  • This showroom-new looking 1975 Porsche 914 is owned by the fiancee of our favorite collector, Karl Muth, owner of the Ligenfelter Jaguar XJ we love so much. This 914 was converted in-period from the original 1800cc engine to 1920cc's, and features a select few period modifications to go along with it, but in every other way, the 20,000 mile 914 feels absolutely showroom new. Also, Matt puts on possibly the worst driving display in the history of this show when he repeatedly messes up third gear. Watch and laugh.
    Check out Karl and Hannah's perfect 914 at Wheelwell!

      Sounds like it either needs warmed up, a bit of a carb tune, or it's caught in that area between the idle and main jets. My car was never happy at 50-55mph on the highway, needed to get to 65 to make it happy. Sounds like it needs shift bushings or rennshift, mine shifts sweet as can be :D

    • @Ry666
      @Ry666 7 лет назад +2

      i'm not sure it was so much bad shifting by Matt, more that the car couldnt get out of its own way with the carbs not being tuned for the altitude. when it's bogging like that over part throttle, it makes for a bitch of a time shifting gears cuz you're contantly stuck between gears.
      just find a sweet spot revs wise and keep it in whatever gear that is.
      *edit: watched more of the video. yah Matt was struggling with that gearbox some. but the carb tuning certainly didnt help. :)

    • @Malthus
      @Malthus 7 лет назад

      agreed, but not downshifting when the car is struggling clearly doesn't help ...that's if you can find the right gear(as he realized later on he was going into 4th instead of 2nd).

    • @Zundfolge
      @Zundfolge 7 лет назад +9

      To be fair, stock 914 shifters shift like an old truck. My guess is a new set of bushings would help tremendously.

    • @Malthus
      @Malthus 7 лет назад +5

      Maybe it does need new bushings...or maybe the owner could have driven it for a little bit for Matt to see where gears are. XD

      People die every day in so called high tech, navigation, bluetooth, anti lock breaking, 9 air bag cars!!! Tupperware plastic cars of today have safety improvements and even with all the assist features in today's cars does not make a happy throtle mustang and corvette owner a genious in driving skills! Most think they are great drivers and lack connection with the car and become complacent because they get used to the car doing it all for them and That becomes the real death trap!!!

      Just not fans of this "hotrodding" bug.
      In my opinion older cars should not be chasing track times and high HP. They should be restored to original cams, original stroke/bore size and have their original ECU/fuel systems/suspension/exhaust.
      When I see these things I just think they must be an embarrassment to drive. Their owners need to just accept that they don't own fast cars and that they should capitalize on the fact that their car is now quite rare and should be restored to showcase what the 70's had to offer.

    • @TheRealProski87
      @TheRealProski87 7 лет назад +1

      Dankus Memus while I agree with you at an extent, that some classics should be restored, I don't think it should be the only way. It's a Porsche, so why not upgrade and tune it? They have the potential of running good times. It could make the driving experience more fun to the driver. They might not be the fastest, but they drive a hell of a cool 914 that's quick. Plus, you could do upgrades with old Porsche parts. I just don't see your logic here

      then you'd sell it for really cheap, someone with half a brain would come along that knows the high altitude "problem" can be solved by simply raising the idle when in the canyons.

    • @ImLeuff
      @ImLeuff 7 лет назад +5

      That's why carburated cars or motorcycles can be picked up for a great deal, people don't know how to work with them, think it's a huge problem when in reality it just needs a clean and voila, you got yourself a nice set of wheels for not a lot of money.
      I don't think many Porsche owners are that clueless though

      It really looked like he was starting out in 4th (a common problem with the 914 shiftier). Carbs aren't that bad at altitude if you go with 40mm or larger Webers. I used to own a carbonated 914 with a pair of 40mm IDFs. I bought the car when I lived at 1200ft and moved to 6400ft and never had any altitude problems and never re-jetted it.

    My father owned an extremely rare 1987 Porsche 930 Turbo Slant Nose from 1987 until the mid 90's. I've seen a lot of 911 Turbo's around over the years, but I have not seen another 930 Turbo Slant Nose in person since my father sold his. Even today that 930 would look amazing if you saw one, so just imagine the reactions we used to get in the 80's & 90's with it. Everybody would point and/or give us a thumbs up. People would come up to my father and ask him questions about it. It was crazy, but it was a lot of fun too. I'll never forget the insanely strong smell of leather that Porsche had. To this day, it's by far the strongest leather smell my father and I have ever smelled in a car. His new at the time, 2007 Mercedes CLS63 AMG didn't even come close to that leather smell. Anyway, that would be so cool if you did a 930 Turbo Slant Nose one take one day, Matt. As rare as they are, they are around, so you never know. Great video as always!

    • @StormAutoAdventures
      @StormAutoAdventures 7 лет назад

      I just looked it up. For 1987, there were only 144 original Porsche 930 Turbo Slant Nose models built! No wonder why I haven't seen another one in person lol! From 1987-1989, there were only 349 originals built! Wow.

      Agreed. People should really learn how to get the Bosch D-Jet system running properly because those carbs are probably costing the engine 10% of its potential power. Had I not sold the carbbed 2.0L I owned, a microsquirt system was on the to-do list.
      That said, there's something not right in that carb setup. Even with two guys in it at 3500 feet it shouldn't have run that poorly (this assumes Matt wasn't in the wrong gear all the time ... 914s shift like trucks so they're real easy to put in the wrong gear).

    I've got a 73 914 - until you've driven one, don't underestimate the number of times you'll blow upshifts either into 4th when you wanted second or 5th when you wanted 3rd. Had a '73 914 for 16 years. I converted to 1.8 liter barrels and 40 idf Webers among other mods, made 120hp. That plus sway bars and a short shifter made it fantastic. Wasn't fast but it could outcorner almost anything I experienced. Did bog at low speed in first gear but only if I gave it too much gas from a start. Ran easily to 6K rpm (redline 5600) due I think to balanced crank and lightened flywheel. Sold it in '89 for more than I paid for it.

    Does anyone remember his Jaguar One Take? That was the proper Kind of awesome. Glad to see the owner back on the show even though the car was kinda difficult - yet interesting.

    That's a pretty rad car. My 66 bug was very difficult to drive when I first bought it and I hated it. It only took me a few hours to get the revs right and after that it was a dream to drive. I'd love to have that 914. Very nice car.

    I built those engines for a living back in the seventies and eighties and I can tell you those carbs are too big for a 1.9ltr. type 4 engine. Even with a cam, that little bit of altitude should not have caused such a huge flat spot... Jetting those Webers (or clones) takes quite a bit of experience to get it right. Those are obviously wrong...

    @TheSmokingTire on behalf of the 914 community, let me know if you want to drive some properly tuned, properly setup 914's :)
    The 914 was one of the original cars that got crazy engine swaps. From the typical SBC in the 70's to now the LS motor, Subarus, Rotary, Honda, Mitsubishi, Audi swaps (personally I am finishing up my Audi turbo swap). These cars come alive when they get some power behind them.

    Beautiful car. However I don't understand why it's running so rough at that altitude. My 1969 , 1.6 Karmann Ghia with dual Weber 32 carbs (tuned at sea level) still runs fantastic at 8500ft elevation in Colorado. Very similar setup as this car. Awesome to see cars like these being featured. Keep the good work up!

    the issue in the beginning reminds me of an issue i had with my old carbureted mark II golf. the reason was a porous vacuum tube to the carb which caused a too rich fuel air mixture. i'm sure this guy knows how to take care of a car, but this might be the problem here as well.

  • @YouWillSeeEverything
    @YouWillSeeEverything 7 лет назад +2

    you guys in the comments have to remember it originally had a electric fuel injection (in the 70s) which would have dealed with the altitude very good. it was meant as a sporty little lady's car and i think most of you who write "aw it's a piece of shit my v8 has 8 times the power" have never driven one and did not understand what this cars are about. matt is a v8 guy too and after he drove it he totally gets it. your intolerant way of dealing with everything that isn't a 90s mercedes e class with a plastic dodge body, an iron block v8 and a hellcat badge on it is really annoying me.

    It’s sad when supposed “car experts” know nothing about what they discuss. First, this is NOT an “accurate, 20K original miles, unrestored” 914. Second, this is also not one of the more perfect 914’s out there and he was ripped off. It factually does not have only 20K miles but at least 120K. A 20K mile car would not require an engine rebuild, a new paint job (obvious since all 914s since 1974 had vinyl on their targa bars vs body paint, and also the “PORSCHE” letters on the engine screen have been clearly re-positioned from stock after painting), reupholstered seats (obvious from non-stock perforations and horizontal bars on headrests - and there were no “nicer seats” with the appearance package), and replaced rocker panels (ABS rocker panels are a common cheap fix for rusted original rocker panels).
    He also states that this is the “Closest thing to if you bought a 914 in 1975? This is what is was like.” “Original everything.” What?!? It has a different engine, suspension, wheels, tires size, brakes, and also carbs (not “a great idea on 914s”; the stock fuel injection is far superior as this video shows) but sure, …just like an original 1975 914. Whatever you say.
    To anyone that knows these cars, they know it is not original and doesn’t have only 20K miles. Also a 1975 1.8L is the least desirable of all 914s. Porsche 914s are far better than this video represents. But Matt is right, they are a blast to drive.
