But Im scared to use a detergent to wash my mask since it might irritate my acne skin
Thought I'd ask you since your a dermatologist 😁
I use just rince and scrub with warm water and then put it in dryer on low

I prefer to hand wash my masks personally, the wire nose pieces are crucial for me so I want them to last as long as possible! I discovered on TikTok that a salad spinner is an easy way to “agitate” the fabric while still being gentle on the nose piece - and OMG it is so much easier than the bucket method. I still wear gloves, and I prefer a scented laundry detergent, helps keep the mask “feeling” clean longer when I’m wearing it. I found the elastic ear loops shrink in the dryer, so I prefer to air dry mine ☺️

@Liz Anderson Fabulous idea using the salad spinner! I have one that I use specifically for some delicates, but hadn't thought of using it for my masks. Thanks for sharing! Wishing you and your loved ones safety, peace, and as much light hearted laughter as you can get in these stressful times.

I have a dozen nice masks collected up now to change them 4 times over my 9 hour work day, and wash them all after every 3 days. A handy smallish pail under the kitchen sink to dump them into when I get home, and a bottle of Ivory unscented beside it. They get hand agitated & rub together in hot water in the pail, left to soak, agitate & rub together some more and rinse well. Roll them all up in a microfibre towel then straighten them and lay them out to air dry overnight on a dry towel. All of 10 minutes work. They seem to keep their shape and fabric crispness better than by hanging. Now with cooler weather they’ve been slightly dampish still in the morning but 2 minutes in the dryer and they’re done. I haven’t had any trouble with mask acne but, besides frequent mask changes, I think it helps that I took to flossing and brushing after eating anything at all, and quit wearing makeup under the mask. Just moisturizer and a dab of vitamin E oil and, along with the breath humidity my skin hasn’t been this good since my 20’s. I use a zip lock for each set of daily clean masks and whatever old bag for the dirty ones. I wouldn’t waste a ziplock on them, sometimes I just use my rinsed out lunch containers for the dirty masks.

The elastic may not last as long due to the dryer heat but if you don't mind replacing them more often, that might not be a problem for you. Heat exposure can deteriorate elastic over time and you may see them stretch out as a result.

I have silk masks that I like because they're very soft and feel relatively cool for wearing all day at work, I find them less annoying so it might help with irritation if rough fabric is causing problems but they still need to be washed everyday. However I don't like them for walking/exercising, because they are so soft they easily get sucked against my face and into my mouth and they seem to get damp from my breath quite quickly even when it's not very cold.

I still get maskne, no matter which mask I wear. I just started using clay masks more to help with my skin. Silk isn’t a great material for face mask due to the lack of filtration. You’re better off using a mask with 100% cotton or a cotton/poly blend (similar to t-shirt material)

If your mask has the same fabric inside and out . Mark the face side with an '.' so you always have it toward your face. Your hands touch everything, so keeping them in your pocket isn't the greatest idea. Just do your best everyone, wash and wear your masks!

Hey, thank you for this video. I wanted to know if you could give us some tips on cleaning and maintaining the products that we use to clean our homes or kitchen? For eg : a scotch brite brush which is used to clean sinks or wash basins, or scrubs etc. Something basically for deep clean and disinfect them as well. Thank you.

Thank you. Propper mask hygiene is very important for not getting sick and it's something that the politicians and even doctors haven't said at all in their public service announcements resulting in alot of people using dirty mask they have been wearing for multible days which is worse than wearing no mask at all.

Good video! Wasn’t sure if my silk mask should’ve been going on high heat!
Wish you mentioned that we need to cut disposable mask straps to prevent damage to wildlife 😭

I have 2 masks that feature a portion of Van Gogh paintings (Starry Night & Almond Blossoms) & 2 by Claude Monet...Water Lilies. They are 3 layers...but I insert a disposable 5 layer filter in the masks ....if I shine a flashlight thru just the mask, it shines thru...but w/the 5 layer filter inserted in the mask pocket, light does not show thru & thus offers much better protection.
I was just using disposable ones for months but I've gotta say, wearing the painting masters has made wearing a mask much more tolerable. I'll probably be getting some other designs as well.
I hand wash the masks & let them drip dry.

You can fill a glass or ceramic microwaveable bowl with detergent and water and just microwave your masks. You can even use the Lysol laundry sanitizer in your rinse.

I like pretty mask and will coordinate with my outfit when possible. I work in an elementary school, so I have a few “novelty” type mask... two with school theme design, one with Corgi’s that look like my dog, one with our school mascot, and seasonal patterns.

Just saw this video. Super informative and helpful. But what about the masks with things like rhinestones and glitter. I know some people wear those types over surgical masks just to make them more fashionable. Things like rhinestones, glitter, and certain embellishments have been known to fall off during washing. What would be the best way to wash those types? Thanks.

I hand wash it as soon as I walk in the house and use a clean one if I go back out again. I have several and keep clean ones in the car. All mine are white 3 ply cotton. Maybe one day I'll tie them.

Still trying to find one that fits! I'm making some. My broken nose from a car accident in 1997 doesn't like the flat pleated masks. The duck billed type may work.
And, I see a lot of people on the bus who are trying to use the one size fits all type, but these don't fit over the nose. So, they end up fitting UNDER the nose. So, there's still work to be done.

I keep a mesh, delicates laundry bag in my vehicle to toss used masks in. You could easily line your dirty basket with one to make tossing them all in the wash super simple. I went to the Dollar Tree and got a couple of the single bra-sized bags and we have one in each vehicle and I have one in my purse so it's easy to toss them in with whatever load I'm doing that day and keep them protected from snags.

Most of mine are black as it goes with everything I wear. I just came home from TK Maxx and bought some cute Halloween themed masks. Just for a change and to make someone smile behind their own mask 😊
