  • For my 30th, I've bought myself a large rooted cutting from a "Osborne Prolific Fig" tree. In this video I discuss how I grow fruit trees in the central Texas summer heat, and some of the challenges I've faced with my backyard orchard.
Thanks again for watching Austin Texas Gardening!

My new Brown Turkey Fig tree wouldn`t start to grow until late July last year because it was so dry and hot in Louisiana. I had to put cardboard and thick layers of grass clippings in an 8 ft diameter circle around it, add more soil, fertilize and water it like crazy. I planted a cutting from it this year and four Celeste trees. I`ve added lots of grass clippings around them, bone meal, and organic fertilizer with soil microbes. Most are doing very well so far compared to last year. I didn`t dig large holes to plant them in the poor red soil so they can anchor themselves very well against high winds and I`ve heard this may make them produce fruit faster. We`ll get another hurricane soon enough and last year my corn was flattened in a bad storm in June. I saw a wild bunny and gave her a corn stalk and she nibbled on it for three days. She thought I was after her but realized I was trying to give away food and came back. Ha!

Nice profile pic lol, that’s good to hear, my families considered moving to Arkansas sometime soon, and I’m not sure what I’m gonna grow there. What garden zone are you in?

🎉🎉🎉🎉 Happy Birthday 🎈! That's an awesome gig tree. Oh no the poor trees that got weed whacked. Indeed the heat has been so detrimental. Enjoy your day with plenty of blessings.

Be sure to take a few cuttings before planting to propagate for more trees. We’re in Dallas, and the 2021 Freeze took out our fig tree, but luckily I had one propagating inside. Now it’s as big as our original tree and somewhat taking over the yard 😊

Curious to see how it goes. Very ripe figs can exude fig honey from the bottom. There are no fig wasps in Texas, so if there were any bugs might have been something more local.
