As a Ukrainian who fled to Germany at the beginning of Russian invasion in 2022, I understand what Michael is going through. I had the same agonizing feeling that being online and seeing the horror of Bucha and Mariupol was at the same time awful for my health (I was already diagnosed with depression and adaptation disorder because of the move), and at the same time not watching it was equal to being a traitor, losing the connection with my friends and loved ones back at home. The greatest advice I can give as a elementary teacher is, screen time should be earned by reading time. Read a half hour, you get half an hour of screen time. Read an hour, an hour of screen time. Can also count being read to time.
Every time we 'reward' a child for reading (or practicing their sums), we reinforce the idea that reading/learning is a chore. A better option might be to talk to kids about all the wonderful creative opportunities that reading affords them. Then, 'challenge' students to help classmates who may be struggling to achieve reading parity. Rewarding students for good teamwork never goes out of style. 😉

Yes, watch with your kids. My friends limited screen time and used it as a babysitter. I watched with my kid, it inspired so many conversations and imaginative play. When it comes to online arguments, I think it was on Adam Conover's show, they talked about how you have 3 chances to change a mind. After the 3rd statement made in a conversation though, the chances of you changing a mind goes down so much, there is no point in continuing. People just dig in more and more after that and you end up just annoying everyone else that is reading or hearing what is going on.
I don't know about cause vs effect, but definitely by the third comment reply, the chances of a spiral into a huge 10+ comment chain argument goes up exponentially, or at least until one commenter is sick of it, or until a moderator locks it down. I'd actually say by the 2nd reply (so comment, counter-argument, reply), you can basically tell if the other side just wants a fight or is actually open to listening to your arguments, and minds are usually only changed if both sides are willing to listen.

Right, I find commenting on some electronic music videos where the poster has only a couple thousand subscribers as 'social' as I get. Usually, praising their music taste/mixing or asking about what certain tracks are. As they have fewer subscribers, they usually reply. But it's not really 'social' media. It's just one late night." Uh, no. You're not here the next day when he just melts down all day long until we're back on track.
Don't forget Jerry Mander's book Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television, published 7 years before Amusing Ourselves to Death. Another great show, thanks!
The advent of print press is a more apt comparison to social media than television. Talk about if it’s in a book it’s real is the ancient equivalent to if it’s on the internet it’s real. Also it fractured the information monopoly that churches and monarchy had, which the modern equivalent is things like the modern mainstream press and governments.
This is why people should not ask political podcast hosts for child development advice. Jon did not do too bad, but the fact is there is a lot of good research showing the harms of screentime on young children. Teachers have been alarmed about the huge increase in behavior problems, aggression, poor social skills, poor executive skills, even before the pandemic. The obvious impact of early screen exposure on our brain development should be treated like the national public health emergency that it is. Take it from this Behavioral Pediatrician for the past 20+ years.
Social media is a tool - you get to decide how you use it or if you use it at all. Gen X here & I use social media in a very limited, keep up with family & friends kind of way. That works for me. 😊
The thing about Facebook is that’s where my people who for the most part I know IRL hang out and where I can actually connect. It’s where I feel I make the most impact when I post political stuff. Can’t seem to break through to actual connection on Twitter, Threads,IG, all of which I find annoying and full of barriers to actual connection. And in terms of real-time local events, FB is the only useful platform. At the same time, I’m aware that I use Podcasts as a substitute for actual smart convos IRL. I want to change that in 2024.
According to a 2020 article, members of Congress own up to $60.4 million in fossil fuel stocks. This includes nearly 30 members of congressional committees that oversee oil and gas companies.
It's difficult to be intentionally addicted to something. Funnily enough, being intentional with my addiction has at least shifted things around for me instead of making it a habit.
According to a 2019 report, 10 senators own between $403,023 and $1,201,000 in individual stocks of Big Oil companies. This includes senators on critical committees involved in climate regulations.
One thing I see about social media is people use it as a bullhorn, "I have an opinion and I'm not afraid to say it". I can remember hearing that opinions are like rectums, everyone has one... and they usually stink. When I read or see something that upsets me or even if I agree I try to search and ask myself questions - is this true, is there a bias that is not necessarily true or false. In order words, I think about it. Sometimes there was nothing to get upset about and because I took my time I didn't join the bullhorn of opinion.
My son watched for a half hour a day until 7 years old. After 7, he still watched a half hour, but started drawing while watching. By 12 or 13 he watched an hour but always drawing splendiferous drawings in huge sketch books. We did a lot of activities; went a lot of places - lots of sports. Don’t want Jon to feel bad but a half-hour is possible, it just takes a lot of energy & drive by parents. Also: Why isn’t Mr. Rogers being rerun? Legal issues? It’s a great loss for kids.
As either the youngest of millennials or the oldest of Z, I just want to throw it out there that I have noticed how well Crooked does with including perspective across most generations. I think there will always be a consumer majority within the Millennial generation simply because the four guys are representative of that generation. Simultaneously-- I don't think that is cause for concern or necessary to focus on, as the content is important and therefore translates to all audiences interested and willing to listen.
Just got on Threads to take a look, after they opened it up in Europe, and so far it feels surprisingly wholesome, even the algorithmic feed. Twitter always felt like a wasteland, even years ago, there was nothign to do there if you didn't participate in angry shout-outs.
Jon & Max nailed crux of this issue that it’s a connection illusion like 📺social media is always 1 sided & I feel the loss of activism 4 awareness is far more insidious. Kids know how to express their opinions yet not how to convince & communicate like an MLK. Idk if an MLK exists w/o living w/ that lull in activity, the moment of boredom & silence is what allows to look inwards & reflect. We respond to posts bt it’s not at all like any discussions IRL bcuz it’s too fragmented to be back & forth. I bet until we mandate actual limits on socials, like students cannot access an app until few hrs in the evenings like 6-10pm & varying brackets depending on their ages.
As long as people go to twitter because that's "where things happen", it'll remain the place where things happen. I deactivated my account in august and whether I'm on bluesky or threads, a lot of it is people who can't commit to cut off twitter, flocking around a twitter screenshot and droning on and on about how bad things are over there - like being on a date where the other person won't stop talking about their ex. The state of the go-to place of microblogging is just a chicken and egg situation. People still somehow accept any and all insane policy changes Musk makes to be able to clutch to their following and the addiction of the established place. Provided that they have a breaking point, it'll be a very slow trickle of people from twitter to whichever platform has the biggest reach when they've FINALLY had enough, but I think the format is fundamentally strong enough that it's going to happen.
24:27 The things that happen, from what I have been reading, on Mastadon mainly seem to be things that people don't want to be easily publicized. Like, counter-protesting organizations and target acquisition. But, yeah, like the adult-kid who sold Military secrets on Discord, it's a similar situation on Mastadon--in terms of lack of that "YOU MISSED IT!" phenomina that Twitter and such once became known for.
Is PayPal considered social media? Its name sort of indicates a social q doesn't it? I've found the app to be way too intrusive and it's violating privacy, for sure. I didnt ask it to pay a bill for me. Maybe the box was pre-selected? Nonetheless, i stopped the payment thru my bank and all future Pay Pal requests will be rejected. This after they double charged my 2 accounts for months on every purchase. Not tolerating it! Thanks for the topic, guys. Congrats on the books. 🎉
Please take Charlie outside in the morning. What if he started his day with a cloud, a flower a tree? Not having kids into this human/AI hellscape is the best move I ever made. Good luck y’all. Of course if you believe social media the ocean collapses in 2050 and we’re all screwed. Love you guys.
I disagree about TikTok, it’s algorithm is not at all like Facebook and Twitter/X, I never see fear-mongering - anger-inducing videos, mine is quite literally sunshine and rainbows because that’s all I want to see there. Unlike FB and X that still seem to prioritise rage-response videos.
I’d love to see you include more disability perspectives (then maybe you wouldn’t joke about medical misinformation). I don’t think anyone on the show understands social media as a lifeline, particularly nowadays for people who are still at high risk from COVID. As someone who is neurodivergent, as much as social media is a place where there’s a lot of misinformation and hatred about us, it’s also a place where people can find support and information. And most important we can find each other. While it’s appropriate to say twitter, Tik tok and facebook are awful places; I would also point out the New York Times has been widely criticised for its anti-trans reporting, as has The Times in the UK. I genuinely refused to read the NYT after it posted a story looking at the ‘love story’ behind a murder/suicide. I don’t trust the BBC since they broadcast a documentary earlier this year about ADHD so full of stigma and misinformation that people should lose their jobs over it. Only this week Prince Harry won a court case against several newspapers. Look at the Coleen Rooney’s documentary about how paparazzi were stalking her and Wayne at 16. He’ll, look at why she was so angry stories were being sold to The Sun. Social media is bad, but don’t pretend legacy media is better.
RE: "Abandoned by the left" A lot of people don't understand the difference (and a lot of other people are cynically pretending not to understand in order to fan the flames) between pointing out that there is no perfect resistance or revolt (look up some of the stuff the ANC did in apartheid South Africa) and supporting or justifying the death of innocents. I'm going to give you a really hard fucking truth: if Oct 7th is an identifiable turning point, then 20/30/50 years from now the innocent deaths on that day are going to be a footnote in the history. And that sounds awful, but the reason those deaths will be minimized in the view of history is because what Israel had done up to that point (and continues to do to this point) is nothing short of monstrous. If Oct 7th is the historical turning point in Palestinian liberation, then fucking HAMAS will be see as David in the David vs Goliath fight (and before that rubs you the wrong way, read up on what David did to Uriah.)
Mastodon’s a very pleasant place to be social mediaingnbut then I’m on the nerdfighteria instance so it might not be the standard experience. Still, my understanding is that you’re far more likely to stumble on somebody interesting posting about interesting things

awareness is activism. aware people make conscious choices
Thanks for such enlightening conversation!
oh wow didn't expect to run into anime chat in the middle of this pod! Always a welcome surprise.
Another solid sender, thank you! I'm really enjoying the Jon/Max match, great combo.
Thankful for your show! So inspirational and mindful. Thank you so much, learning from you all the time! I'm a boomer.
I have never been on FB or Twitter or Snap Chat etc. so glad I never went down those knee jerk rabbit holes
I’m sure this was pre-recorded but congrats to Jon and his wife on their newborn
Have a great time with your new baby! I hope the birth goes/went well with no problems!
The thing about Facebook is that’s where my people who for the most part I know IRL hang out and where I can actually connect.
It’s where I feel I make the most impact when I post political stuff. Can’t seem to break through to actual connection on Twitter, Threads,IG, all of which I find annoying and full
of barriers to actual connection. And in terms of real-time local events, FB is the only useful platform. At the same time, I’m aware that I use Podcasts as a substitute for actual smart convos IRL. I want to change that in 2024.
Everything Naomi Klein said about personal branding is what I hate most about IG, Threads Twitter.
I love listening to you thank you
Hearing you guys talk about Twitter made me glad I haven’t used it in almost a year. Seems like such a waste of time now.
Max is such a funny dude. I love the big laughs he gets out of Jon 😂
The crooked discord has solved all my social media issues
Never been on twitter. Never been on facebook. Super happy...
Thanks!
I like hearing Whoopi's comments because she often says that we should wait for more information.
More people need to be humble and say I don't know.
Was that before or after she was suspended from the view?
@@Ndbrown2 Last week twice.
According to a 2020 article, members of Congress own up to $60.4 million in fossil fuel stocks. This includes nearly 30 members of congressional committees that oversee oil and gas companies.
32:45 I'm glad max said all that!
Great discussion!
Preordered the audible version!! Used the libre site and you can pick an independent bookstore to support.
Since the Chosen came out I didn't go much at all to watch anything.but with all now I watch utube.all I can watch in a day.
Love this show
Twitter was never the main hub of discourse. Reddit always had a superior center for learning what was going on in the world.
Reddit great for the more in depth town square style but Twitter is far better for breaking news especially with the hashtag mechanic
Boomers and gen-x on Facebook - social media has had the most damaging effect on the generations that started using it as adults.
Tech execs: let's not bicker and argue about who killed who.
I believe it was Monty Python who said: then again, Camelot is a silly place.
Congratulations on the new addition to your family Jon, my youngest daughter is due to have her third and last son, Jellybean! I can hardly wait!
Gee another dem waiting for the birth of a baby. Does planned parenthood know about this?
Aren't you glad they were not aborted?
Woah, Favs! A 20-minute walk with no phone! That gave me anxiety. 😅
At least the 'vibes vs data' convo is pertinent to the election season ha
as a Boomer, it amazes me that the thought of taking 20-30 minutes away from our phone is a goal for you. Makes me sad.
Just got on Threads to take a look, after they opened it up in Europe, and so far it feels surprisingly wholesome, even the algorithmic feed. Twitter always felt like a wasteland, even years ago, there was nothign to do there if you didn't participate in angry shout-outs.
Get the book "Reading with Phonics" by Julie Hay and Charles Wingo for Charlie. Have him practice his word sounds.
The Hilarious irony of these two saying BlueSky and Mastodon are irrelevant and then go on talking about threads for 10 minutes. 😂
Twitter just "feels" like it is so much worse, Max? Only feels? Ooookay.

The things that happen, from what I have been reading, on Mastadon mainly seem to be things that people don't want to be easily publicized. Like, counter-protesting organizations and target acquisition. But, yeah, like the adult-kid who sold Military secrets on Discord, it's a similar situation on Mastadon--in terms of lack of that "YOU MISSED IT!" phenomina that Twitter and such once became known for.
Gen z here it’s us
I won't try to recommend the Jon where to start with Miyazaki, but he's going to like it
I would laugh at the books banned in your state joke, but i live in one of those states 😅. But they can't stop the mail. 😊
Im more interested in knowing who plays more video games honestly. Millennial whose not on twitter anymore but uses shorts and reels too much
I'm 37 and video games are still my #1 choice in entertainment. I'm listening/watching this while playing GTA V on PC
MORE CONSERVATIVE CHANNELS POPPING UP EVERY DAY.
I’m 67, so check that boomer box hard! 😂😂😂😂😂
calendar brain is so real lol
RE: "Abandoned by the left"
A lot of people don't understand the difference (and a lot of other people are cynically pretending not to understand in order to fan the flames) between pointing out that there is no perfect resistance or revolt (look up some of the stuff the ANC did in apartheid South Africa) and supporting or justifying the death of innocents.
"Welcome to Offline. Today we will be talking about everything online." I love y'all, but change the name, Fav.
😂 i thought the same thing🤣🤣🤣
google search is dead. It's all sponsored links. No actual 'search' occurs...
Where are all the KONY 2012 shirts??
I can only wear contacts glasses dont work with my eyes so can't read before bed. Im very anoyed
Love Max, he da man but can we hire a laughing coach for him? It is very "huh .. huh .. huh".
I think "progressive" is on its way to being a dirty word.
It happens. Liberal was the old word
Once trump took over in 2016, social media began dying with the rise of QA and now we have nazi X and bs everywhere. I'm off all social media except YT and I'm considering leaving here for nebula. Also working on getting my passport in 2024 because this country is getting to be too much in regards to trying to live a healthy life. I miss the good old days of 2009-2017, approx. At least back then I enjoyed social media much more, even if I was overusing it.
Yeah, but there is a healthy part of the Furry community on Blue Skye, there for it's successful in repressing biggots so far. So there is that.
Gen X on Facebook 😂
