- An attempt at a detailed overview of which magazines do and don't work in the Pioneer 5.56 Forged Trunnion Series AK.
Part 1: • Pioneer AK 5.56 Forged...
Part 2: • Pioneer AK 5.56 Forged...
Dude, that is a nice video on a specific topic. Concise and easily understood, even with a bit of humour. Thank you, Gus
I would like to say i recently got the Forged 5.56 UF, and ive tried a WBP mag in it.
The fit was tight, i had to spend a little time inserting and removing the mag to 'break it in'. The mag well shaved off slight bits of plastic untill it fit perfectly.
Great to see more data on compatibility! I'm very jealous of that Romy 556 drum 🙂
Thanks for watching! A while ago I saw your video of a similar (but better) nature for the Zastava M90; it was a big help in hunting for mags for my own M90.
They made a drum for 556 sar/wasr3 AK's?? I have weigers and Romanian mags but never heard of a drum.
Is that really a 5.56 drum??
@@tafino I own ALOT of 556 AK stuff,I mean ALOT, and never heard of it. Google,AK files, other forums, reddid, no one's ever heard of it. The Romanian pa md97 was the the only export assault rifle in 556 nato and those didn't have drums as far as anyone in America knows.
@@BNatoAk yeah, sounds like we’re in similar situations. Never heard, much less seen a 5.56 AK drum other than promag or US commercial make
As for the center rivet interference with AC unity magazines: there is an offset center rivet that can be used to create the needed space for the AC unity magazines. You also may need to lengthen the mag well towards catch so that mags aren’t being shaved. Another alternative if building the rifle is to simply move the center support rearward 2-4mm
Thank you for doing this review. I am in the process of buying one of these rifles and you have answered many of the questions I had.
Glad to hear it was useful! Thanks for watching!
@@hobofactory What selector did you use to replace the factory one?
@@brucecamparmament3728 it’s a standard AKM style, tbh not sure who made it.
@@hobofactory Thank you I just ordered a replacement
Great video. Thanks for your hard work. a lot of time and money in this video
That drum needs a video all by itself SUPER RARE I would do a lot to get one for my M90.
Polish green translucent, AC Unity and the OEM mags in mine work fine. The AC Unity are a little tight but can be modded easily .
Don't be scared to buy a bunch of the OEM mags . They are affordable, fit perfect and function flawlessly
What's the story on the Romanian drum? Is it specifically for the Sar and wasr 3's ????
Tbh I’m not even sure, it came with one of my other rifles which I picked up at a pawn shop.
@hobofactory ok thanks
Those magazines like the Galil are designed for a 7.62 receiver. For example you can build a 556 AK using Galil bolt and magazine with 7.62 bcg and 7.62 receiver and fro t trunnion as long as you match the barrel journal diameter to the trunnion.
So u think I can convert my polish 1969 akm to 556 with a galil bolt a 556 barrel and galil mags
other than filing back of feed lips, making the "swing notch" on front deeper, works well.
I bought two promag waffle style from my LGS and while they would seat it was basically impossible to charge without either having to gorilla the charging handle or literally beat it back with a mallet.
Thankyou for this video!!!
Thanks for watching!
Galil mags work fine if the spot welded plates on the sides are sanded off. They work in my m90 and wasr 3
How is the structural integrity of the Galil mag after you are done grinding away ?
@@michaelwingreen9141 you have to be very careful sanding off the spot welds. When the plates come off its like an old metal AR mag.
I use mine on my wasr 3.
@@jspec-vz3mc Thank you
I dig it
Thanks! Wasn’t sure if the experiment with an intro was worthwhile.
PUFGun work in mine, as do AC Unity
I have heard others say AC Unity works for them which does suggest my rifle might be slightly out of spec.
@@hobofactory it's not that it's out of spec but has a lot to do with the difference in mag port tolerances from AK to AK
@@michaelwingreen9141 that could be, and I’m certainly no expert on AK’s…but I’ve owned like 10 of them over the years from various countries/makers, and still have several and haven’t noticed that being a problem before with any of my others.
Does ac unity magazine possible work on hellpup
@@KsooTheRUclipsr the 5.56 hellpup? Probably yes
Hello what is the brand of the pistol grip you put on ? I am seeing alot of people wanting to change like you did.
What did you have to do to get that triangle stock to fit? I always thought the AKS-74 was the slickest looking AK. That’s definitely the closest approximation I’ve ever seen.
It actually dropped in without having to do anything beyond removing the factory stock. It’s from a manufacturer called Fat Tactical.
Besides Pioneer, I'm having difficulty locating the other magazines that were mentioned. Could you please share some links where we can find solid steel and polymer magazines? Additionally, it seems that finding a 5.56 conversion kit for AK 7.62 magazines is quite challenging lol
Unfortunately I haven’t found any steel mags that work in this rifle yet, the ones I have that run in my Zastava came from the Zastava USA site and from Apex Gun Parts. The Bulgarian 74 mags are from Gun Mag Warehouse and conversion followers are available from either Pod Arms or Dangus Leatherworks (though I’ve had better luck with the latter).
Will any of the mags that work on this work on the hellpup ak pistol
Yes all the ones that work in this work in the Hellpup. The Hellpup is just this rifle but short.
Did you happen to try any 40rd magazines?
Nope, I haven’t, unfortunately.
AC just don’t work. I had the same issue.
What is the current round count? Also, any rust noted?
Just over 1000 rounds so far. No rust that I’ve seen so far which is good considering I’ve not been cleaning/oiling after each range trip and most range outings have ended up being rainy or snowy.
@@hobofactory This is good but, not out of the woods yet?
@@spd579 I’d like to give it another thousand rounds or so. I’ve heard a couple people say that the firing pins like to break on these at around a thousand rounds.
@@hobofactory Yes. A wait-n-see detail. Thanks!
Ac unity mag didn’t work for me
Ok ..... Why would you buy an AK47 to run .556 is beyond me the only ones I seen working with out problems are that zastava M85 with the AR-15 adapter from the factory
I think for most people the motive is that they like AK’s but want the ammo availability of 5.56. I’ve had a few 5.56 AK’s that worked without issues (couple of Saiga .223’s and a Zastava M90).
I have a PSA AK556 and it takes AR mags and works flawlessly. Just bought a P.A Grom in 5.56 and will see how it works.
What was the mag I had in it last looks nice also does it work?
It’s a Bulgarian AK74 5.45 commercial mag with a 5.56 conversion follower. It does work but might require trying out a couple of different conversion followers to find the one your rifle likes.
@@hobofactory awesome I have the same Ak as this one in the video been trying to find a better looking mag
@@hobofactory yo bro I bought one for my pioneer arms Ak I’ll let you know
I noticed for my Pioneer AK that the dust cover trim curves inward toward the piston rob to much and is causing massive wear on the piston rob already(only have 200 rounds through it. Does yours have that issue? I had to get pliers and bend the dust cover outward.
I don’t think so, I’ve not noticed excessive wear in that area on my example.
Can you let me know what muzzle device you have on that? Been looking for a 74 clone muzzle break for my 5.56
Even though it’s a 74-style, it’s actually a 7.62 brake (14x1 LH thread). If I recall correctly I got it from Atlantic Firearms.
@@hobofactoryyep, Atlantic firearms sells the 74 style brake, I have I bought 2 from them and they are definitely worth the money.
Are there any metal mags that work?
@@KyleWhite-g1m not that I’ve found so far.
@@hobofactory Thanks for the info. I wonder if a steel ak-74 mag with a 5.56 converter would work 🧐
I found out once I bought one love the gun just why. My century arms can use any mags but this gun wtf why
Tbh I think part of the mag pickiness might even be quality-control related. There are some mags that work fine in mine, but others report aren’t even close to fitting for theirs, and also the other way around.
what furniture do these take and could i fit a dong?
As far as I know, it takes standard AKM handguards.
@@hobofactory do you know what franklin armory binary trigger it could fit i’m just not sure
@@sleeperzzzzs tbh I’m not super familiar with binary triggers in general, but it looks like anything compatible with a standard AKM FCG should work.
Slant brake is useless.
@@faschwank if one is left-handed like I am, it’s worse than useless and actually counterproductive, I find.
Buyer beware of Pioneer arms. I bought a pps-43c and it would not cycle at all. They tout the "famous" Radom plant in poland, what a joke. They cant even make a functioning gun after being in business over 80 years. Customer service is useless and made promises they didn't keep, now I have a 600 dollar wall hanger I cant shoot. Quality control is non existent.
You ever get it fixed?
What a loser, can’t fix your own gun? 😂
Just buy a SAM5!
