I’ve been a Tesla and Elon fan boy since 2015, but I really think his involvement in politics is wrecklessly screwing over his shareholders. He has an absolute right to do it, but he may not care if it loses him money but my children and grandchildren have no choice but to care. I guess the pull of celebrity has gone to his head.
The bullying of the Left has gone to his head. Biden trying to damage his companies, Biden ignoring Tesla when talking about EVs. An ocean of social media trolls hating him after he became “the richest person in the world” (on paper anyway). His kid being convinced by his friends to hate his father because he was a billionaire. Elizabeth Warren saying he paid no taxes when he paid the most in history. People on Mastodon working together to try to get an unhinged possible assassin the whereabouts of Elon and his young son. Elon cracked and I can see why. Power doesn’t corrupt the powerful person, it corrupts the people around him because we humans have a strong instinct to hate successful people.
Trump will say anything his crowd wants to hear. Question is, can you trust his handshake. He's also bringing back clean coal. Let's check in with West Virginia and find out if promises kept.
When the infrastucture gets better people will switch over to EV's without government interference. They need to get rid if subsidies to the EV industry and the fossil fuel industries, they need to stand on their own.
Infrastructure is a problem primarily for two groups: 1) Those who didn't buy a Tesla and 2) Those who don't have access to home charging (such as most apartment dwellers). Infrastructure is not a problem for trips... if you own a Tesla. And, for a much smaller group, owning an EV can be a problem for farmers, ranchers and others in remote areas. And, in general, long distance towing is a problem for EVs and will continue to be a problem.... but long distance towing is mostly an RV experience, which is a small number of people.
The failure of US Legacy Auto is the fault of management. GM wanted to create 30 new models! Absolutely stupid. Even with incentives Legacy Auto is not adapting. C-Level Executive need to lose their big bonuses for crappy management before anything will change.
I wouldn’t pin much hope on Trumps election. His chances don’t look likely anymore. Hopefully Harris and her team will be more forward thinking regarding EVs than Biden was.
@@bobwallace9753 - That is a good thought. Democrats are expanding EV growth options so they are already on board. You might be right. It may be insurance.
Cancellation of subsidy leaves the door open for Tesla to HELP or provide (sell) other OEMS with necessary cost structures with hardware, software, battery etc etc etc
Get rid of the electoral college and you would get better policies. With so few states determining the results of a presidential election you can’t afford to upset voters in battleground states. Legacy auto and unions are concentrated in battleground states. National popular vote for president would eliminate that as a consideration when determining policy. The other issue is the filibuster. Without the 60 vote requirement to end the filibuster the IRA would not have been tailored to please Joe Manchin. Bad policy had to be added to the bill in order to get it passed.
One of the reasons the electoral college exists is so every state has a say in who runs the country. Without it, California would decide who runs the country in every election. I'm guessing you're a democrat.
Wow, normally Jeff is really good on facts, but this time it's so wrong. 1. You state there need to be a way to ensure battery and car production in the US, but offer no alternative to the IRA. The core of the IRA is not EV rebates, it's moving battery and battery martial production to the US, but having battery production in the US without a place to put them makes no sense, hence the EV creates, when you use batteries sourced in the US. Yes, giving full incentives for 7500W is wrong, but no bill is ever perfect. So, please provide a better alternative. 2. There are no EV mandate period. There is a reduction in greenhouse gas with 45% by 2035, which the industry can decide how to achieve and currently EV is the obvious choice, but no mandate. Trump stating he will repeal this on his first day is only political rhetoric, like it was last time, as the industry follows California, which will still require it, as it's for smog/health reasons. The rhetoric may get him elected, but will be a nail in the legacy US automakers. 3. 100% agree on the outrageousness of the federal grants for EV production to companies that have declared they wont produce EVs at scale.

@wisdomandy9361 Trump doesn't believe climate change is real. He's not an environmentalist, doesn’t like renewables, and he believes in subsidies for gas and oil and not EVs. His VP is also pro gas and oil.
That is way too simplistic. Trump will back American industry over foreign industry. It’s not a question of preference for one fuel over the others. I also suspect that Trump will seriously consider abandoning unprofitable companies in favour of those which are bringing profitable and attractive products to market. That’s not to suggest that he’s not subject to lobbying from the oil industry and the legacy industry. But he is not, as you insist, diametrically opposed to Tesla’s mission. And it is most certainly not the end of any discussion - to think so is infantile.
You are talking about needing the government to do some deep thinking and find a better way to move Ford and GM to produce good EVs. If you think any deep thinking would be done by a Trump administration then you are acting like idiots.
the short term large financial impact of removing the IRA credits would be significant for tesla. their cash flow would decrease by billions of dollars per year. also, Tesla/Elon supported the "EV mandate" that requires OEMs to increase the average range of their fleets. in fact they wanted it to be significantly stronger. we live in a world of very large gas/oil subsidies and as long as that is the case there needs to be a counter balance for EVs and new energy technologies that are far more important to the US economy of the future than gas/oil.
NAFTA was designed to help Mexican companies export goods to US and Canada. I don’t think many folks wanted BYD to open plants in Mexico to hire workers at $5 an hour to build cars to ship to US. NAFTA needs to be amended
