    Yes, because people watching at home want to wait for the oven to preheat and the water to boil.. How else are they supposed to fit it all into a 30min-60 min show with commercials..??

      Right? And it's clear it takes longer to film because the Chopped rounds are 20 min, 30 min, 30 min. Then there is tasting, judging, deliberation, interviews, filming all those close ups of the 4th plate. The cooking and time limits are real, who cares if it is really a full day.

    • @tspiderkeeper
      @tspiderkeeper 5 лет назад

      Right maybe they need to look how long takes a oven to preheat and water to boil. Before saying stuffs fake which we all know most cook time is cut. And stuffs prepared like the oven and water beforehand

    • @CricketEngland

      In every 60 mins show you get about 40 of air time and in a 30 min show your prob get about 20 mins that’s once you take out the add break and the start and end credits so what do you expect...

    If you watch "Chopped" you know the water is boiling, the ovens are preheated, and the oil in the fryers is ready to go, that doesn't make the show fake! Everybody knows that!

      Exactly, I've worked on game shows and seen many filmed. Standards and practices are very strict. The water may be boiling and I've always assumed they were told the ingredients and given an hour to meal plan, but the cooking time will be exactly what they say it is.

    This is not anything new. If the judges ate everything that's put in front of them , they won't be able to move. The reason the majority of the food on these shows isn't donated once it's cooked more than likely due to health department codes.

    The sanitary thing is true. I've seen food network shows in which contestants touch their sweaty faces with their hands and then go back to touching the food that allegedly is to be served to judges without ever washing their hands. It's gross.

    • @jocelynharris-fx8ho
      @jocelynharris-fx8ho 7 месяцев назад

      Shows like Chopped, are militant about sanitation. On more than one occasion, a contestant was eliminated because they cut themselves and bled on the food, one "veteran" chef dropped food on the floor and thought he could sneak it on the plates. He was chopped. Same thing for a man who put raw chicken in the container of bread crumbs instead of pouring some out in a bowl and contestants who served raw seafood that was mean't to be cooked. They will call you out on it. I'm a former restaurant manager and have had to tell employees to wash their hands or even sent them home because they were sick and could contaminate the food and others. Unfortunately, that happens everywhere, not just in the food business.

      What they tell you on TV might be misleading but as someone who has been in the audience of over 100 game shows (yes almost everyone in the audience is paid to be there) they are always very strict about rules if someone is winning prize money. 1 hour trivia shows take about 5 hours to film and cooking shows are about 8-10 for the audience so probably longer for contestants.

    5:20 the food from the production can’t be given out because it isn’t made up to health standards for serving to the public. They could also get sued if someone got sick or chokes on it. So it’s safer to throw it away from a lawyers view point. I worked for a caterer. I asked them why we threw so much food away and that’s what I was told.

      It’s the same for a lot of places, including ones like Panera’s. Local laws/ordinances often mean you have to throw things out rather than give them to people because of exactly what you mention. It’s not worth it to places to possibly get sued.

    After the 90's to early 00's, The Food Network went down hill. That's when, and why I stopped watching their *"cooking"* shows.
    I used to be glued to certain shows before The Food Network changed. I don't even have cable anymore because most TV shows nowadays are trash, and also because cable is too damn expensive with so many unnecessary channels.

  • @gedias1

    If you want to trash a show, go after Beat Bobby Flay. He wins almost every time...and during judging which is supposedly blind, Bobby and the competitor stand facing the judges...and Bobby makes sure his body language displays which plate is his, and seeing as he is in control of who is on the show -- all those judges wouldn't dare be truthful, so Bobby --- who obviously has such a weak ego that he can't stand to lose, is made winner time and time again. It is NAUSIATING . I have no problem with Chopped's preheated water and ovens.

Yet if others do the same things the judges won't even taste it. And if the ingredients aren't all used they don't always get thrown off,that's the rules,so we watch other things.

    The food wastage should be against the law. It should be mandatory that it be sent to shelters, food pantrys, somewhere that it can go to use. Even the cakes. Donate to a wedding prior to the baking or even a shelter. Shelters feed a lot of people that would never get taste something like them. A cake that big would go around for dessert for a lot of people.

      You can't donate the stuff in most places because of lawyers and suing. Here in Virginia I went to a culinary school and we couldn't take any food home or donate it because of the chance someone might get sick and then could sue the school. The food would be perfectly fine when we ate it, but if someone took it home and left it in their car all afternoon in the Virginian summer and then ate it that night they would get food poisoning but could sue the school and would most likely win. We hated to waste food and would try to eat as much as we could, as well as get as many other students to come in and eat it. But our hands were tied and we could throw away tons of food.

    • @rayden54
      @rayden54 5 лет назад +2

      Grocery stores throw away food too and the truth is, I'm not sure food pantrys could even use it. Even ignoring other health regulations, getting food to a pantry and then distributing it takes time and most of the food on the shows is perishable. Either way, I think if they could donate it, they could. If only for the tax write-off.

    • @ebonimom6964

      Most places do it for liability reasons in case someone gets sick. Other places do it for selfish reasons. I have a friend that owns a Popeyes and he says he doesn't donate or allow his staff to take any food home because that would decrease profit. Why buy it when you can wait until the end of the day and get tons of it for free. At the end of the day, they don't care about starving people. They're there to make their money and that's it.

    In my humble opinion, they killed the Food Network with all these competitive shows. Maybe only one or two shows left worth watching. I've taken my foodie but over to the Travel Channel. Better and more likeable personalities, without the pompous arrogance.
    I've watched the Food Network from the very beginning, and like many other folks, I grew tired of Emeril.......but just casting him aside wasn't the right thing to do. He single handidly built that network, so even if he's remained very successful out of the limelight, he should still have a show on the network........in possibly a different form witch remains true to his core audience and fans.

      George Anderson the casino buffets in Vegas send the leftover food to local pig farms. They aren't the only type of business that could use the leftover food either. It could be sent to a processing plant to be used in making compost, sent to a power plant and incinerated to produce electricity, and probably a few more uses too.

      Kat Ann that’s not possible in every state because legally they can’t. Here in Maryland we had a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise owner who, at the end of each day would donate ALL of his remaining stock (donuts, bagels, etc.) to a local shelter. What did he get for his kindness? Sued and he lost his business! Not because any of the food was bad but because some of the people in the shelter felt as if they were being treated LESS THAN because said food was transported and delivered in clear trash bags. I know because I volunteered to deliver for the owner a few times. People suck and fu🤬s it up for other folks!

    I stopped watching food network for one main reason, you could tell it was not live TV cooking. Even Hell's Kitchen shows you that some of the tools used had help getting to the right heat/boil temps before the cooking camera's were on. The editing on chopped showed up that what they were eating something else altogether. Even iron chef seemed pre-taped and edited as if we didn't know that some of the cooking was pre-done, sort of like the morning show cooking segments..

    I have always cringed at the amount of cross contamination that goes on during cooking shows. The chef handles raw meat (of any type) and then reaches their hands into the salt and/or pepper to season the meat, without washing their hands. They continue using that spice throughout the meal. If everything they season is cooked, I suppose there is no threat. But if they are seasoning the food to serve then you are basically serving contaminated food. Eeek.

      It's not as easy as it sounds to donate food. You'd think it's as simple as just taking it to homeless shelters, and for a regular person sure but for a major corporation *nope*. So many laws, red tape and hoops they have to jump through. It's a sad but true fact that it's cheaper and less hassle to just throw it away. As it stands now the laws make it financially wasteful for a corporation to donate.
      P.S I'm specifically referring to precooked foods

    All cooking show are faked. Like Ina Garten for example. There are chefs set up in a separate kitchen on her property. Think about it. If she is slow roasting something , the camera crew can't wait 6 hours while it slow roasts. The camera's also never show you cleaning up and washing all the gadgets, pots and pans she uses. She shows how it will be made. The stop the camera, the cleaners come in and clean the kitchen, her off camera chefs bring in the perfectly cooked item which is swapped out in the oven with the raw one Ina had put in. Then Ina pulls out this perfectly cooked dinner in a fully cleaned kitchen, not a splotch on the inside of her oven. She also uses about $200 in ingredients and another $500 or so on table decorations and flowers. Then her fake friends arrive for the fake party. Do you really think every day 5 days a weeks she is really having a dinner party each time, or a garden party the next, a beach party on the third day on an on.

    The only REAL disturbing thing is the fact that food is being wasted. But that is only true for cooking competitions since programs like "The kitchen" or Ina Garden's show don't make 150000lbs of food. Plus I doubt that in non cooking competition shows filming lasts for 87 hours each time. This video is basically calling out food network's cooking competitions

      It was my understanding that on some of these shows, extra food was shared with the camera crew or if there was an audience, they could come up and eat after taping was over. When "The Chew" was on ABC, I think I remember them letting the audience eat what was made. On shows like Barbecue brawl, at least on the finale, the judges and the finalists sit down to share the meal that was prepared.

    Going to say what others have already said that no one is paying attention to...the food can not be donated to shelters because of the way it's been handled on most cases. It's against the health dept standards! The law suits that would follow if someone was made ill by it would be astronomical.
    Also if they are going to show people how to cook they need to teach at the same time, sanitary methods and kitchen safety...like not wearing long flowing sleeves, like bell sleeves that could catch fire, or drag through the food they're working on or catch on a pot or pan handle. Common sense people! Please teach it.

    On the donation of food thing, since it's already known that Americans throw away at least forty-percent of edible food, the fact that cakes left-can be donated to food kitchens for the poor doesn't seem like a bad idea. I know that there was the case, here in California, where one greedy attorney got a homeless person to sue a food pantry for getting sick off of day-old bread. With that decision, many charities stopped the practice and so did a lot of stores. This was horrible but the better stores never gave up and I'm happy to report that Trader Joe's is one of the biggest food givers in our area.
