While I still think there's room for improvement in a few segments I think this is without question the best take on the HL2 beta yet. The Ravenholm chapter was my favorite with all the creative use of traps. The weapon lineup is spectacular, especially with how you get to borrow the OP weapons from the other main characters for certain segments. Huge leaps from what I originally played, with my criticisms only really being nitpicks like "this final vehicle scene could use some more epic music" or "there should be a bit more going on for us to bump into in the intro before Kleiner's Lab" and "it's a bit hard to tell what I can and can't crash through on the water vehicle section so I keep crashing into things." Though sometimes that's used cleverly, like me going "die, bullsquid!" and the BULLSQUID rams into ME, sending the entire vehicle backwards.
As much as I love the original retail release of HL2 I think I like the original design of the beta environments much better. Some of the buildings that you had to go through gave a good idea of what it was meant to be used for while the town was active but when you look at it closer you stop to realize there's no proper way in besides the one person sized door you took to get into it. The one brick building you go into that has the elevator in it looks like forklifts are suppose to be able to go into it but at the bottom it's just an incredibly tall foundation with no ramps or docks of any type to get on to the elevator with any type of vehicle. The elevator also just leads to a rooftop room that has a skylight and the room looks just big enough for a person with a pallet jack to move things around in it. There's also just a single person sized door leading to a rooftop and nowhere else. The design of it is made to give you an idea of its' purpose but doesn't actually work out the more you look at it. I'll apologize in advance for my nitpicking, but for me it's just an observational thing. Out of all the maps in HL2 Ravenholm is my absolute favorite because of the feel and building architecture. But when you look at certain things much closer it makes you wonder how you're even suppose to get to certain spots from any of the buildings if the town was still active. So the retail version makes no sense. This uncut version does make sense as everything links up and goes to somewhere. Again, it's just me looking too much into things. :)
While it's incredible that we get to play this version of HL2, I can see why Valve were changing so many things. I like this version of City 17, it's much more atmospheric and the characters are very likable. I even start to prefer this version of Alyx and Eli. But especially the escape City 17 bit feels like an unnecessarily long walking simulator. I get that it's supposed to make you feel as lost as Gordon and feel the dread and fear. But in the end you just go from set piece to set piece without any real purpose or sense of direction. So I get why they picked up the pace in the final game and give you just enough time to get a feel for the seriousness of the situation. I don't get why they changed the whole location though. Maybe to remove the skyscrapers to highlight the citadel? As an East German the final version of City 17 feels too real, like home, with a very familiar sense of dread that we'd rather like to forget. But this version feels like a dystopian nightmare, set in a fictitious world (from my point of view), which I prefer for a Half Life sequel. So in pacing and gameplay, I prefer the final game. But in atmosphere and presentation, the beta is a clear winner.
@@hatti... I mean it doesn't feel there's a natural sense of where you need to go or what you need to do, which HL1 and HL2 did a great job with.
1:49:44 I like how the HL1 battery just gives 1 charge and emits a very beat up and worn out sound.
As well put together as this all is, it really feels like there's no proper sense of direction
can u elaborate? I kinda agree but i cant really put my finger on what it is that seems off about the progression
@@hatti... I mean it doesn't feel there's a natural sense of where you need to go or what you need to do, which HL1 and HL2 did a great job with. With how big and, lets be frank, barren some of these areas are, I can imagine it's easy to get lost in what you're supposed to do to progress. That, plus some story-writing stuff presented so far
@@TheEvilTacos Exactly my thought. The whole city escape section was individually designed well, but I really felt like I was just wandering aimlessly. I had no clue where I was actually trying to go, outside of escaping the city. I just kept moving from giant city area to giant city area.
@@octodaddy877 (Guess how Freeman felt?)
You both are just flat wrong. There is clearly plenty of direction in place here. The game just isn't telegraphing it to you with blinking lights.
@@OpenMawProductions Okay, I wasn't talking about knowing where to go in the level. I was talking about how I had no idea what my objective was. I just kept moving from set-piece to set-piece. Why am I in the manhack arcade? Why am I in this industrial area? Where am I trying to get to so I can escape the city? At least once I hit the sewers I knew where I was trying to go. And I don't care if that's how Freeman felt, it's not a good gaming experience.
Oh Yeah!! You just playing Half-Life 2 Raising the Bar, it is important game that you can be a good player. Definitely, I really believe this Half-Life 2 Raising the Bar.
But any game is important to be a good player also raising the bar is a book meanwhile this is a mod of hl2 that is referring to the book.

@@tisbutanantifa Regrettably True.
I have a spare dictionary I keep on my desk, you want it?
Can't believe they actually added the cremators to the game. Hoping that the other cut enemies also make it to the final release.
Waiting for either gargantua or the Antlion King.
Whole mod is amazing and Im looking forward meeting Dr. Breen and seeing his early story.
41:34 that scream from the metrocop sound way human when he dies
The combine feel much more imtemdating in this version.
i do kinda prefer the beta over the final version that we got
ещё и 2 часа! спасибо брат за видос)
So, this is just a Super-Charged Version of 'The Half-Life 2 Beta'
Nice.
i absolutely love the urban environments awesome
This is the 1984 Alien Dictatorship That Half-life was meant to, the modders did an amazing job with this one just missing the final chapters tho
1:09:31 did anyone find a use for the valve behind the door
When the combine hit the dark and griddy
1:19:56 Are those SeaEyes? They look HoundEyes but they have fins now? (or gills? i can't tell)
People said they were skinny and not playful or joyful. Unlike the ones you see in half life 1
They’re unhealthy houndeyes
When you think of a mods that restores unused content, You would usually think of demakes or one-to-one recreation, but I like how this mod looks more like a remake that has everything the beta game had including the original storyline
1:13:08
There's a secret area from Half-Life 1
"When all of this is over I'll give you your beer"
Barney Calhoun -
Gordon arriving in City 17 at night gave that part a nice creepy feeling then in vanilla HL2
Absolutely Amazing
1:51:24 this whole clip is just so peaceful and chilling, i actually love this.
1:51:48 that is so adorable.
36:25 anybody else realize this is the hyperborea? very cool detail!
"Gordon! That Dropships Coming Right For Us! AAAAAH-" -captain Beta Vanve
Jesus, the Consul's voice is a lot more demoralizing than Dr. Breen.
Hehe... valve puzzles...
Amazing reimagining though.
I 'm glad I'm not the only one who likes to nod in enthusiastic agreement with NPCs.
Is that one of the voice actors from entropy zero 2? (3:40)
Also it's the 3650 voice actor here (15:41)
No its a half life 2 beta metrocop line they also used those lines in entropy zero 2
Ah
Twas all so well! But the Gman part just made me laugh
God the Civil Protection are scary as hell I’d probably crap myself
Pick up that can

Alright, you can go
"Metrocop chuckle"
coward
This game was so dark and gritty
I don't mean to be childish... but why do the bodies ignore objects?
For example: 2:08:20 is a headcrab's dead body being pushed and then clipping into that gearbox.
Cause that’s how corpses work in Half Life 2.
I must admit, though the Ka-27's good, the finalized Hunter-Chopper is much better in terms of looks. Much more in-line with the Combine's aesthetic.
Agreed
Why did they change the metrocop model? It looks kinda odd. The mod looks really good tho
54:00 What's the name of the background music here? I like it!
Wow, not heard of this mod before. There's so many changes!
1:30 Why it sound like he said «You remember this guy... »?
this was so good, i loved this video
No screaming kids, no drunk tourists, no crowds and traffic jams... Just silence and solitude.
Sounds like a world just for me.
Will admit while I like these Combine, I still prefer the almost inhuman and robotic voices we got for the combine soldiers in the launched game
Still suprising me after so many years
This was done so well
Holy shit it’s dark and griddy
Guys, I know this mod looks GREAT but holy SHIT IS IT confusing. Literally have no idea where i'm going, proceeding is basically a happy accident in this game.
true
I like that
Makes citadel looks big
Reminds me of the book: raising the bar
Wow in the beta version it seems Gordon didn't really know Issy or Barney, and he got his original MK IV HEV suit instead of the updated MK V. I much prefer his relationships with these guys in the released version than in this one.
Well, Gordon doesn’t really say anything. Also, I’m pretty sure this mod just kinda adds that.
