S3 is honestly my favorite! The three perspectives, the four True runes you get to use, getting to play as a dog, the most mature of the storylines, and two Vikis!!
When it comes to the plot, 2 was undoubtedly the most mature. The topic of war and the tragedy of this event was wonderfully presented from many perspectives.
Fun fact: Suikoden was based on the classic Chinese novel, The Water Margin, where, yes, the main protagonist Jiang Song must find and recruit 108 stars of destiny to build up his base, Liangshan Marsh, including bandits, generals, a guy who can run really fast, a doctor, a horse doctor, a scribe, an artisan, a shipwright, several navigators, and a blacksmith
Suikoden 3 has one of all time best character designs in a game. I've never seen anyone complain about the battle system. Story was good, and the trinity sight really got you to know a bloated cast. S4, ugh, random battles every few seconds, battle system from the dark ages. It just screams low budget and while low budget doesn't mean bad there was whiff from Konami that we don't care if its bad. I wasn't a fan of 5 that much, just little things. Loading screens for everything, even entering a house in a town. The art was a big step back from 3.
Yeah. I'm not a hater of IV but if you played these games as they were relapsed no way IV wouldn't be at the bottom. I remember some where jarred by many of the new aspects of III, but it was the first 3D game. IMO I can't see how a fan could not like that game as it concludes things that started in II.
4 was my least favorite of the 1-5. While three was a bit frustrating. I didn't play the portable or the tactics so for me they don't matter. I could flip a quarter between one and two then the rest of the order would be, 5, 3, 4 for me of best to worst in series. I dont disagree with David too often on his thoughts but here my feelings differ.
Eiyuden Chronicle is the first Kickstarter I've ever backed, so here's hoping for a good spiritual successor the same way Bloodstained was for the Igavania subgenre of Castlevania games.
First kickstarter I've ever backed. I LOVED Suikoden 1 and 2. Haven't even had anything to do with JRPG's for 10-15 years probably until some channels like David's got me nostalgic for them.
Since being introduced to this series by watching the let’s play of the first two on your channel I have been loving the story of this series. I keep hoping you’ll do a let’s play of part 5, it has been so much fun, and another fantastic story.
Suikoden 2 have a better storyline but suikoden 5 have a better gameplay mechanics. Both are great game. what make suikoden series a gem is the storyline and world building its like you are reading a book.
For me I've never played the spin offs, Suikoden Tactics, and the ones for the DS and psp. I'm kind of amazed to see Suikoden 3 at last place. I'd imagine at least the spin offs would be lower. But again I haven't played them. I will play the psp version eventually though as it has a translation and I hear it's pretty good. 5. Suikoden IV - It's kind of tough, I played through it and beat it once, I remember liking it, but honestly I don't remember much about it other than being so happy the battle system wasn't like 3. And that the voice acting felt kind of slow or off, and the ships being kind of annoying. But over all I still enjoyed my time with it. I'll have to give it a replay. 4. Suikoden III - I actually really like the story and the characters, the set pieces too. And that opening animation is still god like to this day. I didn't mind the multiple view points. I just found it slightly annoying like most games that switch between protags, where I'm super invested in what's going to happen, but I can't continue with that, and must play someone else instead. The only thing keeping it from being number 3 for me personally is the god awful battle system. I can't stand it, and is certainly the worst in the series. 3. Suikoden V - I'm actually playing this right now, the story and characters are quite fun. Battle system isn't annoying though the transitions entering and exiting battles can be a bit obnoxious. I haven't actually beat this game just yet. When I got it originally, I got to a point where I needed 3 different parties similar to Luca Blight, and only leveled my favorites. So I died, and I went back and leveled a bunch, got past it and my game froze. So I kind of gave up. Besides the battle transitions being a little time consuming, it feels like you need a guide constantly while playing it. It's so easy to miss stars of destiny, and some choices can simply lock characters out. I'm not the biggest fan of the war battles, they seem a bit chaotic and hard to keep track of at times. It's also probably longer than every other Suikoden combined...okay maybe not but it's long! I'm fairly confident though, that this is deserving of the number 3 spot regardless of the small gripes. 2. Suikoden - It's the original, the characters are fun, the battles are lightning fast and don't waste my time too much. The game can be breezed through pretty quickly. And getting the 108 stars of destiny isn't too difficult. Just a super solid, and quick rpg to beat. It may not have the deepest story of the franchise, but I don't have many negatives to say about it. 1. Suikoden II - Yup, I don't think this one can be topped. Characters are probably the best in the series, with one of the best villains in rpgs in general. The story is master class. Combat is short and sweet. The 2D sprites imo are also top notch. Music imo is probably the best in the series as well. It's longer than the first but still has a comfortable length. The war battles to me are the best in the series. It also has the best home base. And you can even go see the original Protagonist and fight with him. I've actually said that this is my favorite game on the original PS1, and I think that it still holds up.
i finally have been playing suikoden 2 for my first time. totally an amazing game. i hope to play the fifth someday. ill probably end up playing the first game when the remaster comes out.
5 is 3d graphic, but the detail is bad imo. You can see many merchant standing beside a pole with the shop sign, like at nirva island, port spinach, estrise, etc. Also S5 doesnt have weapon rune system. S2 was best for me although it has so many bugs. Edit: if you're using psx emulator, someone already make [bug fixed patch] version you can enjoy.
I dunno if you've done one of these videos for Wild Arms, but i'd love to see one for that series if you haven't already done one. I've always wanted to get into that series but I don't know which of the games are good.
Tierkreis notwithstanding, I feel like Suikoden 3 being at the bottom of the list is an unpopular opinion, but I agree whole heartedly. I pretty well agree with the rest of the listing, although I feel playing Suikoden 1 & 2 one after another is the best way to experience them and are my favorite. Suikoden 5 is good, but I hated how I pretty well needed a walkthrough on my lap in order to find all the Stars, although I really do need to play through 5 again. Also can't wait for Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundered Heroes, the spiritual successor of Suikoden! Hoping it's release will spark interest in the series again, and maybe it'll prompt Konami to release a lazy collection port of this series.
The success of the Eiyuden Kickstarter should have told Konami all they need to know about the value of Suikoden and I hoped we'd see a reaction from them but alas, we saw no response from Konami. I still believe at this point our only hope of seeing this series again in the future is if Konami lets other companies develop games with their IP's. It is really unfortunate we still dont know what Konami is really doing.
Definitely one of my top favorite series of all time~ My number one spot is always flip-flopping between 2 and 5. Part of me thinks 1 and 2 should always be bundled together since their stories take place pretty much back-to-back, and when I think about it that way, 1 and 2 together beat out 5 on my list~ Special mention to the opening theme of Suikoden 3, Exceeding Love. When I first got 3, I couldn't play it for the first few hours because I kept replaying the opening just to hear that song again XD
Just a shout-out to anyone interested in the series as I was: you can skip the brutal price tag on II through the Playstation Store on PS3. I, III and IV are on there too. :)
The thing that really annoys me about this series is that after so many games we never really got answers on the Kingdom of Harmonia even though they are the overall antagonist of the franchise.
They built Harmonia from the 1st game up, even brougth probably the most powerful man on earth in to the mix: Hikusaak. We know, how he looked when he was younger (Luc, Sasarai) but he was never shown. The battle against Hikusaak would have been the pinnacle of the series, but sadly, it never came to it.
Yeah Tierkris was a piece of shit. It felt like every second boss fight was an unwinnable one too, and then the next boss fight you would actually fight the boss.
One of my favorite series. I always try to play through 1 and 2 once a year. While we might not get another game in the series, Eiyuden Chronicles looks to carry on as a spiritual successor.
I'm surprised to hear the 4 is considered controversial. Most of my memories are of 2 & 4, must have replayed those the most. So glad we're getting a re-master, it's a day one purchase from me ❤
I haven't played all 7 just V but I guess I played the best one. Love the roster of stars there including Josephine. Nicely animated cutscenes and good music.
Suikoden 4 is the only one in the series I never beat because of the ship. That one is my #7 because of it. Personally I liked 3 letting you play the scenes over and over.
Woah I did not expect Suikoden 3 to be below the spinoffs. It was my first Suikoden game so I'm a bit nostalgic for it but I can respect your opinion. I tend to go back and forth between 2 and 5 for my #1 spot. My current list would be 1. Suikoden 2 2.Suikoden 5 3.Suikoden 1 4.Suikoden 3 5.Suikoden 4 6. Suikoden Tactics 7. Suikoden Tierkreis
Suikoden 3 is easily one of my favorite rpgs, with 5 not too far behind. I did play both just last year as well. I like the combat system and the animations, but wish there was more of a challenge. I did appreciate the treasure bosses at least. Then magic does so much damage that you only need one or two spell casters. I also like the trinity system for allowing you to get to know more of the characters and see their interactions with their groups, instead of having the same regulars through most the game. Yes, I even liked Thomas's chapters for what they were. Suikoden 5 is an even easier game with boss bottles often being over very quickly. I also feel like the skill system is much more limited in 3. The animations and UI also seemed like a step backwards. That being said, there's lots of fun characters and mini games to be had here.
Regarding the rarity of Suikoden II, that might change eventually next year if the announcement of the Suikoden I & II remaster on this year's Tokyo Game Show is anything to go by.
As I look forward to the remasters, I have been replaying Suikoden V and then I stumble on this. Your ranking is pretty much exactly mine, especially the #1, #2, and #3 spots XD
I *hated* Suikoden Tactics with its unintentionally funny fish monster transformations and especially its creepy eyeless NPCs. Seriously, having to look at those freaky things completely ruined the game for me. Completely agree that II and V are the best games in the series.
Suikoden I is the best - The soundtrack is superior in every way to the second (They’re only maybe two tracks that even approach the brilliant of the first which are Rokkaku and the opening prologue theme)
Totally disagree, I found the ost of 2 completely superior to the ost of 1. And do not let me start on the battle music themes, because Suikoden 1 falls very short there compared to every other game in the franchise.
@@SeventhheavenDK That opinion would be wrong. Objectively. Factually. Not even debatable. 2 has a few great tracks - Reminiscence, the opening movie, and Rokkaku are by far the 3 standouts. But most are pretty mediocre, esp the town themes. The instrumentation is nowhere near as lush as the first game and the melodies far less memorable and are far simpler. The other better tracks in the soundtracks are all tracks that are revisions of melodies found in the first game. Suikoden 1 doesn't have a single bad track in the game, and not only are the arrangments FAR more complex, longer in length before looping, involving more instruments (sometimes twice as many), have more variety in terms of world music influence, are FAR more memorable, but the number of top quality tracks is well into the double digits. And the overall audio quality of the first game is FAR better, the 2nd game is so squeaky and uses poorer sampling. Gregminster Palace Gregminster Mt Seifu Theme of Moonlit Night Theme of Sadness both version the incredble Lake Kouan town theme Village of the Elves, Dark Forest Theme of tension Sneaking into Lepant's mansion Both versions of the Home base castle theme Antei - village of the People Kirov's eastern european peasant village The prologue movie theme Forgotten Days - Village of the Hidden Rune (the best track in the game and the series) Warriors Village theme Neclord's Passacaria Knights of the Dragon's Den Ending credits All of these are stellar tracks and better than of track in Suikoden 2 except for the 3 I mentioned. And the battle them of Suikoden 1 is way better than the battle theme in Suikoden 2. Normally I'd agree to disagree but in this case you're just wrong dude. Wrong as wrong can be.
Did not expect you to rank Suikoden V above II, i probably don't agree with that, but i still think V is a criminally underrated game, and i consider it the second best in the series. Such a shame that it didn't pull the numbers it needed, or that Konami couldn't see anything beyond numbers, they where on a goldmine with that one and just tossed it out Suikoden III a the bottom feels a bit harsh. Yeah, it's a middling game, but i really can't place it below Tierkreis, seriously fuck that game
I like 3 more than you even while agreeing with all your points about it. Camera and back tracking are a pain in 3 too, but I like Luc’s story turn I think it carries the game, the tie ins to 1 and 2 are appreciated (less superficial and tacked on than say Chrono Cross’ tie ins to Trigger) and the characters are pretty solid, except for the ducks haha. For me 1, 2 and 5 are the gold standards of the series. Tactics, 3 and 4 are flawed but good enough... and I just dont consider Tiekries to be a Suikoden game. lol
I found Luc' motivations pretty stupid. Like they tried to make them deep but it's totally the opposite. Also, he wanted to get rid of the rune by destroying it, yet the franchise itself shows countless of times that there are many ways to relinquish the runes.
I never played the DS one but I've played all the rest and I agree mostly with your assessment. I didn't hate Suikoden 3 as much as you. It came out when I was in college and I got it for Christmas one year and I literally spent 3 days on this comfy ass recliner at my parents house playing it nonstop. So it holds a special place in my heart. There's definitely a HUUUUGE gap between number 4 and 3 in this list. 1, 2 and 5 are head and shoulders above the rest. I can't wait for Eiyuden Chronicles....
I totally agree with your opinion on Suikoden 3.. I played for the first time these days and man... what a difficult and frustrating game... the Fire Dragon was a hell of a fight and took me over 5 tries to beat it down.. and now I am stuck again on Yuber
Looking back, Suikoden IV wasn't such a bad game. First of all, IV told the story from the perspective of the Mediterranean climate, which was a nice change from castles and a typical fantasy set in the Middle Ages. It was also nice to learn about Ted's fate and more about the rune of the punishment. The sea fights and voice acting weren't bad either. Of course, 2 is undoubtedly the best part and one of the best stories in the history of J-RPGs with an amazing OST.
I could go on and on about this series but I will keep my response short this time (David - "Thank the heavens this will be short") lol! I couldnt get into 3 especially how 2 was, exceptional, amazingly built and the story...come on with that, when the game was over I demanded there be more game! 2 has the art style, the battle systems and look and story I love. Definitely number 1 for me! Thank you David, would be great to see other lists like this too!
I was the opposite, I remember getting 3 for Christmas and feeling happy that the end of 2 was solidified. The story was good and it fit that trilogy of games (of course we needed a 4th to actually finish that story.)
Call me silly but I quit tactics after my suikoden 4 hero joined with my save file only for his name to be all in CAPS. Also, I used to dislike 4. Thought it was too short by the time I got all the cool characters. But for some reason, as I got older, it became one of my favorites tied with 1 and 2 for various reasons. So glad I discovered this series as a teenager. Has been a huge influence on my musical creativity along with many of the games you've played and covered on your channel.
I played Eiyuden Chronicle Heroes Rising a while ago and enjoyed myself. So with EC Hundred Heroes coming out soon I'm finally trying out Suikoden 1 for the first time and I'm enjoying myself quite a bit so far!
My order of what games I enjoy in this series is slightly different. I would put either 3 or Tierkreis as the bottom. The Trinity site system really bugged me, got sick of it really fast not to mention all the other things you mentioned in the video. But I'd still put it above the DS game maybe if only because it fits into the main Suikoden timeline. I know I'm in the minority but I really enjoy 4 despite the fact that there's only four party members and the cruising around in a ship can get a bit tedious. Ultimately in my ranking I put four and tactics together as one game because they complement each other so well. I can't think of any complaints on tactics, and that's considering that I'm not usually super enthralled about Tactic Games. Then it's kind of a tie between 5 and 2. I'd probably put two above 5 from what I can recall since it's been a while since I've played both of them. Finally, one is still my favorite. It's the one I started with, I was pleasantly surprised when my friend bought it for me and it blew me away. I got obsessed with it and played through it several times in a very short time. And it probably has my favorite soundtrack out of the entire series. Absolutely loved one as number one. There's also the two Gaidens, Web of a Woven Century, and Suikoden Card Stories. I'm not big into card games and my understanding is that it's just a retelling of the second game. I do need to get around to the two Gaidens and the PSP game. Hopefully they all get a proper commercial remaster release at some point!
I have an unpopular opinion but I really enjoy suikoden tierkries (but to be fair it was my first one) but even after playing one and two I think it is still a great game Edit:forgot to say but amazing video as always and would love to see more videos like this.
My buddy Caront has one up right now! Check out his RUclips channel if you like. He also has a blind playthrough of Suikoden 2, Skies of Arcadia, Wild Arms, and other RPGs.
Just here to show my love for Suikoden 3 so it can continue to be just as polarizing as it was when it was released. It’s the definition of a love it or hate it game. I’m one of those weirdos that loves it but definitely understands it is extremely flawed. It just hits all the right spots for me and I love the manga series that fills in plot holes and makes Luc’s motivations and emotions more well known and up front instead of putting them in the 108 star true ending.
"Rather than previous games being focused on limiting what you can do or who you can have in your party, Suikoden V prides itself on letting you play the game how you want to play it." Unless you want Georg in your party. Then Suikoden V will happily give you the finger and say "SCREW YOU!"
I understand the complaints about Suikoden 3, but it's actually really fun after you get used to the combat. I appreciate that you didn't slander 4 like everyone always does. Ship travel is nice and soothing, with lots of fun battles.
I’ve been trying to truck through Suikoden III for ages hahaha I do have very fond memories of finishing the first two however which is basically like one long game.. Still got em on my PSP as a matter of fact!! Funny in that I got into Trails because it was recommended for Suikoden fans.. Then that series became my favorite.. So in essence it all worked out.. I def look forward to the new Suikoden even though it’s gonna be under a different name.. Additionally there’s also Alliance Alive which is oft mentioned along with these..
Maybe I'll give it another shot one of these days, but it's just so long and I hate having to constantly replay the same scenes, it's just so boring to me.
@@davidvinc Everything you disliked about it is fair and valid. I just didn't dislike them for whatever reason. I felt a lot more invested in a lot more characters than the other games because of the trinity system. If you were to hand me Thomas' crew in a different Suikoden game, I'd have retired them all from my party for the remainder of the game the second they got one-shotted by a tiny axe-wielding bunny in the first map. But I stuck with 'em and whipped 'em into shape. To me, Suikoden III is the antithesis of Suikoden IV. One is boring, lifeless, depressing and lacks personality while the other makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I love the characters. I love the music. I love the towns. The castle. The character models. The Duck Clan! Nash. Lilly. Not one. But two Vikis! I also liked wandering back and forth murdalizing chest monsters for art and statues. Did I mention 2 Vikis?
You should check your titles for the youtube auto segmenter, as some of them could potentially lead to restricitons as a few of them say self-harm type things.
Oh thanks for telling me, I just went ahead and turned off all the chapters so they won't ever appear again. I don't know how to change the names myself.
Suikoden 3 narrative structure is very similar to Pulp Fiction. They want you to see a point of view experience for characters around a central plot. Each character's experience is just a small piece of the overall plot. After beating the game you put all those pieces together. Speaking of Pulp Fiction. I watched it with three other friends in the theater. I thought it was a masterpiece. The others thought it was a waste of their time. I can see people that beat suikoden 3 having the same reaction. Love/Hate it.
A long time ago my friend wanted Final Fantasy XIII and offered to swap for Suikoden V.... I was the clear winner of that trade for sure, Suikoden V is a great game and the best in the franchise imo (Suikoden 2 being a very close 2nd)
I've only played the first two, and Luca is a big reason for why I did not care for 2 nearly as much as 1. He felt too cartoony and like he was mostly evil for the sake of being evil, which also felt at odds with the world at large. Why is such an obviously evil madman getting so much support? Also I thought the tactical battles in Suikoden 2 were a real drag, they were slow and not particularly tactical. Even though the battles in Suikoden 1 were not amazing, I liked them more (and this comes from someone who normally loves tactical battles). Suikoden 1 is probably my favourite JRPG ever made, and this is not me being nostalgic, I played the game a bit over a year ago for the first time, Suikoden 2 is just really good.
I am currently playing Gensō Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century a psp hidden gem that was english patched. Not sure if you are tracking on it, but it's a cool experience.
I'd like to know your thoughts on Woven Web of the Century. I'm almost through it, and while I do like it more than Tierkreis, I don't feel like it could touch Suikoden 3 or 4, much less any of the better games. I'd put it between "okay" and "good" (so...decent?).
Despite their ballooning prices, thankfully, Suikoden 1-4 are all available for cheap digitally on PS3.. But not 5, which is starting to approach Suikoden II prices :(
Before I start. 'RUclips says the game in the video is Final Fantasy 5.' RUclips pls, your drunk, go home. 7. 'Worst to Best.' 'Suikoden 3 is first.' Ooph, that's a rough take. 6. If it was under a different name, this would have been received alot better. I think that gameplay wise, it's probably better than 4..........but it is not better than 3 to me. As a JRPG, it's one of the better ones on the DS honestly, it's a Good, possibly GREAT game. It is a poor Suikoden game. 5. Yeah, this feels about the right spot for the game. There was some good ideas.........they were not quite executed well. A Shame Really. 4. The game is flawed........and part of it is Probably because, if a certain Goon's theory is correct, it was rushed (Think bout it for a second, what did Eleanor actually do?). 3. I agree with this game's placement. It was the first of the Series, it has not aged well honestly, but it was the start of it all, and it's still a great game. 2. 'Is not number 1.' Wha? Really? 1. This game is kind of amazing given Murayama wasn't involved in it, and unlike the other games on the list didn't, this one somehow turned out to be one of the best in the franchise. 'Funky G' Lol wot?
Even if I don't fully agree, I actually liked your Ranking, and despite I like Suikoden 3 I agree with your complaints. Overall, Suikoden is a great franchise. My rank would be most favorite to least. 1) Suikoden 2 2) Suikoden 5 3) Suikoden 3 4) Suikoden 1 5) Suikoden 4 6) Suikoden Tierkress 7) Suikoden Tactics
Sometimes I feel as though David puts certain characters or games as worst on a list to draw attention to a terrible flaw, rather than to put the game down as a whole hehe.
You should do a video ranking either the true runes in order of strength or preference. Or, video ranking the protagonist. The latter might be difficult due to a majority of them being silent protagonist. With that said, I still have my favorites
only Suikoden game I've played on this list is Tierkries actually :p I never had a PS1 and didn't get a PS2 till the end of its lifespan, though I did pick up 1 and 2 on my PS Vita. Just need to get around to playing them. Thank goodness for the virtual store for that
Listening to you it sounded like you placed 3 lower than a game you enjoyed less but that would raise it only one place. I don't get the generic tag you gave it as it stands out to me and I found the story lines all entertaining... usually. No 3's low point was when the story stopped carrying me along and had me choose where and who next... as to the Buddy system I liked easier use of Combo atks enough to balance out my annoyance with the rare occation I wanted both to act. Plus I liked its story more than 2's... I played it first and did not feel left out of the loop. 2 I felt left out of the loop as there were so many references to what MC's pa or grand da did that I thought that the first game was a part 1 and this a part 2 and without both I could not appreciate the "singular game" they made.
@Back from the Deadpool That last fight was difficult without the best gear which I lacked. my level 60ish characters were 2 round KOed in all my attempts. But yes the fights comparattively to 2 were simple and unimaginative. There were a few that I struggled with and I left the last fight undone since I could not make myself immune to magic enough to last long. I like challenging puzzles and medium level boss fights so I can get to the next piece of story sooner.
@@SeventhheavenDK The game is still a part of it. If it makes you feel out of the loop then even if I am mistaken; the dev team should of did things a bit different. Only 4 do I not like and I accept its a me problem.
okay, i've been a fan of the series since the beginning, though i had my top faves reversed from yours. you may have changed my mind. after your assessment i have to agree that V took the series further than II as far as mechanics and overall game play. i still think the story of II is better, but may have to concede that V is an overall better game. well done.
Hearing suiko 5 musical opening with suiko 3 opening animation threw me off a bit. Anywho, my personal ranking would be 2-5-1-3-4- tierkreis. Never played tactics.
I have only heard of 5 as I never saw it or the tactics or other extra... 2 is the rarest? I did pay over 100$ for 2 at the local game shop. Plus I consider Viki the main character of the series... isn't she in everyone of them and normally shows up do to her magic being a klutz. I liked that in 3 you could have both her child self and her adult self out at once.

I love 3 more than any other of the 6 I've played.
My personal list: Hate: 4-3 | Meh: 5 | Good: Tierkreis-Tactic | Amazing: 1 | PERFECTION: 2
Eiyuden Chronicle is the first Kickstarter I've ever backed, so here's hoping for a good spiritual successor the same way Bloodstained was for the Igavania subgenre of Castlevania games.
Honestly 2 and 3 are the only ones worth playing. Both are among the best rpgs of all time.
V is way better than 3, honestly.
I plan on picking up the remaster of Suikoden 1 and 2 whenever it comes out
There's Eyuden Chronicle, a Kickstarted backed game with several Suikoden developpers in its team...
Interested ?
Very
First kickstarter I've ever backed. I LOVED Suikoden 1 and 2. Haven't even had anything to do with JRPG's for 10-15 years probably until some channels like David's got me nostalgic for them.
@@praetorxyn Wasn't my First Kickstarter, but it's definitely the one I'm most excited about.
I like the blur effect of the game like in octopath and wishing this would carry on to bring more jrpgs with the same effect
I am more interested in the real Suikoden Remasters coming.
Importing my character from S1 into S2 completely blew my mind.
5 is definitely a hidden gem. Really underrated game.
I can’t seem to find this one digitally unfortunately
Well, when it was released it got the merit it deserved. Only complaint was the boring first handful of hours.
@@bradb7610 i never found that boring. I was really interested in the world and the characters in it. but i may be the exception, not the rule.
Never played 5! Loved the first 3 but 4 took me out. I wish I could download it digitally
And now Suikoden 1 & 2 are back with a remaster!
And now Suikoden 1 & 2 are back with a remaster!
@@MiamiSunrise We somehow got a Castlevania Collection, so we might still lucky, but I'm not holding my breath.
Gimme the lazy collection port of this series!! Haha
Hey davidvinc, did you play Exit Fate? It is a free game, it looks just like Suikoden 2 and story is really good.
Definitely one of my top favorite series of all time~
My number one spot is always flip-flopping between 2 and 5.
Yeah I got it for Christmas and played the intro several times over, lol. It was a good game.
Remember the critics main weakness for S3 was its music. Look it up haha.
Just a shout-out to anyone interested in the series as I was: you can skip the brutal price tag on II through the Playstation Store on PS3. I, III and IV are on there too. :)
No fucking way is Suikoden 3 worse than Suikoden 4. Suikoden 4 is the worst of the main line games by a lot.
3 would have been the best game to do it, considering Harmonia’s direct involvement in the plot
Yeah Tierkris was a piece of shit. It felt like every second boss fight was an unwinnable one too, and then the next boss fight you would actually fight the boss.
And that sand dungeon can die in a fire.
I loved suikoden 3
My ranking is 2,5,3,1, tactics,4
One of my favorite series. I always try to play through 1 and 2 once a year.
While we might not get another game in the series, Eiyuden Chronicles looks to carry on as a spiritual successor.
I'm surprised to hear the 4 is considered controversial. Most of my memories are of 2 & 4, must have replayed those the most. So glad we're getting a re-master, it's a day one purchase from me ❤
I played only V and Tactics.
4 was the worst easy, tactics prob next, (or w/e the ds one was)
Woah I did not expect Suikoden 3 to be below the spinoffs. It was my first Suikoden game so I'm a bit nostalgic for it but I can respect your opinion. I tend to go back and forth between 2 and 5 for my #1 spot. My current list would be
1. Suikoden 2
2.Suikoden 5
3.Suikoden 1
4.Suikoden 3
5.Suikoden 4
6. Suikoden Tactics
7. Suikoden Tierkreis
This is close to my list as well. Except I would put tactics above 4
@@matsujonen Honestly after replaying both 4 and Tactics back to back a few months ago, I have to agree with you there
Suikoden 3 is easily one of my favorite rpgs, with 5 not too far behind.
Thomas chapters are a pain.
Great breakdown of the Suikoden series ranking, really enjoyed the insights and analysis!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Noticed your love for Suikoden - I’m also diving into the Suikoden universe! Feel free to explore my Suikoden-related space.@@davidvinc
Gregminster Palace
Gregminster
Mt Seifu
Theme of Moonlit Night
Theme of Sadness both version
the incredble Lake Kouan town theme
Village of the Elves,
Dark Forest
Theme of tension
Sneaking into Lepant's mansion
Both versions of the Home base castle theme
Antei - village of the People
Kirov's eastern european peasant village
The prologue movie theme
Forgotten Days - Village of the Hidden Rune (the best track in the game and the series)
Warriors Village theme
Neclord's Passacaria
Knights of the Dragon's Den

All of these are stellar tracks and better than of track in Suikoden 2 except for the 3 I mentioned.
Such a shame that it didn't pull the numbers it needed, or that Konami couldn't see anything beyond numbers, they where on a goldmine with that one and just tossed it out
Suikoden III a the bottom feels a bit harsh. Yeah, it's a middling game, but i really can't place it below Tierkreis, seriously fuck that game
Awesome list. I only ever played 1 and 2. Kind of want to check out the rest. Thanks!
I agreed with everything about suikoden 3 except for the trinity system but the third one was my first and only experience of suikoden.
Good to see your ranking. I still haven’t played any of these, but I am planning to play the first and second games on Vita someday
The water dragon was too hard
Water Dragon.
5 is not better than 2.
Hey David, I don't know if you saw but a classic throwback JRPG called Legrand Legacy is 90% off right now on Switch.
8:29 he mentions Luca Blight being up there with Kefka and who? I can't clearly hear the third name.
Edna, from Wild Arms XF. I talked about her greatness in my top 10 best villains video.
Wild Arms and Grandia would also be great series to rank!
SUIKODEN 2 >>>>> ALL
I have the same top 3 in the same order. Suikoden 2 is probably the most highly regarded, but 5 has so much charm.
I have an unpopular opinion but I really enjoy suikoden tierkries (but to be fair it was my first one) but even after playing one and two I think it is still a great game
Edit:forgot to say but amazing video as always and would love to see more videos like this.
I played all but 5 when they first came out. Still have Suikoden 2. Need to play Suikoden 5
4:57. Talkin about doodoo.
Try mainline SMT. (Can include IV:A and Strange Journey). You don't say much about SMT and I'm curious how you feel about them.
It's funny how I'm like the only person who can vibe with suikoden tierkreis to the point that I beat the game 5 times (1 normal 4 complete)
That 4 isn't the bottom of this list is crazy.
S4 is fun. Especially the battle
A let's play of suikoden 5 would be cool
My buddy Caront has one up right now! Check out his RUclips channel if you like. He also has a blind playthrough of Suikoden 2, Skies of Arcadia, Wild Arms, and other RPGs.
@@alkristopher cool and thanks
Just here to show my love for Suikoden 3 so it can continue to be just as polarizing as it was when it was released. It’s the definition of a love it or hate it game. I’m one of those weirdos that loves it but definitely understands it is extremely flawed. It just hits all the right spots for me and I love the manga series that fills in plot holes and makes Luc’s motivations and emotions more well known and up front instead of putting them in the 108 star true ending.
Gotta hand a paw to one thing in Suikoden III, the intro song was great
"Rather than previous games being focused on limiting what you can do or who you can have in your party, Suikoden V prides itself on letting you play the game how you want to play it."
Unless you want Georg in your party. Then Suikoden V will happily give you the finger and say "SCREW YOU!"
Why
I thought he was OP
Well, in new game plus he can be taken to the final battle at least
Third game's my favorite. I won't say it's the best. But it's the one I enjoyed the most. Even Thomas' chapters.
No worries, getting demonetized is awful.@@davidvinc
@@secretbunnyninja yeah it is, thanks for the heads up!
I have a feeling this could have been a great setting for an MMO.
I can’t believe you didn’t put Chrono cross at the top on this list!
Ahhh Luca Blight. After almost 20 years, you're still my favorite villain in the series. Next is Yuber.
suikoden 2 was amazing! I actually cried when SHE dies (not gonna ruin it for people..but YOU know who im talking about)
I am currently playing Gensō Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century a psp hidden gem that was english patched. Not sure if you are tracking on it, but it's a cool experience.
Oops looked it up and you do know about it. :)
I've not played this series, but I was surprised that 2 did not come in first place.
Who was it you mentioned after Kefka? The only results I got were Etna from disgaea and Edna from ToZ.
Edna from Wild Arms XF
Tierkreis was my first Suikoden game, but I can understand putting it low on the list.
But not 5, which is starting to approach Suikoden II prices :(
I have 5 in my ps2 hdd and I haven't touched it yet! This makes me think I should give it a go
Normally agree with David a ton, but putting III as the worst was simply incorrect. Minus 10 respect points.
Before I start.
'RUclips says the game in the video is Final Fantasy 5.'
RUclips pls, your drunk, go home.
7. 'Worst to Best.'
'Suikoden 3 is first.'
Ooph, that's a rough take.
'Funky G'
Lol wot?
Even if I don't fully agree, I actually liked your Ranking, and despite I like Suikoden 3 I agree with your complaints. Overall, Suikoden is a great franchise.
My rank would be most favorite to least.
1) Suikoden 2
2) Suikoden 5
3) Suikoden 3
4) Suikoden 1
5) Suikoden 4
6) Suikoden Tierkress
7) Suikoden Tactics
Sometimes I feel as though David puts certain characters or games as worst on a list to draw attention to a terrible flaw, rather than to put the game down as a whole hehe.
You should do a video ranking either the true runes in order of strength or preference. Or, video ranking the protagonist. The latter might be difficult due to a majority of them being silent protagonist. With that said, I still have my favorites
Suikoden 2 is my fav! can't wait to see how Eiyuuden will be
only Suikoden game I've played on this list is Tierkries actually :p I never had a PS1 and didn't get a PS2 till the end of its lifespan, though I did pick up 1 and 2 on my PS Vita.
Suikoden 2 MC's Granpa is not even in the first game. 😂
So, I think you are the real problem more than the game itself.
Anywho, my personal ranking would be
2-5-1-3-4- tierkreis. Never played tactics.
Suikoden should be played 45123. Chronological order and worst to best. Win win.
