Dom, regarding your question about President Putin's use of metaphors and symbolism, I think it is part of the Soviet Heritage that was/ is part of the educational culture. The young Russians I met at university in Vladivostok mock it, but at the same time it is part of their mental culture. It exists. Is "it real"? It is what one can easily believe from time to time. and it does provide a shared cultural psychological language.

Not sure I agree Hitler would have used nuclear weapons had he had them. He had access to chemical weapons and did not use those in those last days in the bunker. Of course, this is merely academic. Whether Putin will use nuclear weapons or not, we can not capitulate to such extortion. Their use would have limited effect on the battlefield, and he knows that in doing so he would be hammering that last coffin nail himself.

One theme of Russian current psyche i have heard which President Putin plays is, "Russia has never attacked anyone. Russia is always a victim in history.. Russia is only playing a defensive positiion. I realize this theme is part of psychological reality now. But how did it get started? Speaking as a small town American, and a transplant to Japan, this is such a curious lense to look at history from. I know a small bit of Russian literature, War and Peace by Tolstoy. So I didn't notice such psychic messaging. Am I mistaken? Were there characters who personalized this posture of being a victim, and non-aggressive? My old psych professor often said that if someone was spending alot of energy proclaiming what secret motives were not motives of the speaker, then this is exactly what haunts the motivation of the person. They will have this ghost in their mind that they are trying to banish by emotional protestation. , they use a psychic behavior of projection on to others, a historical and invalid character smear. .

What did the US and UK do? They opened a second front when they realized that the Russians will win, and they must hurry to divide the European pie. They opened a second front on June 6, 1944, after 5 years of war *(FIVE YEARS, CARL),* they sat out all the time while the Red Army was saving this world on the battlefields. The Red Army destroyed 76% of all German divisions, the rest fell on the so-called allies. Perhaps this truth is not taught in your schools.
Obviously, the words about "not enough" did not refer to the demonstrative destruction of German cities - there the Allies gave their "best".

With the oil and gas and indeed its own arms production and sales, together with a population around 140 M yes, over ‘the largest’ sized country but with its 40 Provinces and natural assets. The population alone shud be self sustaining to have a working economy … of course the Oligarch system exploits the people… but has taken this long for ‘sanctions’ to have effect. I am from the so-called third world - the global south. I standby Putin whole-heartedly. We have never known peace and prosperity at the hands of the so-called West. All we have is a sorry history, full of colonialism, neo-colonialism and slavery. Russia and China helped us fight colonialism. Without Russia and China, we in the global south are finished and we will perish. Putin's speech resonates with me and my lived experience. It is full of nothing but the truth. This quote in particular rings very true - "Their hegemony has a clearly expressed totalitarianism, despotism and apartheid. They crudely divide the world into their vassals, so-called civilised countries, and everyone else, who today's Western racists believe should be listed as barbarians and savages", Putin, 30/09/2022. Westerners have always been squalid and feral racists. Where-ever they have gone in the world they have never got on with anyone. They have left a trail of destruction, wars, colonialism, slavery and suffering. Russia/Putin is our defender. He is our savior. Without him, the West will finish us off through slavery, poverty and extinction. The West only wants to see Anglo-Saxons only on this planet. It has always wanted to do this through colonialism and slavery. Only a full scale nuclear war will prevent this from happening. It will reset things. And I am all for it. Unlike the West, we in the global south are not scared of a nuclear war. We want to see it happen and we hope it will happen. We also hope that it will be a full scale strategic one, not a mini tactical one. We have suffered for far too long at the hands of the West.

I fully agree with everything that Putin said, but thank God that he does *not share your aspirations for an inevitable nuclear war.* Putin is the most peaceful person in the world, who has to do what he must. Your comment looks like a simple provocation.
