Maryland ITV - Under The Blue Umbrella opening (1977)

From my personal collection (Tape #2). The opening to Under the Blue Umbrella, a nationally syndicated children's program from the 1970s. This was recorded from Maryland ITV, a division of Maryland Public Television sometime in early 1990.

It was originally produced in SC by SCETV, then picked up by PBS and other public television stations. I recall this and Under the Yellow Balloon (the 80s version).

Yes indeed we watched both the blue umbrella and blue under the yellow ballon in class with work books for each shoe in SC!

You don’t know how much this has made my day!!! They used to show Under the Blue Umbrella when I was growing up on Mississippi ETV back in the day, and it has stayed locked inside my brain for over 30 years. It’s rare to even come across these types of shows anymore unless you have them recorded on VHS somewhere. Thanks so much for uploading! xoxox

I guess they must've been still been showing this when I was a baby/toddler in the 80's, because I've spent decades remembering part of the song and the logo and not being able to find anything until just now. Thank you.

From what I've been able to find, Umbrella was syndicated to select PBS stations well into the '90s with the last known airing of it being on January 29, 1998 at 12:30 p.m. on Rhode Island's WSBE-TV (now-renamed Rhode Island PBS). For a program that ran so long and had plenty of viewers as evident by this upload, it's surprising that more of it has never surfaced! I'm glad you were able to find this video and hear the theme song after so many years. :)

I mainly have Maryland Public Television dating from 1988 to 2018, but I haven't gone through everything yet. Some of the earlier tapes (1988 - 1990) could have more ITV programming on it before it was phased out completely. If I find any, I'll upload it ASAP. :)

I cannot find anything about this show online and I have no idea what this show is. Can anyone explain what exactly it was?

The program was, from what I can tell, a generic educational program about different aspects of life for children between the ages of 5 - 12 about the world around them. I have most of a full episode available on my channel titled "Family Portraits" which showcases three different lifestyles of families in 1970s United States. I have no idea what any other episodes were about. The program appears to have began airing in 1977 and ceased production most likely in the early 1980s. Reruns continued on select PBS stations into the 1990s, with its last ever airing on Rhode Island PBS in 1998.
