So, just a little backstory behind this. I saw that the KSP devs posted their ISS anniversary challenge thing last week and I was intending to do something for it... But of course, I forgot about it until I saw Matt Lowne's ISS station.
So, I decided to see if I could push myself to make an ambitious video in 2 days to get this out on the 20th anniversary of continuous ISS habitation.
To do that, I stayed up for a continuous 40 hours, working on this almost non stop over the weekend.
I'll say, this was an interesting experience, but not something I'd ever look to repeat.
I hope you enjoy this odd piece of content!

Fun fact : recently, a French youtuber I'm following (the great Yann Solo from 12 Parsecs) made an educational video about the ISS. And in the middle of it, he said something like "For those who don't know, the ISS wasn't sent in space just like that. Hell, just try in KSP, if you manage to build this bad boy on the ground, launch it and put it into orbit IN ONE PIECE, I'll invite you in my living room to have a drink and make a video with me!"
Of course, I tried. And failed. I've been trying to single-launch-to-orbit this station _for weeks_ , struggling with awful frame-rates... and now Stratz shows up and gracefully puts a five-thousand-ton beast of an ISS into orbit, in beautiful butter-smooth footage.
    I feel personally attacked lmao

    • @mikesleftarm84

Matt Lowne's was single launch to orbit.

    • @Stratzenblitz75
      @Stratzenblitz75  3 года назад +26

      Thanks!
Single launching stations is indeed a big challenge, but there are techniques to make it easier. The big one I used for this station was the heaviest auto-struts: with this auto-strut type, you can place a few heavy fuel tanks in symmetry and then all these autostruts will link to them, making a very sturdy connection... Hopefully that makes sense.
Also, if you want help with it, feel free to join my discord server and ask: discord.gg/DWXyA2C . I'm more than happy to help if you have questions.
I'm sure you could make your station work. Keep at it and maybe ask some questions if you get stuck and you'll get it in no time!

    • @TKFeather

That's a very good question, and one I can actually answer since I did it in mostly one sitting.
So, I started work on the station at 10-11 pm on Saturday, and then worked until 10-11 pm on Sunday to finish it. So, the station itself took ~24 hours to design and assemble in orbit. After I did that, I took a 1-2 hour break and then worked on the video. I'd say that I started at 12 pm and worked until 9 am, so 9 hours for video.

Stratz, ik you probably won’t reply back but.... how long did it take you to assemble the station?

    • @Stratzenblitz75

It took about 24 hours to design and assemble it in orbit

How in gods name did you make that out of ONLY 1500 parts!!!

Real ISS is about 420 tons. So yeah, this is a step up from that. Not sure what the part count is though.

The fairing reminds me of Doug Dimmadome’s hat. Does this make these rockets Doug Dimmadome’s Dimmarockets?

God that's the size of rocket I use to take large bases to EELOO. The fact that you use this to get to kerbin orbit shows just how insane the size of that station is!

You should try and fit the ISS into one rocket and then make it fold out in space. That would be cool

By having mods it's possible to add a solar array to a solar panel so it always faces the sun then turn off the solar arrays solar panels turning ability

Looking at the final product, it seems at first absurdly titanic, a gargantuan space hulk that could never be built in real life.
    And yet.... That final mass....
It's not actually that unreasonable. Just 13x the mass of the ISS.
All we'd need is 55 Starship launches. For comparison, 36 shuttle missions were flown to assemble the ISS, nevermind the substantial contributions of Russia and others.
Starship, at a target launch cost of $2 million per flight, could fly all 55 of those launches for less than the cost of a single Space Shuttle launch.
Even if SpaceX gets nowhere near that target pricepoint, Starship could build a titanic station like this for far less than it cost to build the ISS.

The fact that we can even consider this just shows how SpaceX has truly revolutionized spaceflight. Very excited for the future!
