One of the absolute greatest scenes in any movie: trying to cajole the Baron to give her money to pay her bills (when he is keenly aware it is merely a ploy so she can escape with Armand ), he grants her the money with an admonishment there will be no more. In gratitude, she kisses him gently on the cheek. He responds by slapping her across the face, then abruptly exiting. The camera moves in on her countenance. First she appears humiliated, then angry. Then she slowly looks down at the money she is holding in her hands and smiles, consoled that she can now accompany Armand. Three key facial emotions are expressed in several seconds by a woman who had a long career in silent films and knew how to convey emotion without ever uttering a word. She was probably the greatest actress in dramatic history.
Yes! And you haven't even touched upon the dying scene...and those moments right before when Nanine tells her Armand "Is here". All of those emotions she displays in seconds, starting with disbelief. And I swear she really does appear weak, breathless and dying on camera.
Best acting ever. Greta Garbo is fantastic, when the baron plays to her, while Armand rings on the door. Never have anyone laughed with so much pain and sorrow. Heartbreaking.
Here's the performance that SHOULD have gotten the Best Actress Oscar that year.
Who did get it?
Bette Davis in Jezebel.
It wasn't Bette Davis who received the Oscar that year it was Louis Rainer for The Good Earth
@@AlexMartinez-sc2os oops. My bad.
I'd give it to her for "Anna Karenina". In 1936, we had Carole Lombard in "My Man Godfrey", one of the great comic performances of the era.

This scene alone proves what a great actress Garbo was...not just a beautiful face...

One of the two best scenes in the movie. The other one is when she asks the Baron for money and he slaps her.
@@SandViolet Henry Daniell matches her and then some. Wonderful actor.
"Does my music shut out the world for you, dear?" 😄
That self deprecating laugh at the end when she says it might’ve been the great love of my life is heartbreaking.
Omg Robert Taylor so pretty handsome 😍 he's still newcomer at that time, can play well along with Greta Garbo
Robert and Greta❤❤. rip beautiful people . They don’t have movie stars like Garbo and Taylor anymore 😢😢
Garbo is PHENOMENAL !
