      You really need to look into audio processing. They sound 3x as good, connected into a DAC/Soundcard. Then it can get extra power and you can use a better EQ and filter out unwanted hisses and buzzes.
      This can double the treble sharpness and bass loudness. Making it sound warmer and softer.

    Although the omni-directional mode introduces a slight background hiss, I prefer the cripser high frequencies compared to the uni mode (at least, when there is no other noise in the room). The main benefit of the uni-directional capsule is the pickup-pattern, so in noisy environments (or when using a loud mechanical keyboard), I would pick the uni-mode. With some equalization (high frequencie/presence boost) the uni mode might be the clear winner overall.

    I'm ready to turn my channel into Podcast-mode, and am hoping this will make a fun headset as I talk to guests. I'm a sound-guy as it is, so I going with the ModMic Uni and plugging it directly into my mixing board. This takes the place of using a stand-alone headphone-amp. I have no need for the omni-mode that he USB version offers, though I suppose there are time when you would like to pick up the room-sound/ambient noise of your environment (for example, if there was a group of people with me as I podcasted or zoom-called to someone). I don't know what a gaming headset really is compared to a conference call or podcast. But it seems like basically the same thing. Any ideas? - _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_

I tried plugging the UNI into my astro mixamp and it was still pretty quiet. I plugged it into a 3.5mm to USB device and it sounds way better, so going from the original modmic to the UNI both having 3.5. The UNI is louder than the original but still not as great as I thought it would be. Still need that USB device even for the UNI.

    Hi Julian! I write because I have a technical question that nobody is able to solve.
    I use USB mic namely MXL USB.009. It is unique design in terms that it is one of the very few mics that combine USB interface, variable analogue gain and 24-bit encoding (the other seems to be Rode VideoMic NTG).
    The problem I encounter is that unlike most of other "Windows10+USB-mic" users when I plug the mic and set the microphone input level in Windows 10 at 100/100 the signal is WAY too hot. Of course at levels aproaching 0 it is way to low. So I have a problem with proper gain structure and staging. I reasoned that there must be some sweet spot of mic input level in Windows 10, but I don't know where.
    I contacted Curtis Judd for advise and after short conversation we came to the conclusion that I should aim at the level where Windows 10 apply neither digital amplification nor digital attenuation (in other words it remain at some kind of unity gain). But where that would be on 0-100 "slider" we didn't know.
    I tried to figure it out on my own and found out that every Windows has different gain structure of ther input level regulation "slider" and that it is also dependent on whether the device is treated as mic or non-mic (whatever that means, but my device is treated as mic). Next I came across such a thread on microchip forum:
    www.microchip.com/forums/m1008767.aspx
    They try to solve problem with how digital gain in Windows is applied, however on mic with 16-bit interface and no analogue gain control. To my bafflement it turned out that relation between slider position and gain is non-linear which makes proper position impossible for me to calculate.
    They also provide link to Default Audio Volume Settings specs in "Windowses".
    docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/audio/default-audio-volume-settings
    Unfortunately no Windows 10. But what I found there is that on Windows 8 for mics: Default level = 0.0 dB which I aim for! :) and Volume Range = -96 dB ~ +30 dB. If the gain structure is the same in Windows 10 that would explain why at 100/100 signal was too hot. It get +30dB of digital gain. But still I don't know where the zero is. I also don't know why in previous Windows versions bottom level was -192dB and not -96dB and what does it mean for my problem.
    In links I found on this website there were information about Customizing HD Audio Driver Volume Settings: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/audio/customizing-default-audio-volume-settings
    and how sliders represent volume - Audio-Tapered Volume Controls
    : docs.microsoft.com/pl-pl/windows/win32/coreaudio/audio-tapered-volume-controls
    but man! That is WAY too difficult for me to wrap my head around it.
    Maybe you could analyze it and try to calculate or measure where the proper place of the slider is? I tried not to give up, but it just surpass my knowledge level.

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  4 года назад +2

      Hey, there are two thing you can try:
      Go to the Windows sound settings, then click on device properties. Then on advanced device properties and then go to the Level tab. You can right click on the level slider and change between percent and dB. If you change to dB you will see if there is digital gain applied. You would want to set the slider where it reads 0 dB.
      This should be the correct level, but if you want to be sure you can make a small test.
      Turn the windows gain to about 25%. Turn the gain on the mic up all the way. Place your smartphones speaker as close to the mic as possible. Start with the volume of the smartphone all the way down. Play a sine wave with your smartphone and look at the recorded signal. Slowly increase the volume on your smartphone and stop when you can see the signal clipping (the top of the sine wave gets chopped off). Now, increase the windows sound level until your audio level hits 0 dBFS in your recording program. This way you aligned the mics clipping point with the clipping point in your software and this will yield in the best signal-to-noise performance possible.
      Cheers!

    • @FunktionNada
      @FunktionNada 3 года назад

      Good questions. Often you want to choose a mic that is complementary to the frequency of your voice, based on the final sound you're going for. So for instance, if you have a higher pitched voice, you may want to find a mic that is less accentuated in the high range and perhaps more accentuated in the low-mid range. This will help balance out your voice out overall, making it sound full. After choosing the right mic, EQ and compression can do the rest of the work. If you're using OBS, there are a good selection of stock audio plugins.

    Well the USB version does look attractive indeed. But I have a question, since I've never tried a USB mic before.
    How is the latency with the USB mic? My number one worry about mics, is to be able to hear my voice trough my headset, without any latency. What would you guys recommend? Should I use an AMP and plug in both my headphone and ModMic Uni to it, or should I go with a USB instead?
    Also, I've never used an Amp as well, so is there any latency with it, when you want to listen back to your microphone?

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 4 года назад +1

      I bet the latency imposed by the chipset of the USB mic itself will be negligible, less than a USB frame of 1ms worth; however since you're then relying on software loopback, that will introduce quite a lot of latency and is super annoying when monitoring your own voice, multiple times that of the latency caused by USB hardware.
      You can try the software latency yourself, just mute the microphone in the output mixer of your soundcard, then go to the Sound properties on the old Control Panel, find your mic there, and then in the corresponding properties, select "Listen to this device". If you can't live with that, it's over, it's not getting any better once USB is introduced. Usually people just skip monitoring themselves by sound and just trust that they sound fine :D
      Also amp? Do you have some specific product in mind? Because i don't know what it should have to do with latency or a microphone. Purely analogue amplifiers (even Class-D amplifiers which are often popularly mislabelled as digital but aren't, since they're value-discrete but time-continuous) have no audible latency in principle. But then i've seen interfaces etc mislabelled as 'amps' too...

They sound like those 5$ "studio" mics from china, very bumpy frequency response and they lack resolution... the omni sounds a tad better than the uni in those regards, but yeah. Depending on needs either a budget usb condenser mic or a cheap audio interface plus good value dynamic mic (aka not a SM58) will do a much better job at the expense of having a physically large mic. Even mutli hundred dollar lavalier mics sound kinda bad imo sometimes. Really need to spend a lot to get good sound out of a tiny capsule

      of course "real" mics are better than the modmic :D but youd get the modmic cause you want to use a headset and not a condenser or dynamic mic.
      and compared to any other "affordable" headset-mic its one of the best. if not the best.
      i dont want to record a number-1-hit or shit like that. i just want to have a good sounding mic for my gaming sessions :D

      Whole point of mod mic is to have a cheap affordable detachable microphone for your headsets, and not have a designated microphone on a desk area.

      @@OdiumVitae When this 'cheap' is more expensive than an above average gaming headset.

      @@SBBSBBZ if you think $35 for a mod-mic is expensive, i think you should look for another source of income. Maybe look for government assistance
