To be fair, the parents did split them up like inanimate objects. “You belong to your father and Sharon belongs to me.” They didn’t make any attempt to see their non-custodial child from the age of 1. They’re horrible people and frankly, the kids should be way more upset.
They were horrible people, and the twins were upset enough to do something about it! Switching places to meet and get to know the parents they never had was the best way to learn the truth about what happened to them and why!
Don’t think they were horrible people they just couldn’t be around each other and wanted to avoid confrontation. Don’t it they would have done in real life but it’s Hollywood they need something to make people suspend disbelief
My favorite scene with the grandfather was when he went and subtly but bluntly suggested to Maggie that she needed to update her clothes and her look before heading to California to see Mitch.
I actually like the character more due to this scene at 2:00 - 2:40. He shows that he can be taking something like a mother and daughter talking for once real serious. When he said, "I am putting my foot DOWN.", I was like "That's right!".
I saw this when I was young (I’m 56 now) and, had the biggest crush on Haley Mills. It wasn’t until later when I realized she was 20 years older than me. Simply heart breaking. LOL!!!! Another great movie was The Trouble with Angles. I was also a fan of The Nanny and the Professor with Juliet Mills. Very talented sisters.

Have you seen her in Tiger Bay? Hailey was about 12 years old and is a kid who witnessed a murder... don't want to spoil it, but the murderer comes after her! You must see it! She's fantastic in it! Loved her in Pollyanna, too! So diverse!
Except the scenario of divorced parents splitting twins ("you take one and I'll take the other") is utterly silly. It works as drama when you're watching it, but feels like a gimmick afterwards.
I watched this movie many many times yet I can't stop tearing up at this scene and also the camp scene when the twins found out they're long lost sisters each missing one parent.
I always loved this movie as a kid, then I became a Mom and there is NO WAY I could "bifurcate" my kids and not see one ever again. My soul would die. I get that it's just a program plot, but it bugged me when I watched it as an adult. And yet, I still love it.
My very favorite movie. Loved it so much that I saw it three times my mom would not pay for the third time so I collected pop bottles in order to be able to see it a third time.
I love how you saved up to see it a third time, in the theater! My now 21-year old daughter got the experience of seeing this classic in the theater too, when she was around 5th grade. All the Girl Scout troops in my hometown pooled together and rented out the entire local theater, and they showed this movie to the girls. As a parent chaperone, I think I was even more excited than my daughter!

Susan in Disguise played chess with the grandfather, and maybe Sharon gave her piano lessons without the piano. After revealing that she was Susan, she let the grandmother know she HATED the lousy music lessons.

I think "dressing to the nines" part of your comment seems to be a characteristic of upper class Bostonians . I have seen this in two movies done earlier where the setting was Boston. I am thinking of H.M Pelham Esq and the Late George Apply both adaptations of Marchand books brought to the screen.

Kind of depressing reading all these comments written by elders, saying they watched it around when it came out. Time is a precious thing. I first watched it about 2 or 3 years ago on Disney+, Im 15 now and I turn 16 in two months. I love old films, and this one is one of my favorite movies. It makes the 60's seem like an amazing time to be alive, and as a history nerd i dont think that would be the case for a lot of people. However all of the outfits worn in this movie are so adorable, and the architecture and scenery is so amazing to look at. The actors are so fun to watch on screen, and the story is very unique, despite being unrealistic. But hey! This is Disney. I prefer this one over the new one, however both are really good!
As a kid in a small, coastal, California town it was AWESOME!!! Simpler time, although the same problems existed - minus so-called "woke" idjits. I was fortunate, I know.

At least Susan called out her mother in this version. When you're a kid you think it would be so cool to discover a twin and get your parents back together, then you grow up and realize the parents were the most selfish and immature assholes to ever procreate!!! This would absolutely never happen in real life- at the very least, the judge or the grandparents would have cried foul. EDIT: I am aware that the child welfare system is inherently flawed and children are split apart from each other all the time which is horrendous and wrong. The scenario in this film has nothing to do with the foster system. My point here is that the parents are two educated, financially very well-off people who decided it would be better to simply forget about ever having any sort of relationship with one of their children than risk having to be in the same zip code long enough to hand them over to the other parent when it was their turn. To say nothing of depriving their daughters the experience of growing up with a twin sister to share life with, both the good and the bad. Every. single. adult. in. this. film. failed. these. girls!
So sorry you had that experience. Marriage isn't easy. Its a commitment and a choice. You have to treat your spouse with courtesy and respect. Even when you get angry discuss the problem in private to get a solution. Love is grand but passion doesn't last. Divide up the chores so there's no resentment. Communicate and love and support and discipline your kids together. I wish you well.
Actually I have heard of this in real life. Plus it is very common in the foster care/adoption system. I know from personal experience. Thankfully God brought us to a loving lady who fought EXTREMELY hard to keep us 3 together. And Mom and Dad adopted us! If it wasn't for Mom we either would have been sent back in a month (and we wouldn't have lived much longer) or at best all 3 been split up, even my Identical Twin. They did have us 3 split for a while. So I can see this happening. With one on the east coast and one on the west. They probably thought they would never know it, so it wouldn't be as bad for them as a 6 month split. Of course we know it wouldn't be, but after all this is a movie and they needed a good story plot.
Susan told her mother many kids at camp had the same problems, and did the 6-month split. I don't know if that would work in real life, but I'm sure parents can try.
Saw this with my parents when it came out and I ended up with a crush on Hayley Mills. A few years later at our local community theater the fire company sponsored a movie for we kiddies to enjoy. By the time the title of the movie was passed back to the end of the line, around where I was standing, it had become "Parrot Talk" but it was this film.

I actually surprised at the quality of this clip. I still own/watch the VHS and it is wonderful quality. That is one thing I have never gotten. For HD to be better and have more pixels, you would not think it would lower the quality any.

Children aren't part of the marital property division, to be divvied up like household goods. I liked both versions of The Parent Trap, but overall I enjoyed the 1998 movie more. The supporting cast was strong, and the characters Martin and Chessy added a lot to the story. Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid were perfectly cast. I loved how naturally they related to "both" daughters. But parenting styles in the late 1990s were far less rigid than they were in the late 1950s. It would be hard to imagine Maureen O'Hara agreeing with one of the twins that something "totally sucks" like Natasha Richardson did. 🤣
Vivian Powell, agreement or no agreement, I was STILL angry that they couldn't share their own children! I agree with you that children aren't "parental property to be divided like household goods" and if they HAD to do that, BOTH versions should have mentioned whether or not they would tell them the truth when they reached adulthood!
You have to take this as a child's fantasy, or a modern version of a fairy tale, not as realism. In real life, this bargain to each take a twin is horrific. To a child, the idea of a secret twin you might run into at camp is a fantasy--as is reuniting divorced parents.
In spite of the "bickering" between the grandparents I think they loved each other in their hearts. I remember in the wedding scene at the end they were there smiling at each other. I think that's what happens to couples who have been married a long time. Sometimes they get tired of each other's company.
I saw both versions, and Susan and Sharon and Hallie and Annie didn't allow fear to stop from doing the right thing by switching places to find out what happened to them and why. Twins who are split up like this is downright rotten, and they had every right and reason to know the truth!

I was shocked that there was NO mention of whether or not Joanna Barnes played the same Vicky who was engaged to Mitch! That was the one mistake made in the remake!
Verbena said what needed to be said. She told Sharon in Disguise what Vicky saw in their father: "I'll give you a million reasons, and he's got them right in the bank." It was the same thing in the remake. Meredith only wanted Nick for his bank account.
keaneperson, that's a possibility. In the remake, Sammy didn't go into hiding, and he learned the truth about Hallie being a twin. He got to know Annie, and eventually came to like her.
Susan tried to make sense out of what happened, and it's true that sometimes, marriages just plain don't work out. The children shouldn't have to suffer for their parents' mistakes!

Grandma was into nothing but classical music. As a result, Sharon thought Ricky Nelson was Susan's boyfriend, and Susan said she wished he was. It's also possible Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't "popular" in England.
That wouldn't work. The movie itself took place in 1960, and things were very different back in those days. It would have made more sense to do that in the remake.

"I'm sorry mother?" What the hell is she apologizing for? Her mom is the one who was never there. Not so much as a phone call or a card at Christmas or her birthday. Not only that but keeping her from her own twin sister. Wth?! Any woman who can do that doesn't deserve to get to know the child you ignored, in my opinion. This was a good scene. And I agree that if this were in today's world the word lousy would never have come up. I can think of some other choice words to replace it.
I think she apologized because as angry and hurt as she is over what their parents did to them, she still desperately wants a mother that loves her. To be honest the kids were by far the more mature and adult about the whole mess. The adults ran away from their problems and ended up sacrificing their children for their own selfishness.
Susan was apologizing for not letting their mother know sooner. Neither Susan nor Sharon wrote any letters, and I couldn't blame them for that. If it was me and I had a twin sister, I'd say: "Don't get mad, get even! If our parents won't talk to us, why should we talk to them!" After telling the truth, we'd take turns explaining ourselves by saying things like: "We were lied to, deceived, and deprived, so you can't blame us for being angry! That's why we didn't write any letters. We wanted the truth about what happened to us and why. That's why we switched places, so we could meet and get to know the parents we never had." Even though it's against the law to go home to a parent you don't legally belong to, there's NO law against visiting. That's what happened in BOTH versions.
In the 1998 remake, Elizabeth the mother mentioned that the divorce was so emotional that splitting the twins was agreed upon so that they never had to see each other again. Annie and Hallie were younger girls when they met, so it could have been the reason why they were now beginning to be more curious about their parents. With Susan and Sharon it was indeed crueller to not have start letting them know and allowing them to begin communicating with the other.
Age is only a number, because ANYONE who learns the truth about being a twin also wants to know the truth about what happened and why. The parents were cruel in BOTH versions, and wouldn't you be angry if the same thing happened to you?

If you weren’t intentionally separated from your twin, you might have had Vanishing Twin Syndrome in utero. It’s when a pregnancy starts out as twins but one twin stops growing after just a few weeks and seemingly ”vanishes”. If the twin was never spotted on an early ultrasound there is usually no way to 100 % prove it, but it has been proven that surviving twins, even those who lost their twin that early, are often affected psychologically and go through life feeling like something is missing.

A friend and I watched the remake, and he felt that the girls at some point should have been upset with the parents over their separation. He breathed in a satisfied manner when Susan just went off on her Mother about what they did.
Nobody shows this Parent Trap on TV anymore. My sister and I used to watch this movie so much we could recite it from memory. It's funny how she says Sharon is having a keen time when Sharon is the one having to deal with Vicky.
Contact your local theater and ask if they would invite private showings. They might be open for the idea especially in this day and age. You might have to supply the Blu Ray.

I love this movie and oddly the remake. I generally hate remakes. The only thing wrong with the story is why parents never told the the kids about the other sibling. I would be -s- pissed.
They did a lot more wrong than not telling the kids about the other sibling. Your kids are not property, you don’t divide them like your wedding china. Even if they told me the truth growing up, I’d be just as upset that one of my parents chose to keep my sibling, but not me, then went on with life as if I never existed. That is so wrong on so many different levels. The parents weren’t thinking at all about what was best for their kids, just themselves.
It's NOT "abandonment," it's keeping secrets. Back in the old days, people had this belief that the less people knew the better, and parents and grandparents would lie to their children and grandchildren to protect them. Even today, some of them still do that, and it's terrible!
I've always wondered how she got by at her music lessons without revealing her secret when it's obvious based on the scene when Sharon is with her father and playing the piano (and his surprise about it) that Susan does NOT know how to play.
I pretty much enjoyed this version of the confession a lot more than '98's, since it was a lot more thorough, not as quick, not as emotional, and it was at the dinner table.
The fact that they kept them apart for years without letting them know could actually be traumatic.and whats up with all the other people eho knew but didn't say anything.
'Let's Get Together .. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! .. Two can be .. something dee something'. My daughter - a rather precocious five-year-old.. adores this version of the film. And my Grandparents, both sides of the family, took my parents to see nearly every Hayley Mills film as the 'School Holiday' treat time .. (Dad with his big sister and little bro) and Mum (with her sisters), a Disney 'Adventure Film' or Cartoons and the News Reel tended to fill out the day .. (Dad preferred the Argonauts type adventures, and Mum wanted to see the latest pop music stars); now my daughter takes me by the hand, sits me down in my comfy chair, tells me all about the news, and shows me her favourite films ... OK, I'm a great big softie, but I don't care .. It's my telly and I will blubb if I want too .... ;o)
The grand dad is awesome. Plays absent minded push over most of the movie but when it is time to get serious he lays down the law.

And both legends were taken away from us, within six years of each other- Natasha in 2009 and Maureen in 2015. Both are incredibly missed, indeed.

Except the scenario of divorced parents splitting twins ("you take one and I'll take the other") is utterly silly. It works as drama when you're watching it, but feels like a gimmick afterwards.

I always loved this movie as a kid, then I became a Mom and there is NO WAY I could "bifurcate" my kids and not see one ever again. My soul would die. I get that it's just a program plot, but it bugged me when I watched it as an adult. And yet, I still love it.
Sharon told Susan their parents "bisected" them, each taking one of them.
I like it when Maggie sweeps down the stairs looking like a million bucks. Walks up to Vicki's mother and coos "you must be Vickie" I love it!
I loved the mistaken identity, too! It's also possible she did that on purpose, and I couldn't stop laughing!

I love how you saved up to see it a third time, in the theater! My now 21-year old daughter got the experience of seeing this classic in the theater too, when she was around 5th grade. All the Girl Scout troops in my hometown pooled together and rented out the entire local theater, and they showed this movie to the girls. As a parent chaperone, I think I was even more excited than my daughter!

Sugar Cane, my father tried to teach me how to play chess, but I never understood it and I never got the hang of it, either. I saw it as an entirely different language.

I think "dressing to the nines" part of your comment seems to be a characteristic of upper class Bostonians . I have seen this in two movies done earlier where the setting was Boston. I am thinking of H.M Pelham Esq and the Late George Apply both adaptations of Marchand books brought to the screen.

Kind of depressing reading all these comments written by elders, saying they watched it around when it came out. Time is a precious thing. I first watched it about 2 or 3 years ago on Disney+, Im 15 now and I turn 16 in two months. I love old films, and this one is one of my favorite movies. It makes the 60's seem like an amazing time to be alive, and as a history nerd i dont think that would be the case for a lot of people. However all of the outfits worn in this movie are so adorable, and the architecture and scenery is so amazing to look at. The actors are so fun to watch on screen, and the story is very unique, despite being unrealistic. But hey! This is Disney. I prefer this one over the new one, however both are really good!
As a kid in a small, coastal, California town it was AWESOME!!! Simpler time, although the same problems existed - minus so-called "woke" idjits.

I just remembered he was also Lowel Farquhar, Margaret Drysdale's father, on the "Beverly Hillbillies". He was one of the only people to ever address Granny by her given name of Daisy.
My dad saved Charlie Ruggles life, pulled him out of the way of an oncoming vehicle in New York in the early 1950s. And I agree with you, a wonderful actor!
Watch him in Bringing Up Baby. The slapstick comedy with Hepburn and Cary Grant. Very funny movie.

At least Susan called out her mother in this version. When you're a kid you think it would be so cool to discover a twin and get your parents back together, then you grow up and realize the parents were the most selfish and immature assholes to ever procreate!!! This would absolutely never happen in real life- at the very least, the judge or the grandparents would have cried foul.
EDIT: I am aware that the child welfare system is inherently flawed and children are split apart from each other all the time which is horrendous and wrong. The scenario in this film has nothing to do with the foster system. My point here is that the parents are two educated, financially very well-off people who decided it would be better to simply forget about ever having any sort of relationship with one of their children than risk having to be in the same zip code long enough to hand them over to the other parent when it was their turn. To say nothing of depriving their daughters the experience of growing up with a twin sister to share life with, both the good and the bad. Every. single. adult. in. this. film. failed. these. girls!
So sorry you had that experience. Marriage isn't easy. Its a commitment and a choice. You have to treat your spouse with courtesy and respect. Even when you get angry discuss the problem in private to get a solution. Love is grand but passion doesn't last. Divide up the chores so there's no resentment. Communicate and love and support and discipline your kids together. I wish you well.
Actually I have heard of this in real life. Plus it is very common in the foster care/adoption system. I know from personal experience. Thankfully God brought us to a loving lady who fought EXTREMELY hard to keep us 3 together. And Mom and Dad adopted us! If it wasn't for Mom we either would have been sent back in a month (and we wouldn't have lived much longer) or at best all 3 been split up, even my Identical Twin. They did have us 3 split for a while. So I can see this happening. With one on the east coast and one on the west. They probably thought they would never know it, so it wouldn't be as bad for them as a 6 month split. Of course we know it wouldn't be, but after all this is a movie and they needed a good story plot.
Susan told her mother many kids at camp had the same problems, and did the 6-month split. I don't know if that would work in real life, but I'm sure parents can try.

Saw this with my parents when it came out and I ended up with a crush on Hayley Mills. A few years later at our local community theater the fire company sponsored a movie for we kiddies to enjoy. By the time the title of the movie was passed back to the end of the line, around where I was standing, it had become "Parrot Talk" but it was this film.

I actually surprised at the quality of this clip. I still own/watch the VHS and it is wonderful quality.
That is one thing I have never gotten. For HD to be better and have more pixels, you would not think it would lower the quality any.

@@LisaKoffler I don't think most family court judges would be happy about a split custody arrangement in most cases, even though both parents might agree to it. Children aren't part of the marital property division, to be divvied up like household goods.
I liked both versions of The Parent Trap, but overall I enjoyed the 1998 movie more. The supporting cast was strong, and the characters Martin and Chessy added a lot to the story. Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid were perfectly cast. I loved how naturally they related to "both" daughters. But parenting styles in the late 1990s were far less rigid than they were in the late 1950s. It would be hard to imagine Maureen O'Hara agreeing with one of the twins that something "totally sucks" like Natasha Richardson did. 🤣
Vivian Powell, agreement or no agreement, I was STILL angry that they couldn't share their own children! I agree with you that children aren't "parental property to be divided like household goods" and if they HAD to do that, BOTH versions should have mentioned whether or not they would tell them the truth when they reached adulthood!
You have to take this as a child's fantasy, or a modern version of a fairy tale, not as realism. In real life, this bargain to each take a twin is horrific. To a child, the idea of a secret twin you might run into at camp is a fantasy--as is reuniting divorced parents.

In spite of the "bickering" between the grandparents I think they loved each other in their hearts. I remember in the wedding scene at the end they were there smiling at each other.
I think that's what happens to couples who have been married a long time. Sometimes they get tired of each other's company.
I was 10 years old when I saw this movie and it had such an impact on my life at that time.
I saw both versions, and Susan and Sharon and Hallie and Annie didn't allow fear to stop from doing the right thing by switching places to find out what happened to them and why. Twins who are split up like this is downright rotten, and they had every right and reason to know the truth!

keaneperson, that's a possibility. In the remake, Sammy didn't go into hiding, and he learned the truth about Hallie being a twin. He got to know Annie, and eventually came to like her.
This scene, along when the Father discovers he has had the other one all along, have always been my favorite scenes too :-)
Susan tried to make sense out of what happened, and it's true that sometimes, marriages just plain don't work out. The children shouldn't have to suffer for their parents' mistakes!

The little man from monopoly is based on similar fashion styles from the same time period you dumb ass.

We were watching the other night, and my dad actually said that his theory is that the grandmother was the one who pushed the father away.
Grandma was into the old-fashioned classical music, and her home had a music room. There was no mention of whether or not she "pushed Mitch away." It's possible Maggie just took Sharon and left on her own.
When you think about it, how could Annie not know about Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1998 remake? I was always puzzled about that moment.
Grandma was into nothing but classical music. As a result, Sharon thought Ricky Nelson was Susan's boyfriend, and Susan said she wished he was. It's also possible Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't "popular" in England.
TVs probably weren’t super common in 1961, and Sharon’s family may not have had a TV.

That wouldn't work. The movie itself took place in 1960, and things were very different back in those days. It would have made more sense to do that in the remake.

"I'm sorry mother?" What the hell is she apologizing for? Her mom is the one who was never there. Not so much as a phone call or a card at Christmas or her birthday. Not only that but keeping her from her own twin sister. Wth?! Any woman who can do that doesn't deserve to get to know the child you ignored, in my opinion. This was a good scene. And I agree that if this were in today's world the word lousy would never have come up. I can think of some other choice words to replace it.
I think she apologized because as angry and hurt as she is over what their parents did to them, she still desperately wants a mother that loves her. To be honest the kids were by far the more mature and adult about the whole mess. The adults ran away from their problems and ended up sacrificing their children for their own selfishness.
Susan was apologizing for not letting their mother know sooner. Neither Susan nor Sharon wrote any letters, and I couldn't blame them for that. If it was me and I had a twin sister, I'd say: "Don't get mad, get even! If our parents won't talk to us, why should we talk to them!" After telling the truth, we'd take turns explaining ourselves by saying things like: "We were lied to, deceived, and deprived, so you can't blame us for being angry! That's why we didn't write any letters. We wanted the truth about what happened to us and why. That's why we switched places, so we could meet and get to know the parents we never had." Even though it's against the law to go home to a parent you don't legally belong to, there's NO law against visiting. That's what happened in BOTH versions.
In the 1998 remake, Elizabeth the mother mentioned that the divorce was so emotional that splitting the twins was agreed upon so that they never had to see each other again. Annie and Hallie were younger girls when they met, so it could have been the reason why they were now beginning to be more curious about their parents. With Susan and Sharon it was indeed crueller to not have start letting them know and allowing them to begin communicating with the other.
Age is only a number, because ANYONE who learns the truth about being a twin also wants to know the truth about what happened and why. The parents were cruel in BOTH versions, and wouldn't you be angry if the same thing happened to you?

I was just wondering about whether Annie and Hallie were written as pre-teens on purpose so that they their discovery happens at an earlier age unlike the teens Sharon and Susan who were a bit older.

If you weren’t intentionally separated from your twin, you might have had Vanishing Twin Syndrome in utero. It’s when a pregnancy starts out as twins but one twin stops growing after just a few weeks and seemingly ”vanishes”. If the twin was never spotted on an early ultrasound there is usually no way to 100 % prove it, but it has been proven that surviving twins, even those who lost their twin that early, are often affected psychologically and go through life feeling like something is missing.
If Susan had used modern day language the grandmother would have a heart attack and a stroke right there. The word used would not have been lousy.
What words would she have used if she uses modern day english terms?

This is a very touching scene.
A friend and I watched the remake, and he felt that the girls at some point should have been upset with the parents over their separation.
He breathed in a satisfied manner when Susan just went off on her Mother about what they did.
Nobody shows this Parent Trap on TV anymore. My sister and I used to watch this movie so much we could recite it from memory. It's funny how she says Sharon is having a keen time when Sharon is the one having to deal with Vicky.

One of my fav movies growing up. Now in retrospect, I realize that I based my main red-headed barbie doll who was the mom/me in my games as a child, on the amazing mother here in the Parent Trap. ❤. She was always having to save all of the of the other dolls and had 32 children lol

I love this movie and oddly the remake. I generally hate remakes. The only thing wrong with the story is why parents never told the the kids about the other sibling. I would be -s- pissed.
I was pissed too, and the storyline not saying whether or not they would EVER tell them the truth, which made me even MORE pissed!
They did a lot more wrong than not telling the kids about the other sibling.
Your kids are not property, you don’t divide them like your wedding china.
Even if they told me the truth growing up, I’d be just as upset that one of my parents chose to keep my sibling, but not me, then went on with life as if I never existed.

It's NOT "abandonment," it's keeping secrets. Back in the old days, people had this belief that the less people knew the better, and parents and grandparents would lie to their children and grandchildren to protect them. Even today, some of them still do that, and it's terrible!

I've always wondered how she got by at her music lessons without revealing her secret when it's obvious based on the scene when Sharon is with her father and playing the piano (and his surprise about it) that Susan does NOT know how to play.

I pretty much enjoyed this version of the confession a lot more than '98's, since it was a lot more thorough, not as quick, not as emotional, and it was at the dinner table.

(Dad with his big sister and little bro) and Mum (with her sisters), a Disney 'Adventure Film' or Cartoons and the News Reel tended to fill out the day .. (Dad preferred the Argonauts type adventures, and Mum wanted to see the latest pop music stars); now my daughter takes me by the hand, sits me down in my comfy chair, tells me all about the news, and shows me her favourite films ...
