Thank you, Thomas, for all you do to help us out. Is there a brand of MCT oil that you recommend or prefer?
I was taking a brand occasionally until it was gone, then couldn't find it again so bought a different brand and it made me feel sick! I assumed it was an allergic reaction, so gave it to a friend, who had no problem w it.
So now I am wanting to try another brand and would really appreciate a recommendation, if you have one. I won't hold it against you (or anyone) if I react badly to it, lol, but thanks to a commenter here (thank you!), I now know to take it slow - a tsp to start - and build up to a Tbsp, so I'm optimistic.

MCTs and their beneficial effect on Alzheimer's was first discovered by researcher Dr. Mary Newport (she has videos on RUclips) years ago when she desperately sought help for her husband who had Alzheimer's. It worked (though he died later of other causes), and we owe her publicity to the availability of MCTs today. In Alzheimer's, the brain has been starved for years. MCTs become ketones, which quickly pass the blood-brain barrier and feed the brain again. They do not undo damage, but cognition improves. I owe much to Dr. Newport.
And by the way, lay off the Gibbs Free Energy references. In this video it comes off as technobabble and some of us actually know what it is. Otherwise, you are doing a great job--great references and good biochemistry, as far as I can see.
    Cheers

Listen to the presentation by Dr Chris Knobbe on 'Low Carb Down Under' RUclips channel.
He hypothesises that seed oils/vegetable oils are the driving cause of metabolic disease. Listen to his evidence and other presentations there like it, be convinced and throw out your seed oils and consume healthy, natural fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, butter, lard, beef tallow.
      More importantly:
      As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
      Romans:3:10,23 King James Version
Everyone is a sinner, one sin is enough to send you to hell, however God loves us and provides a way to Heaven, through Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ paid the full price for your sin past, present and future. He offers the free gift of eternal life to anyone who puts their trust in him to save them, not in their own good deeds which can NEVER save them.
I have a clear gospel presentation on my channel by a trustworthy pastor. Watch it, understand the gospel and believe it. Get saved today, it lasts for eternity.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

I followed an eating and exercise program in the mid-1990s called Lean Bodies, by Cliff Sheats. His diet was lean meat, low fat and complex carbs. Every week the calorie count was increased. A typical meal was a whole chicken breast, cup of brown rice, cup of some type of legume, and vegetables. Very bland, and not keto. A key part of the diet was slowly adding MCT oil. By week four it was three or four tablespoons a day. So, you were replacing your usual fats with MCT. By week two I was feeling almost euphoric. I've always had low energy, but this had me feeling like Superman. What made me stop was the escalating calorie count, five hundred each week. I got bore-assed with eating all that food, and my Army buddies started to really rib me about the coolers I was hauling to work each day. Still, I've never felt that good again.
Doing very low carb and getting ready to slowly add MCT oil. If it made me feel that good, even with all those carbs, it might help me now.

This may explain something that I stumbled upon. I suffer from ADD and am also Type 2 diabetic. In an effort to lose weight I have been doing Keto, but hit a plateau. In an effort to cut calories I switched from heavy cream in my coffee to cashew milk. I missed the creaminess of it so I added 1/2 a tablespoon of MCT oil. I've used MCT oil in the past but not with this consistency. This still kept my calorie count lower than if I used heavy cream in my coffee. After about a week, I noticed that I had become more focused and my mood had become elevated. I was wondering what was going on. I had not made the connection to this. Now that I watched I suspect that my new ability to focus and new found energy was indeed due to my consistent use of MCT oil. I will continue to monitor myself. Thank you.

I don't know about all the science with MCT OIL, but what I can tell you is this: I add it to my black coffee in the morning and even tho I feel hungry, after about an hour and a glass of water, I can literally go until 3 or 4pm before I eat. And I can walk the dog, do some housecleaning and go run errands and I feel great. I am NEVER in ketosis because I will usually have some kind of carb when I eat, but I would not be able to do much of anything if it weren't for the MCT oil. This I know for sure. Hi Jen, no I don’t. There’s no sugar or carbs. I drink 2 cups of coffee and I put about a teaspoon in each. If I don’t have the Bulletproof I’ll use butter or coconut milk (in the can, not coconut water) it doesn’t stave off the hunger as long as the bulletproof though. But I can at least get to noon. It takes a few days to let your body know, so if you’re hungry don’t think it’s not working. Give it a few days. Also, don’t use a lot right of way or you’ll be racing to the restroom. And I’m not referring to number 1. Lol!

The brain is not using glucose properly, but by having access to another fuel (ketones), even having carbs in the diet, it can do so much better.

Thanks to the health creators on RUclips I have been able to draw a link between all the physical and mental issues I've been having for the last few years (I'm 61) with the higher amounts of insulin I've been taking to keep my blood sugar low to protect myself, I thought, from the most prevalent (most obvious) string of "diabetic complications". Instead, what it appears I did, was introduce an entirely different set of complications. Those caused by too much insulin.
Raise your hands if you're diabetic and DIDN'T KNOW too much insulin could be bad for you (besides weight gain)!
When I got my A1c down to 5.5 my doctor criticized my hyper-focus on my daily blood sugar, suggesting peaks up to 170-190 aren't necessarily a problem. [What about when the peaks don't go down for hours?] This contradicted what my previous PC doctor had told me, citing possible damage to tiny blood vessels leading to complications (Diabetic retinopathy, for example) caused by just such regular daily sugar spikes.
So who do I believe (trust)?
I decided to err on the side of diligence. To continue to try to regulate my daily blood sugars. By continuing to use insulin aggressively and not entirely by diet (some diet. Much lower carbs but not "fanatically" low carb.)
Turns out that may have been a mistake.
I'm attempting to correct this mistake by long-term fasting. Because when I fast I don't need insulin (also when I don't eat carbs!).
The only question now is, is it too late?
    I don't think so but we'll see!

Too much to answer right now. It got more complicated after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. That I’ve pretty effectively handled with megadosing with vitamin D3.
I’ve gone about 99% carnivore for a few weeks now. Stopped taking my insulin unless my blood sugar gets over 170. That’s actually my fasting level these days with almost zero carbs. But I have finally started losing weight again. For some reason, after my cancer diagnosis I couldn’t far more than three days. Literally, my body wouldn’t let me. So I do something more akin to 16/8.
Gotta run. Check back if you have any questions. Happy to share any insights.

Several years ago, before I was aware of anything ketogenic, my attention was drawn to a link, a therapeutic link between coconut oil and brain function, especially with respect to Alzheimer's and other degenerative brain issues. At the time, it almost sounded like some new age fad; but I tend to pay attention and now I'm learning more about it. It seems that the science is catching up to the "folk wisdom". I am not in the least bit surprised. I use "keto elevate" C8 MCT oil powder, a product manufactured by BioTrust in my coffee and my experiences that it really is fuel for the brain and body. I can go out for my morning bike ride, really push, and last until breakfast about an hour after the ride or my session in the gym directly after biking.
The named product is just what I use, it's not a plug, nor do I claim it's better than any other.

Maybe MCT Oil is just less bad or not bad at all, compared to sunflower seed oil. If the sunflower seed oil was the high oleic kind, like almost all Monofats, that would eliminate this possible cross conflict. Regular horrible seed oil sunflower oil, very high in Omega 6s, would do possible inflammation harm. I like and use High oleic sunflower oil, the Trader Joe's brand. It has only 0.5 gm Polyunsaturated fats(mostly O-6), for 12.5 gm Monosat fats and 1.5 Sat fats. Basically very close to Olive oil, but being flavorless, it most like the refined olive oil. The Trader's High oleic is about half the cost of even cheaper olive oils, like 3.99/ltr.

When I would take the L-theanine I would be busy doing work stuff and suddenly it would be 4-5pm. I just didnt feel my normal daily afternoon 'brain fry'. I add MCT oil and L-tyrosine to my morning coffee every day. It really gives great mental effect.

Hey Thomas. I have a question. Should someone with liver damage like hepatitis use MCT Oil?

I watched a video just yesterday that said olive oil helps to heal liver damage, among other benefits. I take 1 Tbsp every morning on an empty stomach with a few drops of lemon juice squeezed on top. It has reduced my appetite for crappy food and helped deal with stress better

@@yvonnecrozier4536 be careful that the olive oil is very high level, real extra virgin....many many are mixed with canola oil etc.....there is much fraud in olive oil market...research it.....these contaminated/fake refined olive oils could be dangerous to liver...especially if already inflamed....bad oils inflame the liver!!

As I make my coffee with green tea, peppermint and rooiboss that's pre- prepared in a thermos, I'm likely into a winner there.
So when I add the MCT thereafter, compound benefits.
And just think, someone told me that my thermos method is just SO wrong. Little do these people know!

That's very interesting information. On the subject of glucose causing cognitive decline, I believe it being referred to as Type III diabetes. Studying that will definitely keep you awake :(

MCT isn't really a supplement. It's more of a food compared to something like ashwaghana, l-theanine, or holy basil.

Not on a keto diet but I definitely have noticed a difference in the way I feel with mct oil in my BP coffee.

I have been adding some regular coconut (cooking) oil and a shot of cinnamon to my coffee off and on for a couple years. I just ground my first Bulletproof coffee beans this week as well as a jar of ghee and MCT oil powder. I'm in it to win it. Not sure what my opinion of the MCT oil powder is yet; I may switch to liquid MCT oils.

I have experienced this. I used to forget so many words in my convos when I was doing 20 hour tastings. I then started on MCT around the AM OR lunch time and I literally was not hungry and I could recall the words I needed to use through out the day.

This is why Dave Asprey made Brain Octane Oil years ago. It raises ketones more than MCT.

Does MCT powder count? Should I only use the oil?
