So, just a little backstory behind this. I saw that the KSP devs posted their ISS anniversary challenge thing last week and I was intending to do something for it... But of course, I forgot about it until I saw Matt Lowne's ISS station. So, I decided to see if I could push myself to make an ambitious video in 2 days to get this out on the 20th anniversary of continuous ISS habitation. To do that, I stayed up for a continuous 40 hours, working on this almost non stop over the weekend. I'll say, this was an interesting experience, but not something I'd ever look to repeat. I hope you enjoy this odd piece of content!
I wish there were some larger solar panels in the game. I couldn't quite get the proportions of the solar panel/radiators right or else the part count would be way too high. There's like 600-800 parts in just the solar panels already!
Me, seeing the completely disproportionate fairing: "oh cool he's making it single launch" *Launch 1: Station core* WHAT NO STRATZ PLEASE NO THINK OF THE FPS
To be fair I have also used fleas as sepatrons, when I built a single launch artificial gravity duna station that needed two saturn V sized boosters on either side of the darn thing to get into lko
Fun fact : recently, a French youtuber I'm following (the great Yann Solo from 12 Parsecs) made an educational video about the ISS. And in the middle of it, he said something like "For those who don't know, the ISS wasn't sent in space just like that. Hell, just try in KSP, if you manage to build this bad boy on the ground, launch it and put it into orbit IN ONE PIECE, I'll invite you in my living room to have a drink and make a video with me!" Of course, I tried. And failed. I've been trying to single-launch-to-orbit this station _for weeks_ , struggling with awful frame-rates... and now Stratz shows up and gracefully puts a five-thousand-ton beast of an ISS into orbit, in beautiful butter-smooth footage. I feel personally attacked lmao
Thanks! Single launching stations is indeed a big challenge, but there are techniques to make it easier. The big one I used for this station was the heaviest auto-struts: with this auto-strut type, you can place a few heavy fuel tanks in symmetry and then all these autostruts will link to them, making a very sturdy connection... Hopefully that makes sense. Also, if you want help with it, feel free to join my discord server and ask: discord.gg/DWXyA2C . I'm more than happy to help if you have questions. I'm sure you could make your station work. Keep at it and maybe ask some questions if you get stuck and you'll get it in no time!
@@Stratzenblitz75 Thanks for the advice ! I've heard of autostrut quite often, but never knew exactly what it was. And I'm definitely joining the discord !
My initial thought was "oh he's launching the ISS in one rocket, Matt Lowne already did this". This is what I thought up until I saw the "Station Core" text, then I really knew what was going on. Well done sir.
Thank you! I wanted to launch it single launch since that approach is typically easier, but I couldn't since it was simply too bulky. Docking is not fun... Just docking all the pieces took the most time out of the building phase.
God that's the size of rocket I use to take large bases to EELOO. The fact that you use this to get to kerbin orbit shows just how insane the size of that station is!
I say the same thing about KSP that I do about Skyrim: Thank God for the modders and the content creators, because without them the studio would have let this thing die years ago.
Autosruts! The 5m tanks are one of the best tanks for autostrutting in the game since they are so heavy. By setting it up so the 5m tanks are the heaviest on the station, all the heaviest autostruts will link to them and make a very sturdy connection.
To everyone saying stratzenblitz’s ISS is better than Matt’s: I’d say that they both are good and impressive. Either way, I think that both of them did a fantastic job and are truly amazing KSP players
In all honesty, I did not make this compete with Matt Lowne. I wanted to do something cool for the ISS spaceflight 20th anniversary and thought this was fitting for the channel. I only based this loosely on the ISS; its inspired by the shape, but details are not the same.
