In Badfinger's case, they were just young dudes, thrilled to be working with Beatles, being billed as "the next Beatles," getting to tour nicely, etc. Meanwhile, their business manager had them on stipends, all living in the same house for a long time, and criminally mismanaging their money in the guise of "protecting them" from their own "financial naivete." In the end, practically all the money was gone. It's one of the most tragic tales in rock music.

It led to band strife and the eventual suicide of the creative founder and lead singer Peter Ham in 1975 as he struggled with financial difficulties . Paul wrote "Come and Get It" for them as they were the first band on the Beatles' Apple label. They wanted to take it and do their own thing with it and he told them, no, do it just like I wrote it and you'll have a hit. If you hear the demo from Paul you'll see they did it exactly like he wrote it and it sure enough was a hit.

Badfinger was brought into the Beatles inner-circle by Mal Evans, their Roadie and Personal Assistant, in 1968. They were known as the Iveys then but they changed their name to "Badfinger" based on a working title of one of the Beatles demos for "With a Little Help From My Friends". Badfinger was the first band signed by The Beatles to their new record label, Apple Records. Paul McCartney gave them one of his songs to help them get a hit, a song called "Come and Get It", which was a hit for them in 1970. Badfinger is very influenced by the Beatles and were on the Apple label until 1973. George Harrison produced Day After Day, so there is a strong Beatles connection with this band. Harrison did play on this track. And members of Badfinger had played on Harrison's album, All Things Must Pass. The Concert for Bangladesh was incredible. Musically, that concert was almost otherworldly in just how good it was and the blend of all the musical talent who played on it.. When Claudia Lennear was interviewed about that show she said, "That show was just something that was cosmic. If you were there to experience it, it will be something you'll take to the grave." It's tragic what happened to Badfinger.

They were good friends of the Beatles. Beatles took them under their wings as it were. The slide guitar was helped out by George Harrison ( if I recall correctly).
Mike Gibbins - the drummer - lived in Oviedo, Florida when he died. His wife was a realtor. My wife got to meet him and have drinks with him at Froggers (local bar). She went to the funeral and the last surviving member - Joey Molland - spoke. The last song they played was "Without You". She said there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

I attended Upper Iowa College in 1971. Upper Iowa is a small private college located in NE Iowa. Badfinger played at an indoor concert there. The Band even had their picture in our yearbook. Another band member committed. suicide. Both hung themselves because they were so distraught over their fortunes being stolen. The band was broke. Jamal there’s a live version I believe on the Midnight Special.

There are a couple of Badfinger documentaries out there that explain a lot of what these poor guys went through. One of the documentaries was done by the BBC... The song "Without You" that was made famous by Harry Nilsson and later recorded by Mariah Carey was actually a Badfinger song. Check it out. "Baby Blue", "Come And Get It", and "No Matter What" are also definitely worth checking out. Def Leppard did a cover of "No Matter What". Badfinger appeared on Kenny Rogers' TV Show in the early 70s to perform "Baby Blue"; a video shows a very young KR introduce the band. Very sad fate suffered by this band, but all of these years later, their music endures.

I'll never forget summertime carnivals in my NJ hometown, they would have great rock & roll piped thru loudspeakers all over the fairgrounds, and this was one of the songs in regular play way back when. This song was written by Pete Ham to a girl (Beverly Ellis). They were together a long time, but split up and Pete was having a hard time getting over her. He found out through some mutual friends that she was still trying to get over him, too. Beverly knew that the band was starting to break big, and at the time, the band came first. They went separate ways, she eventually married someone else, he did his best, until he met Dixie (the girl he mentions twice in Baby Blue). He also wrote No Matter What as a love song to her, originally as an acoustic song. Without You was another song he wrote the night he realized the end for them was nearing. She wound up going to a party alone while he worked on song ideas with their bass player. "It`s ok, I`ll go alone...see? I`m smiling" He answered "Your lips are smiling, but your eyes aren`t". When she got home that night he brought her into the studio to hear the beginnings of Without You, just the first verse and the second where he sings"I can`t forget tomorrow when I think of all my sorrow, I had you there, then I let you go". Read the book, "Without You, the Tragic story of Badfinger" by Dan Montovina. So Sad...it`ll make the piss trickle down your leg..

Herbert Norkus it was a last ditch effort by them after tragedy & poor management. Pete Ham hung himself in 1975 when he couldn’t take the financial pressures anymore after their manager stole their money. The remaining members tried to put something together in the late 70’s & early 80’s but had no real backing or management. The band was soon done. Then in 1983 Tom Evans hung himself 8 years after his best friend Pete had done the same thing 😞 This was a tragic ending for a band that could have been very successful 😢

Badfinger brings back so many wonderful memories of my youth. Tom Evans and Pete Ham also wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Without You. Made famous by Nilsson… One of the great song writing teams ever and tragically cut short.
Always loved this band. They sounded similar to the Beatles. “No Matter What You Do” is another great song of theirs. You can hear that signature Harrison guitar.
Everyone is suggesting Baby Blue, Come and Get it & No Matter What for good reasons, but less known songs like Sometimes, Take It All, Perfection & It’s Over are worthy. They also wrote and recorded Without You, which a lot of artists, including Mariah Carey covered.

In the 70's I was a huge Motown fan. Badfinger was promoted by and helped by the Beatles in various aspects. The song Come and Get It was the theme song for a movie entitled "The Magic Christian" with Ringo Starr and Peter Sellers. McCarney wrote the song, and Badfiner sang it. If they hadn't been destroyed by their management, there's no telling how much more they would have achieved.

Badfinger...great band. Pete Ham was an epic singer/songwriter/musician. George Harrison was so impressed with Pete's guitar skills that he asked him to play at the Bangladesh Concert. The most heartbreaking story in music. There's a video on youtube about what happened to Pete and Tommy. Pete would have written so many brilliant songs. He wrote "Without You" and it was recorded by a lot of different artists. RIP Pete and Tommy.

Badfinger was brought into the Beatles inner-circle by Mal Evans, their Roadie and Personal Assistant, in 1968. They were known as the Iveys then but they changed their name to "Badfinger" based on a working title of one of the Beatles demos for "With a Little Help From My Friends". Badfinger was the first band signed by The Beatles to their new record label, Apple Records. Paul McCartney gave them one of his songs to help them get a hit, a song called "Come and Get It", which was a hit for them in 1970. Badfinger is very influenced by the Beatles and were on the Apple label until 1973. George Harrison produced Day After Day, so there is a strong Beatles connection with this band. Check out their song "No Matter What"! That is a great Badfinger song!

Harrison did play on this track. And members of Badfinger had played on Harrison's album, All Things Must Pass. The Concert for Bangladesh was incredible. Musically, that concert was almost otherworldly in just how good it was and the blend of all the musical talent who played on it.. When Claudia Lennear was interviewed about that show she said, "That show was just something that was cosmic. If you were there to experience it, it will be something you'll take to the grave." It's tragic what happened to Badfinger.

Mike Gibbins - the drummer - lived in Oviedo, Florida when he died. His wife was a realtor. My wife got to meet him and have drinks with him at Froggers (local bar). She went to the funeral and the last surviving member - Joey Molland - spoke. The last song they played was "Without You". She said there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
We all have songs that we remember as ones that made us fall in love with music, this is one for me. I recall having the little radio I would hide under my pillow and listen to it after my parents thought I was asleep, just hoping this song would come on.
I did that, all through the mid 70s-early 80s. I wrote down all songs I heard, every 'best of' list, turned the knob from station to station maniacally...

I attended Upper Iowa College in 1971. Upper Iowa is a small private college located in NE Iowa. Badfinger played at an indoor concert there. The Band even had their picture in our yearbook. We were so backward then, that we wore suits to the concert. Jamel, you brought me back to my first concert, thank you.

Badfinger was supposed to be the "next Beatles". They were stolen from to the point that Pete Ham committed suicide. One of my favorite bands, check out "baby blue", and "No matter what".
Another band member committed. suicide. Both hung themselves because they were so distraught over their fortunes being stolen. The band was broke. Jamal there’s a live version I believe on the Midnight Special.

Harrison started producing it, then he left to go do the concert for Bangladesh so Todd Rundgren finished production.
There are a couple of Badfinger documentaries out there that explain a lot of what these poor guys went through. One of the documentaries was done by the BBC...

"Baby Blue", "Come And Get It", and "No Matter What" are also definitely worth checking out. Def Leppard did a cover of "No Matter What". Badfinger appeared on Kenny Rogers' TV Show in the early 70s to perform "Baby Blue"; a video shows a very young KR introduce the band.
Very sad fate suffered by this band, but all of these years later, their music endures.

I'll never forget summertime carnivals in my NJ hometown, they would have great rock & roll piped thru loudspeakers all over the fairgrounds, and this was one of the songs in regular play way back when. This song was written by Pete Ham to a girl (Beverly Ellis). They were together a long time, but split up and Pete was having a hard time getting over her. He found out through some mutual friends that she was still trying to get over him, too. Beverly knew that the band was starting to break big, and at the time, the band came first. They went separate ways, she eventually married someone else, he did his best, until he met Dixie (the girl he mentions twice in Baby Blue). He also wrote No Matter What as a love song to her, originally as an acoustic song. Without You was another song he wrote the night he realized the end for them was nearing. She wound up going to a party alone while he worked on song ideas with their bass player. "It`s ok, I`ll go alone...see? I`m smiling" He answered "Your lips are smiling, but your eyes aren`t". When she got home that night he brought her into the studio to hear the beginnings of Without You, just the first verse and the second where he sings"I can`t forget tomorrow when I think of all my sorrow, I had you there, then I let you go". Read the book, "Without You, the Tragic story of Badfinger" by Dan Montovina. So Sad...it`ll make the piss trickle down your leg..

Herbert Norkus it was a last ditch effort by them after tragedy & poor management. Pete Ham hung himself in 1975 when he couldn’t take the financial pressures anymore after their manager stole their money. The remaining members tried to put something together in the late 70’s & early 80’s but had no real backing or management. The band was soon done. Then in 1983 Tom Evans hung himself 8 years after his best friend Pete had done the same thing 😞 This was a tragic ending for a band that could have been very successful 😢

Yes! The Grass Roots would be a great one for him to cover. An assembled group, though not like tho Monkees. The Grass Roots were actually a musical group that were doing ok locally. They were turned into the Grass Roots and became successful.
These guys were mentored by Paul and they were the first band to be signed to Apple Records in 1970. So good!

Their last album, Wish You Were Here, being pulled from the shelves early in it's release finally broke Pete. They had left Apple Records a couple of years earlier in the wake of The Beatles' breakup.
By the way, Wish You Were Here is a great album.
Named after Ivey Place, which is the road the main railway station in Swansea is on.

Always loved this band. They sounded similar to the Beatles. “No Matter What You Do” is another great song of theirs. You can hear that signature Harrison guitar.
Everyone is suggesting Baby Blue, Come and Get it & No Matter What for good reasons, but less known songs like Sometimes, Take It All, Perfection & It’s Over are worthy. They also wrote and recorded Without You, which a lot of artists, including Mariah Carey covered.

In the 70's I was a huge Motown fan. My buddies gave me crap because I listened to Earth Wind and Fire, Commodores, the Spinners, Gladys, Aretha along with Boston, Eagles, Styx etc. I played violin and trombone and I knew great music when I heard it! Badfinger was promoted by and helped by the Beatles in various aspects. The song Come and Get It was the theme song for a movie entitled "The Magic Christian" with Ringo Starr and Peter Sellers. McCarney wrote the song, and Badfiner sang it. If they hadn't been destroyed by their management, there's no telling how much more they would have achieved.

Badfinger...great band. Pete Ham was an epic singer/songwriter/musician. George Harrison was so impressed with Pete's guitar skills that he asked him to play at the Bangladesh Concert. The most heartbreaking story in music. There's a video on youtube about what happened to Pete and
Tommy. Pete would have written so many brilliant songs. He wrote "Without You" and it was recorded by a lot of different artists. RIP Pete and Tommy.
