I was taught when installing heads to set them on, then run the head bolts in hand tight so the heads can still move freely. Then install the intake manifold first, before torquing the heads down. Use the intake manifold to square up the heads to the manifold, then torque the heads. Just how I was taught. Been doing it that way for forty years. Seems to work well for me.
Just like watching my grandad in the workshop when i was a boy. Methodical, particular, and knowledgeable. Great series

I have never seen an engine being reassembled with such dirty parts.
To avoid leaking and contamination, my parts are throughly cleaned and inspected.
You must live in that perfect world I hear about sometimes. 😅

Thanks Paul, luckily the lifters are self adjusting on these and as long as they're healthy and clean, they should collapse down nicely, it's only if they're blocked or seized and it's worth checking just in case, then you won't lock anything up!... thanks for your kind feedback mate.

Learned a bunch from this vid, Del, and most notably the required multiple passes with the torque wrench. Makes sense to me now. She’s gonna be a burner… hopefully someone you know has access to a dyno to get her power tested after all is reassembled?

Thanks Gary, there is a dyno locally, but as with all new engine builds, I'd want to run it in for 500 miles first and bed everything down, then change the oil, also any carb adjustments along the way to get the plugs cooking exactly the right colour and then it could be a go-er! I have had an 883 but mostly my speciality was 950 Moto Guzzi Vee Twins of most types. Harley Davidson do make their designs over complex in comparion, but then again so do Rolls Royce and Bentley, and they're considered pretty good too.

I can't help but share that while watching you put the top end together after the head was on, it felt like watching someone assemble a double cheeseburger LOL. I'm probably going to offend some by saying that but it isn't a personal attack, just what I felt was a humorous perspective. I admit that I'm new to the American v-twin's inner workings so what might seem conventional to some might be awkward to people like me. I've only worked on inline 4s and more recently the Honda V4. The carb re-fit will be interesting to watch as well. Thanks Del.

do you use 883 cylinder heads with 1200 cylinder kit? combustion chamber on the 883 heads are 49cc. on the 1200 heads - 62cc. Compression ratio on the 883 heads will be 12,1, on the 1200 - 9,67. Maybe 12,1 is too much? i think better to use 1200 cylinder heads, so valves diameter on the 1200 heads is bigger

Hey brother, yes I did, back in the 1980's I trained as a bus fitter, have always worked on vehicles since I was a teenager and have built my knowledge up over my lifetime, I worked in the motorcycle trade for 10yrs and picked up extensive knowledge in that time too. Hey Del, how come you didn’t clean up the heads and rocker cover? Seems a shame to have those brand new cylinders with the old corroded other bits with them. Not having a go, genuine question :)
At this point, im planning to paint the entire engine later on... so it'll all get prepped for it at that time.
@@xaviercrane7123 No mate, it's a nightmare trying to mask gasket faces and make absolutely sure you get none inside the engine, it's far easier to paint a motor when it's assembled and sealed and with the engine out of the frame, which it will be for the re-paint... stick with it mate, all will become clear!

Dell, a question for you (you may have covered this but I missed it) If you have increased the capacity, and the stroke is unchanged (which I think it is) the bore must be bigger. However, you are still using the standard heads. Surely (don't call me Shirley!) there is now a difference in diameter between the bore and the head - the head has to be smaller. Isn't this going to affect the efficiency of combustion?
This piston kit is designed and rated by S&S as compatible with 883 heads!
you make these thing look soo easy like your just assembling legos. Best i can do is do a oil, spark plug and chain and sprocket change.

Hi ya mate, I got a 2000 xlh 1200 sportster that I’m itching my head about she used to ride a dream and rip, but the bike started taking a little longer to start and now it doesn’t fire up atall, I have spark and fuel getting to the plugs, I’ve not messed with the timing or nothing as I haven’t had the block apart, I swear I’m missing something simple but for the life of me I can’t get it running or to even fire up in the slightest but seems to turn over fine when button is being pressed if anyone could potentially chuck some ideas to me thatll be great
Also had the carb apart all cleaned and put back to the exact settings
Did you replace the umbrella seals in the spacer below the rocker covers?

Hey Del, I own a HD iron 883 (2012), every light on the cluster works, except for the neutral light (N). But what’s happening is that when I wash my bike, the neutral light (N) comes back on. Can you please explain why this is happening. Would greatly appreciate your time to answer my query, Thank You. 😃

You ought to have refaced the heads and reground the valves. What's the point in spending so much time/money and only do 1/2 a job?

If I tear mine down, I'll replace the push rod tubes with old school ones, just preferences... By the way if you are using Cometic gaskets FOLLOW THEIR instructions or you'll wind up damaging them.
Can i remove the jugs and pistons from a 2019 1200 engine i have and slip them in my 2002 883? I would install new rings and use the 883 heads. No one has told me if this is doable.

Heads up if you're using cometic gaskets they don't use the 1/4 turn method. Their final torque is 42 ft lbs.
Interesting !! The 1/4 turn was expressly directed in the S&S instructions !!!
@@Moonfleet41 hope the final torque is somewhere near that. Mine ended up being another 1/8+ turns over the 1/4 turn.

Any spring plate is a weak point, almost even a liability, so it's never wrong to remove them !

Thanks John, that was my understanding too, plenty of scope on the cv, just need a bigger main jet and lift the needle a tad, but the Dynajet kit I've got comes with an upgraded lightweight slide for quicker throttle response! And thanks for asking how I am, almost a year on, I'm feeling a lot better these days.

Yeah, i made a judgement call on those. apparently not available and on untimed back order, they couldn't give me a date for delivery, could have waited weeks. if they're a problem it's dead easy to pop the lids off and pop some new ones in later... Cheers mate.

ok, may be a dumb question, may not.... BUT.. Why keep the spark plugs in?
Cheers buddy, the plugs are purely in there for my peace of mind so as not to drop anything down the holes, and although it sounds unlikely, imagine a small nut or washer whilst assembling all the engine mounts etc., slips out your fingers and drops down in to the cylinder... so an old plug is better than a wedge of cloth which can easily be sucked in the hole when you turn the engine over by hand for some other reason and then you've got to fish that out somehow!! I'll be popping a new set in shortly, they're just there for peace of mind.
