Interestingly I also use a white pencil on dark woods like walnut. Another good video. Thanks for posting this. I also found that chop sticks (repurposed from the Chinese restaurant ) make great glue spreaders for small projects or holes. They can easily sharpened or adjusted to work for a variety of projects.
I've used a plug cutter better, but it makes a really big hole. Also, if the cutter hits the screw, it ruined. That gets expensive compared to a piece of scrap pipe.
I think you underestimate your own talents. The screwextractor cut into the surface very cleanly and only generated smoke when further into the cut. Was there an option of did you consider upgrading this joint? It is clear that the failure was due to the metal of the threaded screw being weak at a highly stressed movable joint? This repair likely sets up the owner for a similar failure. A through bolt seems like a much better choice than the woodscrew
Thank you very much. I think the root cause of the failure was a poor quality screw. Any force that could snap a steel screw should have broken the wood first. Both sides have new screws, so it shouldn't be a problem in the future.
Hello non related question I inherited Moms bow front oak china cabinet. One leg came off should i fix just one or all 4 ? No issues with other legs. Thank you in advance
If the other legs are tight, it's best to leave as is. Old hide glue comes apart easily when it has failed, but if it's still holding, you will break the wood before the joints separate.
Thanks - another interesting repair with several useful techniques.
You are very welcome.
Nicely done! Love the screw extractor. Your hold down jigs for your bench are very clever.
Thank you very much.
Nice job! thanks for sharing

The pencil is labeled "China marker". It's a sort of greasy wax that holds an edge. I've tried other white markers, but this works best on wood.
Using the drill press as a light duty lathe is a good idea that I will remember for future projects.
Thank you very much.
You could have used a plug cutter for making dowles but your home made pipe bit worked well enough.
