK.
Three years later, & this beautiful...life-affirming performance still moves me to tears & so touches my heart deeply...M A G N I F I C E N T...The pure happiness...enthusiasm & JOY of the audience is just so dear...
Music is truly the universal language!
Extremely beautiful, touching ... I listened while crying with joy.... what a magnificent moment!
When Europe is devastated by war, this symphony will be the memory of what we were.
Wonderful! The people of Hongkong should be proud of their youth musicians and Choir.
Ty
My husbans still talks about his visit to Hong Kong in 91. Just before desert shield / desert storm . Sad its not the same anymore.
The greatest music ever written. Thanx Ludwig.;
at last I cry 😭 , once Hong Kong was such a peaceful and joyful place 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
+ 1
Can they still do this in Hong Kong now?
_"Music, when played by those with love in their hearts, can be nothing but perfection."_

Wow" Hongkong,.. Godblessed there,... Godblessed everybody,.... more blessings,....
I grew up in the then British HongKong from 1957 until 1969 . I am from an Cantonese European American family . Greetings to the people of HongKong . Beautiful HongKong .
The one thing all human beings everywhere share is our love of music. Why cant we love each other with the same passion. :)
It just goes to show that the beauty of music is truly universal in our world. ❤
I think what warms my heart the most is seeing the look of wonder and excitement in the children's eyes. Gives a sense of hope.
i hear this every day, never miss told my children to play it at my funeral
dont do that unless u wanna give the impression that ur children are glad u r dead
What happened to this joyful and peaceful HK? Can someone bring back music, joy and peace to our loving HK?
Kick the terrorists from CIA out of Hk and bring back peace
no more, we all know HK is now one country one system, all civilized country are stopping special adminstration treatment. HK will only be good if China willing to repect, not control.
It's so goddamn sad what the CCP is doing to HK and wants to obviously do to all is neighbours. Here's hoping Winnie the Pooh Bear and all his friends start dropping off one by one until the party respects it's borders and stays in China. I don't love the US or the EU but they're right, fuck the CCP and its imperialism.
@@acchaladka I'm not even from Hong Kong but europeans and americans need to GTFO of there. It's between Hong Kong and China so leave it to Chinese and Hong Kong people period.
@@huirant287 Wow, someone who's actually rational found on the Internet. Have yourself a very nice day sir!
Ode to Joy always brings me to tears, and 18 seconds in I'm already crying.
Made EVERY single hair on the back of my neck stand on end. Amazingly talented musicians, and absolutely flawless performance.
Absolutely stunning performance from you all you are credit for the hours of practicing to reach this level of excellence well done. But do wish the spectator's would put their bloody phones down and enjoy the performance and excellence of their live rendition in front of them.
Would be nice that Hong Kong gets back to more peaceful lifestyle.
I mean if I were out shopping anf this happened I would probably video it too, and I am a musician. It's just happening across this is like a once in a lifetime thing. So beautiful to hear music erupting totally organically.
From a freer time for HKers ... who remain in our thoughts and prayers.
i really appreciate these musician and the singers.... my high respect for them all...
Thank you...
What a masterful performance. Beethoven would be proud!!!
Much love from Germany...
the noise of humanity is silenced when great music is played - for it is within us all.
That's so beautiful. Viele vergessen die Idee, die hinter Europa steht. Ein Völkerbund, Gleichheit und Frieden. Das sollte für dir gesamte Welt gelten. In diesen Tagen sollte man mehr denn je aufklären.
just amazing ...wish there was such peace and joy in Hong Kong today!!
On the spot it was so well received that the young conductor answered by playing an encore. I am feeling proud for them. Indeed, "Deine Zauber binden wieder!"
I cried, not ashamed to say it. Beautiful.
Beautiful. Who would have thought that the acoustics would be so good in a shopping mall.
Hi was absolutely blown away by this! They even sing the original German text and their pronunciation was fire (I would know, I’m German)
This by far the best flash mob I have heard of the Ode to Joy!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you Gerald! Don't forget to check out our latest work: "The Young Person's Guide to HKFO"! See: ruclips.net/video/AsQulf0cVDY/видео.html. Please see our other great outdoor classic performance for your enjoyment!
Ode to Joy is simply beautiful...so patriotic in tone and serves to unite us all!
Probably the most fitting music for a clash of titans as well like in the anime series Neon Genesis: Evangelion.
***** Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that I live in North Korea and we're not allowed to have our own opinions. Gosh, real sorry...
Darren Dewyer
Darren - don't waste your time on this dilweed. Notice he refers you to an encyclopedia just after he tells you to "lean" some things. Amazing this pseudo intellectual found a way to turn this beautiful masterpiece that has transcended the ages into an attack tool. Not worth your time.

Well, they do write English better than anyone else. Their 15 minutes of glory. You are right, it is about liberty, freedom and peace. And a musical masterpiece!
The closest voice to god that I know!!
Absolutely magnificent piece! Full compliments to the orchestra, the choir who sang a very difficult piece in German, into the conductor who managed to change the sound of this piece from every other one on RUclips. This choir and this orchestra are going places. Congratulations!
I was expecting them to build the orchestra. I was not ready for the voices. Beautifully done.
So heart-warming to see these kids performing a classic so beautifully.
Thank you Hong Kong, thank you musicians and singers, thank you Luwig van Beethoven.
This is the best flash mob from Beethoven I've ever heard. I wish I was there watching it live. Well done from the Philippines
Este tampoco está mal, amigo.

Brilliant and wonderful, one century ahead of their peer in the mainland in terms of civilization, gave hope that one day they'd perform in TianAnMen Square...
IT'S IMPOSSABLE, G-D HAD TO HELP HIM. SO SO BEAUTIFUL, WHY AM I CRYING.
Thank you all. It was like a shower-burst of beauty.
Beautiful❤ love it... 🇮🇳India.
I'm proud of Hong Kong people, this was a great job, my friends, Greatings from Hungary, :)
Can you remember you comment on this video 8 years ago 😊

Music to me is one of the highest ability Human can acquire.
I Watched This Twice As A Child, And Today It Still Amazes Me!
Great arrangement ♥️👏👏. Fantastic musicians. Standing ovation here. Harder to play like this. 🌹🌹🌸🌸
i love it when the choirs sing a song...good job~
All beautiful music deserves to reach countless ears that may never otherwise enjoy it. I love how flash mobs are now creating whole new audiences, some of whom might otherwise never hear classical and even believe pop and rock are as good as it gets. These activities plus the making of beautiful sounding orchestra instruments out of trash in poor nations for children who would never otherwise get a chance to play one gives me hope for humanity.
Beautifully put, I could not agree more. Sharing music is such a wonderful gift. Thank you Hong Kong Festival Orchestra. ps wish I was there!
I've seen this a couple of times but it is still strange to see foreign people speaking clear german without any accent even though I know that it is just because they train how to pronounce the words properly.
Anyways, amazing performance!
one solitary young man with a bass viola in the middle of Hong Kong playing, then the rest becomes EPIC...!! ***** only in Hong Kong. very much thanks, I enjoyed this video IMMENSELY!
I must again send my applause to the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra... I have watched this several times... each time lifting spirits, putting a broad smile on my face, as well as being in awe of your work and talent...
Music recognizes no borders, no nationalities, no limits. Time has no meaning to music. This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever created, by a man who never once set foot in Hong Kong. And yet it's played right here. Timeless Music like the Ode To Joy is as close to touching God as humans can get.
Such beautiful Music must be inspired by something greater than ourselves, no? Otherwise, why are there people like Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky? People who were endowed with a creativity that common men do not possess? Music such as this must come from some external place. Call this external place "God". Music is the firmest proof we have that God exists.
John Landon have you ever read Tolkien's Silmarillion? If you have you would know that Eru (God) just raise his hand and music, harmoni is heard. Also all Eru's "angels" (the Ainur) had they're very own part in the Music. Melkor (the Devil) changes his part of the music to his own good, not Eru's. So what i want to say is: Yes, you are right. I believe music comes from God, or just inspired by him. And another "proof" is that Doumbledore, (even if he is a fictive person) says something like "There is no greater magic than music". And in my opinion, none can change, i mean everything comes from God, some people may just don't want to believe in Him because he allows evil to happen, such as the Holocaust. But we don't have the mind to understand that. To everyone who doesn't know God I'll just say, look God up in the Bible and see for yourself!
Time has no meaning in music? Surely you don't seriously believe that rubbish.
marteGT he also believes in god so...he really does believe a lot of rubbish
marteGT
I believe he means that music like this is timeless. 218 years have passed since this piece was written, and you can see how much literal joy it brings to people, and likely it will still be doing so another 2 centuries from now.
michael stebbings
THANK YOU. That is what I meant. I said time had no meaning TO music. I didn't bother to respond to MarteGT, because he's an idiot.
And Julian Chindanai shut the hell up.
every time i rewatch this i get chills. beautiful.
Really amazing, yes its an ODE TO JOY to be able to watch these few talented young musicians bring such joy to so many who were there that day and also to the many who have seen this video all over the world on the internet since the event !!
How wonderful to be part of something like this
This is the BEST flash mob EVER!!! *BRAVO!!!*
loved it ,never get tired of listing to ODE TO JOY, wonderful performence, the more voice's the better.
Wonderful to see Orchestra in Hong Kong no longer just being played in Concert Halls or official events but casual place like a shopping centre, so to allow people that had never heard classical music a chance to listen, enjoy and be amazed :-D Well done!!
Music is God's gift to mankind, a universal language that knows no boundaries. I Thank god for glorious music like this Ode to Joy, I feel it makes for a perfect Global Anthem too.
This may very well be the best performance of ode to joy that you can find on youtube.
Brilliant job.
The Biggest Ensemble so far. . .
This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with the world Ladies and Gentleman!
Beautiful performance. The orchestra and singers were a pleasure to listen to!!!
That was wonderful! Tears came to my eyes when the choir started singing!
You're not alone buddy 🥺🤍
Wow,. So excellent,... the brilliant performance,... wow" Godblessed all,.... Godblessed the whole cast of talented,... Wow,.... more blessings,....
This makes me so proud and happy! Hi from Germany :))
on one side Hittler and in the other this.... But so is life! I will take the positive site! :)
Stertje1979 Hitler was Austrian, you know. And thanks for pointlessly bringing that topic up again.
Stertje1979
That's the reason why we never gonna be not the nazis
People who attack Germans need to reveal their own nationality. Otherwise they are just cowards. Maybe you don't reveal your nationality because your country cannot afford to point the finger at Germany? I am not German but many other countries like Britain also committed mass murder against millions of people. So think first before you throw a stone at Germany.
Wish there are more this kind of activities in Hong Kong, Good experience for the kids :)
This gives me faith in humanity. So many people cooperating to recreate such a beautiful piece of music, written centuries ago on the other side of the world.
....amazing how a single musician can get the attention of 500 people...immediately....
