    This movie never gets old. First time I watched it, I was 12, and now I’m almost 50. And to this day, I still enjoy watching it. God I miss the 80s.

    There needs to be more movies like this to inspire kids in the future. It made science and being intelligent FEEL cool when I was young. I've seen nothing like this before or after.

    "Take a step forward, take a step back. Now we're doing the cha-cha." Man, I adore this movie! When I saw Val's charisma in this and humor and wit I knew he was going to be a huge star. I also love the other song "Falling" on the soundtrack.

      It was a while back. About 10 years to be exact. According to G4, Kilmer was going to reprise his role a Knight. Set place years later, Knight is Dean of the college.

    I love Val Kilmer in this movie along with his roll as Doc holiday. Let's NOT forgot ICE MAN ( top gun). Legendary performance to stand toe to toe with Tom Cruise.
    Truly iconic.
    The soundtrack was brilliant also.

    Whatever problems anyone had in the 80s (including me, i had a lot between being teased at school and then an abusive mother at home), TODAY’S world and issues make them seem like a childhood book. Sometimes, i think if i could go back to that time knowing what i know now about how things would be, i would live through all that pain and unpleasantness again JUST to get away from the crazy world of today.

    This scene reminds me of my 2nd year in med school. 1st year was not bad, but 2nd year kicked my ass with all the pharmacology and pathophysiology we had to learn in such a short time. I literally had to stay in the library until 10 PM every single day studying. At the time I thought it was soul crushing but looking back 20 years later I miss it in some ways.

    I have a PhD in molecular biophysics and I've seen the "crackup" scene first hand. Pretty much had to talk good ol Steve off the roof. He works for the NSA now. Great movie.

      that taste as good as the real thing. Implying that Dr Hathaway (W Atherton) was unnecessarily nearvous.. 1970s/1980s decaf coffee commecials used a similar line - "Tastes just as good as the real thing"

    I saw a video about the director, Martha Coolidge. She originally declined an offer to direct real genius, because the script was just another dumb frat boy movie. Given freedom to change it, she went to cal-tech , i believe and interviewed A bunch of students, to find out what really went on there. Years later , At a showing of RG, real scientists said they chose their careers because of this movie. There are some videos on YT about the popcorn finale. It took months to pop all that popcorn. Nerds are cool, Hmm, who knew?

      Jordan and Ick were two very underrated characters. It's scary to think that between four students (and occasionally Kent) there was enough brainpower in one room to defeat every military on the planet if they so wished. And yet, they didn't. Thus the movie. :)

      @@xealit , the best military laser is about 100 kilowatt. It's been estimated that a 1 MW laser turns air into plasma and explodes. As of 2020 there is no solution to the limit.
      If Chris and Mitch had hired a 4 MW laser in that lab the very air would have turned into high energy plasma with the resulting explosion demolishing the building.

    It's 2020 and there is still no operation long duration 1 megawatt military laser. The best they have is about 1/10th of that.

    maybe Martha Coolidge will be reincarnated into the multiverse where Hollywood successfully utilized William Atherton into more leading nonantihero roles after The Sugarland Express? who knows? I mean how sophisticated does a "universe bought off a shelf" really get?

      Real Genius was on OTA TV in s hospital, as I came out of a 3-4 day induced coma after freaking brain surgery.
      I was laughing so hard, a doctor came in to check that I was okay. He laughed when he saw what I was laughing about.
