This sequence of Gordon sneaking through the city to get to Kleiner's lab by himself is honestly much better than him getting chased, beat up and conveniently saved by Alyx, it also gives you more opportunities to witness what the city is like under the rule of the invaders
Yeah, these parts were such a bore to get through after replaying the game so many times.
It would be but getting beat up makes more sense the combine know how dangerous he is he killed the the nelihentg and is a survivor of the black mesa incident
I agree to some point but this mod makes the start too streched out, as if to teach you the generic layout of the city. At times it feels a bit too random. It would be fine if they make you revisit the same streets during the uprising, but it is still too long. It is also as if they try to show you every bit of non implemented concept about the city.
Agree
@@monkey2634 the combine didn't even know about the nihilanth or Gordon freeman, it's only after you go into the said restricted area and are not seen that the metrocops are onto you

We literally just got half life 2 from different alternate universe 😂 the modding team did a fantastic job and cant wait for all chapters when it’s done. ravenhlom and the shotgun in this mod is perfect
A lot of games would Look very different in that one Alternate universe

@@minimaggiitthat’s what he’s talking about… Half Life 2 was very important so it would be a decently noticeable version of that time travel thing with stepping on a butterfly.
This will.have been the final Half Life 2 if there were no rush to end the game because of a leak.
this version heavily Resembles 1984 in my eyes, the aesthetics, the dark ambiance, the grim reality of having No freedom of speech, thoughts, or even opinions.
it really brings out the true horror Half life 2 deserved and as much as i absolutely adore half life 2, this version hits the aesthetics and dark grim vibe of 1984 100x Better than the original. I genuinely love this.
Almost like release HL2 doesn’t want to be known as 1984 but with some aliens:the game.
@@Megajaybreaker4Kinda surprising how HL2 got away with Breencasts and blue denim citizen uniforms yet never got the 1984 reputation though

This beta version of HL2 just oozes with atmosphere
Very dark and gritty
This version is really grim, specially the urban environments. Also, loved the sleek visual of the boat. OTOH when Bolloxed took the Digger and started to running over pretty much everything I couldn't help but imagine the Police Squad theme playing :D
That's so cool of them to have some relics of the past be aged in this version of the game. Especially around 1:49:40 where Gordon picks up an old fashioned 'OEM' type battery pack for the HEV, hence why you hear the indicator beep twice in a rather defeated low powered hum, which normally afterwards would be 'Power is --%' indicating vocally that's how it was designed in game. The charging station that was operational yet worn out overtime too being more obvious but a nice nod back to the old Half Life 1 days.
This is an amazing mod. I can’t wait to see the Depot and Air Exchange
The air exchange will be in division 4.
@@Real_Gordon_Freeman Can’t wait!
@Gamer dude Yeah I really don’t know what its purpose would be. I’m sure the developers came up with something about it.
@Gamer dude how is the hud appearing if Gordon has no helmet HMMMM?
@Gamer dude honestly I prefer retail as it's much more subtle than beta and is in all honestly an amazing game.
Making Annabelle into what I assume is a proper 45-70 rifle loaded with hollow points, and then giving to the player is probably one of the best decisions this mod has made.

This is really good, the way they introduce the characters and give exposition seems well done too. A very good vision of the early Beta, and i really appreciate the work thats been put into this. I do think it could be abit more nicely polished up like Half Life 2 but maybe when the developer are finished they can do that if they like.

I've played beta maps quite a lot. I must say the way they tweaked them up, is awesome. Well done. Good gameplay.
fun fact: in 13:20, the entity was actually called the "cremator", one of the abandoned concept enemy by valve, the reason of being abandon is when the beta hl2, in the map d1_garage_01, the cremator was actually created by kid

This looks really promising so far!
Great work on the vid as well!
Can't wait to see division 3 this sure is amazing!
I hope they do a Part 3 and 4 of the HL2 Beta Redux. This was awesome.
So this is how much zen life Valve was going to put in, but then only added barnacles and headcrabs and zombies and those new antlion bugs? I always thought it was weird we didn’t see more zen creatures in base HL2.
I always thought that the combines killed off their species by the time gordon comes along
It was AWESOME!!! I felt myself really excited every second of this gameplay!
But, when the lights were of in the end... I didn't believe it! Is that really all? Game over? Or maybe it's to be continued?...

If I had to choose between living in this version of city 17 or the finalized version, I would happily choose this one. The reason why: because at least the headcrab hosts aren't conscious!
As well put together as this all is, it really feels like there's no proper sense of direction
can u elaborate? I kinda agree but i cant really put my finger on what it is that seems off about the progression
@@hatti... I mean it doesn't feel there's a natural sense of where you need to go or what you need to do, which HL1 and HL2 did a great job with. With how big and, lets be frank, barren some of these areas are, I can imagine it's easy to get lost in what you're supposed to do to progress. That, plus some story-writing stuff presented so far
@@TheEvilTacos Exactly my thought. The whole city escape section was individually designed well, but I really felt like I was just wandering aimlessly. I had no clue where I was actually trying to go, outside of escaping the city. I just kept moving from giant city area to giant city area.
@@octodaddy877 (Guess how Freeman felt?)
You both are just flat wrong. There is clearly plenty of direction in place here. The game just isn't telegraphing it to you with blinking lights.
@@OpenMawProductions Okay, I wasn't talking about knowing where to go in the level. I was talking about how I had no idea what my objective was. I just kept moving from set-piece to set-piece. Why am I in the manhack arcade? Why am I in this industrial area? Where am I trying to get to so I can escape the city? At least once I hit the sewers I knew where I was trying to go. And I don't care if that's how Freeman felt, it's not a good gaming experience.
There’s a lot of great stuff in the HL2 beta that is (very) slowly being used in subsequent instalments since the final release. The final version is still probably the best one though. It’s more defined and streamlined. The beta takes place over about 3-4 weeks and would probably feel like a real slog to play through
actually over 4 days
raising the bar doesn't feel like a slog to play through though
None of what you just said is true lol. 3-4 weeks? What?
Wow that felt like watching a good movie. I clicked the video just to see what it is and watched for 2 hours without noticing

I don't want to watch anything about this 'til you make the walkthrough!
I can't wait to fight the Combine Guard. They've been really polished compared to their old beta model and I hope they're as tough as e3_terminal built them up to be.
I am a little bit disappointed that the Gonarch is not a boss fight. But the whole Ravenholm chapter is definitely great. Mini boss battles(Gonome like Zassassin), more creative traps and the game let you use Grigori's Annabelle to protect himself. Very good ideas
gonarch was never a boss in beta
@@axelbermudez7915 Yup. But that doesn't mean they just 100% follow the HL2 Beta. For example, the Zassassin is definitely not a Gonome like mini bosses in beta. More like the original design of fast zombie. But they still keep the fast zombie and change the Zassassin to a mini boss type enemy. Hey! Isn't that a cool litte change? I mean I won't mind they do a little change instead of following HL2 Beta 100% if the differences are good actually.
@@beaneatingoni1353 it would still undermine the concept of how the combine completely overpowered and crippled the poor thing and cruelly hung it up to endlessly produce headcrabs. either the combine weaponize it and it becomes a boss or they force it to be a headcrab dispenser to infest ravenholm, can't really do both without diminishing each idea
@@hatti... Maybe we could fight a complete healthy Gonarch in the future of the game? Since I found the Big mamma npc code in command console list (They may allow us to fight Gonarch in the future).
@@beaneatingoni1353 since the "big momma" gonarch in the cave is obviously not the same one gordon killed in HL1 implying it's one of many, I can see that happening. Like it somehow broke free of the combine perhaps due to the resistance messing up their military. Sounds pretty cool now that I think about it and could exemplify the combine's weakening grip on city 17 as freeman leads the resistance against them
That section where you on the streets having firefights with metrocops while consulcast is echoing in the background and then getting chased by a chopper is one of the most atmospheric stuff I've seen in recent years
Wow great walkthrough, I always enjoy your videos nice mod .Better weapons
The Combine Soldiers sound more threatening and the Citadel looks more intimidating.
Beta Combine soldiers were not slave borgs. In the original script that showed a few times including them talking about rebel supply caches

Now, the team behind this mod have reworked Division 1 again. I can't wait (actually, I can XD) to see more about Division 2.1 that they say they're going to release soon or something like that and Division 3 that they'll probably release at the end of 2023 or well into 2024.
If it will release at the end of 2023 then i will have high school :(
I think Breen is better then the beta version of him (which I forgot the name of) because he is just funny and stuff also I can’t help but look at his hand gestures and think how long it took them to make them. I love those hand gestures.
If richter overtime saw this, he’d go BAETA
i do kinda prefer the beta over the final version that we got
As much as I love the original retail release of HL2 I think I like the original design of the beta environments much better. Especially Ravenholm, I couple pick out certain familiar spots that were plucked from this full chapter and used in the retail release of the map. As much as I loved the look of Ravenholm in the retail release of the game the design, layout and how buildings connected to each other never made any sense to me. Especially the spot with the railway and buildings with random elevators in them with no proper way to get to them. Now it makes sense to me seeing it like this. :)
@BBCDESTROYER2006 I know. But when you look at the uncut layout from Ravenholm in this recreation of the HL2 Beta it also has areas blocked off as it should. But it makes sense as to where everything leads. There were spots I could pick out that were familiar from the retail game but they all linked up to other areas.
But when you look at those same areas in the retail version of the map they go to nowhere as if the map was rushed to get the game out on time. There were also hidden areas you crawled into to get health and ammo but made no sense being there other than for that purpose.
Some of the buildings that you had to go through gave a good idea of what it was meant to be used for while the town was active but when you look at it closer you stop to realize there's no proper way in besides the one person sized door you took to get into it.
The one brick building you go into that has the elevator in it looks like forklifts are suppose to be able to go into it but at the bottom it's just an incredibly tall foundation with no ramps or docks of any type to get on to the elevator with any type of vehicle. The elevator also just leads to a rooftop room that has a skylight and the room looks just big enough for a person with a pallet jack to move things around in it. There's also just a single person sized door leading to a rooftop and nowhere else.
The design of it is made to give you an idea of its' purpose but doesn't actually work out the more you look at it.
I'll apologize in advance for my nitpicking, but for me it's just an observational thing.
Out of all the maps in HL2 Ravenholm is my absolute favorite because of the feel and building architecture. But when you look at certain things much closer it makes you wonder how you're even suppose to get to certain spots from any of the buildings if the town was still active.
So the retail version makes no sense. This uncut version does make sense as everything links up and goes to somewhere. Again, it's just me looking too much into things. :)
While I still think there's room for improvement in a few segments I think this is without question the best take on the HL2 beta yet. The Ravenholm chapter was my favorite with all the creative use of traps. The weapon lineup is spectacular, especially with how you get to borrow the OP weapons from the other main characters for certain segments. Huge leaps from what I originally played, with my criticisms only really being nitpicks like "this final vehicle scene could use some more epic music" or "there should be a bit more going on for us to bump into in the intro before Kleiner's Lab" and "it's a bit hard to tell what I can and can't crash through on the water vehicle section so I keep crashing into things." Though sometimes that's used cleverly, like me going "die, bullsquid!" and the BULLSQUID rams into ME, sending the entire vehicle backwards.
Just played it. Easily one of the greatest Source mods ever created. Now it's Dark Interval's turn.
Dark Interval is literally dead
@@ChronosHVT-g3uit’s not, things take time
While it's incredible that we get to play this version of HL2, I can see why Valve were changing so many things. I like this version of City 17, it's much more atmospheric and the characters are very likable. I even start to prefer this version of Alyx and Eli. But especially the escape City 17 bit feels like an unnecessarily long walking simulator. I get that it's supposed to make you feel as lost as Gordon and feel the dread and fear. But in the end you just go from set piece to set piece without any real purpose or sense of direction. So I get why they picked up the pace in the final game and give you just enough time to get a feel for the seriousness of the situation. I don't get why they changed the whole location though. Maybe to remove the skyscrapers to highlight the citadel? As an East German the final version of City 17 feels too real, like home, with a very familiar sense of dread that we'd rather like to forget. But this version feels like a dystopian nightmare, set in a fictitious world (from my point of view), which I prefer for a Half Life sequel. So in pacing and gameplay, I prefer the final game. But in atmosphere and presentation, the beta is a clear winner.
1:47:44 if you are going to play the game, at this part there will be a shack on your left. There will be a tv that shows a gman shadow and turns off. Almost gave me a heart attack

I like that
Makes citadel looks big
Holy shit it’s dark and griddy
I think that Beta is much much better than final HL2 release. Gloomy and darker. Much details like Gonarch's womb at zombified city. That explains everything about infestation. There is a lot of small things. Shotgun alternate fire is correct. Instead of stupid citizens (resistance) there meant to be conscripts and - that is my idea - they might be commandered by Adrian Shephard. Barney should be deleted. Half Life 2 is not a bad game, but changes went wrong way. I think that some manager has ordered to remove the best levels, weapons and characters just for fun , just to spoil the whole story. Now we have plot incomplete (ravenholm). The main badguy - Consul would be much charismatic than Breen.
The conscripts were lead by Commander Vance(Eli was a whoe different guy in the wasteland) Barney probably was with the rebels(different faction that had samd goal as Conscripts)

For the chopper fight in the canals, I had literally just abandoned my boat because I got it stuck with APC’s firing rockets at it. So I decided that I needed not to unstuck the boat, but get over the wall on the other end of the arena. I proceeded to trudge over behind a boat fairly close to the rightmost side until I got to the little door there are realized that there is a boat specific trigger. So at this point I think I’m probably just screwed until I had an idea, there were still some supply crates around the map, I could just stack them! So I spend nearly 30 minutes, going back and forth, to get 3 supply crates to the other side of the arena. At this point I’m down to 2% health, I got a couple of boxes stacked I have to climb them but the ai is on to my plan and is camping the area, so, I waited, and tried, and tried until I finally did it, I got past it he dam and into the next level, and was left with the knowledge that I wasted my time doing something most people could’ve finished an hour earlier.

Absolutely Amazing
I fucking HATE the raising the bar metrocops
I never got why beta mods love to kill Dr Kleiner when that was never supposed to actually happen as far as I’m aware.
I think it was a popular misconception
If I remember correctly that part got changed up some times during the beta, with one of the leaked maps even featuring a scene where the teleportation fails, Dr. Kleiner vanishes and only gibs return, implying that he died. They most likely weren't sure themselve about that either and experimented a bit at that time. So Kleiner's death did or did not happen, depending on which point of development you look at.

This "original" version of City17 (and HL2) are much darker and has "american" feeling instead of "post-soviet-eastern-european" which we've seen in release. This City17 looks more like New York of the 30'th.
Also - design of enemy APCs are much better. And those "mutants with flamethrowers" looks really scary.
Overall atmosphere looks much more like "scary-evil dictatorship", than what we got in release.
(Especially moment, when soldiers are marching through the night street in columns - Yeah! That's it!)
And some alien flora/fauna looks different. More "otherworldly"
It's like designers were highly inpired by J.Orwell and H.P.Lovecraft.
Why did they changed the concept? Who knows.
I don't want to say, the release version is bad, but here we definitely see something much more artistic and atmospheric.
The voice actors sound like they were hired from Fiverr
A good mod with a bunch of new assets, looks interesting, good old gameplay, but this is no longer Half Life, something is not right. I'm not saying that the mod is bad, on the contrary, it's good, but it's not Half Life anymore, Dark Interval is better in this regard.
Yeah, it looks awesome, but it is not very faithful to the hl2 beta or hl2 in general. There are elements from hl2 beta and previous games but as you say, this doesn't seem like the game valve had in mind when they were developing hl2.
Better and improved Half-Life
I wouldn’t say improved OBJECTIVLY
