My father is a trucker and going to be buying an older truck and hiring a driver to get into the business. This channel, coupled with my fathers advice, really get me to understand what my driver will have to go through when hauling loads. Really appreciate the front line info.
Thank you, in my later videos I upgraded the sound quality and that fixed the mic picking up the rattling. Drives me crazy sometimes and this video was the worst for it 😂
On the inspection thing you can go to Newberry, SC and it will count as your Mercer inspection Dowds diesel does the inspection Rick Dowd is a great guy and it's nowhere near as harsh as Louisville.
Thanks! When I have to largecar and I’m heavy it drops like everyone else but driving habits do play a big role in that. As far as idling, I’m strongly against it with a truck that has emissions 😬
Since like me you own your truck have you thought about a roof mount unit and a Honda genset to run it way cheaper than a apu or there’s always the used apu route at Joe’s in Springfield Missouri!! I need one as well but like I said I’m so close to a inframe might as well wait till after!!
Well I hauled for them years ago. The only thing I found then was the time you got payed it was a month and the DM didn't know the right oversize load . And we had to buy one . But I deducted it out of are running money. It was a hot load and we had to run team to get it there. But oversized in certain areas you had to shut down. And the permit office Guy didn't know that when they sold use the permit. And we even asked about it. And we got a ticket or warning. But back in the 90s we found them to be fare and straight with you. What I found was more of was the brokers were taking half of the cost of the load's and when that didn't work they would jack up the cost of fuel with a surcharge. And unless you had someone bank roll you must went out of business. But that's how all the computers came in to play. Us old smacks are the ones that paved the way so you younger ones don't have to pay the price of getting a roll of dime's sitting at a pay phone looking for a load. And hopefully you didn't have to Dead head to far. Because you don't get payed sitting. Do you piecework wasn't always worth it. And running against the Union made it harder. And it's not just the Union. A good Union will hire owner ops and they pay the Union dues to get the same pay. But we got flack for that. But they need to rewrite the truck law's because they suck. Nothing like being out in a flat land and your truck is govern at 56 MPR and a tornado comes up and it's running 65 to 70 MPH and your insurance doesn't pay if it was an act of God. Get my point. Your cargo insurance might but that don't pay for your truck unless you run some steal through the cab because your load came loose. Then it's driver error. Why your dodging potholes and other driver's. Man the more I think about it I would go after insurance and rewrite some of them laws. Gee for owner operator and companies.
bahaha I did the same thing this morning at 0700 in Elwood, IL.... Heat!! Good Video bro!! PS. We're going to need to get some Insider Trading rolling soon... :):)
Oh. Good video might be where to buy chains, straps etc. minimum and difference between 5/16 & 3/8. Quality circumstances why you may or may not even bother with certain sizes. Probably be multi part too. Call or email. Maybe bounce ideas. Like at Lowe's Best price anywhere for Chinese 5/16 lol. Etc etc
Lowe's has best price on the 5/16 chains. Also they come in individual bags too for keeping dry and clean and separated for storage. I like that the 20ft are the gold color and the 12ft are orange. Pick right length by visual. Lol. Plus military discount which you won't get at pilot ta loves. Grrrr
I gotta get a couple 3/8 20ft and two 12ft to take the place of the orange Lowe's I gave away. Gotta get a few Clevis hooks to swap out with the grabs when need be. And a few different size shackles too.
*Subscribed!* I’ve yet to get my CDL, but am looking far ahead regarding possible career tracks in trucking... Last night, “The Trucker’s Coach” discouraged company drivers from going owner-op due to supposedly very low current freight rates. What do you feel about this? Thanks.
Mista Butterworth welcome!! I don’t feel as the rates are low, I’m not sure where that’s coming from but rates are continuously changing. Rates can be effected simply by how many trucks are in the area so sure he’s absolutely right 100% of the time however there are so many factors involved it’s hard to really say yes or no. Rates are cyclical, they go up and down from year to year, month to month, and week to week. Maybe it is a good time to go company but I like the freedom owning gives so unless the bottom absolutely falls out, I’ll continue to o/o 👍🏻
ruclips.net/video/4O07OOZ3Av4/видео.html Check his weekly Monday videos and it’ll you give a decent idea of what freight volumes and a few rates are doing! @makecents
Really digging your videos! I feel like this is a pre-orientation to the real orientation lol. I'm almost ready to green light my switch to Mercer, your channel is a huge help. Thank you.
I loved mercer my only complain was I had my transmission go out and they wouldn't help enough to get me back on the road and I had to sell my truck even thought I was a bonded truck and military team so I had to leave I got divorced and moved so they started the ball rolling down the hill but I guess on the plus I got off the road and met my wife they was good for the 10 years I was there
They do have a separate load board for that but they are not fleet managers at all, I guarantee. Some people utilize their coordinators like that but most do not.
The easiest way to explain is never go west of 35 and basically draw a line down the Ohio Pennsylvania line all the way south and don’t go east of that. The Carolinas are hit or miss, North Georgia is really good, North Florida is OK if you get a good paying load going in. If you were going to head to the western 11, prepare to run north and south when you get there. But you’re going to make less money going out that way. I personally do not run the Northeast, it doesn’t pay very well coming out however we do have a lot of freight up there so I’m not sure about that area. I would avoid Houston as well. As far as what they haul, they have everything, lumber steel coil’s equipment installation etc. there’s not a lot of oversize freight but there is some.
That jackleg from goergia sent me here 🤣🤣 good stuff man Kidding na Sammy he is alright I used hat going on places like that to load they tell you go outside in rain to tarp idiots
I have been talking to rafeek as well . But I'm a Canadian and can't seem to find much on your freight lanes to canada he says there's freight. Do you see it on your load board?? Any help would be appreciated
Jay Mckinnon I see loads that go back to Canada however I don’t see anything coming out because I believe that’s a different load board. I’ve met a few Canadian drivers and they enjoy it but unfortunately that’s all the help I can offer
I have a couple questions, will Mercer hire you if you have a truck but no experience? And do they have certain criteria for the kind of trucks they want in the fleet, like if I bought an old Marmon would they allow me to run it if it's in good condition?
Marshall Matthews From what I know, they require one year minimum experience and the truck has to be ELD compliant so no mechanical engines. Sorry for the bad news
Ok cool that's no problem, I'll get a years experience driving a fuel tanker and the money I get from that I'll put towards a truck that's up to par, thanks.
I didn’t either however I have my inverter hooked up right behind my driver seat and I realized I was chipping away at the backside of it so I put it on the floor to keep that from happening and it’s actually comfortable now that I have adjusted. I don’t bottom out on the really hard potholes and such.

I apologize but I do not know anything about that company. As long as you’re getting over the road experience and you are making enough to make a living then that sounds like a good route to me 👍🏻👍🏻 Just try and save as much as you possibly can
I started at McElroy Truck Lines and it was the best way I could have entered the business. Their training program is the best! When I left McElroy to run my own truck, I came to Mercer. I have been flatbedding here since August 2015. You need some experience before coming to Mercer anyway.
Do you know SuperTruckerDan? I just watched a video he did that loaded the exact same items. I'm doing one year as a company driver saving everything I can and will be going to Mercer then.

Yes they basically give you a trailer that you lease to own. It’s not a bad deal but I have been gone for quite a while now and most everybody I know has left

They required one year OTR experience, recent, catch the truck had to be able to hook up to an ELD so non-mechanical, the fifth wheel height had to be a certain height but that is very standard so that’s not really that big of a deal, and I think that’s it
I like ur videos,, keep up the good work,, But 4 me Mercer treated me like a Sh!t i wanted 2 go in the flat bed but the guy wanted me 2 go in 2 van,, they tried 2 bring me in but RAFFFEEQE wanted me 2 go in 2 van,, its cool i make more $$with this different company i make about 25% more.
What I like about having my own authority. I can pull Mercer loads, landstar loads, JB hunt loads. And for the most part you can be an authorized carrier day 1. TMC another flat bed company.
lets be fair sir because im a trucker as well if you didnt talk about PAY then yes your title can and is misleading so you get people to watch 2 videos just to see the part they wanted to see. you think this is fair? sure you do. so i will make a video onmy ch with the title free money but i will make 2 videos to finally talk about it. lmao

I've pulled several loads for Mercer. I do like pulling for them. They pay in two days full pay no discounts either.
They really are a great company, I think a great Segway to my own authority someday
What I like about having my own authority. I can pull Mercer loads, landstar loads, JB hunt loads. And for the most part you can be an authorized carrier day 1. TMC another flat bed company.
Definitely, so much more opportunity. One of these days 😎

what happen to the pay? god i hate misleading and click bate youtube truckers
Wasn’t click bait, I said the video was getting long and I split it into two parts. I even made a third video with proof. Enjoy the non-click bait
Part 2

As well as the proof, the first video was too long and from a logistics standpoint it needed to be split.

lets be fair sir because im a trucker as well if you didnt talk about PAY then yes your title can and is misleading so you get people to watch 2 videos just to see the part they wanted to see. you think this is fair? sure you do. so i will make a video onmy ch with the title free money but i will make 2 videos to finally talk about it. lmao
expressing my opinion is called whining because i dont agree with you lol well said sir. lol i do videos as well with a bigger ch than you and i never mislead or misdirect sir
