Today we are going to compare the Tesla Model Y vs Tesla Model S
The Tesla Model Y is Tesla’s newest car and expected to be their most popular. The Model S was first released in 2012, and not a ton has changed since 2012.
The Model Y is brand new, but it is based 75% on a car that has been out for 3 years, and will eventually have a starting price of around $41,000 when the standard range Model releases next year.
Now the 2020 Tesla Model S starts at $79,990, gets 391 miles of range, and a 0-60 of 3.7 seconds.
Clearly, the Model S is Tesla’s fastest car and has the longest range, but with a difference of around $28,000-$40,000 depending on which trim you buy.
What’s interesting to note in these cars is just how similar they are when it comes to storage locations. In the Model S we have storage in the frunk, hatchback trunk, under storage, and side cubbies. And so does the Model Y.
Now my biggest complaint about the Model Y so far has been the rear visibility.
With Model Y being a taller car, you’ll have more storage space in those same locations, but now let’s get into all the ways the Model S is better than the Model Y. For almost $40,000 or more between base Models, there better be some clear ways the Model S comes out on top.
First up is obvious. The Model S gets a faster 0-60 up to 2.4 seconds in the performance Model vs the Model Y’s 3.5 seconds in the Performance Model. It also goes longer on a charge with up to 391 in the long-range Model compared to the Model Y’s 316 miles.
Next up, the Model S features two screens, with the second placed right where speedometers are typically placed. This screen gives you speed, Autopilot visualizations, general energy usage, extra mapping data, and more options to choose from.
The Model Y features just one screen, but no screen directly in front of you.
Handling in the Model S is much sportier, now this isn’t to say that the Model Y doesn’t handle well. It handles incredibly well and feels sportier than most cars out there, but it’s a big car, and big cars just can’t handle the same as larger cars.
Next up, The Model S features Air Suspension, allowing you to choose between Low, Standard, High, and Very High Suspension.
The Model Y has a standard, fixed suspension with a listed ground clearance of 6.6 inches.
Next up, the Model S features a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable headrest, more physical stalks around the steering wheel, and a HEPA filter for what Tesla calls “bioweapon defense mode”.
On top of these, the Model S rides smoother, and the cabin is overall quieter thanks to that Air suspension.
And lastly, the Model S includes unlimited supercharging for life.
Ways the Model Y is better than the Model S.
While the Model Y only features one screen, the horizontal orientation, and location of the screen being located away from the dash actually make it much easier to see, and access for controls.
Furthermore, on the screen, the Autopilot visualizations are much larger and easier to see on the Model Y than the Model S.
The Model Y features this beautiful panoramic glass roof. Now the Model S used to come with a roof like this but doesn’t in 2020.
The length and width of the Model Y are smaller than the Model S, and it’s a noticeable difference when pulling into tight spots or garages. I find it easier to drive the Model Y for this reason. It’s smaller but doesn’t feel smaller.
On top of this, the added height on the Model Y gives it a lot more cargo space.
The Model Y is easier to get into than the Model S since it is higher off the ground, with higher seats.
The legroom in the Model Y is more spacious.
Last up, The Model S just feels older, and in need of a refresh.
Which car would you choose? Is the extra range, performance, and premium features worth the cost on what I would consider the somewhat outdated Model S?
Or does the lower cost, simplistic interior, glass roof, and cargo space of the Model Y make it the reason to skip the Model S? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Tesla Model S vs Model Y.

Great video. Four weeks ago I traded in my Model S 100D to a Model Y Performance with the 21 inch wheels. After driving Model Y for five days I was very disappointed with the harsh ride quality and the efficiency at 40 degree weather coming from a Model S . I was really hopping that I will like the Model Y unfortunately as much as I liked sitting higher in a Model Y I decided to return my Model Y and go back to a Model S using Tesla 7 day return policy. Tesla so far has been very accommodating and they were able to find in existing inventory 2020 Model S Raven which I should get a delivery this week.

Great to hear they could easily accommodate you! Interesting to hear the switch! I will say the 21 inch wheels are a little harsher than the 20’s or 19’s, but still makes sense. Definitely still a place for model s for a lot of people. Plus you get that awesome range! Congrats on the raven!

  • @Jer_Schmidt
    @Jer_Schmidt 4 года назад +8

I’m trading my S for a Y, but the main reason that’s an upgrade for me is that my S is old (2013). Comparing an early S to a new Tesla, any model would be an upgrade. I still prefer how the S looks, but I feel the Y is a better, more up-to-date design and build (especially the battery pack design). If they were the same price it’d be hard to decide, but the price makes the Y an easy choice.

    • @RyanShawtech

I bought the car with 80k miles. The drive unit was going bad (noisy) when I bought it. That was a common issue on the early ones, and warranty fixed it for free. They upgraded it to a newer drive unit that doesn’t have this problem so it won’t happen again. There were no other power train issues in the next 55k miles.
It developed bubbles in the touchscreen, which didn’t affect the functions, just looked ugly, cost $900 to fix. The only other issue was the TPMS throwing a code. It still worked, just kept giving me an error pop up. Service upgraded that to a newer one for free. Then, just before trading in the car at ~135k miles, the touchscreen started to develop a yellow border. I didn’t ever fix that.
In my opinion that’s not terrible for a car of this age; only $900 spent on service in 2.5 years/55k miles.

Yes. I miss the S, but I don’t regret the trade. I have almost 30k miles on the Y already, it’s a solid car. It’s a more practical shape/size and is better on paper (charging speed, autopilot, etc), but it’s missing some…class? It feels more like “just a car” while the S felt more special. Hard to quantify what I mean by that… but overall I’m very happy with it.

I hope the new model S will have the same vibe as their new roadster but then with 4 doors, but without losing all functionality.
In the past the model S had to be a jack of all trades, since besides the old roadster it was their only model. Now if you want 7 people in one car, you can buy the model X or Y.
Without the need to be a jack of all trades they can make it the car that not only preforms like a flagship, but also a car that looks like one, a poster worthy car that turns heads, just like what the current model S did a decade ago. A car that makes people interested in the brand, like the S class does for Mercedes.

unlimited supercharging is gone now, on both the Model S and X! and with my insurance, the Model Y is $50 less per month than the Model S. that could be a wash for supercharging cost.

I think the Model S is the best Tesla model they offer period and heres why.
Model X is good, but personally 1) is expensive and 2) it kinda have a mom minivan vibe to it in my own opinion.
Cybertruck although it looks unique and in my own opinion awesome, I am not too sure about the interior and the options. Like if the Cybertruck is going to have only one interior and exterior color option that will absolutely suck. Like imagine if all the Cybertruck where the same. That would suck soo bad. But, we have to see.
Model 3 personally I don't like the Model 3 when I first drove it. I know it suppose to be the most affordable of all the Tesla Model. But for the price, I could buy better things for the quality. Like I never compare it to BMW and Audi. I always compare it to a Toyota or Volkswagen. Of all the models Tesla offer, the Model 3 is the one I least like.
Model Y have a special place. I think its better built than the 3, and I think its better overall than the 3 in other aspect as well. Idk why but the construction of the Y is better than the 3, especially interior.
Now for the Model S. Here are the reasons:
-Model S is the flagship model that started it all
    -Better interior built
-Have same tech as in the Model X still
-Most beautiful design of all the Tesla Model. Elegant and Curvy.
-Most important of all: of all the Tesla model (except for the Model X), it is the best car to transition from a traditional car into the Electric car world and into Tesla.
Personally, that is the biggest seller in my own opinion to why you should get the Model S. Its less dramatic and less of a big transition than Model Y/3. In my case, I rather see it cheap to use just one big screen for everything rather than to have a few buttons and a gauge cluster.

Put simply, the Model-S is just way out of my price-range. I am saving hard to be able to (just barely) afford a Model-Y (when they eventually become available in the UK). Plus my wife has hip problems, so getting in and out of such a low car as the Model-S would also rule it out as we need a vehicle with the extra height, even taking cost out of the picture.

I got a used Model S 2016 with 70D battery for $41k from Telsa CPO with 4 year bumper to bumper warranty and lifetime unlimited supercharging. I've had it for a year and logged 15,000 miles thus far and love it. I would like the taller aspect of the Model Y and the faster charging and potentially FSD (mine has AP1 only) but I have to really ask myself, is that worth an extra $20,000? I would miss the free supercharging, but I would like faster charging and nearly 100 miles more range. I think the ride quality is better in the S, overall. I put a pedal tuner in mine and it accelerates more like a performance version now.

    • @JohnWDavisMedia
      @JohnWDavisMedia 4 года назад

@@Jimbojam Thank you for sharing. I feel like the free supercharging is a game changer if you have easy access to super charging. But then I like the idea of having faster charging in the Y and 3. I think it's going to come down to budget for me. How much I feel comfortable spending.

    • @Jimbojam
      @Jimbojam 4 года назад

@@JohnWDavisMedia that is exactly where I am at. Interesting thing to consider: if you get the Y, you will have 316 miles range, versus what I have on my 70D, which is 225. if I had that extra 85 miles on my battery size I would not need to stop at superchargers, most of the time. The new model S gets 400 miles on a charge, but that car is $80k start price. I think some other things to consider are, how tall are you? I am 6ft-1" and getting in and out of my Model S is not "easy" like it would be on the X or Y. have you driven a Model S? I don't think you can test drive a Model Y yet, especially with the virus happening. I really want to try one out first- that will tell me a lot. I watched all of Sany Munro's teardown videos of the model Y and he said it's the only EV he has ever recommended and a much better engineered car than the Model 3. I put a roof rack and space case and tow hitch on my Model S, so it is very utilitarian. Being able to drive across the country for free with supercharging is pretty amazing. The model Y is much more efficient than the Model S and charges much faster, those are notable conveniences, for sure. if you haven't already, check out ev-cpo.com/hunter/ to look at used Tesla inventory. at this moment, the link doesnt work for some reason, but I have been looking there for months and think it's an amazing website. it might be back up soon. good luck and feel free to reply if you have questions or want to talk more about it. Tesla owners LOVE to talk about these amazing cars! :D

Master Zebulon So, in all fairness, I had a 2014 S and now I have a 2020 Y. And even though I actually had autopilot on my S, the advancement in technology from one car to the other is huge. But apart from that: I love getting into and out of the Y. I have the seat set high and I just ease into the seat - with the S there was work involved because the seat was so low. The visibility from the Y is like no other car - front windshield and the panoramic roof. For me also, the car is right sized - the S is a little bulky. The Y is considerably larger than the 3 (my wife drives one of those) but it’s obviously smaller than the S. And I have the performance Y, so it really goes. The cargo space is very useful. If I need to haul something like a large filing cabinet or a Christmas tree, I can do it. In the S, the car was larger, but the space was not as functional. The Y is higher off the road and the engineering, in terms of traction, is infinitely better. I have a feeling that driving in the snow will be hugely improved. I guess a lot of what I am describing is a well engineered SUV versus a large, large “luxury car.” But the Y to me doesn’t lack in “luxury.” The control panel, developed for the 3, and transferred to the Y, is genius. I loved the clean look of the 3 and now I have it in the Y. (I don’t miss the double screen of the S.)
I guess I will stop here. I am enjoying having one of the very first Ys off the assembly line (VIN 000381). In a few years, “everyone” will have one, but for now, it’s a pretty unique car, and I love it!

I think that you are comparing apples to oranges. Both the Model S and Model X are considered premium luxury models, while the Model 3 and Model Y are considered their economy models. The Model Y is not really an SUV, but more a CUV. Even in 2023, the Model S is much more desirable EV. You seem to push things that you possess, both in Tesla's and now the Model Y. Please try and be more open since there are now many new cars from various brands which out do the Tesla models in regards to pricing and features. But I would have to say that Tesla's charging network is still number 1. But now with the government expansion of public DC fast chargers, we will need to see if the CCS system can stay in front of all the new car sales. Thank you.
