Candle Magick is one of my favorites too. I love working with 7 day candles. Dress them with appropriate oil, draw and write on the glass cylinder telling/showing the Magick what you want. Empower it and light it. Place it in a safe place and let the Magick happen!!
You should write a book! Maybe a comprehensive guide to candle magick or something of the sort. You have so much knowledge beyond candle magick though, so you could cover more areas ☀
I didn't realize there was such a difference between North America and Europe candle magic, but every thing you explained was so on point. I am from Kentucky, USA. I would have to agree with you on witches here read how it burned to divine if the spell was successful or if you may need to redo the spell. Thank you for your videos!
I agree my people come from the Ozark Mountains and while I have heard people sometimes complain that here in the states we are stealing their ways and that the states don't have their own real witches, they haven't bothered to learn. Many that came and settled here were not chrisitian and fled here because of that reason. Most never caused or even thought of causing harm to anyone from the Native American Nations. These were often people that were very connected to the land but now needed to learn to connect to the land here. They were taught a lot from the Native Americans and at times they taught them some of there ways, but most importantly they learned about the land and all that the land here gives, so much changed from how they used to be. A lot of people have forgotten this, but it seems in many places especially among the mountain folks everywhere that they not only learned but over time even changed how they did their workings. I was taught a lot by my great great aunt, who still mostly followed the old ways taught to her. So don't let anyone tell you that you stole their beliefs and ways. These days there may be a lot of cross over but we have become our on kind of being.
Phenomenal video! ❤️ I feel a bit silly admitting this but I had been wondering (and now know why) my money spells worked for such a short time. Turns out its because I keep stopping the energy part way by snuffing out the candle and just leaving it until my next attempt 😳 Well, I guess I'm off to finish the spell in full now lol Thanks, Hearth!
Thanks Hearth. Before this video, I had never heard of elemental candle magic. I just took two whole pages of notes that I’ll use to make a grimoire entry. I doubt you’ll see this comment because I’m so late to watching this, but I would love a video going more in depth into elemental candle magic because it is so hard to come by on the internet. I really appreciate all your super educational videos, I feel like I’m wasting my time if I’m not taking notes because there is so much information in them!
With representational magick, for example a candle to bring peace to the home, what you can do with the remains is too re-melt it and add it to another peace to the home candle thereby continuing on that intention, constantly burning peace of the home candle using the energy of the previous candle into the new one. One thing I like to do is something I call the infinity flame. So when my representational candle is almost at the point where the flame would snuff out, I depending on the intention of the working, so lets use the peace to the home example, I would have another peace to the home candle charged and ready to go and would light it using the same flame of the original candle. Once the original candle has snuffed itself out, I still have its energy and added new energy with the same intention going on in the second candle. You can then scrape out any left over wax from the originally candle and add it bit by bit to the secondary candle to continue the build up of energy.
Thanks for this very informational video. I'm Mexican and representation magick with candles is almost always the norm, you can even find the seven day candles which are called "veladoras" here in any supermarket.
@@PanickedPluto it was probably an altar to her ancestors, very common in Mexican households if I'm not mistaken. I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with witchcraft tho, unless his mom was actually a witch.
Hey Harth, Please share your beauty spells. You look 17 years old. I couldn’t believe you were practicing magic for so many years. I want to look younger since a stressful and traumatic life aged me pretty quickly. Loads of Love for the phenomenal person you are. I love your videos.
Enjoyed this video, first one of yours I've watched. Us old British witches call representational magick sympathetic magick. That's what you'll see it called in books. Just thought I'd mention it just in case people are confused about it.
I believe it’s a lot to do with how you feel about the spellwork If you don’t feel right throwing the remains of a candle away for your spell, then don’t But as you say, you have put all your intention into that so it is an extension of your intention, but if throwing it away feels right for what you’re trying to do I believe it just adds more
Great video! I guess I mix the two styles a bit. I do try to choose a candle color/smell/etc. based on my working, but I still use candles when I want to work specifically with the element of fire, and I channel energy into the flame rather than the candle. I also don’t let my spell candles burn completely down, which is unlike other North American traditional candle magicks. I think I might do a VR to this because I think it’s an interesting topic. 🥰
That’s how I do it actually. It’s practical to reuse and channeling into the flame makes more sense to me, because the wax is being destroyed as the wick burns, the wax just allows the flame to prolong itself But I like picking type of candle because to me it helps incentivize what I’m trying to do, really nail in that intention, focus it, but it’s not about what it represents, that’s just for me
This is the best candle magic explanation video I’ve seen so far. Your videos are the most informative about how the craft is done. People like edit their videos to be short sweet and fun but I appreciate that you take the time to sit down and thoroughly explain everything. So thank you!
This is a fantastic find. Candle magic is quite possibly my favorite type and I practice at least a little each day. I looked through a couple different books but wasn't aware that there were different styles across the pond! I found that I'd already incorporated many of my favorite attributes from each style and I'm still always getting creative with it. I follow the cycles of the moon, planets and energies. For instance if you are doing a banishing or wanting to move certain things away from you, do the spell during the waning moon until dark, or during a mercury retrograde.
Your explanation of the euro way of doing candle magick is seriously really helpful. I am new to trying this, so I followed a spell from a "for beginners" book that said to dress a big ass pillar candle but then it said to chant for 10 minutes, so I did. In the process, it really did feel like dressing the candle was unnecessary because the power was in the interaction with the flame and the chanting like how you describe in this video. The spell never even said to come back to it the next day to finish, or to wait for it to burn out, either, so it left me a bit confused. So...I think that whoever wrote that spell didn't realize what you are sharing here, esp since such a big ass candle was to be used, haha! They must have gotten it from an older Wicca basics spell and then tried to modernize it. Anyway, your take on this just makes so much sense, so thank you very much!!
Thank you so much im getting into candle magic and this is so helpful and informative. I knew nothing about elemental candle magic from Europe. Thank you for helping my practice evolve. All your videos have been so informative.
It is not common in European magick to reuse a candle for another purpose but it is common to reuse them for similar workings. Many prefer to burn candles down unless it is for the same working. I reuse the candles I use for daily devotional rituals, but if I need a candle to burn down quickly I use a birthday candle for a short spell as the size of the candle do not really matter only the flame. European magick use allot of representational magick but not so much in the candles used.
I love learning from you so much! I've been following you probably just as long as i've been actively practicing and I never get tired of your videos! ♥
As an American witch that's been practicing candle magic since the late 90's- I honestly think that north American candle magic was born through the simplicity that 7 day jar candles are VERY easy to find in most every grocery stores in the US because they are Mexican religious candles used in their own catholic rituals. We would choose them because they have always cost $1 and you can get clear glass without saints on them and they would come in different color options for different magic. They were also so easy to write on with sharpies and collage onto with a glue stick. I really do think this was born out of necessity- I only started to see them being made and sold as witchy candles at Witchcraft stores in the mid aughts. Personally, I do not use these candles anymore as they are terrible for your health. I only use beeswax (pricier yes, but worth it).
*Thank you* for that fantastic dissertation! You have cleared loads of things up for me and even answered questions I didn’t even know I had! Love this. BB
Thanks for this excellent explanation of the 2 different kinds. I understand it better while I wait on the arrival of my book, "Before You Cast A Spell." Yes, I'm listening to your advice!
Because of how practical it is to me to only watch the flame and the fact that I use birthday candles for my practice, I prefer the European style for now. It helps me a lot to keep my practice secret, still I hope to try the North American style one day.
I guess I combine the two...I focus on flame using a dressed candle to assist the element...hmmm...the entire candle from top to bottom is used. I believe in the blending of the two. I absolutely dont agree with blowing out a candle either 💫
Weirdly enough I tend to use candles for both their representative purpose and the flame as fire tends to bring about change quickly, but the represention attracts what the candle represents. I didn't know, however, one was more European and the other more North American. I swear I always walk away with something new from your videos.
What a substantial and comprehensive video! Thank you so much for this. You should really write a book. I'm certain a lot of people would agree and purchase! Warmth and light from the Philippines.
It sounds like using elemental candle magic can be useful for beginners working on utilizing energy. Representational sounds like something you do once you can center, ground, and give energy comfortably. That’s just how I ( a baby witch) see it (:
Are you ever going to do one on wax reading, or did I miss that one? Like tears, etc. maybe I did miss it, p,ease direct me to the video if I did. Thanks! Love your videos
I have normally only heard of traditional and ceremonial uses for candles in magical practices which can widely vary from each other and even amongst themselves traditional practices can be very regionalised to the area or even town of which they originate and ceremonial practices to name only two solomonic and the traditional inspired wiccan practices very quite a lot within themselves even if they have for obvious reason quite a few similarities so I would place candle magic only in context with the traditions that it comes from and I personally make points of we're and what sources it comes from in my own notes
I am from Europe and I do a mix of both. I take the colors into account but not the size/type of candle and I sometimes engrave the candles with initials or sigils. I also dress them with herbs and/or spices depending on my intentions But I also reuse candles. I can't keep buying new ones so I reuse them but I cleanse them if they're gonna be used for a different ritual. I also chant and also burn intentions and place them at the bottom of the candle and evaluate the flames.
Thanks! My favorite type of magic is simple: take a chime/taper candle (color to match intention/purpose); place it on a plate; dress it with oils and/or herbs that match my purpose; light the candle with intention; let the candle burn all the way down/out. Is that representational? What "kind" of witch would that be? (I know the type or label doesn't REALLY matter, but I'd still like to hear your thoughts. Fire witch?) Thanks!!
I work with my dieties elementally I foundy deities thanks to the elements Hekate for fire Pan for earth Poseidon for Water and Athena for air it's been really great using this kind of system.
I use a white candle for just about everything and cleanse before each use. But if it's a holiday I'll generally make a special one. Or if it's a very specific spell that I need to really hold
Thank u Hearth! This is a great video and not often discussed. What I am curious to learn more about is how practitioners who utilise both forms of candle magick can go about shifting their perspective and intentions as and when to match the traditions of these two very different crafts when required? Or perhaps should a person choose a general form they usually use and stick to it? Also, I'd love to hear more about this in relation to your workings when you do undertake them or any previous experiences youd be happy to talk about. I ask mostly because as a mum of two I'm do sometimes have to pause the burning of a candle if I can't watch it. I work daily with elemental candle magick in an informal way - for grounding, meditation, journalling, tarot and the like (I tend to use organic nontoxic tealights for this with an oil burner) but I also do like to use representational magick on occasion in a more planned out way, for which I have used a number of different types of candles. I do feel like colour as a correspondence is definitely something that is now much more important in elemental magicks than it once was. I can think of a number of occasions when I have actually utilised a blend of the two concepts in one working (in terms of for instance choosing a specific colour and working with the element of fire to bring passion or speed for example, whilst also carving intentions, annointing it and burning it all the way down) which also brings up a number of questions - such as is it right? Appropriate? And even is it ethical? It's a hot potato that I kind of wish I hadn't raised now 😂 but if I had to ask anyone I'd definitely ask u! Thanks for the great video xx
Very interesting video! However, at first I was very confused. I am from Germany and have practiced for about 18 years and have never heard of this European candle magic form. I knew only the North American form until this video.
I've been seeing your videos recently and you are a very good communicator. You would be a great teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Greetings from Portugal.
Your videos are amazing and really helpful... you've helped me understand alot of things and correct certain misconceptions over time.. but please if I may, can you kindly do a video on ancestral magick and how to align with your ancestors
Thank you so much for the way you explain everything when you are giving us some of your knowledge of magic. You answerd my questions before I asked🤣❤❤
Not blowing out the candle has to do with respect to salamanders (fire elemental spirits) so definitely DON'T blow out a candle when you are working with the element! Use a snuffer.
Actually at first I couldnt differentiate wicca witchcraft and pagan so I didnt like the idea of pagan wicca witchcraft work. Now I can differentiate I really feel more drawn to witchcraft because it shows me différent ways I can use thé skills I got from ceremonial magic. I think It's important to have many ways rather than working with one tradition

Outstanding information ! Thank you!!
Very interesting video!
However, at first I was very confused. I am from Germany and have practiced for about 18 years and have never heard of this European candle magic form. I knew only the North American form until this video.
I prefer to use elemental magic with intention with a bit of personnalisation/representation. I am from QC, Canada ☺️💜✨
Very helpful! Thank you! ❤
Am amazing video never knew about the two different types I'm just getting started with witchcraft so this was really good to know

Excellent breakdown. I had no idea of european workings
Amazing video!! Thank you!!
Not blowing out the candle has to do with respect to salamanders (fire elemental spirits) so definitely DON'T blow out a candle when you are working with the element! Use a snuffer.
So much information. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge 💖
I do a hybrid of the two - I didn't know that till now lol. I'm not new to magic - just new to "studying" it.
