The whole of the middle easts oil is in shaunos garage
If he's changing oil every 5000ks you can see why. Modern diesel will go 12-15 thou easy. Old diesel every 10 years. lol.
yeah america might invade it soon
@@dartmoordave if you consider Shauno's garage you'd know he doesn't have any modern diesels so that's kind of a moot point.
@@Dylan_Scott His 79 is modern
LMFAO :-)
I need to stop watching these videos in the morning, my wife is getting concerned I keep poping beers in the Am.
Geez Shauno, that'd be $1500 worth of oil sitting on the shelves behind you, surely Sooty doesn't leak that much 🤣
xr6t gtx was about to say. Few changes there for sure
xr6t gtx i think he might have a land rover, they leek lots of oil
I thought the same thing a few weeks ago. I have not changed that much oil myself in the last 15 years!
He has got three diesels mate, that's 30 litres every 5000km at hard use!!
Guys, to much plastic!!! 200 ltr drum will beat it hands down even when the oil is on special. That’s my opinion cheers
Just bought my first fourbie, 2002 petrol Pajero. Your show has resulted in a hugely expensive shopping list. Love your work! Cheers
Congrats
That Jock guy... He is such a nice and polite person. Gotta love him!
Thanks guys for keeping me sane. I’m at home iv watched all the 4wd action DVD from ep114 threw till now. My young bloke is 6weeks old his loved sitting on my lap and watching/slept threw them all. It’s the best way to fill in time as I have broken both of my feet and I’m laid up for 10weeks. Cheers
I feel like its a whole different story over here in the US. Diesels are so rare.
Pretty much opposite, unfortunately. That's why I go straight six, torgue down low like a diesel.
Kevin Collins
That's because you guys are smart and the Aussies like tracktors.
3.0 diesel in my 2015 Jeep GC Overland 4x4 in Michigan!
Diesels are rare? Ever been to a meet? Everybody thinks they are rolling coal
jesse dutoit us is smart hmmm questionable
Shaun, Love to see your pitch on the 79, ' never been off road, highway only, light beach work'.
You guys got me into 4wd and absolutely loving it👍 can’t wait to see guys back out on the tracks
Watching for Colorado USA...Been a rock crawler/trail cruiser for 15 years. Colorado is rich with mining history so me and the family are now exploring more and getting into Overland Treks since finding your shows. Thanks for the time you guys put into your craft. Outstanding.
Love how you guys are posting 2 videos a week I’m always looking forward to seeing them
Big howzit here from South Africa mates! The lockdown rules over here are very strict and some days it's extremely difficult to keep the mental health at a functional level. These episodes have brightened my day more than a few times and more so keeps the spirits up during this mess we're all going through. Can't thank you guys enough. Already looking forward to next weeks episode!
Got my firepit going in the backyard, dog by my side and fresh coldie in my hand. Doesn't get much better. Oh wait, it does; New 4WD action vid. Hell yeah!
Had to look around, this describes me right now!
Happy to have you guys join us here in nz. We based out of Christchurch and have access to some beautiful parts of the country
I’d love to know how many beers you two bloke have before cooking segments because it’s always a crack up!
Just lovely watching, honest mates giving banter.
Good to see petrol 4wds getting a bit of attention, too many people disregard them without knowing enough! Great ep lads 🤟🏽
Here in the USA they dominate the diesels. Until the last couple of years, all our smaller trucks and SUV's came with diesel engines and if they did they were way to big and heavy, made for towing mainly, and they got stuck to easily. We get them in a lot of our popular platforms now and they're becoming more common slowly.
Agreed mate. There’s pros and cons to both but I think petrols have much more going for them than a lot of people give them credit for.
Absolutely mate, too many people write off petrol 4wds cause their mates cousins girlfriends uncle had one and reckons they’re crap! At the End of the day petrol owners know how good they are and that’s what matters!
Yeah mate, tb48 patrol here. Chops along 👌
@@Mosesk1988 yeah bro, wish we could still buy TB48s new in Australia.
Oldie but a goody !!!!! Awesome advice boys ..... opened my eyes to a few 4wd matters. Love your work
Started out with petrol for my first two 4wds and now onto a diesel. I loved my v8 series 1 Discovery, apart from being thirsty, that engine is fantastic off road. Peak torque at 2500rpm and sounds epic on the loud pedal.
That Disco ute will either have the 2.5L Tdi 300 or 3.9L v8 engine.
I hit max torque at 2800 with my petrol 5.7
That V8 is hilarious fun offroad, shame you need shares in an oil company to run them hard. Was the main reason I went for a td5 cos I want to do some longer trips.
Hi guys, I know this is afew months old, but i really needed to watch this tonight. I have had both petrol and diesel and love both. I am still getting over the fires we had down here, and i can tell you, I thought we were goners.
I had a 99 GU i was doing alot too, and was my pride and joy, but I lost her in the fires. So by default, well who knows. At least we are alive is all I can say...........tke care all and be safe
G'day I'm only 11 but I've been watching your videos since i was 2 years old. Love you videos keep it and stay safe
As a first time 4Wer i went with petrol, but shes a beast. Learning the tricks of the trade from you blokes. Thanks!
Haha when Graham said at the start that he was playing darts I laughed so hard because 10 mins before watching the video I accidentally threw a dart through the front of 1 new spotlight
Had a 94 Hilux 2.8L diesel, slug on road, beast off road, now own an 02 3.4L V6, Beast on and off road, miss the low range torque but love the power of the V6 and much easier to maintain without the need for more complex tools, the 5VZ-FE is one of the most under rated engines
Those 5VZ motors are an absolute weapon. Non interference and good on the loud pedal and even have great torque down low.. that motor needs to make a comeback. It's the only V6 that doesn't sound like crap either and actually has a pretty tough note to it
Great way to spend a Tuesday arvo cheers 🍻
Great work guys keeping content during lock down, have spent a lot of money during lockdown on my Bounty getting maintenance done. Did full front end balljoint replacement, new shocks and new rear shoes. Cant wait to get out this weekend to test it out.
Brings up the point I'm getting to - balljoints. 4wding is hard on they gotta check them often and properly. Keep them vehicles safe
From here in the States, you also have to consider even more things:
1. When new, diesels cost as much as 5k US more than the same vehicle with a gasoline (petrol) engine.
2. The cost of Diesel in the US is actually the same or sometimes higher than gasoline per liter (gallons here in the US). This is due to the very high environmental requirements for diesel fuel in the US. (we only run very very low sulfur diesel here)
3. Diesel is much harder to come by in the US than in other countries, gasoline is as common as water.
4. In some states, you actually CANNOT purchase a brand new diesel passenger vehicle as the state environmental rules actually BAN new non-commercial diesel vehicles from being sold. This is due to enviro regs dating from the 1980's when diesel engines in America were horrible black smoke blowing monstrosities.
So in America, Diesel 4wd vehicles are as rare as hen's teeth. Almost everything has a gasoline power plant in it.
Good info thanks mate.
I was just about to make a post like yours, thanks for beating me to it.
One other thing I'd like to mention about diesel in the States (or at least in CO), Diesel price per gallon doesn't fluctuate near as much as gasoline prices. Gas prices can shoot up (or down) 50 cents in a couple days, diesel usually doesn't change by more than 30 cents in a month. Diesel is nearly always more expensive per gallon than gasoline here; I can remember only two occasions in the last 3 years where diesel was cheaper.
@@nicholasalbrecht9357 Yes, here in Australia the oil companies exploit the diesel users because it goes further. Diesel is cheaper to make, not refined like gasoline.
Oh yeah man. I run a V8 ford explorer
Not to mention we're limited in choice. Diesels have only recently started filtering into anything smaller than a fullsize truck.
My old landrover series IIA swb had a four cylinder petrol with about 2 and a half horsepower. But the gearing was MAGNIFICENT, it was light, and it was unstoppable offroad.
I am a newzealander, still think this is a cracking show
I recently watched a video on youtube where a business in Victoria towed the same van up into the mountains and back with three vehicles. The vehicles were a Landcruiser 200, Y62 supercharged Patrol and a large American diesel ute. Much to everyone's surprise, the petrol Patrol not only towed the van more easily than the diesel 200 series, it had more performance and used less fuel! Very enlightening. The modern petrols can be as economical as a diesel.
Can't have a beer cause I'm under age 😂 But I'm still in the shed 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Same bruh
I'm on the same page, but let's go🤙🏼

As a truckie running in the remote areas of Australia for the past 30+ years, I went with the 1HD-T in a virtually stock 80 Series about 10 years ago. For the same reasons as you pointed out, fuel availability in remote areas, low end torque, mechanical simplicity over electronic complexity, & with 4 kids I needed a bus that would tackle anything Australia had to offer. She was high mileage, but meticulously serviced by a retired truckie, who toured Australia with a light pop top caravan for 3 years. Purchased for $12k. Since buying this she has now clocked up just over 750,000km. As she is so long in the tooth, I had the gearbox & transfer case rebuilt this year, & also had a Mark's Part-time 4wd kit installed with Aisin hubs. Next on my list is the engine. I have weighed up the pros & cons of 6BT v Duramax v 1HD-T rebuild, & have decided to rebuild the 1HD-T, with a 4500 stroker crank. I know there is a mob that has made amazing figures on a 1HZ & a 1HD-TFE, but now I cant find them. So any leads some of you have would be great. Also I would like to hear pros & cons in top mount v front mount intercoolers. I was thinking about grafting a 79 Series scoop onto the 80 Series bonnet for a top mount. Cheers
Beers in the shed couldn't think of anything better to do
Tuning in from Alberta, Canada. Love everyone at 4WD Action!! Keep up the great work everyone. Youve helped bring back the 4WD families around here everyone knows 4WD ACTION!!!!
Sam eyles has a petrol beast!
Jeshua Blockley I agree
Too right
I love beers in the shed! Thank you for finding a way to keep us in touch from across the big pond! 👍🍻
Can you please speak about insurance in relation to suspension lift and tyres.
I’m sick of people saying they’re insured with a 4” lift & 35’s (Vic).
IS this an issue in AU? In the US they don't even ask...
Im insured 5" lift 35s LS2 patrol lol shannons insurance QLD 👍 they don't care what's on your car
Weary Man everything is illegal here, but yes modifying your car is difficult, each state has their own restrictions. Permits and engineering could be required also.
Lots of people are insured with three inch lifts. Right up to that moment you make a claim. Then the insurance company says nah mate. Not legal.
In W.A your only aloud a maximum of 50 mm lift to overall height of the vehicle this includes suspension and tyres. Any higher then it’s off to the pits or engineers for new paperwork. As Jordy T said most insurance companies won’t say a thing about it. Take your money until you make a claim.
Jordy T . I could get “insured” with anyone. The first question they’ll ask when starting a new insurance policy is “is you vehicle compliant to the road worthy standard?”. All you say is “yes”, then as if by magic your insured, until you get involved in a serious crash.
thanks guys, being under lock down here i have been wrenching on my nissan getting ready for the trail. welding up a new front bumper right now to mount my winch on and fix some leaking hoses. Here in the us we don't get diesel trucks in small trucks.
I have a Petrol V8, and I wouldn’t trade it for any diesel on the road
That's because you mates get no cold. Diesel is horrible in the winter.
i have a 4 cilinder turbo diesel that i never trade for a petrol v8...never. petrol is bad in winter, bad in water, and consumes a LOT , my fj40 does a 12 kilometers per litre!!!!
Dunno there’s one Diesel engine Toyota built that I’m sure would change your mind 😁
@@adrianopezao4923 agree bro, I’ve got the same engine, half the rego half the fuel, half the maintainence. Owned petrol engines my whole life, first Diesel I’ve ever owned and I love it.
I bought a 2015 200 series because of the build you guys did the other week. God damn I love the low down torque of the diesel and the solid v8 turbo sound!
When i bought my hilux, i went 2.7 petrol. the reason being i work at an engine reconditioners workshop and the amount of 3l and 5l hiluxs (2.8 and 3 litre na) that come in with cracked heads caused by turbo and more fuel to make less power than my stock 3rz, makes it (for me) an obvious choice.
5l Hilux??
@@Fuckthesystem-ro5wm 5l is the engine code for NA 3l
@@brocksinclair66 thankyou mate 🍻
Hi from South Africa. I own a gen 4 3.2 diesel pajero for 5 months now and love it. I had a diesel ranger before. I was never a diesel fan, but I don't think I'll ever go back to petrol. I do less than 15k a year in milleage, so the fuel factor is in my favour. Thanks for the awesome videos guys👍👍
Here in the USA, up until recently pretty much all our trucks with diesel engines were built for towing and were far heavier than ones with gas engines. There's a ridiculous amount of small block v8 gassers on rigs here especially with the newer all aluminum light weight and very reliable LS based engines. It's cool to finally see our trucks and SUV's coming out with smaller diesels in them and/or people swapping them into their rigs with one's out of older car's and such. Id love to have a cheap diesel that has the same weight and power as a small block gasser but it's not going to happen cheaply or easily at all. I have both now but for different reasons and love both for different reasons. Edit: here in the USA, most of the country gas is a lot easier to get. There's many stations around me that don't sell diesel at all and live in Oklahoma which is full of diesels. Also, we don't have near as much open country to wheel like Australia and a few other country's. We have quite a bit but nothing like Australia at all and that sucks.
Yeah these guys are backwards from us in the States. I was thinking of swapping a diesel into my montero but it was just too expensive to get 200hp. I ended up going with a 5.3 and its almost done, and for a lot cheaper than a diesel. It would be nice to get 30mpg though
When I was car shopping I came across a 2005 mk Triton with a 3.0l petrol V6. Slowly over the past 3 years I've bought and DIY fitted mods and made a few of my own. I've taken her on some pretty decent tracks in Victoria and the old girl never let's me down.
I love a diesel! Torque down low is amazing but with a modern auto would it really matter if it was petrol?
I’m no expert, but i think that would just create more wheelspin.
You boys definitely need to come over the ditch and spend some time at Pouto Point (pronounced Poe-tow) epic beach runs, massive dunes including a fun run up to a lighthouse, forestry tracks and some excellent camping spots
I rebuilt my starter motor today, shoulda held off on the 3 stubbies coz i forgot to put the plunger spring back in🤔🤪
Those Snatch bags really are a quality bit of kit. I love mine!
Diesel all the way for me.
Vin... Diesel...?
100% agree my 4x4 is also Diesel and I'd never think of a petrol
That said the 300 in my 72 F350 makes its power and torque under 2 grand and paired with the granny 5 speed it's got more low end then a 1hz, I'll be replacing it with a diesel once its dead (so probably in another 48 years lol)
@@xtramoist9999 Johnny Diesel mate....
Thanks guys, you're an inspiration to the community. A big hello from the blue mountains
Petrol all the way for me, got to be a NA V8 though!!! I love the linear and instant throttle response of an old school V8 petrol, no lag, just instant power and torque. My V8 makes 420 Nm at 2500RRM and basically has a flat torque curve. Yeah, the ignition system is sensitive to water, but you can waterproof it. Plus in my experience an old NA V8 is more reliable than a turbo diesel. No high pressure injectors or pumps to go wrong and no turbo to go wrong. Yes the fuel bill is bigger with a petrol, however diesels are more expensive to buy and if an injector or turbo goes wrong that's your fuel saving wiped out. Plus for long distance overlanding and touring the smoothness and quietness of a petrol is far superior. Just carry a bit more fuel to make up for the decreased range.
This is the kind of honesty American automotive media outlets and journalists are INCAPABLE of.
It's why 4WD ACTION is NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD for REAL offroad content and advice.
That's my truck in the 'naked' photo, strap was going to a recovery point, that's not me on the bonnet, it's a mate and I'm behind the wheel still, and he's not naked, he had undies on, just funnier to make him look naked
Shaun and Graham - great show keep it up...
Just a little correction for you regarding the Disco Ute in this episode... The engine in a D1, if Diesel, is either a TDI200 if preupdate version or a TDI300 updated version both are 4cylinder 2.5 litre turbo direct injection engines...
Both are super slow and bloody amazing engines that go forever as long as they are regularly serviced...
No one:
Shauno: There's no doubt about it
I'm an American and totally love watching you guys! I wanted to ask if either of you have ever seen the Southern Rock Rods / Bouncers in action that we have here? If not, I know you would appreciate them... :) G'day mates!
Was looking forward to this
I kept refreshing my RUclips, here in South Africa we start the day with Beers in the Shed
Wankr
Had the diesels, now in a Y62 Patrol. After 170,000km in it, would never consider going back! So much more drivable and a better tow vehicle. Stuff having peak torque in only a 1000rpm band, over 500nm from 2000rpm to 6000 rpm is perfect.
Where has Rocket Rod been?... I miss him!
Lunamaria Agreed
How good is "Rocket rod" legend
Frank Ortisi the best 79 driver out there
Lockdown. He's in Victoria, Shaun in QLD and Graham in WA.
You fellas are on it. Was a sad day when I'd watched every full length episode. Got me through the first month of shelter in place 🤘
I'm building up a 1979 Hilux. If I wasn't in the states I would have gone diesel. Wanted the heart of a yota so I put in a bored out 22re went to 5 speeds from 4, running 4.56 gears, and dual lockers.. going to make that low wheel speed torque once I can track down a proper set of 470:1 low range gears and eventually add another tcase.. keep it up fellas!
Honestly jock i such a good driver he knows how how to wheel
Great show guys, I may not have a shed but look forward to watching each week... I just went from a Pajero 2002 diesel, great 4x4 since 2006 to last year an unexpected Hummer H3 petrol, yes petrol guzzler but some much cheaper in every other way with great clearances straight out of the box.
You two have convinced me, I’m selling my fancy new car and buying a 4wd, it’ll be Toyota sorry graham ;)
New clutch in my 4wd next week. Can get up the big hills again. I ran a bottle of Fuel Dr in my R51. within 1 tank of fuel my car was loosing rail pressure and it clogged my fuel filter. So it did its job getting the crap out of the fuel tank but hopefully nothing got into the injector.
I love my diesel but my god the sound of a big petrol makes me doubt
Diesel for daily and work. Big block v8 for toy
Beers in the shed, totally enjoyable episodes. Light hearted and informative. Sean , Graham and Jock make a good team. Three stooges of the 4wd world

Well Done Boys and 4WD Action Team. Great Job.
I just got the v8 Landrover Discovery thing is a beast 💪 i have had both diesel and petrol and definitely petrol for power and nice drive however diesel for low down power and reliability
As of reliability just don't go with a discovery 😂
Julien Lajarin or just make sure it’s maintained and it’s as reliable as any other maintained 4wd.
loving these shows. in south america myself right now, building a petrol Y61 for Overland use. you guys should ship those wrong side steered clunkers overhere and do a show or two here, i'd definitely be on board with that !

I left online work for this
You'll learn more here anyway.
Best thing about owning an FJ Cruiser is that there is no petrol v diesel arguments! (It’s almost as good as the look on modified Patrol owners faces on the Glasshouse power line track when you go around them)
I have a petrol, I like the power.
Petrol all the way
Love beers in the shed good just to sit down and have a laugh and gain some knowledge to Keep it up!
When will the dirty 30 be on the tracks I wanna see how it runs
It never will lol
Never been on this RUclips thing until this coved 19 stopped us from getting out. Can't wait to get off it.
Anyway; Owned a 1hz 80 series for 19 years, obviously loved that diesel 4by, had a problem with it before a big trip a couple of years ago. Mate lent me his petrol fj cruiser, did a 7000km + trip over all terrain. More fuel efficient over a longer trip than my 80 series.
Hence l ended up buying it of him, and still have it today. Petrol versus diesel, not bothered, they both did the same thing for me, just happy to get out there. Can't see what the fuss is all about.
"Diesel makes more power in the low rpms" This is not exactly true. Maybe some petrol motors but a stock LS2 makes more power throughout the entire powerband than even an FTE and weighs significantly less overall.
Hahah yeah they say diesel is better off-road but they all get bogged in the last ep and the petrol v8 gets through with a camper on the back 😅😂
@@bigboy9842 What blew 2 CVs at once?
matt rickard but I’m not talking about the CV s ? Even diesels have those, I’m talking about the motor

Diesel all the way. love the soot
Diesel is usually about $4k option on a truck here in the states and we are very limited on what we can get with a diesel. Diesel is also currently 56 cents more per gallon in western Pennsylvania at the moment.
who's got the stones to admit they prefer petrol over diesel here?
didn't think so
I do
Skelly I do. Petty landcruiser and love it
I had a tb42 patrol. The thing was a absolute animal!! But the fuel consumption almost killed me.
No shame here. Embrace it.
I bought a petrol 60 series because it was cheap. Aside from very affordable entry into Landcruiser ownership, I know petrol engines so if (when)it fails I could attempt a repair myself but I'd be stumped by any diesel wizardry.
My petrol cruiser may be thirsty but she's a very capable 4WD that will get me me where I want to go and I reckon I love it just as much as Shauno loves his Dirty 30
Nup but after owning multiple of both I've got the brains to admit I prefer a diesel
My TB42 Swb is such a fun capable little weapon. I like how it makes me smile every time lol
Old Diesel all day everyday
No electrics
Drive it with a busted alternator
Dead battery just bump start it
Simple bush proof long lasting
I don't have a shed hear in South Africa, but it's always good to see you guys programs.
The only thing currently here in SA is making it very hard for our 4WD Action SA fans to enjoy this new shed series with you guys;is having a cold beer with you guys.
Our enormous clever president has put a "no alcohol sale" al over SA, don't know till when.
So in the meen time we must enjoy the show without any refreshments
Im first comment ... How much power does the dirty 30 make
Hey guys luv watching beers in the shed, I’m rebuilding my 80 series petrol it started to just Raptor the whole truck n it got out of control started November n Raptor still not down but around 30 other things have been done lol
Call me crazy i sold a diesel cruiser for a petrol 105 👌
Brayden Clark
Crazy
But at least it wasn’t an automatic ... was it
I have a petrol 4.5 GU Patrol auto and I love it to bits! Yes it’s very thirsty, like VERY thirsty, and yes it’s kinda slow and doesn’t have much power but I take that beast out every chance I get, drive tough tracks and push the old girl to the limits. With no lockers but an auto and some good driving I reckon it’s an awesome 4WD and it doesn’t break the bank to buy being a petrol.
