Excellent and honest review. I’ve owned 6 Rolex’, including the 36 Exp. I’ve happily moved on to IWC and a Tudor Ranger Heritage as my tool watch. I just love the raised crystal, the vintage look and the homage to the original Explorer. The brushed case is just another bonus in addition to the perfect fit. I could never get any Rolex to fit just right, tbh.
Hi ID Guy - unrelated question (kinda related to the Explorer.. ) do you have a link to where I can get a jubilee bracelet like yours to fit my Everest 36mm? 🧐
Thanks for the video ID Guy, you’ve given me plenty to think about as I am intending to get an explorer. Looks like you are going to compare it to your Seamaster 300m? Have you thought about comparing it to the Railmaster also? That’s the other watch I’m considering.
I think 'understatedness' is the key quality of Explorer - it may seem boring to some but it may mean the ultimate form sophistication for others, like a well-cut classic two piece charcoal suit.
I've never felt so "neutral" about a watch at first, Geezer... it was seriously underwhelming. It took a full week and day for me to finally say "It's beautiful". Looking forward to ripping into the Seamaster and Explorer designs in the next few weeks ;)
And for a watch to make you smile is what makes all the difference ;) I think that is literally the ultimate achievement we can unlock in this hobby. Thank you for the comment, man!
Mine makes me smile too. Very good way of describing the love of the piece. I find myself staring at the dial, looking at the fine polishing and flawless brushing. The oyster bracelet with the easy link, gives you a perfect fit. And it’s the most comfortable bracelet I have. Im very pleased with this purchase.
MoStudio same here. This watch does it all. Board shorts to Suit and Tie, it’s a timeless piece. Powerful in its simple elegance. I also smile wearing it.
I look down on the explorer more than on any other watch. It fascinates me every time how subtle, simple and useful it is. And yet it's just the right amount of interesting that puts it above the OP.
I liked that last line about it being "just that right amount of interesting" Fully agree with you there. There's lots of visual complexity to the dial that can go unnoticed. It's going to be an interesting month of wearing to say the least ;) Thank you for the comment, man!
Yes it might be “boring” to look at on its own but when you put it on your wrist it makes whatever outfit you wearing look so much better. Like how suddenly your suit trousers look so much better with a pair of Edward green “boring looking” black toe cap in 82 last.
Bought my 114270 and it has quenched my urge to buy more. That's the biggest reason why I love it. It put my mind at ease of what should I buy/wear. It's not the perfect watch for every situation but I think its the best watch for me. There are a couple of things I'm not crazy about, but I have never felt like replacing it. I wear it every day, and I hope it stays that way for decades to come.
It's strange how this watch impacts our perceptions, right? I'm sure you can tell that I have a few reservations around these modern pieces. BUT they are amazing to just throw on and use (I'm rocking the Smiths right now) and they really all do have that feeling of "a watch that you wear when you don't want to think about watches." Thank you for the comment Christian!
For me the best Rolex, the simplicity and understated look is it's strength, it tells the time and that's what a watch should do, looks fantastic as well.
We can't shake the appeal of the watch and its simplicity. No matter how deep we try to dig into its flaws, wearability etc. The design of this watch just continues to pull us back...
I really don’t get the price at 2.5k to 3k. I’ve owned in the past a Tag that was that kinda money I’ve owned Omegas and Tudors etc. All great watches but there is no doubt that the tolerances and designs you speak of regarding this Explorer make it feel worth more than the price you are suggesting when compared with the competition. When Breitling are asking 2.5k for plastics cased quartz watches and there are many eta movement watches at that money I feel you’re off the mark. All Rolex are more than they shd be . Compared to the market and what say a Railmaster costs. 2.5k is way off IMO. Unless you’re saying all luxury watches are too much? Omega have had so many price rises in the last 2 years it seems to be getting out of hand. They are all going a bit vertical atm. Value is of course subjective. But I can’t see 2.5 to 3k when compared with other marks. IWC entry level simple pilots watches aren’t in house movements for example and they are 4 grand. Its just way off IMO. I enjoyed the review and there were some solid points made. For me it’s kinda my “straight man” watch in my little collection. It still feels special but I wear it when I don’t want to be noticed at all. I often wear it on a rubber b or a leather strap and would happily wear it around London with no fear of getting mugged. I’ve worn it on bike rides, I wear it to the gym. It does feel more “go anywhere” than say a sub or a moonwatch etc would do. I wouldn’t wear most of my other watches in this way.
I agree 100%. Valuing a modern Explorer at $2,500 to $3,000 is just ridiculous. I was really surprised when he said this. Seems to show a lack of understanding for the watch in my opinion
I think that he's right. The Explorer is overpriced. All S/Steel Rolex is overpriced! Why would you fail to acknowledge that? How can you justify not acknowledging that? Your paying a 30% premium for Brand hype and marketing! Who do you think pays for the miles of Rolex wall at every F1 GP? Tennis and golf Grand Slam? Sailing? Equestrian? And who pays for the ambassadors, the advertising? It's certainly ɴᴏᴛ Rolex! I get that's what they do. And the are very good at it indeed. But don't pretend that you don't pay for it via inflated prices! One could take you for niave.
If you took away the crown and provenance is it worth 5k I think was the point, which is a wholly fair comment, railmasters were going for 2.8k from goldsmiths on bracelet recently. If one looks at the build quality of a grand seiko, sbgw231 for 4k, 3k used is the explorer worth more, totally different watches I get that. But don't see anything silly about challenging likely 70 percent mark up on cost to actually make
David B - I'm not sure that I understand what you are saying in your final sentence, so I'll address what I (hope) I do understand...if that makes sense. Unfortunately I have never handled a Grand Seiko so I can't comment on the brand aside from many trusted sources citing them as the pinnacle in finishing. IMO, the Rolex Explorer is not the only over priced s/steel sports in todays market. The Speedy Pro Moon watch Hesalite comes to mind. However I think Rolex are certainly the brand that comes to mind when one thinks of an entire range being overpriced, especially when one considers very clever market manipulation to inflate prices. As far as other pieces that are - subjectively - of lesser quality increasing their own prices, one could argue that they are simply taking advantage of all the $ and hardwork Rolex expends to keep it's prices high. Far be it from me to tell somebody how to spend their money! And even worse, to criticise how it is spent. But avoiding the ʀᴇᴀʟɪᴛʏ of where the $ spent actually goes in cost allocation is, in my mind, worth a call out. I don't want to pay for signs, ads and famous faces to the extent that Rolex asks me to, so I don't. That does not make people who choose to buy a Rolex anything other than different to me, and if the so called Rolex bubble doesn't pop, perhaps a little wealthier too! I look at the Tudor of today and I see bargain. I see more than one or two pieces that are an astute buy and in many cases I see pieces that are cheaper to own. Less finesse than Rolex, undoubtedly, but for me and my taste and my budget, a higher % of my $ is going into the watch from a company that is fighting to re-build a brand, so from that perspective I simply see Rolex as being over priced. I hope that addresses some of your comments David, and clarifies a few of mine. Cheers.
It 100% works as a "one watch" if you can live without the date function (you will miss it, but you will live). If you had only one watch for the rest of your life, it would have to be one that looks good in almost every situation. The exception would be if you had a profession or hobby that calls for something more complicated. You also don't want your "one watch" to garner a lot of attention. There will be times that that is not a good thing. Agree with most points in the video, though if this piece "should" be priced at $3k max, a sub "should" cost $3.5k max.
I absolutely agree with everything you wrote. I don't understand why so many delude themselves into thinking Rolex or Omega or Breitling, etc. are just upmarket tool watches when they've been luxury items for decades now...$3K for this reference is a ridiculous statement!
I also agree , my "tool" watches are a Sekonda and a Casio, if they were lost or damaged its not a big deal, my 1016 explorer gets looked after because it can't be replaced.
Outstanding video. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion. This is the one watch in my one watch collection and I don’t have any plans to expand. It climbs mountains, runs trails and goes mountain biking with me. I wear it to the office, and on special occasions... it does it all. Every day, I look at it and it makes me smile. Every week it picks up a new scratch or ding and I don’t mind a bit. One of the things I enjoy most is swapping straps. It’s most often on a NATO because I’m on the move outside more days that not. From time to time it’s on leather, but every couple weeks I’ll put it back on the the oyster bracelet and wow... amazing. Living in a world where we all see things differently makes life interesting and fun. While it doesn’t entirely suit you, I wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks again, I’ll look forward to your next video about the 214270.
I love my 214270 for it's simplicity and ruggedness. It is the Rolex you can wear anywhere, on a beach or trekking or in the back streets of a dodgy city without worrying about scratching it, or that someone is going to mug you. Another thing I love is how you can totally change the look of it on a variety of straps. I often wear it on a black Everest rubber strap with the steel deployant clasp and it looks stunning. Another feature you didn't mention is the superb lume.
Had to delay the reveal for as long as possible ;) I can't wait to sink my teeth in a lil versus between these two over the next few weeks. I reckon they both truly feel like jewellery, but you can admire them for very different reasons. I just cannot get enough of the Seamaster though... Thanks for the comment Bob!
@@ID-Guy if I could wear the lug to lug on that Omega I'd have it already. But I have tried it on more than once and it's just too large for my wrist. ( until I get that wrist implant 😉
Bravo, its quite refreshing to hear a review like this as most reviewers give this watch a god like status. Yes a very well made watch but no where near the asking price.
It's popular because it's popular ;) Don't get me wrong, it's a great watch, but it has its issues (what doesn't?) Can't wait to unpack this more over the next few weeks and thank you Marco!
A rare and dare I say, momentous review. You have completely hit the nail on the head when you state that buyers are paying more for the brand than the watch itself, and thereby buying watches that are simply overpriced for what you get. This applies across the board with Rolex watches, of course, and I say this as a proud owner of several Rolex watches, Just six years ago, I bought a perfect example of a pre-ceramic sub for £3.5 and a brand new blue Yacht-Master at a discount from an AD for £6k. I frankly just look on with shock and horror at what's happened with Rolex prices since then. If there's ever been a better example of The Emperor's New Clothes, I'm yet to see it! I genuinely hope that at some point, there will be a collective appreciation and understanding that Rolex watches are not worth the money they are going for... as you say in this excellent review. Great watches, yes, but, for the money? (especially over rrp) a resounding no.
I have a collection of sports modern Rolexs and always overlooked this watch. I purchased it last month and placed it onto a rubber B strap. It's my favourite piece and have not stopped wearing it.. my other pieces dont get a look in, even my Daytona or my sub. Not sure what it is. Maybe the simplicity, the under the radar look or the size. It definitely a keeper. Absolutely love it.
I think your should look at the YM40 as a first/only Rolex. It is brushed and polished and the Rhodium dial is just stunning especially in sunlight. The case is smaller and sleeker than the sub (more like a Daytona or Datejust case) and the slim lugs make it feel like a 5 Digit piece. I know it has a date so not symmetrical but it is one of those pieces that has to be on the wrist to be fully appreciated.
You bought a spare? I know what that feels like ;) Nicely done, man! I've never had a watch change my perceptions and opinions so often in such a short period of time. It's going to be a busy month hahaha!
Excellent and honest review. So honest it makes me look differently at this piece. I own a 36 OP, and it feels so right in size. I think the explorer should have stayed there. Wish more watch channels were like yours. Kudos.
Very flattering, Julien. Thank you! The more I think about my ideal Explorer, the more I look to the 1016 (cliche as it might be). This Smiths Everest has taught me so much about it being a "silent companion" instead of it needing to be overstated for the sake of wrist presence. But it's different for everyone. Some are blessed with larger wrists that the 214270 would look amazing on. This hobby....
It has a very delayed fuse - took me 8 days before I actually said "this is a beautiful watch" out loud. Crazy how much this watch tips out opinions and thanks for the comment Tony!
Its definately a slow burn to appreciate. Having owned and sold the Explorer (214270 MK1) twice, it is understated/plain depending on which way you look at it. Whenever i used to put it on i never went "wow",....more of a "yep that feels so right". After a while i just always skipped over it, in favor of something more visually interesting be it complications or asthetics. You are right in saying that its a watch that you wear when you dont want to think about your watch, because there are no real standout features, its an amalgamation of all the parts. Built for purpose, and uncomprimisingly understated.
Exactly. that "yep, feels right" hits me every time. Even if it takes 10+ years and insane luck, my heart is set on a 1016 (cliche as it might be) - a comment a moment ago mentioned "Silent Partner" and if anything, the lil Smiths Everest taught me how incredible such a simple, unobtrusive watch can be. Thanks for your insight and comment, man. Really appreciated.
So bearing this review in mind, how do you feel about the 39 OP and Omega Aqua Terra in relation to the Explorer? I know you love the 'Bumblebee' Aqua Terra. Do you think it's a better buy? (I know this is personal, but I would like to hear your thoughts none the less)
I think what makes the Explorer such a great piece next to the more basic styled models (like the AT and the OP's) is that the dial still possesses a greater "visual complexity" that makes it much more enjoyable to look at, and it would ultimately keep you more entertained for longer. Some love the idea of wearing watches like the Omega Globemaster. BUT it's all down to our maturity and tastes at the end of the day ;) There are actually way too many factors to even consider. Batons and numerals, Wynand. It's an endless rabbit hole hahaha!
@@ID-Guy For sure. Recently I've grown to like the plain versions of non-plain brands (sorry for the simple terms, but I don't really know how to put it more eloquently). The Rhodium dial OP and the same Aqua Terra you did a review on, speak to me. Even though a 'plain watch' appeals to my persona, I love a little pop of something. The Cyan accents in the Rhodium OP and the bee-like colouration on the Aqua Terra draws me to them even though they might be considered 'plain'. No one would bat an eyelid should I wear any of those while having a Wimpy breakfast, but those who knows, know:) The Explorer has grown on me for that reason, but it lacks the tiny little pop I like.
Ah, the Seamaster just continues to make me smile Tom. Was in a group with rolex / patek and AP collectors and none even looked at the watch. I felt like I'd triumphed ;) AND wearability, movements etc. I'll definitely touch on in Part 2!
IDGuy that is great! Looking forward. It looks more beautiful as a Rolex sub, specialy with the 1957 bezel, I dont know what to think about the arrow. I concider to buy one for years but i always go back to the orriginal.165014 with steat hands
I was in the same mindset as you were when I first handled a Rolex in person, IDGuy. “Why is this thing so plain and simplistic, and yet so hyped and expensive?”. If you’re a WIS, then Rolex won’t immediately blow you away, but I believe it will be a slow release process, where you will naturally and eventually come to appreciate the watch. A midsize Datejust will be my first Rolex, which I hope won’t be subjected to these steel sports supply shortage shenanigans.
It really didn't blow me away at all. Took a full week and a day with it on the wrist to finally say out loud "this watch is beautiful". I have a busy month in store for me... and I still kinda hate you, Chi town ;) Your shenanigans is causing the Livestream to spend days and days in limbo while it processes hahaha!
There are so many details that need to be "explored" oof. It's clearly late... Thank you for the comment Rudy! I'll be expanding on a few of these points in the coming weeks ;)
I purchased my Rolex Explorer 214270 from the Rolex Boutique less than two weeks ago. Having owned the Explorer II 216570 and the GMT-Master II 116710LN, I was never really a fan of the Explorer. Of course that was until I had it sized to my wrist and properly given the chance to enjoy the watch. Very low-key and under the radar, and it fits my 16,5cm wrist perfectly. Unfortunately it had to go back for a warranty checkup as it was losing 12 seconds per day. Overall a great watch, but I still prefer "my" black dial 216570 which I regret selling to this day.
I've heard about some models, fresh from the stores that lose up to 25 seconds a day...How is that even allowed?? I'm sorry that you've had to deal with this issue, man. I also hope that in the end you manage to find a 216570 again. It's so important going with your gut at the end of the day, that's where the true love lies ;)
You said it..... You learned something new when it was actually on your wrist for more than a few minutes, even a few hours. I have come to that same realization over the past few months. There is no substitute for actually wearing the watch in daily wear. One thing I hope you cover in your next video is the actual dial size differences between your Omega 1957 and the Rolex Explorer both actual and perceived. I have measured all my watches as well as some others and discovered something very interesting. Sometimes watches of the same size have dials that are very different in size due to bezels etc. So you have the actual measured size and then the perceived size on the wrist. I would really appreciate your comparison of these two watches. Oh, by the way. I have a wonderful $80 42 mm Seiko black dial SS, quartz sports watch that fills this spot in my watch collection perfectly. As you might remember, I am on the hunt for my first premium watch suitable for daily wear. I have had many considerations and nothing has got me to spend the cash yet.
I’ve had mine for 3 weeks now and was waiting for your review here. I completely agree on the lug width / case diameter point. The watch has lost the ‘stance’ of the 36mm as the case no longer runs smoothly into the bracelet. I also feel the 39mm diameter means the bezel is too wide to avoid reflecting light, thereby giving the dial an oversized and unnecessary frame. It’s a keeper, though I still have an appointment at my AD this weekend to see the Black Bay 36, again. Maybe the Explorer is for once a stepping stone to the homage to itself! Great vid as always. Looking forward to the next one 😉👍
Glad at least one person feels the same way about the proportions with m! It's a strange beast. The more I think about it, the more I plan on waiting, scraping, hoping for a miracle and one day owning a 1016. Nothing will come close (or scratch that itch) that I have for the Explorer otherwise ;) Thank you for the comment Mark!
IDGuy I held a 1967 Explorer in my local independent a couple of weeks ago. You would have loved it. I do appreciate modern build quality though so dream of Rolex one day releasing a smaller Explorer. Maybe they would be brave and increase the size to 41mm next year, leaving room for a reduced option; 37mm perhaps, whilst retaining the 20mm lug width. We can only dream!😉
Some of you guys write you purchased an Explorer in the past few weeks. Are they available at the ADs? Or do we have to go grey market? Thank you for the video. Great as always!
I think Rolex is getting rid of all the stock because it’s about to be discontinued.... my ad called today and said they had mine in . Got the call on the sub a few moths back right before the new release . Think the same thing is happening here , but that’s just my speculation.
"Next video we will be comparing it to a classic" The Explorer is about as classic as Rolex gets. It is instantly recognisable as an Explorer, a watch that has been in the Rolex line up longer than any other sports watch in their range. It is understated class, it doesn't draw attention to itself, if you want that in a watch then maybe the Explorer isn't for you, complaining about the very things that are part of the heritage shows that you don't 'get' the watch. Worrying about other people's comments just shows you are insecure in your choices and need validation. Anyone who is into watches will know exactly what it is, I get that you don't like Rolex. Nothing wrong with that of course, everyone likes different stuff. My Explorer gets more wrist time than any other watch I have, I am quite happy that it goes under the radar.
@@IDKline Of course there are, loads of them, (I love my Omega Speedmaster!) the implication I took from the video was that the Explorer was not considered as being one of them.
@@IDKline he didn't mention any of that in the video so how would anyone know that, he actually says he does not own any Rolex so where does all this stuff about the 1016 come from? Good to hear that he does not require any validation but nice of you to supply it none the less!
@@IDKline Hahaha like anyone watches a video on youtube and thinks 'I had better watch everything else this guy has ever done before I dare make a comment' I appreciate you are very defensive, but it really is OK to make genuine comments to stuff that is posted in the public domain. I watched the video and posted a comment which wasn't rude or aggressive, most You Tube content providers welcome ALL opinions and debate.
I'm wearing my 36mm 114270 as I write this. To me, the 36mm is perfect for the Explorer. Lightweight, understated and not too small for my 7" wrist. I can't comment on the 39mm version because I've never seen one in person. Just on the net. Compared to other 39mm watches that I've owned, I can only assume that it is too much watch for its purpose, a no complication field watch. I also don't know why so many people get bent out of shape about small watches. Years ago, men wore 30, 32, 34mm watches and 36mm was considered a large watch. Some say that men were smaller years ago. Maybe some were but I can remember a lot of big guys wearing small watches. ID Guy..... I wish you could strap on a 36mm Explorer (not a homage) after you return the 39mm. It would make for an interesting comparison.
Fantastic review as always IDGuy. I appreciate your honesty and totally understand your feelings on the Explorer. This watch is not for everyone. In general, as a professional model Rolex, and for me in particular, the 214270 Explorer is almost the perfect watch. Is it the flashiest or most exciting watch? No, but it does do so many things well and flies under the radar while doing it. This could easily be a one and done watch.
I'm really looking forward to expanding on this more (maybe after week 2 of wearing the watch) comparing it to the Seamaster, discussing how their designs were approached so differently. AND I already feel different about the explorer since this video. She has one hell of a delayed fuse hahaha! Thank you as always for these Blueshirt! I hope the babysitting isn't weighing too heavily on you ;)
Nice to see the Explorer next to the Seamaster 300. The latter has a lot to offer which the Rolex lacks. (I own the Seamaster 300 Co-Ax and a Sinn 556i.)
Beautifully stated review. Best one on the Explorer 39mm MkII on RUclips. On its own it looks like a 40/41mm next to a Sub or Speedy it looks small. I really like the dial proportions. They hit it out of the park, with that said. The bezel and the oval optical illusion is what makes this look a bit off. It’s as it was a swollen 39mm watch. It looks and wears larger than its dimensions. Perhaps that is why some people notice the size of the bracelet/case is a little off. To me it has the same heft to a Date Just II. It doesn’t look as refined as the 39mm OP. If it had a dome bezel or a thinner flat bezel, maybe it would wear to its true size. This definitely works with a wrist 7” plus. Anything less than 7” it looks large especially if you are a short thin build gentlemen. I can wear a Panerai and get away with it. I can wear a 36mm Date Just and feel like it’s me. Even a Submariner super case ceramic wears small compared to this. For now I would prefer a 36mm for the price that they are going for now. I think $6900 retail of $7k plus used market is too much for a time only bad is oyster case watch. For a grand more you are in Submariner territory.
IDK, I've gone back and forth on my first Rolex. After about three years, I've changed my mind about the Explorer 1 being my first. I own the Tisell Explorer that does have a larger crown, and I love it, but it's made me reconsider my first Rolex. Now, I want my first to be something more dressy, yes, a Datejust or an Oyster Perpetual. I want a OP black dial/date, and magnifier. Yes, I love this watch, but your right, I would have a hard time spending the money for something I can have at a fraction of the price, leaving my collection more diverse.
I bought a 1016 Explorer new in 1986 and paid, if memory serves, between $650 and $800 US. The Explorer was close to the entry level into Rolex. I think the Air King might have coast about the same. I don't know what the consumer price index has done some 1986 but i suspect the asking price for a current Explorer exceeds the adjusted price. Keep at it.
The more I think and wear this Smiths Everest, the more I hope that one day I get to own a 1016. A "Silent Partner" that completely disappears when it's not needed with such a charming sense of asceticism to its dial... You're a luck man, Mark ;)
@@ID-Guy Thank you for responding. Actually my daughter is the lucky girl! I gave her my 1016 as a Christmas gift perhaps 10 years ago. When she took it to the jeweler to have the bracelet sized (I purchased it new with a Jubilee bracelet inistead of the Oyster) the jeweler asked where she got it, that didn't she have any brothers, and that it was a man's watch. Upon her reply about the gift and that she had no brothers, the jeweler said, "you are a lucky girl!" Thanks for your posting and reply. Keep at it!
Great video. I love my Explorer 214270 because no-one ever notices it. I don't want to have the annoying "Ooh, a Rolex" conversation with people who don't know anything about watches. I agree with you about indoor vs outdoor lighting. The black dial looks so much better in natural light.
Completely disagree, it is the only Rolex that I like. Perfect proportions, understatement, full heritage, totally versatile and no stereotypes!! An all time classic and worth every penny. You’re simply wrong
John Smith As I mentioned before, for me the watch is perfectly proportioned I wouldn’t change anything. I do not share your thoughts and opinions on the watch, but also don’t care about changing your mind if you believe so
John Smith there’s nothing wrong with the 39mm if that can fit your wrist size. This idea that an Explorer can only be 36mm is quite ludicrous. I also believe that people that don’t own this watch/never tried it on in person and just watch RUclips videos to gauge people’s opinions won’t be able to understand what the 39mm Explorer owners already know: this watch is elegant and very well sized! The bracelet is well proportioned and comfortable with its easy link 5mm extra room.
@@JohnSmith-gs2rv But this watch review is not about the first 39mm. This is a watch review for the 214270, with the correctly sized hands. So in the light of that, I'm afraid that much of our discussion merely comes down to one thing: Taste. We'll have to agree to disagree.
Paying for the brand equity is a factor in any purchase, especially in the luxury watch space. This applies to Apple, cars, anything really. If all you value is utility then don't bother with the luxury segment.
Your Seamaster & Smiths are gorgeous. You seem underwhelmed with the Explorer. I know you’ve had your eye on this piece for a long time. Looking forward to further updates. Great content as always.
The more I think about it, the one Explorer that I always return back to is the 1016. Even if it takes 10+ years and an insane amount of luck, that watch would be the only Explorer that truly satisfies me in this category ;) BUT we'll see. The hobby is a never ending rabbit hole. Thank you for the comment Mark!
I reckon they could add an off angle LED somewhere on the rehaut just to make it pop some more, you know? What I want to see is this watch without a standard crystal... Imagine a slight dome / box instead? It'll just finish it so nicely. Anyway, Rolex and their Crystals are (in)famous ;)
IDGuy I don’t mind the reflective & slightly raised flat crystal. I just tilt my wrist to reduce glare/correct things... I was a little sceptical at first with the modern Explorer in general but after just over a year of ownership I can say that I get it & love the darn thing.... PS thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing the next one👌
I agree with your observation about negative space and dial proportions being off a bit on the 39mm Explorers. 37.5mm might have been the better compromise. The 36 is just too small by today’s standard but the 39 was too big of a jump in size. The Explorer styling is classic. It will never go out of style. While it may seem somewhat plain, even dull you will never grow tired of the looks. It’s a watch to grow old with and a bargain as far as Rolex Sport watches
You nailed it. I thought I wanted this piece, but it turns that I only wanted a similar piece. The itch was easily scratched by a flieger, of all things: the IWC Mark XVI. Go figure. For me, the Explorer will forever remain a watch which I like the idea of, but could have been met by several pieces, all much cheaper. I thought it was "the one" simply because it was the first piece to ever make me feel all fuzzy inside. It still does at least.
Great insight on this watch. I just purchased this one not long ago and the 39 works well on my flat wrist. It’s perfect for me for its simplicity, just need the time. Less is more, but adding 369, mercedes hands and the triangle at 12 just does it for me. Over an OP. I agree crown needs to be a bit larger.
when someone lends you a watch your feelings will always be different to the watches you own and have spent hard earned $ on. in this way, it can never truly be an accurate representation and analysis and i mean that with respect (not being rude or negative, love your channel!)
You're not alone on this Jenks. I know more than a few owners who've sold it for that reason alone. Maybe I can include a section about the dial design in the closing thoughts video? ;) Thanks for the comment, brother!
Chipping in on people's comments. Watches have diminishing returns, expensive versus a Smiths but cheap compared to a Royal Oak. I think the better question is what would rather have at this price point (assuming you could not pocket the difference). This watch grows on you, to the point where I'm not sure I even need another. A worthy companion that isn't out of place whatever you're doing or wherever you're going.
This is THE watch....I agree, it has to work for you but it really is THE watch. If you only ever own one watch, need one watch, want one watch, this IS the watch; it is classic and all others try but always fall slightly short (IMHO :)) Love your work, thank you for all the effort it must take - we ALL appreciate it.
Spot on! Great watch. A one a done for some people - but needs an updated movement. Hoping they don’t update it to a 41mm! Unfortunately, I graduated from this model awhile back. But good for a 20-30 year old person . All Rolexes are boring and mass produced - unlike Patek, VC or AP. But everyone man needs one !! Nice video mate.
Just sold mine. I liked it a lot, but the 39 always seemed just a bit too petite for me (might be perfect for someone else / smaller wrist), and a bit too understated for me. I have an AIr King as my daily now, which is perfect for me size wise - it has a lot more more presence (and it’s quirky, which I like). Just my opinion, but I think these two watches (Seamaster 57 and Explorer) are too similar for the same collection, both being no date daily wears (unless it’s a large collection) - get a GMT, dress watch, a complication or a chronograph for some variety / horological interest. I’m very happy right now with Air King, BB GMT and Zenith El Primero.
The movement. I'll definitely be touching on this in the next part of the review series. I'm so hoping that they tighten up the next generation of this model in the few places... but who knows? Thanks for the comment!
Curious if you had a chance to do something similar with the 36 mm version? That is one that has been on my radar, for some reason not nearly as much with the 39 mm model
Thanks for sharing your perspective. I find myself feeling much the same way about the explorer. I have been lusting after one for years and just this month was ready to pul the trigger. But when I tried one on, the magic wasn't there. Far from it in fact. The 36 looked like an "old-man's" watch on my arm (I am not young). It's gorgeous but not a lot of visual interest unless you look up close. The 39 is a better size but I agree with your assessment. The design didn't scale up well and the inconsistencies are that much more apparent in the larger size. I ended up buying an explorer ii 16570 for daily wear. It's a good size, good proportions and has more visual interest without being too flashy. I am very happy with it.
Funny how we rationalise these things, right? Excellent choice with the 16570. The more I think about it, even with its ridiculous pricetag, the one watch that I really want and the one that would ultimately satisfy this Explorer craving of mine, would have to be the 1016. The Smiths Everest has taught me how versatile of a design it is (and whenever I'm wearing the watch, the thought never disappears) Maybe in the next 10 years my luck will change ;) Thank you for your comment Gary!
This is a plain watch that you will feel it's plain to put it down but quite often , you will want to wear it so much because of it's sleek design I think this is called classic It's a watch that worth to stay forever in anyone's collection because you will always want to wear it from time to time
It is! The Seamaster measures in and around 49mm's and the Explorer is 47. I'll be focusing on how these watches trick the eye with presence in the versus video. Both are 39mm's in diameter, and both manage to take up the wrist space very differently. Thanks for the comment Michael!
What about the Rolex bracelet? It’s like having silky steel wrapped around your wrist! And its so sharp looking too with all that brush. It’s hard to beat.
I am on a waiting list for one but it has to be admitted that there are plenty of equally well made and much better value options around. I suspect that when I get 'the call' the money will have already been spent elsewhere.
Been wearing the Explorer for the last few days, and realized that the flat crystal makes the watch 11.3 mm in thickness, which I think greatly helps the watch as a great daily. I would not change it for a domed crystal, it was conceived to have a flat profile.
Ditto Tony Hill, very well said! I wholly concur with your thoughts, only but a few notice, or have awarness of what's on my wrist. Only but a few fix gaze to register that as soon as the meetings ended an interesting chat will result. The explorer is part of my daily rotation of Subs, Pepsi, Batman, Wimbledon and OP. All of them have a place and a time, reflecting mood and a thought for the day ahead. The explorer is as described, it flies well under the radar and so different to the rest of my pieces which are much louder. I don't feel it's a piece that should receive as much attention all the time, instead, for me at least, it creates balance to complements atire, not something I need to look at all the time - essentially fit for purpose. And yes, i agree, it might be best to start OP route, its still my favourite for the memories of events I can recall - wearing it 10 years certainly proved it's durability and interest which honed interest and later pieces. I don't think the Explorer being priced 2k, 3k, 4k... is relevant, we all know the actual cost is a fraction of retail. What's a watch worth? The retainment of value is genuine factor for consideration, if you're in the market for a car worth at least the same years on after putting miles and miles on the clock, you've got a keeper, you would if you have the funds buy it. Also it helps if you like it - it's all very subjective
To be honest, with the exception of the 116610LV (Hulk), none of my modern Rolex watches are special enough for me to be in awe when looking at the dial. For that I turn to my Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Grand Date, or vintage watches with patina and tritium markers.
I do not know how many times I watched this video. Today i watched one more time and i am still confused. I like explorer but 1016 so i have Smith's Smith's prs-25 however now 36mm version is available therefore what should i do ?
Felt a bit deflated too the first time I briefly got my hands on one. I have never owned one so cannot comment further. Looking forward to the comparison. When will your last live stream be available as I missed the latter half of the stream? Thanks
It has a serious delayed fuse. Crazy actually. I think everyone would eventually come round to it (given time) and the Livestream, it's stuck in processing at the moment (did a bit of editing after the show and now RUclips has kept it in limbo) - it should be back on the page before Friday hopefully. Thanks a lot of the comment, man!
Been looking forward to this since the Saturday stream and agree wholeheartedly. I think it's the value proposition at the price that's most questionable. Speaking of the Saturday stream, is that video going up soon? I had to duck out too early!
And my thoughts have changed about the watch further over that time too. It's going to be a crazy month reviewing this... And the livestream. There have been all sorts of processing issues with it (I did a bit of editing to the show after the fact and RUclips is taking days to prepare it) BUT I reckon it should be up by Friday at the latest. Thank you for the comment!
And at the end of the day, that's one of the big nails in the coffin. How much do you want it? It's bad enough making an achievement, but with these it's like trying to earn an achievement ;) Thanks for the comment Benjamin!
Explorers don’t fall foul to the same hype as the Subs and Daytonas. I waited 3 weeks for my Explorer. I’d get on the list ASAP though as there is conjecture it will be phased out (or made bigger) - it’s the last of the 39mm in the catalogue. Dunno why Rolex are bumping up their sizes. Unnecessary.
I want one of these badly. I was told by an AD today that 2020 inventory is history, and that he thinks "they're going to do something" next year with the model, for its 50th anniversary (??). Anyway, that's what he said.

Whats your wristsize? :)
@@Wa-wk6qk it’s ok - I’m gonna stick with the rivet bracelet now. It’s grown on me! Such a nice watch. Been getting a lot of wrist time. ✌🏼
It has quality, it goes under the radar, ... that "understatedness" is a big plus to me. I love it.
Totally agreed...
give it a couple of weeks more; it is quite extraordinary how they can get under your skin ;-)
It ain’t boring though
I got mine over a year ago and it’s still my favorite. Every time I look down at it I smile on the inside.
And for a watch to make you smile is what makes all the difference ;) I think that is literally the ultimate achievement we can unlock in this hobby. Thank you for the comment, man!
IDGuy Love Your channel!!!
The Explorer is the most overstated "understated" watch.
This has to be used in part 2... I love that. Overstated, Understated sums up these modern pieces extremely well! Thank you Elijs!
I feel I know what you mean but could you please elaborate?
Which is why I sold mine. No regrets. Haha
I concur. Sold mine. Like the nr II though
Just like the Porsche 911 - a timeless design and great value retention.
I have been wearing this watch daily now for 18 years (36mm)
I gives me pleasure to put it on in the morning.
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever”
I look down on the explorer more than on any other watch. It fascinates me every time how subtle, simple and useful it is. And yet it's just the right amount of interesting that puts it above the OP.
I liked that last line about it being "just that right amount of interesting" Fully agree with you there. There's lots of visual complexity to the dial that can go unnoticed. It's going to be an interesting month of wearing to say the least ;) Thank you for the comment, man!
In my eyes its the perfect everyday watch, simple, sublime and sophisticated. And does the job it was intended to do (gracefully).
Well said!
There are many many excellent everyday watches. All that do the job they were intended to do. That is not a unique characteristic whatsoever.
@@atl3630 I'm doing an experiment, please be honest with me. Do you own a Rolex?
So does a Seiko 5. I wear it everyday, it is boring but it does the job. A luxury watch should be offering a whole lot more.
I was wondering weather I agreed with you.. I still don't know. I think I'd want the bezel.
It’s beautiful in its simplicity, I recently added one to my collection and it’s now the first watch I reach for each morning.
Had this watch just over a year. It’s my only Rolex and for me it’s perfection. Other watches in my collection just do not see daylight anymore.
Sorry ID Guy. Seeing the Exp parked next to the Omega, the Rolex obliterates your Sea Master.
So true lol he is acting like this watch is plain. It is superb.
That's an ancient Seamaster. Of course it does.
Still an absolute grail
My favorite rolex
Hey Paul! Cool to see you here!
I agree with your comment on paying more here for the brand than the actual watch itself. Give me a Tudor BB58 everyday.
As soon as the Omega made its appearance, my eyes were immediately drawn to it. And stayed there.
Felt exactly the opposite! I like Omega, but next to the Explorer it looked cheap - too fat and too much polish
This applies across the board with Rolex watches, of course, and I say this as a proud owner of several Rolex watches,
Just six years ago, I bought a perfect example of a pre-ceramic sub for £3.5 and a brand new blue Yacht-Master at a discount from an AD for £6k.
I love the understated refinement of it. It’s the opposite of bling, for sure. To some, it’s unexciting, but that’s what I like about it.
The perfect wristwatch....
I like it so much I bought a spare, which I gave to my son.
He loves it too.
You bought a spare? I know what that feels like ;) Nicely done, man! I've never had a watch change my perceptions and opinions so often in such a short period of time. It's going to be a busy month hahaha!
It wears better than a sub imo
I think, you are wearing the "spare", man! :-)
I felt the same way when I got my Mark 1. I got it for the understated-ness of it. And I wasn’t ready for it.
It has a very delayed fuse - took me 8 days before I actually said "this is a beautiful watch" out loud. Crazy how much this watch tips out opinions and thanks for the comment Tony!
Bravo " Because of the name" Nailed it
Thank you for the objective and honest review.
Nice to see a review that is not just a fluff piece...Your honesty and candor is appreciated...
It looks like the clock in my mercedes E. . I love your omega semaster. Is it comfortable or wobling?
Thanks for your perspective and I tend to agree re: price, value, and aesthetics
My submariner that I bought last year is at the service center right now. It has run -10 since it was new
You said it.....
Ps.: it was your Seamaster 300 Trilogy review that finally convinced me to get it 😉👍🏻
"Next video we will be comparing it to a classic"
The Explorer is about as classic as Rolex gets.
@@IDKline Hahaha like anyone watches a video on youtube and thinks 'I had better watch everything else this guy has ever done before I dare make a comment'
I appreciate you are very defensive, but it really is OK to make genuine comments to stuff that is posted in the public domain.
What is the circumference of your wrist?
I hope the babysitting isn't weighing too heavily on you ;)
It gets better the longer you wear it. This is one of my favorite pieces.
Bought mine in June 2018 and love just as much now as then!
Nice to see the Explorer next to the Seamaster 300. The latter has a lot to offer which the Rolex lacks. (I own the Seamaster 300 Co-Ax and a Sinn 556i.)
6:30 and you got it. Now it is 36mm and some of people complain it is light and small yet I find it perfect even I have not tried it on yet
The omega looks a different type of watch when comparing them side by side. What other omega could you compare the explorer to?
The Railmaster
Keep at it!
4:24 Idefinitely have that feeling with my 36 mm Explorer 1 and therefore its just the most favourite watch I own.
John Smith for me it’s perfect. The 36mm looks very odd on me
John Smith As I mentioned before, for me the watch is perfectly proportioned I wouldn’t change anything.
The 1016 and the Smith looks to have a lot more ”negative space”, looking very empty in the middle, but maybe that just me...
Could the crystal be any more reflective
I reckon they could add an off angle LED somewhere on the rehaut just to make it pop some more, you know? What I want to see is this watch without a standard crystal... Imagine a slight dome / box instead? It'll just finish it so nicely. Anyway, Rolex and their Crystals are (in)famous ;)
IDGuy
I don’t mind the reflective & slightly raised flat crystal. I just tilt my wrist to reduce glare/correct things... I was a little sceptical at first with the modern Explorer in general but after just over a year of ownership I can say that I get it & love the darn thing.... PS thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing the next one👌
@@ID-Guy or some clear Ar coating in the underside.
@@ID-Guy I really like flat crystals, but everyone do have their preferences
Not a popular opinion but I'm not a fan, think it's the font on the 3,6&9, much prefer the OPs
You're not alone on this Jenks. I know more than a few owners who've sold it for that reason alone. Maybe I can include a section about the dial design in the closing thoughts video? ;) Thanks for the comment, brother!
YES! The font choice is horrible. Bring back the original 1016 design!
Right now I'm stuck between if I should get the rolex explorer I or the rolex explorer II polar dial. Love both. Which ones do you guys like better?
Chipping in on people's comments. Watches have diminishing returns, expensive versus a Smiths but cheap compared to a Royal Oak. I think the better question is what would rather have at this price point (assuming you could not pocket the difference). This watch grows on you, to the point where I'm not sure I even need another. A worthy companion that isn't out of place whatever you're doing or wherever you're going.
This is THE watch....I agree, it has to work for you but it really is THE watch. If you only ever own one watch, need one watch, want one watch, this IS the watch; it is classic and all others try but always fall slightly short (IMHO :))
Love your work, thank you for all the effort it must take - we ALL appreciate it.
I’d love to hear your opinions on the new 40mm variant.
Best watch reviews, period.
Want to add it but already own the 40mm AK so going to wait for the new movement update
The movement. I'll definitely be touching on this in the next part of the review series. I'm so hoping that they tighten up the next generation of this model in the few places... but who knows? Thanks for the comment!
@@ID-Guy I think a larger crown like the AK and new movement would be nice. My guess its staying 39mm.
IDGuy also E1 did not get a price bump in 2020 as others did. Strange...I can see this go up to 7k with the next update...
Well balanced critique of this timepiece. Thanks for sharing your views.
Greetings to all. Stay well everybody!
Best watch I purchased. Simply beautiful! how a watch is suppose to be.
This is a plain watch
that you will feel it's plain to put it down
but quite often , you will want to wear it so much because of it's sleek design
I think this is called classic
It's a watch that worth to stay forever in anyone's collection
because you will always want to wear it from time to time
is the lug to lug shorter than your Omega?
It’s hard to beat.
good call but do you like it better than the omega? what's your wrist size? the watch does seem rather large mainly the dial impact on the eyes
Fantastic review 👍 may I ask where you obtained the jubilee bracelet on the Smiths? I have the 40mm. Thanks 🙏
Just curious, why do you wear watches on your right wrist ? You may have answered this before but Iv never seen a video of you talking about it
I am on a waiting list for one but it has to be admitted that there are plenty of equally well made and much better value options around. I suspect that when I get 'the call' the money will have already been spent elsewhere.
Excellent video, thanks 👍 I have the 114270 and prefer the 36mm size but enjoyed your critique very much. Cheers! 🍺
Been wearing the Explorer for the last few days, and realized that the flat crystal makes the watch 11.3 mm in thickness, which I think greatly helps the watch as a great daily. I would not change it for a domed crystal, it was conceived to have a flat profile.
For me this is the only Rolex that I lust after, and I think it is a super watch to add to a mixed collection of other brands.
My only watch is the 36 explorer 114270, amazing watch. Regarding the glare, I think it's signature Rolex look on its sapphire crystal.
did you have a show last weekend? I can’t find the upload
It's still a steel 3-hander... that costs ~$6000 retail. Insane.
Make it 9k new in the free market. Silly
I do not know how many times I watched this video. Today i watched one more time and i am still confused. I like explorer but 1016 so i have Smith's Smith's prs-25 however now 36mm version is available therefore what should i do ?
Hi, it´s a great video... thanks!... can you tell me your wrist size?, do you recommend the watch for a 16.5 cm wrist?
Great video! Great advice too, to think about why you’re buying it and making sure it’s because you actually like it and will wear it everyday.
I like this watch but is it worth going through the Rolex B.S.? Not for me.
And at the end of the day, that's one of the big nails in the coffin. How much do you want it? It's bad enough making an achievement, but with these it's like trying to earn an achievement ;) Thanks for the comment Benjamin!
Same here. Cheers from Switzerland.
Frank H. Best wishes from the US
Explorers don’t fall foul to the same hype as the Subs and Daytonas. I waited 3 weeks for my Explorer. I’d get on the list ASAP though as there is conjecture it will be phased out (or made bigger) - it’s the last of the 39mm in the catalogue. Dunno why Rolex are bumping up their sizes. Unnecessary.
@@montana7749 same for me. I contacted a lot of ads but luckily I had an offer within a week :)
I want one of these badly. I was told by an AD today that 2020 inventory is history, and that he thinks "they're going to do something" next year with the model, for its 50th anniversary (??). Anyway, that's what he said.
