Is it some hollowness that I sense with the top mount, especially with alu plate?
I understand the design intentions with the super clean and minimalistic look but just straight, smooth sides will make it tricky to handle. It's a chunky, heavy board and it would slip out of fingers whenever you try to move it and pick it up. A simple rounded "rail" or channel on each side would give it some character, make it seem less "barren" and it would help with handling the board without ruining the overall aesthetic.
Speaking of, that hippo "weight" looks a bit cheap and out of place on a slick board like that...
Agree regarding the weight. It doesn't look as good as the piggy's weight.
I actually felt like the alu gasket mount sounded even more hollow/resonant than the top mount, but it definitely had a lot to do with the plate and switch choices, because I didn't really hear any with the fr4 plate and BCPs
Anyway, it seems you don't actually "understand the design intentions" because it's not just a one-off unique board from an unheard of designer - it's part of a collection. When you look at Jacky's other boards (particularly the Piggy, Elephant, and Haitun) the design language is incredibly clear and any change to the side profile would indeed "ruin the overall aesthetic" because it would actually be a big departure from the rest of the lineup. Even the bezel widths are essentially the same (proportionally) as the other boards mentioned. This size of chonker isn't exactly meant to be moved around a lot anyway lol. Regardless, to help ease your concerns I'll tell you about my brass-bottomed Mammoth75 that is both smaller and significantly heavier than the Hippo (5.1kg built). The sides on that actually taper outward and down making it even more awkward to more or pick up than this would be. It's not a problem. Like, at all. A literal non-issue. Is it more difficult to move than a 1.3kg 65%? Yes, obviously. But not a problem. You literally just squeeze a fingertip below the side edge and now you're holding it from the bottom instead of the sides. At least you don't have to worry about smudging a polished brass weight every time you pick this up lol. Anyway the weight design is also quite precisely on par with the rest of the boards in Jacky's line of boards and I think it's perfect
We're all entitled to our personal preferences and you are certainly welcome to having your own but if you don't like the design of the board it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it and it needs to change, it simply means it isn't the board for you. There have been plenty of boards throughout the years that I really really wanted to like but there was maybe one or two design decisions that I couldn't really bring myself to get on board with - so I didn't buy them. There have also been other boards that the one or two things I didn't really like were so minor that I've grown to simply get over them because I like everything else about them so much. I for one have other Jacky boards and love that he has stayed quite consistent in the aesthetics of the board. When you have several of them in your collection they're super fun to show off together. Can't wait to get my hands on a Hippo

4kg not that heavy tbh. I actually expected it to be heavier lol
