In simple variant: this artefact could be magical stuff and speaks: It bring lucky or something good for carrier
In southern magical tradition very poplar make amulets with names of lord/gods/demons and sigils, or digits etc
I think its all very old tradition: use magic words, symbols til early times when human become thinkable

Hi Arith! Thankyou so much for your content, it’s thoughtful, thought provoking and wonderfully presented.
A thought struck me about the bracteate invoking Freyr. I’m thinking about Fimbulwinter and Ragnarok, less as ‘just a story’ and more as history… In the early 6th century CE, the archeological record may show a societal collapse across Scandinavia, with as much as half of the population dying…not everywhere being affected in the same way though. This may correlate to three volcanic eruptions on the other side of the world, the one in 536/7 CE being the second largest that we know of. The theory is that this creates a huge ash cloud, leading to the darkening of the sun (and moon) for a period of three years followed by crop failure and livestock death. Scarce food resources would quickly lead to conflict for what remained. I understand that the average temperature drop was around 3 degrees. This sounds very much like Fimbulwinter. I also understand that this darkening of sun and moon and crop failure is also referenced in the Finnish Kalevala.
Returning to the bracteate. Is it possible it was made to be a sacrificial object? It is of precious metal (valuable in itself as well as rare), in what might be thought of as the shape of a sun symbol, calling upon a powerful god of fertility. Could it be a plea to Freyr to bring back the sun and fertility (and life) to the land?
I’ve compressed my thoughts somewhat so as not to ramble, but I wonder what you think?
All the best from here in Wolverhampton!

I do agree, there have been several Fimbulwinter, many of which had a global effect, such as the darkening of the skies by volcanic activity leading to a considerable drop of temperatures. There was indeed a great climate change in the 6th century, which is one of the many reasons that led Scandinavians to flee, especially from Norway where it is more mountainous. The 6th century event could have been the basis for the creation of the Ragnarök myth, especially the Fimbulwinter part, although such a myth has several influences from an Icelandic perspective, which also deals with a lot of cold and volcanic activity. New archaeological evidences show that one great factor for Icelandic colonizers to leave Vinland so abruptly was also a great climate change, leading to a considerable drop in temperatures and impossible to remain there, and impossible to farm. Since it was in the early 11th century, it may have contributed, in part, to the elaboration of the Fimbulwinter myth, or at least adding some elements to it. Many evidences point to a real event that traumatized Northern populations. When dealing with Folklore (of any place) the great majority of folk-tales and folkloric creatures are the reflection of real traumatic events. Take the example of the Nykr (Nøkken; Näck; Nixe, etc.) which reflects several social-economic changes that have had a great impact on the collective mentalities of the populations that have such a being in their folklore, and it also reflects the fear of drawning, especially of unsupervised children, which causes trauma to the parents. Trauma has built a lot of folklore and myths. Certainly, in time of great strife, certain deities and other entities become far more important in the fight against the elements that prevent living beings from thriving. Just as people would give offerings, sacrifices and make prayers, poems and songs to keep themselves away from the harmful intentions of the Nykr, they would to the same towards the powers that could protect them from harm (gods, ancestors and land-spirits).

Maybe Jackson thinks that when Christians combine the X (chi) and p (rho) into almost a bind rune they are just abbreviating or A (alpha) O(omega) just practicing letters? Cheers from Mercia

Love listening to you talk about the Runes. It's so easy to tell it is your passion. I had no idea what Animsim was and I'm still surprised I arrived at that belief on my own and only learned what it was called after. 😂 I love learning about our ancestors and their beliefs.

"Laukar" is still near, to the german word "lauschen". An older word for "listen to something".
And yeah, there was much controverse after Jacksons video, but it was funny...😅

Great work Arith, thank you! I came across this 3x repetative depiction of certain runes on another channel where it was also interpreted with a magical intent, it certainly makes sense and repetition has always been a means to reach our goals. I know this as a guitar player too😂 I had similiar ideas stated from another viewer here on how the different climate changes and other weather and Global phenomena have influenced the content of Ragnarök, I definately see connections here. I hope your own work abroad has been successful, looking forward again to next Wednesday❤

I always enjoy watching your videos. Great channel! Thank you Arith, for the interesting and painstaking work aimed at enlightenment!
But I want to fix it up a bit.
auja and auwija have different meanings.
auwija - meaning well-being, prosperity, good - everything that can satisfy the needs of people, be beneficial (both material and spiritual).
auja - meaning luck in its purest form, a stream of constant luck in everything. It's like the Felix Felicis potion in JK Rowling's Harry Potter. :)
auja - is one of the frequently used runescripts (spells) in Gáldr.

Oh Alawin has a french counterpart, in the cathedral of Chartres, which city was the center of the quadrivium teachings, there was many druids and ''hallouines'' (women kind of druids or healers) hallouin is written dif_rently BUT is pronounced the same as Alawin!

Another informative video! And what an awesome collection of books. You wouldn't happen to have a book list laying about somewhere already uploaded? Just a wee one? :D I've managed to find some of these books on the E-library. And then there is, almost the best, I thought I was one of the only ones left, that had my WoW still standing on shelves in my living room, no less :D

@Arith Härger Thought You might enjoy this story of mine. I've loved RUNES since learning them around 8th grade. They have most definitely worked Majic in My Life especially helping me ACE exams in my high school years. After seeing "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", I learned how to cheat on my tests. However, as with most things I do, I put my own spin on the movie's method: I would translate the test's answers into RUNES & write them on my thigh or on the inside of my arm. The answers written were as clear as day to Me, but not one teacher ever suspected anything! The True Majic happened when I began to realize that in translating & inking answers onto my flesh, I was in fact Memorizing the test materials! In The End I was LEARNING & RARELY had to look upon My Runic cheat~sheets!!! 😉🤙💜🖤💫

Thought you would talk about charms like for example the charm on Ribe hjerneskal (from around the year 725, Denmark) the Sigtuna plate (amulet, from the viking age, Sweden), the Högstena charm (runic plate from the early 12th century, Sweden), the Cantebury charm (Old norse charm found in an anglo saxon manuscript from the year 1073) and the charm on the Kvinneby plate (from the viking age, Sweden). But no you didn't, but perhaps you will? 🙏
