  • My Blackstone griddle top was looking bad a couple weeks ago and then really bad here lately. I knew I needed to strip the seasoning and rust off and start over, so that is what I did and will show you here.
    I used the following (from Harbor Freight):
    Corded drill
    Wire wheels (various sizes)
    Cup wire brushes (various sizes)
    Shop rags
    Sander
    Sand paper

    My local Walmart left a 36 inch black stone in rain and it oxidized as result. I was able to haggle them to 50% off.$120 for a brand new griddle with some rust on the griddle top. This video helped me tremendously make it look new again. Thank you!!!

      Nice! Yeah, people fret out about the tops rusting. Just some wire brushes or a paint/rust remover on a angle grinder, and it's good as new! Like a bad hair cut.

    good video. i have been a welder for 5+ years use an angle grinder for the large area and the wire wheel for your grease trap and sides it will cut it down to a good 25-30 min. plus you dont need to keep switching brushes

      I actually re-did another one and used the angle grinder with a paint and rust wheel. Wow, worked a lot better. The brush changing was me thinking something else would work better. Playing ping-pong in my mind you know?

    I had the same issue with mine, but I plugged the drain hole and poured vinegar onto the flat top so there was about a 1/4 inch deep and lef tit there for about 2 days, and then wire brushed the rust and crap off...... Went way easier than what you are doing.......

    I just got a blackstone recently and decided to strip and it and give it a new seasoning. I've done cast iron reseasonings since I was a kid, so I thought I could do this. This is basically how I did mine, except I just used the wire wheel. The pencil pusher comment struck home; I haven't really used my hands very much since graduating college and last night I really found out just how long it'd been lol. What I wish I'd had was an angle grinder with a bigger wheel.
    I used grapeseed oil, since that's what I use for cast iron, and while it didn't get black everywhere, it's got most of the surface done. Going to try cooking on it today, and the rest just takes time and some effort.

    • @thehungryhussey
      @thehungryhussey  2 года назад

      I've done this a another time and used a angle grinder with a paint and rust wheel and that zipped the stuff off much quicker. Being a pencil pusher is tough bro. Haha.

    Glad to see the term “jack leg” being used. I coined that phrase myself back in the 90’s. Of course I’m telling the truth. Out of that whole video why would I comment on this guy calling himself a jack leg? I too am a jack leg as I did this same thing to our griddle or whatever it’s called. Completely covered in rust. Been through two batteries on the cordless for about 2 hours. Almost done. Such a pain in the ass. I’ll get it later won’t be uttered out of my mouth when it comes to this grill again. F that. Lesson learned.

    Good video, Hussey. That's the part that scared me when I got my 36 inch Blackstone a few months back, but I figured out a way to make things simple by taking tips from Todd Toven and a few others. My initial seasoning was three or four thin coats of cheap Canola oil, followed by a roll of sausage. After each cook, right after turning off the burners, all I do is gently scrape off any excess debris (and hit any sticky stuff with water), then wipe with a paper towel. Then I take two more paper towels and rub on a thin layer of Canola oil. THAT'S IT! I don't like cleaning either brother, but it takes maybe two minutes to do it that way. Then pop that hard cover on. I heat up on high for 10 minutes before each cook, and it sanitizes the top and starts to burn off that oil. I say keep it simple. :) Good luck with the re-season, looking forward to the video.

    • @thehungryhussey
      @thehungryhussey  6 лет назад +7

      Chris, canola as a seasoning worked well. You could see in that's video much of the spots were hard to come off. The problem was me and I'd cook something with some acid in it and not clean it up well or none at all, and let it sit. Not good.
      Hope I didn't misguided folks in thinking of myself seasoning with lard as not to use canola though. I'm doing lard as really an ode to what our family did back in the day. Just to see how that goes.

    I had to do the same thing 😢. The Blackstone cover let's water sit on it like a pond and the water gets through the cover. Mine looked worse than yours. I used a wire wheel on a grinder then sanded it. That was a lot of work. Now I'm cutting a piece of wood to sit on top of the hotplate on an angle so the water doesn't pool on top of the cover.

    • @thehungryhussey
      @thehungryhussey  5 лет назад +2

      The hard covers are nice too, but yeah, you can also take a small bucket or tupperware to "tent" the soft cover to let rain run off.

I've only had my BS for a few weeks, so it's still working through the initial seasoning I suppose. Regardless of the black stuff, this dish was amazingly good! To put a really smooth, non-stick surface on your Blackstone, try 2 more small steps. Use 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper with water. Once done with that, take 0000 steel wool and finish it off. You'll find it's as non-stick as any cooking surface once you've properly seasoned the top. Good video!

      Hey thanks for the tip my friend. You're probably working on a surface that is just stainless steel and a thick piece of that not a seasoned piece of cold rolled steel. On a Blackstone you want to season it and not seasoning every time.

  • @jimdent351
    @jimdent351 3 года назад +1

    Try washing next time with vinegar. It will eat the rust. If I were in your shoes, I would have laid a towel down across the entire cooking surface and drenched the towel with a 5% vinegar. Then you need to check on it every few hours and rub at the rust spots to verify that you've left it long enough. Once you're happy with the results, simply clean it with soap and water. I've soaked cast iron skillets in the past that were completely covered in rust and after 12 to 18 hours the skillets were 100 rust free. Depending on how deep the rust you have will depend on how long it takes. Additionally, on smaller items like pans, dutch ovens, or smaller griddles can be put in a self cleaning oven to strip away all the old seasoning so you can start over. Cheers and good luck!

    Bro u need to invest in some grill bricks, cash & carry has them. U heat up the grill, throw some oil down, and brick it. We use them every day in the restaurant, works like a charm.

    • @thehungryhussey
      @thehungryhussey  6 лет назад +5

      Funny you say that, someone else just told me about these too. I'm interested in knowing how they can be better than a drill at 1000 rpm with a wire brush? Guess they do work. Well, that's how you learn about things!

    • @ChezJohn
      @ChezJohn 6 лет назад +3

      Well, u use them AFTER your cook so it's ready to go for the next one. The grill will be hot, and the bricks are porous so they really get the tough stuff. Less time cleaning.

    • @jb_stn
      @jb_stn 6 лет назад +1

      Those would probably destroy the seasoning no? Aren't they typically used on stainless tops?

    • @ChezJohn
      @ChezJohn 6 лет назад

      Yeah they'll strip it down to bare metal, but u should reseason anyway. I would check with the manufacturer but, they really are safe.

    • @thehungryhussey
      @thehungryhussey  5 лет назад

      You were probably cleaning a stainless top too, this is a steel top with seasoning on it, so you'd have to be careful with degreaser.

    I love the idea of a griddle like this but I’m not digging the maintenance required to keep a carbon steel (cast iron) surface nice or the work required in restoring it if left alone too long. At one time I thought that Blackstone had a high quality stainless steel version but I cannot find it on their website anymore.

    • @thehungryhussey

      They had a stainless version, but that was on the skirt and other items, not the top. The thing is, if you keep care of it and not neglect, you'll be just fine. You can also zip the old off and start over too at any point.
