How to Get to Ayutthaya from Bangkok: There are many trains traveling everyday between Bangkok and Ayutthaya. Trains from Bangkok leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station) and arrive at Ayutthaya about an hour later. Use this website to check the train schedule: www.dticket.railway.co.th Tickets are only 20 baht. The trains can be very crowded, especially on weekends. I was lucky enough to have a seat on the train to Ayutthaya, but I had to stand for the entire train ride back to Bangkok. Once you get off at the train station in Ayutthaya you'll need to get someone to drive you around, or rent a bike. The ancient ruins are scattered around several areas and it's not exactly walkable. There are plenty of tuktuk drivers waiting outside the train station. They charge 300 baht per hour and take you around to the best spots. I opted for four hours, which was a good amount of time to see quite a lot without feeling rushed. Prepare to be out in the blazing hot sun for several hours. If you’re not interested in taking a train, I would suggest booking a group tour from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. You can find plenty of these available on websites like Trip Advisor, Klook, etc. You’ll get a comfortable, air conditioned ride to and from Ayutthaya, and an experienced guide to show you around the ruins and give historical context. If I were to return to Ayutthaya I would opt for a group tour, but the train ride was a fun experience!
So fun to see the architecture…it amazes me. I had to watch a few times to fully take it in….and then, of course, only an imitation of being there. So appreciative of your sharing the experience!
