  • Walking the lanes of a grocery store can be its own form of travel, especially when you’re in a grocery store with foods from outside your culture. But there is always the looming question of what to buy. I reached out to my friend Jeanelle Castro, who was born in the Philippines, to share with us her top picks of items to buy and, most importantly, how to use them.

    I did not realise how much a big deal vinegar is to Filipino cuisine until I lived abroad. Just got home from an Asian store with a bottle of Datu Puti, the 4th one this year and I just cook for myself!

    For a few years while living in the Chicago area I had a Filipino coworker/roommate, and while I had fun trying Filipino food it intensified when my roommate’s mother came to stay with us for a few months. Her mother had had a restaurant in the Philippines, and her food was off the charts delicious. Now I so hungry for that food. Awesome memories, Beryl!

      Did your apartment have the filipino “smell” that stayed for a few days after your roommate’s mother left? When I cook filipino food at home, the smell stays for a while, and I am VERY homesick, because i think, “OH. Now it smells like home”

      ​@@bokchoy9632 designing for packaging and fashion are two very different disciplines and are dealt with very differently. Seeing as how you are comparing very different products with very different markets means you have no idea about what you are talking about.
      I do agree to some extent that some packaging designs might come off as cheesy or outdated compared to their international counterparts but bear in mind that these designs were made to cater to what Filipinos gravitate towards to. Big, bright and clear names often make products stand out in a grocery aisle where similar looking products are grouped...grabbing the attention of the buyer is the most important thing when it comes to packaging design. What good does a "high end" design when it cannot call attention to itself in a crowded space? If it doesn't generate purchases, it doesn't fulfill it's purpose...
      this is just one example of how packaging design works, there is a time an place for more aesthetically pleasing designs just as loud, obnoxious and colorful ones have theirs. It will always depend on how the product should be perceived as....would you buy Butter if it was packaged like a Perfume? Or would you buy Infant's milk it if was designed like a Protein Shake?

    I am a filipino raised in the States, but for some reason, my parents didn’t “teach” us to cook. I remember being with my mom in an Asian market and seeing most of these products, growing up with the dishes mentioned. Beryl, you are now officially more filipino than I am.

      thats what I noticed about Filipinos living in US, they barely teach the culture ,local dialect and heritage from where they came from. Compared to other asian or foreign like chinese. They speak fluent chinese even theyre born in the US.

      ​@@kriscubero6778While I get it and I don't blame them to a certain extent as a lot of Filipinos or some asians in general have some inferiority complex to the west. Not knowing the language and culture if you ever go back to your ancestral homeland will definitely have way more of a disconnect even if people here do speak English. Learning the native languages is still more immersive. To be frank, being multilingual no matter what language helps a lot.

      @@naknampoochoutlaw641 exactly!! I didn’t get it. Because one of the things I was told when I did actually visit my family in the Philippines (I was 9 at the time), was, “you don’t know your traditions.” And then I re-visit as an adult, I was frowned upon for not knowing Tagalog.

      @@Martin-yh7vi In my case, specifically my half-German half-sister, she never learned any Filipino (Visayan/Cebuano) because my stepfather didn't want her to have difficulties in her language capabilities (though I don't know how much that is true scientifically and even research says knowing multiple languages can help in brain-related functions outside language)

    This is fantastic! More please, make it a series with other cultures - I live in Leicester, one of the most multicultural cities in the UK and there are *so* *many* different supermarkets here and I do go in but half the time I don't know what things are. It would be so good to get a leg up on different cuisines! I don't think we've got a specifically Filipino store (if I'm wrong, someone, *please* tell me) but we do have more generic 'asian' supermarkets that cover multiple cuisines so might get Filipino ingredients there - will keep an eye out.       I have found some good guides online alongside Beryl's! Maangchi has some for Korean food and The Woks of Life for Chinese food. Also on RUclips I like Chinese Cooking Demystified.
      I am in East Anglia now but used to live near Exeter, when I was at college I used to frequent the huge Asian supermarkets, Exeter Uni has a large East Asian population so there is big demand.
      I used to, and still do grab some wildcards that I am clueless about, as well as the educated guesses and familiar things. Whenever I go to larger cities I try to find foreign cuisine whether its supermarkets/grocery and/or cafes and restaurants. Most recently ate at Kasa & Kin which is Filipino food in London when I went to see Busted, I have made Filipino food at home a handful of times but it is nice to see what you are aiming for 😅 and to try Halo-Halo without buying all the jars.
      Is there anything in particular that you are curious about? Like a specific cuisine or ingredient that takes your fancy?
      Of my wildcards the only things in over 15 years of doing this I havent liked were a "pineapple cake" that was more gelatinous and solid, and a tinned congee. But I am not really fussy at all.

    This was the best! I've been making Filipino foods in honor of my amazing oncologist who's from the Philippines. I was happy to see much of what I chose was recommend by Jeanelle. I guess I'm on the right track! I veganize everything but so far I think I've done a good job. The food is delicious. Filipino cuisine is so underrated. I'm not only having fun making it, we're all enjoying eating it! Thanks to both of you for this video. Looking forward to the next one

      @myigissecretnowhihi Thanks! I'll look.I have a very well stocked pantry! I always have lumpia wraps in my fridge. I've been fighting an incurable cancer for 4 years. My diet is part of that fight. I know a plant based diet can't cure cancer but I do feel that it's helped me to get to where I am. I was expected to die and I haven't. I think in part because of how I fuel my body! I look forward to trying something new. Thank you

      @myigissecretnowhihi Thank you. It’s actually done a lot of good. I eat such a nutrient dense diet that even right after chemo I have more energy than I should have. Overall I’ve defied expectations. I know it’s my plant based diet which has helped me to do that. It’s part of a larger plan and every aspect of the plan has worked together to keep me as well as possible while I fight this ugly disease. When I was told it was incurable I said that’s not going to work for me. I researched a lot and here I am eating plant based and doing better than expected

      The combination of scoops of cheese, ube, and vanilla on a cone taste amazing. They are common flavours peddled by Sorbetes or ice cream cart vendor that goes around the streets of Manila. You can look it up: "sorbetes cart".

    Love this. In journalism school, a million years ago, I needed a local angle on an international story. I chose a local Filipino grocery store of course and snacked on chicharrones with hot pepper vinegar. Love your channel. This is what I should have done for my life’s work.     There's only a handful of Filipino grocery stores where I live (Switzerland), so Beryl is lucky she has access in New York! Those flavored vinegars sound so interesting to punch up recipes.
    I remember that similar "Let's Go Grocery Shopping Together!" video. It was such a fun and heartwarming concept. I wish there was a way to see all the submissions we sent that didn't make the cut, like in a community post or google drive.

      We (Filipinos) love adding sour/tangy flavors to rich and savory dishes, and spiced/flavored vinegars go sooo well with barbecued or fried meats.

    I learned so much when Beryl went to the Indian and Russian grocery stores and this was a great episode. Maybe some of the African cuisines? Or maybe a Nordic/Scandi episode?

      Tip for Scandi, Sweden they sell squash/dilute/cordial in what Americans call juice boxes, what we call juice cartons. Dont make the mistake I did 🤣 most intense delicious watermelon and raspberry juice ever then I couldnt sleep due to the intense sugar rush 🤣

    Nagaraya nuts (roasted peanuts coated in a crunchy shell) would've been a good snack for you to pick up too! The adobo and spicy ones were my favorites but sadly I don't live anywhere near a Filipino grocery anymore.

    Very cool concept!❤ I can't help wondering about how to shop in Arabic grocery store and which items to recommend to buy.
    My local home area has a large arabic immigrant population which there's a lot of small arabic grocery businesses there.
    I would love to see you try the shopping in Arabic grocery store idea! 👀

    I think it's a SE Asian thing with the fermented shrimp/krill/fish. In Malaysia we have budu and belacan. Thailand as well and Indonesian. And we put it in most of our dishes 😂

      I have tried a lot of these things on the channel and I linked to those videos but I can def film a short perhaps with the ready made items! I used the frozen marinated meat and made a breakfast dish like Jeanelle rec the other night just personally and it was awesome

    That shrimp paste mix with lemon and chili is a dip for steamed veges like steam okra, eggplant, sweet potato tops, water spinach etc. And that ube everything is luxurious. I tried harvesting ube that my aunt planted back in my island and they taste bland when steamed but yum when in deserts.

    She missed the MOST essential item you get at Filipino stores and that dried mango for the ride home. Filipino dried mangos just taste so much better than everywhere else.

    Ahh! This brings me back. I used to take the 7 out to Woodside to shop at Phil-Am back in college to get Ensaymada and some other Pinoy necessities for my cooking.
    I remember when I first saw the poster for the Jollibee, I counted down the days, and went on opening day. The line wrapped around multiple blocks and there was no way to even get in the door before closing time, so I left and went back a few days later. 😅

    Man I’ve really been sleeping on Filipino food. I’m very familiar with various Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai food and even Malaysian and Indonesian food but for some reason haven’t sought out any Filipino cuisine. This video has convinced me to change that.

      There are a ton of food similarities in the Philippines and in South East Asia and East Asia. We eat anything with rice just different preparations. We have a variety of noodles too from noodle soup to dry using different types of noodles. Chinese cuisine is what makes up around 1/4 of Filipino cuisine from noodles, siomai, siopao, stir fried vegetables, rice cakes, fish cakes, fried rice, lumpia, balut and so on w/c is a common everyday meal/food. Sushi has a Filipino counterpart w/c is the Kilawen, fresh fish soaked in vinegar. We also have different kinds of dried fish and smoked meat. So if you have tried food in those countries, you already had a taste of Filipino cuisine. Tho, one thing that is unique to us is the Sinigang (sour meat/fish/shrimp soup with vegetables using tamarind) which I think you can't find in other Asian countries.     Purefoods corned beef is a product of San Miguel so I think it is a Filipino brand. Maybe they just put Australia there because of the meat or for other reasons.

    Eyyyy. Mang Tomas pairs well with lechon! Like gravy? Leftover roast pork is stewed with garlic, onion, pepper, lime soda and Mang Tomas. Yum!

      Mang Tomas is a commercial version of the lechon sauce which was originally made from pork liver, vinegar, bread crumbs and spices.

      There are 2 kinds of mang tomas The all-purpose sauce is not that good with lechon. The other one is the lechon sauce which is better for everything than the all purpose one hahaha

    Love this vid, when I visit my mom in Queens, I live in California, I love making my way to Phil-Am to shop ingredients so she can cook my favorite Flip food.     When I worked in a big hotel in Philadelphia, one of my coworkers took me to Chinatown there and told me all about the markets there. She advised me where to go and which stores to avoid. It was the first time I saw fresh waterchesnuts. That was 40 years ago! Now I live in Idaho and there really only an Asian market and a bunch of Mexican markets. I do really wish there's a better selection. I always laugh when you say "pick this up at your local Filipino grocery "! Amazon has been a huge part of my shopping since I moved here. Thank you for your great videos.

      My family moved from Idaho to the DC area in 1981, so we had the reverse experience. My mother and I would go to little "ethnic" markets and explore, finding things to try. A guide would have been so welcome.

    Mang Tomas started with "lechon" sauce as their original product. But we just used it to dip non lechon dishes, so it is now All Purpose sauce there.

    Kopiko maybe Indonesian, but well loved by Filipinos too.
    I also love Sweet Corn, one of my favorite snacks alongside Snaku and Chippy.
    Dried Mangos is the best, I also love dried green mangos!!!
    Tocino and Beef tapa are the best marinated meats for me. I agree with you Beryl, with corned beef. Argentina and Purefoods are the best brands for me.
    I also crave for a tomato based sardines and I usually love the Red Ligo.

    I've said this before in another video, but I just wanna talk about my shopping experience in my community. Where I live (around the Toronto, ON Canada area), it's so culturally diverse that so-called "ethnic" foods are available EVERYWHERE in big-box stores. Not to mention major-chain grocery stores that specifically cater to immigrant communities. At my local Walmart (WALMART!!!), I can buy kare-kare soup base, kalamansi soda, and not just ube halaya, but my FAVORITE brand of ube halaya. If what I'm looking for isn't there, then I can just go to the other major superstore about five minutes away. And that's just for Filipino food! This is true if I feel like doing Jamaican, Greek, Korean, Northern Indian, or Salvadorian grocery hauls, etc. (Though to be honest, I just usually get a mix of everything lol.) The price of this convenience? There are no small mom-and-pop shops ANYWHERE. They wouldn't be able to compete or survive.

      The "big two" supermarkets in Aust also carry Asian foods, but alas they are cheapskates & get it made locally under "home brand" labels and it generally tastes terrible. I had an Asian grocery warehouse & stores & the chains were always coming to see what was selling & at what price. Luckily most of my customers were immigrants and wanted the genuine items as did many chefs, so they kept me in business for 26 years, Now I am living in Philippines and have access to all i need and a variety of brands that are made here. I noticed a few on shelves Beryl was around, are not genuine PH brands and some are flavoured for non local taste.

    Those sardines in tomato sauce were my favorite when I was a kid. I can never get tired of them until my depression worsen. I was already picky when it comes to fish and it made it worse. When before I love it, there was a time I can't stand its smell, too fishy for me all of a sudden. Now, I'm good with it again. It's lovely with a squeeze of few kalamansi

    It's always fun exploring ethnic grocery stores, bringing home new ingredients and learning about the food. In produce departements also always fun to see a WTF is that buying some going home looking it up and finding recipies for it and figuring out what to pair it with.

    Honestly, international grocery stores are the BEST places to shop! There’s so many inexpensive options, especially herbs and spices. We have a few international grocery stores here in the Halifax NS area, and they really are worth visiting.

    Those corned beef brands like Purefoods, Argentina, Delimondo are all Philippine brands but yes they are all made in brazil/argentina, Philippines doesn’t have many cow pastures. However, the corned beef offered by these brands are “Filipino style” with bigger chunks compared to the usual corned beef which are very finely shredded. Having bigger chunks/shreds means it’s less mushy and you can also fry it til it’s crispy if you like.

    I'll list some of the alternatives to what you bought:
    Instead of Bihon(rice), Sotanghon(mung bean) is superior. They are very common in all Filipino/Hawaiian stores.
    Unless of course you prefer Bihon.
    A superior choise for vinegar would be "Sukang Irok"/"Sukang Batangas"(coconut vinegar) or Nipa Vinegar or Kaong Vinegar. Some show up from time to time at Filipino/Hawaiian stores.
    Don't use the Mama Sita's mix if possible. The additives are not healthy.
    If you want a tastier and healthier Sinigang use only Tamarind flowers/leaf shoots/unripe pods, Kamias(bilimbi) fruit, Balimbing(star fruit) or your favorite vinegar. Some Filipino/Hawaiian stores sell them but they are rare.
    Don't buy regular "Pancit Canton"(wheat noodles).
    Choose "Pancit Miki Lucban"/"Miki Lucban". These are chewier and remains chewy even when cooked. They are also slightly seasoned with a sweet spiced soy sauce.
    They are colored Brown.
    They are somewhat rare but some show up on Filipino/Hawaiian stores.
    Ube
    If possible research Ube pictures from a Philippine website because what you bought in your Ube video is NOT Ube. Instead, you bought an inferior purple sweet potato.
    Yams and Sweet potatos are very much different in all ways. (Shape, size, flavour, texture etc.)
    Cooked sweet potatoes of any variety have a grainy texture of overriped Apples or Date fruits.
    Ube is comparatively chewier and stickier.
    Taste and aroma is unique that I really can't explain it here. Sorry.
    For chili peppers;
    "Siling Labuyo". They are the hottest naturally occurring pepper in the world.
    Colored Dull Red to Brown and Green.
    Small and stuby in size/shape 2-3cm long.
    Some stores will attempt to sell you the much weaker "Thai Bird's eye Chilli"(vibrant red, longer) so be careful.
    Also look for "Siling Pangsigang"/"Siling Haba" for your soup and stew recipes.
    Glossy yellow green 10-15cm long
    Both are usually very common in Filipino/Hawaiian stores.
    For sugars;
    "Muscovado"(unrefined sugar cane sugar) and "Panutsa"(palm sugar)
    Common in Filipino/Hawaiian stores.
    For cheese;
    "Queso de Bola"(Spanish Edam)
    Mild and nutty in flavor. Medium hardness.
    Spherical and covered in red wax 15-30 cm diameter.
    Used for Snacks, sandwiches and desserts.
    Common in Filipino/Hawaiian stores
    Additional flavourants/aromatics;
    "Pandan leaves" should occasionally pop up in Hawaiian stores but rarely in Filipino stores.
    Traditional flavourant/aromatic for Cooked Rice, Bibingka(Cassava variety) etc.
    Usually found in Hawaiian stores
    Saff flowers for Traditional Porridge recipes.
    McCormick sells them.
    Snacks;
    I prefer baked goods like;
    "Spanish bread"(traditional Tagalog breakfast sweet roll)
    "Bicho-bicho"(traditional doughnut sold usually at 3:00 pm)
    I just bake them because all foreign Filipino bakeries I've been too just makes them wrong.
    For coffee;
    "Kapeng Barako"/"Kapeng Batangas"
    Not common in the U.S. bit may occasionally be found in Filipino stores.
    Beer;
    San Miguel brand is pretty common in the Filipino/Hawaiian stores.
    I kept reffering to Hawaiian stores because more than half of the population of modern Hawaii are Filipino immigrants. Mostly from the Kapampangan and Ilocano ancestry.

    ok, ok, I'm not Filipino, but I have in laws that are first gen immigrants, and I live and die by their beef nilaga. It's been ages since I've had it (we live too far away now), but you NEED some beef nilaga! They'd make a big stockpot of it, and I'd just ladle a bunch over rice and be in heaven. Other dishes I'd especially suggest include: Chicken pastel, crispy pata is ALWAYS a good time, humba, mechado, pinakbet, bulalo, dinuguan, champorado, tokwa at baboy . . . there's so much good stuff! I'd be here all day listing them all if I named all of my favorites

    Tip for the bagoong as a condiment. Sautee it with garlic and onions and some sugar. It should reduce the strong fermented taste to a minimum and what’s left is an umami bomb.

    I love Delimondo but before it made it made its debut in the market, Palm was my go-to brand. Even though it’s Brazilian, the flavor is so Pinoy esecially if you cook it with garlic, onions, tomatoes and a little patis. And speaking of fish sauce, I actually prefer Thai brands like Tiparos. 😅
