He is absolutely right. Making sure the top and bottom notches were aligned tightly together ended my problem of an incomplete flush. I still had to replace the seal to end the ghost flush. I'm so glad RUclips exists!
THANK YOU for this video. I replaced the gasket today and the leak was worse.. I found this video on RUclips and after lining up the slots, the toilet has stopped leaking.. Many thumbs up. Thanks again.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!. We replaced that blue seal twice this week, and it was still leaking. We got a new flush valve from a local plumbing store, and I was going to call a plumber this morning and ask to have that toilet fixed or replaced. I suspect we would have had to replace that 3 year old toilet because the plumber would not have known about those notches. I have had 3 plumbers over and none of them has ever seen this type of flush valve. I ran across your video just in time!
This video solved my ghost flushing after I had unsuccessfully changed the blue gasket. Once I saw this video, I realized I did not line up the notches in the cup! I reinstalled and “ presto”, no leaks! Thanks for saving a call to a plumber!
Thank you for this video --- solved my problem! I bought a new tank to toilet gasket and replaced the flapper seal, and the toilet was still leaking water into the bowl. Your info on lining up the notch was right on!
An absolute life saver video. thanks so much for posting this. i was frustrated for about an hour because it seemed like I was making my leak worse!!! Now they work as they did originally. Great toilet; even better secret repair tip
THANK YOU! I've been wrestling with my leaking toilet for months. I was ready to buy the whole assembly, but checked RUclips one more time. You've saved me time, money and water (which is also money!). JHHood
Thanks for the info. Mine has been leaking, causing 'phantom flushes'. When I took my seal out and examined it, the seal was actually a bit funnel shaped (slightly deformed over the years). I flipped it over and reinstalled as per your instructions so that the outside of the seal is now angled down. No more leaks.
Your video was VERY helpful! I did not line them up and it kept leaking. I was ready to call a plumber but thought let me just keep looking up videos and found yours !!! Thanks so much.
Thanks for this tip. It helped, but the more serious problem for us turned out to be that the 3rd party replacement rings we got from Lowe's were poor quality and ill-fitting compared to the blue ring from American Standard. We found the blue ring on Amazon, and that plus the information in this video seems to have stopped all of our leaking finally.
Thanks for the Video!! You saved me mucho frustration!!! I thought since I was still getting a leak that a crack must have developed in the housing down below or something....Thanks again!!
Gaaaaah! That's it. I just replaced the seal, and the toilet kept slow-leaking and running. I wish they'd put this little tip in the installation destructions, ah, I mean instructions. I just re-installed the seal the way you describe, and it works correctly now. Thanks so much!
I just replaced mine before I saw your video. I luckily noticed the 4 tabs before I resecured it. I set it together but it didn't seem right so I put some force onto it and heard a loud click. Thanks a lot for your video! I had a hard time finding the proper way as well.
Omg thank you. I couldn't figure out why after I changed the seal it still was not working. I would repeat the process at least four times until I ran across your video about lining up the cup grooves....presto, 1 attempt and it worked!!
Thank you, I can't tell you how frustrated I've been with this toilet. Since I have a septic tank, water flowing from the toilet is a bad thing. We were losing 1 liter per hour fro this toilet.
They will refund you if you have the original receipt, uninstall the toilet, break it, and send them the picture. This is the route I'm going. We have a septic tank and cannot risk have the toilet drain continually, which eventually saturates our leaching field and then backs up.
Went to change the seal, leak got worse. Tried multiple times and got frustrated and pulled up RUclips. Found your video first and problem solved! Thank you so much.
I installed the Korky seal, stopped the leak for only a few days. Checked as per this video, cap halves properly aligned. It seemed to me the Korky was a bit thinner than the original blue seal, so thought maybe nut wasn't compressing gasket enough when tightened to 2nd stop. So I marked the 2nd stop with a sharpie, got the top half back off, clipped the second stop off with side cutters. Very soft plastic, came right off. Smoothed with a couple of passes with a file. When I reinstalled, I was able to carefully tighten the nut almost a 1/4 turn more. This added clamping compressed the seal more, probably the original O ring too. No more leak! Another tip: I hate messing with the water cut off cause they always seem to leak after. So I use a rubber band to hold up the float, clip it to edge of tank corner. It's one of those vertical travel float assemblies, not the old style long arm.
Good advice, especially show how to open the flipper. My toilet flipper leaks, I found some bumps on the rubber. Just flip and turn the other side, it stop leaking. Save the money. Thanks!
Finally!!! Thank you very much. I had two toilets that leaked, replaced the gasket and they still leaked. After I saw this video, I check my installation and realized the slots were not aligned. Reinstalled properly and problem solved!!
Did all this. Still “ghost flushes”. Have added fishing line weights to top of plastic dome feature to weigh down dome. To increase seal. Strongly recommend you replace entire element with flush feature that sits in bottom of tank, as traditional units feature.
Thank you so much for doing the research and taking time to post this for everyone. It's a shame American Standard doesn't have this solution posted anywhere as easy to find as yours. My ghost flushing has been driving me nuts! $300.00 brand new toilet to have it leak? Come on American Standard!!!
Thanks so much. I put mine back together without knowing about the notches. Ooof. This fixed that issue. Note that the thumb screw can be hard to twist off. First time easy. Second time it was hard. So you might have to use a lot of force, turning counter-clockwis, to get it off . . . using just your fingers. Also note, as mentioned, the problem is often that a blister has formed on the ring, if you pierce it, the ring will snap back to its original shape and you many not even have to buy a new ring . . . or you might be able to just turn it over and use the other side.
This is 100% the fix if you've replaced the seal and water still leaks in the bowl. It's ponderous why American Standard doesn't note that in their seal replacement instructions.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO AS YOU SAVED ME TONS OF TIME AND FRUSTRATION TIOLET WAS LEAKING BAD AND I WAS AT WITS END AS TO WHAT WAS WRONG
The little black nut that unscrews has an o-ring installed in a groove. That cheapie o ring will deteriorate over several years and can cause a phantom flush. I replaced 2 Korky' flaps (they don't supply the o-ring in their kit) and was on my way to replacing the entire flush valve assembly, which involves about $40 in parts and seperating the tank from the bowl. New o-ring from a faucet set and problem solved.
very good point, but you can still experience leaks. At the base of the flush vale is another gasket. If that 1 has failed you need to get a replacement directly from American Standard. Home Depot & Lowes don't carry that one. To replace that gasket you will need to remove the tank from the base of the toilet. There is a very large locking nut that must be removed to separate the flush valve from the tank. If they no longer sell just the gasket you may have to buy an entire new flush valve kit. If you do so they should send you a plastic wrench to undo the large lock nut. The kit runs about $55.
I have the same toilet tank, every time you flushed - the ball split in half. I then tried glueing it together with super glue but then the gasket got stiff and the water started to leak. So I removed the tank; spend $40 and got the korky's toilet tank flapper replacement kit and installed it. It's working fine now but I wished I had watched this video before I did the glueing; could have saved some money.
turned the screw counter clock wise and turned over gasket rinsed off both and put back on lining the grooves up, thanks again. 5 mins. now I have to buy a gasket. for next time
The repair parts I bought (at Lowes home center) were made by Fluidmaster - it is NOT the original manufacturer's part -- that is why I didn't get the o-ring...
I removed the original seal and it had many surface imperfections (bumps).Poor quality control. I replaced it with a new smooth (greatly overpriced) seal. 48 years after landing on the moon this is where we're at.
Aligning the tabs properly was something I missed. I had not done this, still had a leak. I've ended up pulling the tank. It's 2:45 am, and I'm in my lazy boy w my iPad . I'm going to bed, then I expect to put the tank back on an hopefully I'll have no more leaks.
Thanks good advice but I kind of regret buying this $200 toilet had for just 1 yr and having seal problems the bad thing is that I bought 2 of them f***k
not necessary. pop the blister in the rubber seal with a pin. squeeze water out of seal and you are done! you don't have to take anything apart or replace it.
So Ive been hearing my toilet flush and no one is home but me, scared me that first time lol! so if we change the gasket and line up the notches might that work? we were going to buy a new flapper and attempt to install ,but now I'm thinking do this first. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this video!
But how do you get that black nut off the top so you can take it apart in the first place? It's not as simple as just turning it because both ends of it are stuck between two nobby things. I tried taking a screw driver to it to lift it up over the knobbies but no luck so if I can't get the nut off then I can't do anything. I can't get to the seal.
I know you'd have figured out by now but for anyone else looking for answer just let things dry or find something to give you enough grip and then just power through in anti clockwise direction.
Please send me the information you sent to the question Gail Ryder posted 2 months ago. I have the same problem. The screw is sitting between 2 small stops.
Thanks for the tip. Extremely useful, but I'm having some trouble of my own with the same toilet. it seems that I have a very low level in the bowl itself. NOT the tank. it fills up fine, but then the water level drops to about I'd say 2 to 3 inches of water. What a drag! This has been going on since day one. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Watch the video and follow the instructions. I believe we are all having the same issue as you and this video fixes this issue. We were about to post it for free on craigslist and I did one last attempt at finding a cure. It is sitting out front with the tank full. I marked the water line inside the tank with a pencil and in 1/2 hr it has not moved. I just flipped the blue seal over and wa-la!
Turlagh Darkstone I thought it was hard too and would need a tool but no... Just let things get dry or use something to give you enough grip and power through anti clockwise.
Thank you for the tip. I had just replaced the gasket and the leaking improved, but it still leaked. I just aligned the notches and I know I didn't do that when I replaced the gasket. Hope this solves the leaking. It's also good information since no instructions come with the new gasket.

Much appreciated.. I replaced the gasket and was going crazy since the leakage got worse.. aligning the notches did the trick. Thank you

Replaced the gasket still had ghost flushing until I watched this!

Just spent 2 days replacing my o-ring and it kept leaking until I saw your video.
THANKS!!!!
Thank you. I have reinstalled the gasket 3 times today and couldn't get it to stop leaking until watching your video.
Thanks this fixed my mystery problem, this is an easy but important step that's not included in any instructions.
I just replaced mine before I saw your video. I luckily noticed the 4 tabs before I resecured it. I set it together but it didn't seem right so I put some force onto it and heard a loud click. Thanks a lot for your video! I had a hard time finding the proper way as well.
I will back up this information, i had problems with my Champion 4 for years until i found out about the notches.

You are the man and a lifesaver!!! That sure fixed the problem!
You are a lifesaver. I was ready to toss it and buy a new toilet. This worked like a charm!
I followed the video & it worked for me. I just popped the blisters on my flush valve washer, and it's good to go.
Good advice, especially show how to open the flipper. My toilet flipper leaks, I found some bumps on the rubber. Just flip and turn the other side, it stop leaking. Save the money. Thanks!

Thanks to this video made life super easy. The instructions that american standered includes doesent specify the tabs. Thank you for exsplaining this.
This is 100% the fix if you've replaced the seal and water still leaks in the bowl. It's ponderous why American Standard doesn't note that in their seal replacement instructions.

Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! Thank you so much.
Really handy tip, I couldn't figure out why the new ring was leaking!
finally realized the green had to seat. Thank you. kept leaking anyway. not now

Great job explaining it! You look as angry as I felt when it was still leaking with a new seal! Ha!!Ha!! Thank you!!!
Wife answering here: Yes he was very angry!
turned the screw counter clock wise and turned over gasket rinsed off both and put back on lining the grooves up, thanks again. 5 mins. now I have to buy a gasket. for next time
you're the MAN! high 5! thank you for your help
Husband is so happy he made this video!
This is exactly what these toilets need - I wish they gave you the o-ring with the washer...
The repair parts I bought (at Lowes home center) were made by Fluidmaster - it is NOT the original manufacturer's part -- that is why I didn't get the o-ring...
Thanks! Will try it out.
Much obliged!!
Thank you SO MUCH for this!
I removed the original seal and it had many surface imperfections (bumps).Poor quality control. I replaced it with a new smooth (greatly overpriced) seal. 48 years after landing on the moon this is where we're at.
MrTuberguber American standard sends out free replacement. I'd suggest that you use your 10 year warranty

I did not align the notches! ugh thanks so much for the help!
THANK YOU!!!! I don’t have to buy a new toilet.
Wish I saw this much earlier. Thank you!
Thank you for your video. It was very helpful.
Good Information Video
Hope this fixes it - I think it will. Thank you very much in any event.
Thanks good advice but I kind of regret buying this $200 toilet had for just 1 yr and having seal problems the bad thing is that I bought 2 of them f***k
Feel your pain! We have THREE! Ugh. But after the fix, we have not had any issues. Installed in 2013.
Wow great video! save me hours! I could not get it to stop leaking. You have to align those slots. That little tip is not in the instructions!!!!!!
I have that but no thumb screw. Its the o ring that isn't stuck to anything. It flops around and doesn't seal anything.
not necessary. pop the blister in the rubber seal with a pin. squeeze water out of seal and you are done! you don't have to take anything apart or replace it.
Hope the groves work I've been fighting this toilet for 6 months I bought a house they were in it was about to replace the whole damn toilet
The rod keeps sticking up. The flapper is fine when it's down sealed. But when flush the rod sticks up. Any idea about that?
So Ive been hearing my toilet flush and no one is home but me, scared me that first time lol! so if we change the gasket and line up the notches might that work? we were going to buy a new flapper and attempt to install ,but now I'm thinking do this first.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this video!
We just bought this American Standard toilet 2 years ago..and this valve seal is already failing! That to complete BS.
Replaced everything, it still leaks. I'm going tho replace it but not with American Standard.
AWESOME!!!!!! Thank you very much
New toilet 2020 has no screw to open bubble. And no any info how to do it.
Thanks!
So, there are 3 ways for water to get past this contraption?
Thanks. Excellent video! You've shown all the details and your hands were not in the way, like some other helpful YT videos.
Hi Gail, I'll get my husband to respond to your question. Thanks!
I know you'd have figured out by now but for anyone else looking for answer just let things dry or find something to give you enough grip and then just power through in anti clockwise direction.
cup the the base with one hand--use pliers to pull up and twist counterclockwise---ran into that problem an hour ago
Gail Ryder counter clockwise with some force.
Twist off the little nubs themselves. Use needle nose pliers and those plastic nubs twist right off. Bingo. Now it screws right off.
Thanks! Good post
Aligning it with the notches improves things, but that ring still fails eventually. Not a good toilet at all. American Standard screwed this up.
Good to know. We are on year three with three toilets. So we'll see how it goes in the future!
Thanks brother
THAAAAAANK YOOOUUUU!!!!!!!!
Laurel Jaeger my husband says, you're welcome!
Please send me the information you sent to the question Gail Ryder posted 2 months ago. I have the same problem. The screw is sitting between 2 small stops.
Odette Willis it would appear he never replied! I'll ask him to respond.

Thanks for the tip. Extremely useful, but I'm having some trouble of my own with the same toilet. it seems that I have a very low level in the bowl itself. NOT the tank.

thank but they no longer have a black nut on top. how do i remove.
I'll ask my husband, but we haven't had to fix ours since he made this video 6 years ago. And sounds like they have changed it up
@@galfromva i understand thank you.
Still leaks
How do you get the black thumbscrew loose?
Turlagh Darkstone I thought it was hard too and would need a tool but no... Just let things get dry or use something to give you enough grip and power through anti clockwise.
