Check out Squeeze's "Tempted" featuring the great Paul Carrack. Many will remember him from his time with the band Ace ("How Long" - great bassline) and with Mike and the Mechanics ("The Living Years" and "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)"). His biggest solo hit was "Don't Shed a Tear". The man has a golden voice.

I agree, Squeeze's style of music wasn't really my thing (or so I thought) but their lyrics won me over & I was a convert. I still play them today, probably more than some of the other music I was listening to back then. When Crwoded House came along I was won over straight away. I was lucky enough to see them live in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England in a fairly small venue & the banter between the band and the audience won me over all over again.

I am a HUGE Squeeze fan. They are extremely underrated, especially for their songwriting. I've seen them perform countless times, including one incredibly memorable event. They were playing at this outdoor venue in Qunicy MA and it was rained out, the stage was not protected in any way and it was unsafe for them to perform. Not only did they come back and perform the next night but Glen Tilbrook and Chris Difford came out and set in chairs on the end of one of the bars and played almost a 2 hour acoustical set for the perhaps 50 or so of us diehard fans that had lingered in the pouring rain. It was freakin amazing.

I feel you on the Crowded House thing, actually. It kinda feels like "Something So Strong", and looking back, it seems likely to have inspired it. Honestly, I imagine most fans of Crowded House/Split Enz are already fans of Squeeze and it seems entirely likely the artists were fans of each others' work. They were mining similar territory for a few years there, in the late 70s and early 80s - with angular, spacey New Wave, bouncy Power Pop, and reedy Blue-Eyed Soul all tossed into the gumbo, and they both leaned into the soulful, jangling thing as the years went by

If you're familiar with his music, you can hear Elvis Costello's distinctive voice in the background vocals. Another vote for "Tempted", "Hourglass" or "Pulling Mussels from a Shell" next. Thanks for listening and sharing and keeping great music alive!
    Peace from SF

I love Squeeze. Their last hit was a song called "Hourglass", in the late 80s. I hope you can react to that one. Meanwhile, Squeeze has a great catalog. They were more popular in the UK than in the US in their late 70s-early 80s heyday, but I heard them on the college station in my town. "Tempted", however, was a huge hit. The keyboardist is a fellow named Jools Holland, and he's had a popular live music TV show on BBC Two for almost 30 years now.

Chris Difford is a musical poet,he has the ability to write songs from the heart in language everyone can relate to,he writes as if he were talking to you.He & Glen Tilbrook were called the new Lennon & McCartney for their songwriting skills
Such a great band,I’ve seen them twice & would do so again in a heartbeat.
Their songbook is wonderful, delve deeper & you will find many, many gems 👌😊

When Squeeze first went to the US, they had to be known/billed as "UK Squeeze" because there was already an American band with the same name. The two main songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford were once dubbed "The Lennon and McCartney of The 80's". Some of their song lyrics might have difficulty in being understood on the other side of The Pond. Difford & Tilbrook use phrases and colloquialisms that are definitely "London and The South East". Even some English - speaking listeners would need a "translator" for some of their lyrics.Check out Glenn and Chris - (along with their impromptu keyboard player from the band) playing "Goodbye Girl" live and unplugged at their first gig venue in Greenwich, S.E London. I vaguely remember that they had to unveil a commemorative "Blue Plaque" on the building as they are now local celebrities. When Squeeze are resting between tours, Glenn Tilbrook does solo tours and plays with his pub band "The Fluffers" who include his son Leo on bass.
