I was fortunate to find one in a shelter in Adan Francisco. He is the most wonderful dog I’ve ever had. Such an incredible companion, great hunter, and family member. Love this video!
I found my dog 10 years ago abandoned on the street and I adopted it. For many years I didn't know its breed and i just found that it's actually a portuguese podengo.
@@teodora_nenova I'm glad someone else has had the same experience :) the two sisters, one is shy as hell but extremely protective and loving of the whole family. And then her sister is the opposite. adventurous, brave, curious, loves to be off leash and run. So funny to me that the two sisters are such polar opposites lol. Love em both
They are really an amazing breed. I'm from Portugal and I have one little smooth podengo called Mimo (means sweet or affectionate). He's such a loyal, funny, clever dog and just as you said: once you've got one, you just want another one!
Mrs. Judge I'd just like to say how brilliantly you presented the breed. From the very first minute it was so obvious how much you love your animals. You completely sold me on the breed, especially the smooth haired variety. I too have a border terrier but will be soon be looking to add to my pack and you will definitely be the first person I call.
Hi Betty, thank you for a very informative video on these little darlings. I became mom to my little Minnie aka Mouse about 3 months ago, she and here brother were at a Bay Area rescue all they knew was that she was from the LA area. I thought she was a rough coat terrier until I saw a dog show, it was immediate recognition. We also have a Yorkiie Poo (Max) from another rescue, they bonded on the way home and have been fast friends. Your right about the happiness, energy , curiosity, intelligence, easy care and so much entertainment for two retired folks. We are absolutely in LOVE with both of our kids. I had never heard of the breed until the dog show, so your video has been a big help understanding her many talents, ie finding my shoes, tissues, chewing on all then looking at me as if she didn’t do anything. She now has me trained very well. Thanks again! Cheryl Sacramento CA
They are very nice dogs ,but they love to search and hunt rabbits .The owners should go to areas where the dog can exercise is searching and hunting skills
They are hounds... not such good family dogs. My smooth medio is totally independent. Can’t talk for small or large. They are sight hounds and mine constantly watches the surrounding hills all the time.
It depends on your family. They are sweet, but VERY active and need to be able to run/chase, big time. They need a lot of exercise. The small ones are also VERY yappy and vocal and bark a lot at everything. My pequeno will try to chase birds, cats, and anything moving, even when on leash.
I have a rescue that we thought was a Chihuahua / Terrier mix but his hysterical antics and other nuances were so vastly different from our other Chi mix and not like any of the terriers we've known so I started researching and researching and believe I may indeed have a Podengo Pequeno (either full breed wire-haired or a mix) He is such an attention hog and loves to steal tissues, silverware, shoes, etc. He can easily jump onto the kitchen counter but we quickly put a stop to that once we realized it was him stealing things off the counter. He is tan and white. Some of his FAVORITE things to do is to rub his belly as he drags or scoots himself across the carpet using a single back leg to push then roll onto his back and scratch it wiggling across the carpet or yard. We've taken to just dragging him upside down (in his harness, not via collar) across the lawn for a spell because he will refuse to get up if he's getting a good scratch on.
Oh my goodness this description of the laying on the floor reluctantly wanting to move, rolling around in the same position and the boundless energy which lends to be easily distracted but always loyal and affectionate is such a distinct characteristic that I see in my tongue as well, I’m thinking of getting another member of this particular primitive hound group, perhaps a pharaoh or Ibiza and how and when I have enough space and before my six month old reaches the age of five
We are in the same boat! A rescue we adopted him from said he was a chihuahua terrier mix puppy. His mother was a chihuahua bc she gave birth at the shelter but they just guessed his father was a terrier of some sort. He’s wirehair, brown with somehow a bit of a blue undertone? It’s a weird brown coat that’s not tan or chestnut or chocolate lol maybe liver??? with some white on him too, and he has BRIGHT blue eyes. Kinda creepy, kinda cute. 😂 He’s insane. He’s good with people and dogs and cats (but he wants to absolutely chase and play constantly and the cats don’t always agree) and he wants to find anything and EVERYTHING to grab and run away with in his mouth
We brought our Medium Wired Podengo from Portugal to Ireland. It's a wonderful breed with a lot of characters. They're playful and fun but also like to lounge and cuddle. There are tons of Podengos in need of a home there and adoption is always a great help.
HI Betty. We just adopted a pup who we thought was a Corgi Jack Russell mix. We met someone who told us we had a Porteguese Podengo. Now we have researched the breed and learned a lot sbou g our new family member. Thank you for your video!!
We got a Podengo purely by chance 15 months ago, a rescue dog from Many Tears Animal Rescue, brought back from Portugal as she was found abandoned, hanging from a tree as a puppy. She was approximately 1 year old and had been in foster care for 6 months when we got her and she was afraid of man, especially men with dark hair, and leads. However, what a transformation and she has become my dog, the only male in the house and a wonderful dog she is too. Also, she now looks forward to walks and is no problem when shown the lead, she just gets more excitable about going out. We will be having another Podengo in the not to distant future once our oldest Jack Russel eventually passes away as she is currently my daughter's support dog, she has Asperger Syndrome. As others have said, such a gentle dog but so much fun when out walking, constantly on the hunt and easily distracted so time off the lead is limited. Here is a short video I made of her. ruclips.net/video/Rw6EDDV4ePI/видео.html
Hi Betty. Our family has a gold'yellow grande with a smooth coat, but the big ones remind me of the small ones quite often. They all seem so sweet towards their humans.
I have inherited a dog from my neighbor who is in memory care. This female looks and behaves exactly like your wire-haired Podengos except her ears do not stand up. She does shed a lot. She is blonde with a white collar and a white stripe between her eyes. Her eyes are golden and they are just beautiful. Her nose is rose-colored and her tail wags all the time. She is a very smart, well-behaved, playful, happy little dog. She found all of the dog toys I had in my house and you are right she does not destroy them. She shakes them and plays fetch. Then she rests her head on her toy. I think she would make a great agility dog. My neighbor found her at a shelter. I remember them telling me that they got a DNA test. He said she was a purebred but I never asked what breed. We're in Colorado, USA.
Thanks so much for a great video! I have been awaiting my first podengo pequeno for a year after falling in love with the sire at a dog show here in America. My puppy has finally been conceived and now it is just a matter of a few months until he is in my arms, fingers crossed. I was looking for a merry, straightforward little breed and believe this is the one! I can't wait to get my smooth boy and start my podengo pequeno adventure. Thanks for an informative video which confirms my suspicions that this is a charming, hilarious, easy-to-live-with breed. We will be showing in conformation, rally and obedience. :)

I was given a Podengo as a gift, I was living in Portugal for two years, working at communities/living on farms. A lovely lady had a bunch of puppies and one was essentially "forced" on to me against my will. They are MENTAL. Huge warning to anyone considering getting one, they are absolutely bat shit crazy. If you want a dog bred for hunting and adept at killing rabbits. This is the dog for you.
Also, the first time my Podengo found a rabbit, I thought it was being eaten by something or attacked by a wildboar. The sound they make is pretty scary if you're not used to it, just imagine the most excited whiny yipping sound you've ever heard. Rabbits are a drug to this animal.
A dog can look like one breed being something absolutely different 😅 we have a rescue mix from Spain and she looks 100% like a Podengo Pequeño. We did a DNA test (the have all the podengos in the database) and the little lady has markers of a Jack Russel, Yorkshire Terrier, Labrador (she is about 27cm in height 🤣) and Pekingese and some unidentifiable mixes.
It's a breed, so you would buy one from a breeder 😅 But I guess several rescue organizations from Portugal and Spain could have mixes or even pure bread Pequeños because Podengos are in danger of being thrown away after a couple of years in hunting 😑
Mac Plumber Not good mate, this breed has a high prey drive so they will constantly chase it, if you have cats I‘‘d advice against getting one, cheers!
Hungry! Ours goes mad when she sees a cat, makes such a funny sound and takes some holding bac. However, she did meet a friends cat in their garden recently and got a punch on the nose from it as it was cornered which made her jump. might work if introduced as a puppy but cant guarantee anything,
Depends. I have a cat and while it took some getting used to, they ended up getting along eventually. If it's a cat the dog isn't familiar with, he'll definitely start barking and chasing it.
I was fortunate to find one in a shelter in Adan Francisco. He is the most wonderful dog I’ve ever had. Such an incredible companion, great hunter, and family member. Love this video!

Hi, Portugal is an healthy county for the portuguese Podengo, thats why the are called the portuguese Podengo.
Are there any Portuguese Podengo breeders in USA?
There are around 600 Podengo's in the USA
My breed
Many dogs sound like scary beasts I find it very amusing. But like you say some people are not used to it.
I have heard many people say they are very much like a terrier. Would be interesting to compare yours to the temperament of some others :)
He's a wire coat, small to medium size, around 10kg he is three now :D quite the character
Disabled Velociraptor twat!
I have a podengo in my home with a free roam bunny hehe
If they put dachshund, chihuahua and yorkshire TERRIER in those small ones they aren't hounds but terrier curs.
All these years i've been trying to figure out what my dogs breed is. NOW I KNOW. but mine is white completely with only a little black on his head.
I love to adopt Portuguese Podengo dog. Where can I adopt it?
It's a breed, so you would buy one from a breeder 😅
But I guess several rescue organizations from Portugal and Spain could have mixes or even pure bread Pequeños because Podengos are in danger of being thrown away after a couple of years in hunting 😑
Do they make good hunting dogs can you squirrel hunt with them please let me know
these dogs will chase anything that moves lol
@YabaLovesKirsty why don't you just kiss my butt
How are they with cats?
I have two cats and I'm about to bring home a Podengo puppy soon. Hoping all goes well...🤣
Does not work ... podengos have strong prey chasing instincts
Would they make a good emotional support dog?
Mine would. She's very snuggly, and empathetic, but I didn't get get until she was around 5, so training her was challenging
Absolutely! Mine is registered as an emotional support dog. She is VERY smart, empathetic and protective of everyone in the household.
Why is white colour not accepted
I think i have one off these dogs but I'm not a 100 percent she looks a lot like one
Best dog for chindren
I have a podengo!! I also have a Japanese chin lol
My grand aunt had a dog that looked exactly like this but it was a mutt. It was free.
