You listened to a subpar version of the song. You need to listen to a version which is a couple minutes longer. You will love it 10 times more. It’s on their “Singles-45’s and Under” album.

Lead singer of this band (not on this song, but on Tempted) is Mike of Mike and the Mechanics Living Years). I heard the coffee represented a mocha colored lover but not sure about that…

Paul Carrack only played with Squeeze for one album. He was not in Squeeze at the time Black Coffee was made. Look up Paul Carrack, one of the greatest voices ever!
