No he didn't wear a HANS device, he specifically said he hated them, they was restrictive, and like a noose that would hang him if he wrecked. They made it mandatory to wear one the same year following his (and others) deaths.... a few of them died from basilar fractures in just a few short months - not just Dale. The underlying issue is such products are not cheap - are fucking expensive, thus it will always be an issue in the area of upcoming drivers (or riders) where adequate sponsorship for such items is lacking - most fearless drivers will throw what pennies they have into their cars to go faster vs adequate safety gear..... it is what it is when the name of the game is attempting to be the fastest out there to make a name for yourself.... Thinking exactly the same thing.. 😂 I’d listen to the professionals, he knows what he’s talking about after hitting walls at 100+ mph, and rolling over. lol
He did because he gives a shit about cleetus being safe, but also because he knows he's a little crazy and a liability. He can't risk someone getting hurt in one of his cars because that would definitely screw his partnership with Ford. lol
It's worth pointing out that if one person's wearing a helmet, everyone in the car needs to be. A skull to the head hurts, but taking someone else's helmet to the head is even worse.
I'm pretty sure a helmet just increases the chances of snapping your neck a guy died on this track with a helmet because he snapped his neck it wasn't a bad crash either Cletus was probably going faster... He really needs a full containment seat and helmet and Hans device that wall is solid

It’s really refreshing to see a prominent figure in the automotive and racing industry to not only admit when they’ve made a mistake but also teach everyone looking up to them the importance of safety
This is really admirably honest, which is part of why I enjoy this channel so much (you show good and bad stuff in racing as well, not just the highlights). It would've been pretty easy to just play this off as no big deal, as just 'I had a spin in a Lambo' and I think a majority of people would've rolled with it and not questioned it. So good job and good that you're looking after yourselves out there.
Hey cleetus. Just wanted to add a little something (personal experience) i had recently emphasize the importance of head safety. I fell down my stairs at home and racked my head off a step right at the base of the skull/top of the neck and it has shaken my world. I wasnt ever one of the "im young, nothing can kill me" type of guys but when i first hit it didnt seem bad at all. Saw doc the next day and said small concussion. The coming few days i was absolutely knocked on my ass. I have exhaustion problems (both mentally and physically) that will take anywhere from 3-6 months to heal. Also, i have extreme memory loss issues when i get tired where its like blackout drunk but without the drunk; i cant recall a thing that happened while tired. Its been a little over a month and i still have some gnarly issues but my doc is working to help me recover. This is something to take seriously. Thank you for taking safety this seriously.
Dave Steele lost his life around that bend in a sprint car a few years back. Always wear helmets and maybe look into softening the walls especially around turn one if your gonna be going full send a lot. Be safe Cleetus ! Do it for Dale ! And Steele ! ❤️
I'm not familiar with the accident where the sprint car driver lost his life but most of those injuries seem to come from the cars violently tumbling when they crash, a safer barrier won't really stop that either.
I think it was a mental thing, when you get in race cars. You see the roll cage and everything and put a helmet on. Those Lambos interiors had such a street feeling. You probably didn’t think twice about it. At the end of the day, anything that touches the track. 10/10 recommend a helmet. Even the track crew have helmets.
This is why we love you, Cleet, it would have been so easy for you to just not post this video, but you're humble enough to post it, admit you learned from the situation, and hopefully everyone watching takes something from this! Do it for Dale!!!
If I remember correctly when you first got the Freedom Factory you, James, and coop all agreed to wearing helmets any time on the track. Stay safe brother 👏🏼
Almost 40 years ago I was at a car when the driver lost control and it flipped several times and I was in the back with no seatbelt. I ended up halfway out of the car with a broken neck. I am incredibly fortunate to have survived the accident and I am running like a Timex watch. The wheelchair has slowed me down a little bit, but I still keep going. Were you helmet and put your seatbelt on! If I had my seatbelt on. I probably would have walked away like the other passengers in the car.
@Porsche Boxster Content I've been very fortunate with family and friends that have been with me through it all. I am very blessed when looking back at all.
“It takes seconds to put on a helmet”. For sure, brother. From one horsepower lover to another-I’ve been there, thinking I didn’t need one-and ended up having a concussion. I was out cold for 5 minutes, nearly ripped my right ear off my head and scared the ever living shit out of myself and everyone that cares about me. Use that safety gear!!!
I mean, it's probably not going to help if you slam in to a wall at 150+ in a stock (as far as Chassis/Body is concerned) lambo, kinda like worrying about having a helmet when you plan to go ride a Ninja H2 at very high speeds.
@@roji556 dude that is incredibly stupid there people who survived 250 mile per hour crashes on sportbikes with convert improper gear that otherwise would have killed them smh
hans device is meant to stop the head flying forward and snapping the spine while you're strapped in with a race harness. Street car seat belts are designed to give slightly to get rid of the neck snapping impulse, so I don't see how it would work in a street car ... but YES he should be using it more, especially since he has it for leroy.
Bud Smokegood -- they still work without race style belts but are extremely less effective almost to the point of worthless since they’re not being pressed against you they still allow your head to snap forward more than it would with belts due to having to take up the slack between them and your body before they can do their job .........what a HANS device actually does is force your head and torso to move together instead of your head snapping forward quickly and independent from rest of your body
Vaughn just the other day at 18:40 in that video even said”Next time wear a helmet”. You said. “True Dat”. Ok. So now put a helmet rack in the back garage and stock up on some helmet.....
Fairly certain this was the same day, I was at bradenton the weekend prior when Vaughn was there and during the day I saw the lambos leaving when getting back from the NMRA TS cruise

Great job saving it man. Always wear a helmet. I laid my harley down today doing about 55. Went off the road down a 40 foot embankment into a barb wire fence. I walked away perfectly fine. my bike was good. My face went into the fence. Without my helmet I'd most likely be dead or extremely messed up right now. I didn't want to wear it but for some reason decided to. Glad I did
When I was a teenager, I took the "short cut" to a friends house on my YZ 175 dirt bike using the old logging roads behind town which was about 2 miles instead of taking a car down the highway which was about 6 miles. I never usually wore a helmet only sunglasses and a baseball cap, this day for some reason I grabbed my helmet, my YZ was fast! I don't know how fast I was going but someone had thrown a bunch of big rocks in the road and I hit one throwing me off the road, ran into a Mountain Mahogany tree, was a hard enough crash to bend my forks and handlebars on the bike and put about a 4 inch gouge in my helmet that almost went clear through the fiberglass! I got some bruises and banged up a little, but I'm sure if I wasn't wearing my helmet that day I'd likely died, don't know why I chose to wear it that day, but glad I did.
The important thing is a) You're OK, b) You learned from it. I agree with everyone else saying a HANS device as well - literally do it for (because of) Dale.
Beyond that, anyone inside the fence should be wearing a helmet, anyone handling fuel wears a fire suit. That's a fairly common practice in tracks around the world. (All assuming there's a vehicle on the track.) All open cars require arm restraints, open/glassless windows must have a net or all occupants wear arm restraints. Then there's ear protection, which these guys don't practice too well.
@@sireuchre I've never seen half those things enforced on any track. Anyone In a car should have a helmet and suit but not anyone in the fence. I refuse to wear ear protection, I need to hear everything around me to the full

I thought for sure I would pull ahead and switch lanes... nope.... he was just as fast as me, and thank God much wiser. He slammed on the brakes and let me in front. Ever since then I’m much more conscientious of what I’m doing in the car. It was a very humbling experience.

Good shout that they should all take a first aid course and also they should have appropriate equipment on hand to deal with a fire. Fires can just happen and especially on a race track where cars are being pushed hard. If you can deal with a fire fast you can potentially save a car and more importantly save lives. Also if there was an accident there is a huge potential for fire.
Yep it's usually and emt/fire fighter on standby in a truck. It's best just to hire a guy who is both that wants some extra work and they will already be trained to first respond to an accident and will be able to direct everybody else there to help.
No Dale would not. "Many drivers, including Dale Earnhardt, resisted the HANS devices or anything that was similar to them, claiming that they were uncomfortable, and more restrictive. There was also fear that it would cause more injuries and problems than it prevented. Some even stated that the positioning of the device made the seat belts feel less secure or rubbed on the shoulders or the collar bone. Earnhardt referred to the device as "that damn noose", claiming the tethers would more likely hang him than save him in the event of a crash." Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dale was not into safety, he even wore open faced helmets.

This exactly. I agree, this stuff is what endears me to cleeter and the crew
Thank you for taking safety this seriously.
that’s scary, i’ve had 5 pretty bad concussions but none of them have taken more than a month to fully recover from, get better soon🤞
Dave Steele lost his life around that bend in a sprint car a few years back. Always wear helmets and maybe look into softening the walls especially around turn one if your gonna be going full send a lot.
Be safe Cleetus ! Do it for Dale ! And Steele !

I'd say they definitely need to look into the cost of SAFER barriers for the oval walls.
Tire walls at the least if not SAFER.
I reckon that's a pretty good plan - tyre walls at the very least!
I'm not sure its practical at the speeds this short track will see, you'll lose 3 feet worth of track the whole way around.
I'm not blaming anyone, but if the owner of the car shows up without any helmets, you don't think about putting one on.
dont mater if its a scooter ore a lambo always wear helmet for scooter and helmet in car when racing.
Far from "street"
Yup, helmets and a suit.
This is why we love you, Cleet, it would have been so easy for you to just not post this video, but you're humble enough to post it, admit you learned from the situation, and hopefully everyone watching takes something from this! Do it for Dale!!!

I agree with Justachipin, you need a HANS device as well. Be safe Cleetus, we all want you and the gang around for a long time.
hans device is meant to stop the head flying forward and snapping the spine while you're strapped in with a race harness.
HANS is also very important for side impacts
He uses a Hans device when he races. Obviously not in this video but he does use one when he's drag racing.
Everyone else: Look at my C8 Corvette

Definitely look into first aid training. Potentially have someone on staff certified. No such thing as too safe.
