Wow, i just got done watching your build of the Academy Dragonfly, and then i found and watched your video here of the PBY5A Catalina. This is a great model and you done tge old bird justice. I also have this model on the shelf. The Cat's were unsung heros of the pacific during WWII. Pilot rescure, long range scouting, casualty evacuation. Sub hunters too. Has a friend of the family back in the San Francisco bay area who flew these aircraft as well as tge naval version of the B-24, flew through out the war as a sub-hunter, he never found a Japanese sub, but bombed a number of their surface ships, he also a dozen or more aircrews mostly along the coast of California or Hawaii. He's gone now. I was glad to have known him. Great piece of work both the model & video.
Thank you Bob that means a lot 👍 I love the Cat’s and would jump at the chance of have a trip in one. Takes a lot of courage to approach a ship that has all of its guns aimed at you. I take my hat off to those guys❤️
Working on a Wiesel 1 with 20mm autocanon now, it is an AFVclub reboxed Revell kit. It is a super pain to build, ALOT of cleanup, and loads of filling and sanding. Miss My Eduard/Tamiya/Hasegawa kits 😅
Man when I was a teen in the 90s I built one of these in 1/48 scale. Long since lost it as when life carried me elsewhere I had to throw out my old models.
Well done I have been modelling now for 2 year's now even though I am coloured blind I am getting there I have built a few diaramas I have USN PBY -5A I have done a sea scape as a sample and yes I am impressed I have the HMS Bounty 1:110 scale that I will build in the future many thanks
@TheScaleModeler your work is fantastic mate I would love to send you the work I have done in my 2 years, and being coloured blind has not impacted my results
Fantastic work. Excellent treatment of the photoetched partes. Gives more malleability to the PE parts. Thanks for this excellent video. I love this plane, it's ellegant and has the majestuosity of a swan, when splashdown on the sea.
When I saw Revell and Fantastic in the same sentence I thought don’t see that often, but it’s the Academy tooling so that makes sense lol. TBH it shows that Revell can produce kits without flash, so it must just be their moulds have it built in 😂 Nice build, and well done for preserving with that tiny PE, I tend to leave the really tiny bits off as I’m getting older!
Yes there’s is certainly a contradiction in the sentence 😂 The PE is a labour of love for sure . Revell do produce more budget friendly kits and normally there is a price to pay in the sense of losing details. Horses for courses I guess
@@TheScaleModeler I often use them as practice models for technique and then give them away to people because the investment is low enough and saves potentially ruining a more expensive kit! I just remembered - I built one of these kits in the mid-1970's! 'Bought it at the nearby K-Mart store and just glued the blue plastic parts together with that awful, gooey, toxic Testor's paint in the metal tube. "Mom... model-building always gives me a headache." "Oh, it's just the glue, honey." Good times.
Sweet memories and amazingly you’re still here to tell the tale 😉 maybe they made people a bit harder back then 😂. Thanks for commenting I hope you subscribed and liked 👍 Take it easy Tim 👍
Great model ... and from a Revell kit. a company I learned to hate many years ago when building model cars. I absolutely cannot put a 1/72 plastic model airplane together now and even the 1/48 P47 I am doing is causing me fits so congrats on working with those tiny bits and pieces too👍👍.
Yes I was shocked as well. I’m using magnifying glasses more and more now. Especially as the camera lens is better than my eyes and when I see the film it can quickly become disappointing. Thank you for feedback see you on next one 👍
Hey Scale Modeler. You just got another subscriber. I like this build as well. I like how you do your video's, I have a lot of fun just watching. Thank you Sir.
There is a PBY at the museum near me that they recovered from the interior of our state (Alaska) even being as damaged as she is due to time and weather still a gorgeous aircraft
Great video, but second the comment about the edits... i really appreciate the honesty about the issues such as the loose guns and ball bearing issues. It made me realise how stressful this wonderful hobby can be. I usually find halfway through i hate the model im working on and want nothing more to finish it so i can start another. But when it is all done all i can remember is the positive experiences 😂
Yes, seeing issues that come up or present themselves and the individual model maker’s solution(s) is great. At the end it is the enjoyment of the process and results. If you enjoy it, then other opinions do not matter, unless it is truly constructive, positive, criticism. When others express enjoyment for you, all the better. Great work, I learned from this, thanks.
Too true. Many model-related RUclipsrs seem to never have a single issue! Yeah, right. I almost never use etch brass: it makes the model twice as difficult and sometimes makes it very slightly better. This Academy model has been released under a few brands: Wolfpack released the Academy plastic and decals for either a Coastal Command Catalina that shadowed the Bismarck, or a USN machine that spotted the Japanese fleet at Midway. Hard to get the kits but cool subjects.
Excellent job! Just one minor critique is that there would be no chipping on the black de-icing boot on the leading edges of the wings, as these are made of rubber and meant to inflate to break up any icing that occurs.
Thank you mine too, not a Skyrider but I have a build video coming of the 1/72 Dragonfly A37-B by Academy which also served in Vietnam war won’t be for a while but 100% will be coming Thank you for feedback 👍
I've built this model a couple of times when it was still under the Academy brand. I really loved this kit. One version I did was the PBY from the movie "Always". There were a lot of modifications required but the end result was worth the effort. Draw Decal offers an excellent decal set of the "Fire Eaters" PBY from the movie. If you ever get a chance, I would give this version a go. You've built a beautiful model and I really enjoyed how how you produced this video. Great Job.!

For just a short time at the hobby, you do real nice work!. Only a year? Looks like more experience than that. I don't mess with static display models too much anymore. I like the larger scale R/C models. But using the knowledge I have from plastic model building, I get some great looking flying models. Like the A6M Zero / Zeke, and the F4U.
Thank you well just over a year but watched a lot of RUclips videos en route with some great modellers who have given their tips over. Like Scale-a-ton and Plasmo. Never done R/C but certainly keen on F4U’s not done any Japanese planes yet 👍
Great job on this model! Next time you're doing a sea-based diorama, consider spraying gloss varnish around where the aircraft will be splashed by water. It'll help with the realism.
The flying boat had a tail wheel and was not a true amphibian. That is beaching gear. The amphibian version had retractable nose wheel undercarriage. In Canada we made the distinction of calling one the Catalina and the other the Canso.
When you do something like the front wheel covers put little bits of flat plastic on the inside with some sticking out under the doors for door support.
nice job, i learned a few things from you with this build, thanks. i would love to know the trick with the lighter and the "detail paint' , too bad you didnt show a vid. but no worries, the build is something to be proud of, ive been building for decades, off and on, let me tell you, keep it up and i hope you post more vids, btw, WE ALL BUILD DIFFERENTLY so dont worry about who likes it and who doesnt, your not going to please everyone, if you like the final product, THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS, keep building
Hi thank you! The lighter was just burning off superglue that had set on the wire I use thisto apply CA superglue to PE parts. Not too sure what you mean re detail paint. Everyone has been really kind with a few constructive comments and tips along the way. I'm bit long in the tooth to give a monkeys nowadays 😉
Two things: I once met a woman whose husband flew Black Cats. The last Catalina i saw had the paint and wings removed and was on a flat bed trailer heading down Interstate 95. Kermet says that it wasn't his.
How are you finding your airbrush??? I have been looking into these as they are supposed to be very VERY similar to the Iwata Custom Micron. Obviously externally different but the air nozzle and needle are exactly the same system apparently built on the same production line so I’d be interested in your feedback please. You probably know the Iwata costs in access of £500+ these cost between £20-£150 and spares are a lot cheaper for yours 😅😅😅 Would also like to say how much I like your channel you show your mistakes and tell us if something is difficult with the kits so it’s very refreshing to see that 😎😎😎 not everyone is like this so we’ll done you on a great channel 🤩🤩🤩 all the very best for the future, Kenny 😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Kenny Thanks for the nice comments; it means a lot. I use my Iwata Eclipse HP-CS mostly and I lovethis one. I have a bigger needle set so I can spray varnish neat without having to dilute it. This is my go to the expensive My Hobby 771 is hardly used, as it pretty much only does the fine work. My Iwata Eclipse HP-CS is pretty bashed up nowadays, but I would buy another without hesitation. Best wishes Jim
@@TheScaleModeler yes I’ve done a lot of research into the 771’s and they are wonderful airbrushes. I’ve got two HP-CH’s .3mm nozzle and a HB-BP .2mm nozzle. I can get up close and personal with the BP with its .2 needle for figures exceptional for camouflage patterns on the clothing 😍😍😍 but the CH’s are absolutely stunning work horses tough as old boots to but I do love custom micron’s I’ll never be able to own one but the 771 is extremely close to the micron same head design and airflow system just a few changes on the outside is all the difference. But at a third of the price 😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩😎😎😎
Hi it’s explained in my other video here: Anyone could make this DIY sea diorama step by step Ocean model - and it's so easy! ruclips.net/video/j70kJqWwYZc/видео.html
You mean the clear parts I guess? That’s because if you were inside the plane looking out it would appear as a green frame on the inside ie pilot view. With this model not so important as canopies we’re closed but with canopies open you would see it - hope that is what you mean and it makes sense 👍
This might be a dumb question, but is there any prep work required to use the Pledge? Thinner or anything like that? I’ve seen others use it as well and I’ve always wanted to try it. Great build! And thx in advance for any help!
Hi there, thank you 👍first this is a good question and I had the same one infact I was pretty concerned the first time I used it. There’s so many products on the market it’s easy to feel intimidated by them. I found pledge to be better than most gloss varnish’s for models and considerably cheaper. once I have finished with painting and decals are on I tend to seal it with a coat or two of pledge. Be careful going over enamel and lacquer as the drying time of these could cause cracks as the pledge dries more quickly. Be careful of thinners as well as these can work the pledge off. I use lighter fluid with pledge and don’t have issues.
Yes straight from bottle you can also dilute with water. If airbrushing clean the airbrush out completely as it will set in the airbrush. I normally do a heavy clean every day of use anyway and rub needle down with a 1000 grit piece of wet and dry paper in order to maintain smoothness of operation- hope that helps 👍
Excellent video sir. I usually build armor because the filling in the fuselage seams are my downfall along with canopy painting. I guess I just need to dive in and get'r done.
Would have been great if this was put in a diorama involving the men from the INDIANAPOLIS in some way ! ! ! would have been fitting i think . IMO . GOOD JOB .
I thought it was as the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation was based in California same area where Santa Catalina Islands are located especially as the plane is a designated sea plane seems likely to me tbh. Fair enough if two British guys named it- good on ‘em 👍
I love you video. So it is with not disrespect intended, I must say that, the music, the chapter cards, and your voicemail makes me think I'm watching a WW2 documentary with the voice of a veteran describing the event.
Hi, A really well done and finished model. Well done. I have only one small comment and that is nothing to do with the model build. but the base. 2 things there is no wake from the back of the fuselage and also you have the plane moving through the water with static props. If you want it in water an at anchor scenario would be more realistic. Unless you could motorise the props. The engine cowlings and wings look big enough to take 2 small electric motors and the wiring would run through the aircraft and out to the base unseen. To a small battery pack with a simple on off switch. It could be hidden in the base edge. As I said a a really well done build. Your talent is clear to see.
Thank you for the reply it means a lot and your words are very kind. The electric motor isn't something that would interest me but yes you are quite right it could be adapted. Concerning the wake - the idea of the plane was it had just come to stop and was doing the last bob down in the water. I checked many actually photos and very few have the floats actually touching the water at all they seem to be more like stabilises. that said there is one small wake behind the port float as if it had lean to that side briefly before stopping. That said it was pretty much my first diorama so apology if there are things that grate on the eye.
Great work! I have heard that some rich people have bought and refurbished Catalina's and use them as flying campervans. I wish I was that rich. As far as the nose weight is concerned you can buy Tungsten shot (Heavier than lead) and cover it with resin so it wont move or rattle.
You’re more than welcome and thanks for feeding back it’s really motivating to know that at least a few people have gotten so enjoyment and tips from the videos 👍 new coming soon btw 😉
Dont go down the rabbit hole by over doing it as you get more experience...the way you weathered that plane is in my view excellent and beleivable... nice work 👍
My biggest mistake when building this kit was attaching the wing before painting. Oh, and I forgot to attach the wing struts... 😅 Lovely job you've done btw 👍
That looks incredible on the water base I actually thought it was a reference photo of the real airplane at first. Well done, really inspirational.⭐👍
Thank you that’s the biggest compliment you could give me- job done 😊👍

Wow those rivets look more like port holes ! It would have better to have filled them all in. Great plane though. Cool build.
Not sure I agree but I get where you are coming from 👍
"Лодка Каталина - отличная машина!" (с) моряки Северного флота. Вот их машину и буду тоже делать - лежит коробка. 😁
блестящий; надеюсь сборка пойдет хорошо
Two things: I once met a woman whose husband flew Black Cats. The last Catalina i saw had the paint and wings removed and was on a flat bed trailer heading down Interstate 95. Kermet says that it wasn't his.
An awesome plane nonetheless- even on a trailer!
Good work, keep it up.
Thank you Plan on doing exactly that Keith 👍
chipping on propellers would mainly be on the leading edge of each blade, seldom on the trailing edge
👍
How are you finding your airbrush??? I have been looking into these as they are supposed to be very VERY similar to the Iwata Custom Micron. Obviously externally different but the air nozzle and needle are exactly the same system apparently built on the same production line so I’d be interested in your feedback please. You probably know the Iwata costs in access of £500+ these cost between £20-£150 and spares are a lot cheaper for yours 😅😅😅
Would also like to say how much I like your channel you show your mistakes and tell us if something is difficult with the kits so it’s very refreshing to see that 😎😎😎 not everyone is like this so we’ll done you on a great channel 🤩🤩🤩 all the very best for the future, Kenny 😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👍👍
Очень круто! Хорошая работа!
спасибо - очень ценю
Postshading and chipping do BEFORE washes and dirts.
Yep I mucked up there 😉
Hello. What did You use for making water?
Hi it’s explained in my other video here: Anyone could make this DIY sea diorama step by step Ocean model - and it's so easy!
ruclips.net/video/j70kJqWwYZc/видео.html
Looks great! But I am confused why you sprayed green on the bod, just to cover it with blue?
You mean the clear parts I guess? That’s because if you were inside the plane looking out it would appear as a green frame on the inside ie pilot view. With this model not so important as canopies we’re closed but with canopies open you would see it - hope that is what you mean and it makes sense 👍
@@TheScaleModeler Ahhh that makes sense now. Thanks for answering that.
I painted the inside of the frames on my 1/72 Academy Storch. Your way would have been easier.
Hope it’s helped for future projects 👍
@@TheScaleModeler so the Pledge is straight from the bottle? I really appreciate the help! I’ll try it on the Wildcat I’m working on now!
@@TheScaleModeler right on! I do the same cleanup routine myself. I’m gonna try the Pledge in a few days. I appreciate the advice!
Why u reheat Photo etch? Some hobby magazine didn’t explain anything.
Heating helps it to bend better 👍
Bravo!
Thank you 😊
Lovely job with the build and the way you put the whole video together. Loved the background music too! Subscribed.
That is very much appreciated all round thank you 👍
So soothing to just watch along...
A la altura del standard?
Estás más allá de el!
Lol gracias pero solo soy un principiante
Très beau bravo.
Thank you 😊
也是我喜欢的飞机😍
Thank you agreed 👍 I would live a flight inside it 👍
wake with no power???
If you watch the making of the sea on the other video it addresses your observations
Watched your earlier video.....that explains it, sorry, but without the 1st vid. I got the wrong impression.......
No apology needed there I should have explained it, you weren’t the first to say that 👍 Thanks for reaching out take it easy
What a cat!
Appreciated thank you 👍
I have this plane for very long time, decades, still in box but box isn't in very good condition.
Maybe time to let it free from the box 😉👍
Excellent video sir. I usually build armor because the filling in the fuselage seams are my downfall along with canopy painting. I guess I just need to dive in and get'r done.
Thank you, and I hope you do, I build a bit of everything but I do like the planes
Outstanding
Thank you 😊
Would have been great if this was put in a diorama involving the men from the INDIANAPOLIS in some way ! ! ! would have been fitting i think . IMO .
GOOD JOB .
I agree. There's a few good possible dioramas asking to be done with the catalina's
Salut my friend super aero super video subscribe subscribe ...
Thank you for your kind words my friend they mean a lot 👍
@@TheScaleModeler thank my friend subscribe subscribe ....
Don't worry. Your work is excellent. And you have well spent your year of training.
Would like to know about the water base.
Thank you that’s very kind of you to say. There is a separate video on the water base👍
@@TheScaleModeler 🍻
Pure terapi, great job m8
Appreciate the feedback, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Superb
Thank you 🙏
Canadian flown Canso aircraft hunted and killed German U-boats. They were unpainted aluminum.
That’s very interesting thank you 👍
Did you know, it were actually some Bri'ish blokes that gave it the name "Catalina".
No I didn’t I knew it was named after the islands with the same name but was unaware of who named it - thank you 👍
@@TheScaleModeler it werent named after any islands mate.
I thought it was as the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation was based in California same area where Santa Catalina Islands are located especially as the plane is a designated sea plane seems likely to me tbh. Fair enough if two British guys named it- good on ‘em 👍
Go easy with the video edits, mate, it gets difficult to watch at times.
Appreciated feedback thank you 😊
I love you video. So it is with not disrespect intended, I must say that, the music, the chapter cards, and your voicemail makes me think I'm watching a WW2 documentary with the voice of a veteran describing the event.
😂 winning formula?
As far as the nose weight is concerned you can buy Tungsten shot (Heavier than lead) and cover it with resin so it wont move or rattle.
thank you. Would that be nice to have a Cat camper! I have took that tip on board thank you for sharing it 👍
Fascinating video 😮 I learned a lot about weathering and detailing aircraft 👍 Thanks for sharing and I am off to watch the sea base video 😎
You’re more than welcome and thanks for feeding back it’s really motivating to know that at least a few people have gotten so enjoyment and tips from the videos 👍 new coming soon btw 😉
Extremely nice and instructive video! Judy in Nova Scotia, Canada
Thanks Judy I’m glad you enjoyed it 👍 I’m in England - Jim
Dont go down the rabbit hole by over doing it as you get more experience...the way you weathered that plane is in my view excellent and beleivable... nice work 👍
Yes easily done I've mucked a few up all part of the leaning process I guess
Bugger someone else's standards. You built that and you did a splendid job
Absolutely a model is an artistic representation of the real thing - in other words my model my rules 😂 - cheers for that 👍
Magnifique réalisation ,d un des plus intriguant avions! 😉👍👍👏👏👏
Merci pour vos aimables paroles, oui c'est certainement un bel avion à mes yeux.
Great Video, Really nicely done model of the PBY Catalina, Awesome stuff.
You're very - thank you
My biggest mistake when building this kit was attaching the wing before painting. Oh, and I forgot to attach the wing struts... 😅
Lovely job you've done btw 👍
Appreciate the compliment and unfortunately that’s the way we learn I’ve done similar more than once - take it easy 👍
