Nan Bield Pass: A classic Lake District MTB route

- Back up in the Lakes again for this one, with my mate Pete, to ride yet another classic trail, the Nan Bield Pass.
This one is quite different in nature to Garburn as it starts off with a series of Alpine-like switchbacks followed by rocky singletrack that goes on for long enough to warrant a rest halfway down.
Before you get to the Pass though, there are three other descents and (obviously) some big climbs but as I am sure you can imagine, there's not much of the climbing included in this edit as it's boring.
I love Nan Bield although not everyone does. A quick search on SingletrackWorld and you'll find people moaning about it, mainly people who got all phased by the switchbacks and didn't get on with the following singletrack either (although they obviously don't admit to it).
Awesome video jason, anyone who films with a gopro will have a fair idea how technical that is, it still looked quite mad to be honest, great humour throughout, i assume pete is happy being called a dirty man with small hands and size 3 feet ? 😂, quality mate 👍
Cheers mate. Pete is used to such things by now, he’s had to put up with me for many years 😂
Did the Harter Fell and Nan Bield descents yesterday on my steel hardtail. Insanely good - easily the most techy stuff I’ve ridden, and the top section is really exposed. What a buzz!
Harter Fell is a bit special isn’t it, feels like some kind of bizarre trials in places. It also makes Nan Bield seem like a walk in the park, which it isn’t (still gutted they have sanitised the roll-in not long after the switchbacks).
Glad you enjoyed it mate, I love this loop 👍
@@Stopadoodledoo it’s crazy how hard you have to concentrate on Harter to not smash your brains in. Did it clippped in too (perhaps not the best idea, but hey, I’m typing this, so still in one piece). Time to invest in a full susser again methinks!
@@stephenmarshall6004 it’s funny really that I wouldn’t dream of wearing a full face helmet for a ride like this where, at least for the Harter Fell descent, I can’t think of anywhere that justifies one as much.
It’s definitely easier on a full susser; I managed to ride all of it on my Orange (albeit a bit piecemeal as I was with a group so waiting for them); quite surprised by how much I managed to ride on the hardtail really - it was only after doing it on my Orange that I went back and watched this one, I had convinced myself that I had done much less.
I would need to be a lot more comfortable with spuds to even contemplate riding it with them. Saying that, I have a mate who would dread doing it with flats as he is so used to spuds that anything else feels alien and lacking control for him.
@@Stopadoodledoo totally agree with your comment about LOVING these trails. Just a quick comment… as you get to the tarmac section on the arse end of the Nan Bield section is a farm, populated by a farmer who’s a proper mardy twat . 2 of us said hi. Twice. That’s 4 greetings in total. Zero response. I’d have been happier with a properly direct “fuckoffdickhead”. Didn’t even acknowledge we were there. Maybe I’m just a twat myself for saying ‘ello
Thought for the day, just like Radio 4 but without the sanctimonious bullshit. 😁
Thankyou for making this video. Superb skills gents 👊🏽
Thanks mate, it was a fun one to film.👍
Nice riding bud. You were flying over them rocky sections. Looks like a cool place to ride.
Cheers mate and yeah, it's a great place to ride. The Lakes never disappoints (unless you end up riding the North Face trail in Grizedale by accident) 👍😃
I am enjoying your content, particularly your rants.
Thanks. I assume by your name that you're another Chester resident?
Yeah certainly am.
That makes three of us then (can't remember what Adrian's called on here). At this rate, we'll be able to organise a Chester 'group' ride at some point 😃👍
Cool, sounds good to me
Hey bud. Just watched your video at the DH tracks in Llangollen. If fancy that ‘Chester group ride’ then drop me an email at mikestevenson37@msn.com @stopadooledoo
im smashing through your content recently
Thanks mate, hope you are enjoying it 👍
Wow! That just looked crazy, your skill level is brilliant, they were rock fields not gardens 👍🏼
I had sort of forgotten what Harter Fell was like. The two times I rode Nan Bield last year, we climbed up High Street and then down Mardale Ill Bell to get to the pass and whilst Ill Bell is techy, it’s not in the same league as Harter. Still think cutting over Harter Fell is a better option than descending Gatescarth and scrambling up the back of Nan Bield though 👍
We did this ride about a year ago, I did it on a fat bike 😳 my first proper ride in the lakes , great video but as you say it doesn’t give you how steep or techs them switchbacks are.👍
I think a lot of people underestimate Nan Bield, thinking it’s a bridleway, how hard can it be? It’s nowhere near the most techy trail up there but it’s far from easy, especially Harter Fell 👍
Yeah man just honing my skills local..then hope to pick it up a notch..if my 53 year old body n cheapo claud butler or buttlick as I call it can cope 😃😃😃
Awesome 👏 ride . That single track at the end looked really nice 👍
It’s awesome mate, pretty big ride to get to it but totally worth it 😀
Great riding off Harter Fell. Just how bad is it to Nan Bield if you stick to the bridleways?
Thanks mate. Bridleway only, I'm not keen at all. The descent down Gatescarth to Haweswater is a wide, loose byway with strange corners that feel like they are off camber somehow; it's just not worth the effort of the huge climb up from Sadgill. Then, the climb up the back of Nan Bield is one nasty carry.
Both other ways in, via either Harter or up High Street from Troutbeck and over Mardale Ill Bell, are way nicer. Yeah, it's footpath over both but I've done both on many occasions and never had any conflict at all.
Harter is way more technical than Mardale, there's some bits which are just bonkers - if you messed up then it would be Ouch o'Clock for sure. Still, there's quite a lot of the descent that is rideable (still pretty techy) and the climb up onto it from the top of Gatescarth isn't that nasty really. You could probably ride most of it if you were fit enough, Christian rode all of it on his eBike.
Looks a sweet place to do some mountain biking
It’s awesome mate, such a great trail. Even the other two descents I moan about are pretty good, all things considered 👍
@@Stopadoodledoo hello, do you have a link to a GPX file please?
Hi, I’m on Strava as Jason Thomas (live in Chester) if that helps 👍
Cracking vid and I have subscribed yer fcuker !.....keep em coming, far far better than the sterile stuff
Cheers Phil. When there’s so many good trails out there to ride, I have no intention of giving up. Glad someone appreciates my Subscribe message; most of them are so cheesy that I had to do something a bit different 😀. Whether it works is a different matter!
Just like Walna Scar 😜.... Quality as per.
It’s in the same county I suppose 😂. Walna used to be great but it’s just not worth the effort now. Saying that, the way out from Torver to Seathwaite is great, it’s just the main descent back to Coniston that is poo poo
@@Stopadoodledoo when I dud it I came from the ruined building on the other side up to the Cross roads at the top then did Walna up to just after the pinch point..... Then turned off past the quarry to Torver. I enjoyed it but the Nan Beld pass looks a notch or three up in terms of tech.
There used to be a couple of really challenging sections on it before they turned it into a Sustrans path. Such a shame
Some serious sheep anger, only ever walked over harter but thought it looked pretty techy, well ridden 👍.
Cheers mate. The sheep thing is a bit of a running 'joke' since the Escaping Llandegla video as they have got in the way in almost every video since; even at Hopton Woods (although only in front of the car on the track to the car park). Yeah, Harter is a tough one but fun in a 'Why do I risk injury?' kind of way 😃
Im just here for the commentary, bikings not bad either....'Quote of the day'.....Go have a Tunnocks tea cake & a wank....Genius :oD Thats supposed to be a laughing face emoji thingy but me emoji thingies are knackered.
Thanks Steve, I'm hoping for sponsorship from Tunnocks so fingers crossed this one swings it for me 😂
@@Stopadoodledoo If you get any Tunnocks style riding tops or maybe a tea cosy to keep my coffee warm (I hate tea) put my name down :) Preferably in matte black & matte silver to match my bike so I look like a proper mountain biker :D
I could smash a Tunnocks teacake!
I could do with a wank 😂
Edit: That's not a request 😃
