I know this is an older video, but thank you for the explanation! We got some tomato plants this year, and one of them was clearly mislabeled because I'm pretty sure this is what's growing instead of regular cherry tomatoes! I'm excited to try them when they're fully ripe!
Thank you for this video! I found an indigo Rose cherry tomato plant at the Amish market...I thought it was really interesting so I got one. I have several dark purple ones that still have a bit of green at bottom. I googled how to tell if they're ready to pick and I found your video! Thank you for the info!
Thanks for showing when they are ready to pick! Growing for the first time here in the North West UK. most are now turning purple black and thankfully with growing in containers in the greenhouse I am able to turn the container round so get's even amounts of light/sun. They still feel very firm so not ready yet but cannot wait to try them (y)
I think as they start to get a bit purple from the top, it could be possible to harvest immediately and they'll finish their ripening on the kitchen counter or table, just like harvesting slightly reddish regular tomatoes that'll ripen inside the house! But nothing wrong in letting those big purple and red berries fully mature on its vines! 🍅
I planted this 2 years ago. They do take a long time to ripen but they're sweet like sugar. They are beautiful when fully ripe, with a red star shape at the stem end. I ate them daily for lunch. Then my nightshade intolerance really took off and I'm afraid to eat tomatoes!
Thank you, I'm a first time grower of these and the plant is covered with dark beautiful tomatoes but are all hard as rocks. I have 7 other varieties growing as well and only a few are starting to ripen so I figure they will soften up along with all the others. It's just a little deceptive because the color is so intense ones finds it hard to believe they aren't ready.
I am growing a Black Cherry Tomato too, just love the flavour and texture. Great to your ones performing well. Just let you know I subbed your channel, I am really enjoying the community in here. Happy gardening/Farming Marty Ware (Australian Micro Farmer)
Thank you for the info, I was perplexed, when I saw they were black,on how to tell when they were ripe. I will watch for the green bits to disappear and for them to get soft.
I'm really glad that you found it helpful, Megan! That was my whole goal in making this video.....to help a few folks out 😀 Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Thanks for this video...I'm growing them for the first time and mistakenly picked some two weeks ago because they were nearly black...but they are far from ready. I will now wait and be more patient. I live in the UK. Looking forward to them ripening completely now.
You are very welcome! I thought this might come in handy for a few folks that were trying to figure it out like I was. 38.8 degrees Celsius here yesterday. Hope you are cooler there. Hope you get lots of tomatoes this season!
Midwest Gardener I hope I do too! Temperatures never get that hot here! We live on an island of the north Welsh coast in the Irish Sea...so lots of wind! But it's been lovely lately with temps around 24c. That's enough for me! Hope your tomatoes don't dry out in that heat!
24c is just about right. Wish we could have temps like that for a few days. We have a cool front headed our way soon, so we will get a break from the extreme heat. Sure glad.
mine never turned black all over. they’d start out green, then the tops would slowly get darker & darker until they end up black 3/4 of the top then the bottom a dark red. I love them & they taste really good with Thai basil!
As long as they taste good. That's the main thing. And basil just makes them better. We make a salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, onion and garlic. We love it!
Thank u sir ! Because I plant some and see them turn purple and I was thinking something is wrong with them but thanks for your video now I know it’s ok
Thank You. This helpful. This is my first time growing Indigo Rose Tomatoes, and my first question was the same as yours - How do you know when the Indigo Rose Tomato is Ripe? I have some that are pure purple all the way around and feel kind of hard right now - some have purple shoulders - so I'll wait on those. Your video is very clear and helpful. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome! I'm glad that you found it helpful. When I wonder about something, I know I'm not the only one, so I thought I would put this out there and hopefully help a few folks here and there. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a great comment!
Mine are dark, dark purple, about the size of a big cherry tomato. But it's hard as a rock and green inside. II'll watch them for a while longer and see if they change color again.
thank you this is my first year growing indigo roses and i have picked everyone early so far so this was really helpful on my not ruining any more of my tomatoes i have picked 6 already and everyone was to green amd hard and undeveloped so now i just need to give them more time on the vine before i pick them please if you have any more helpful hints please let me know also
Midwest Gardener also thank you and do you have any more good thoughts you can share with me on what to do on growing these i got them because my kids thought it be cool to grow purple tomatoes but this the first year and now i got 17 on my first plant and ruined 6 so far
Well, if they've done pretty well for you up to this point, you probably are doing pretty well. They seem to get a little leaf roll if you water too much. That is about all I can think of. 17 is a decent number of tomatoes. One thing about them is that they are an open pollinated variety, so if you save seeds they should produce plants just like the parent.
Thank you! Before I watched this I picked deep purple tomatoes left about 3/4 on the plant. Seems I picked them to early 😢 Will the continue to ripe if I store upside down? I did leave the tops intact.
grew them once . prolific producer , below average tast/texture. I pulled them up after the first taste and sent them to the dump. With over three hundred great tomatoe varietys the "artisan " tomatoes were a waste of my garden space . Its why I view sites with good info. tks.
Thanks for your thoughts Robert! Much appreciated. They are supposed to be more healthy, but I value taste over nutrition for my tomatoes. I agree......so many more to try.
Thanks for the video fellow grower... Some recommendations: 1st, SNIP OUT ALL SIDE GROWTH. This promotes better growth of the plant overall. They are an indeterminant plant and prefer to remain like that rather than being made into a bush. obviously without human intervention they would grow like that naturally but don't worry about that fact. let them grow straight up. This will allow better LIGHT penetration, and therefore more chance of light getting to front and back of tomato, and therefore, more even blackening of each tomato at the same time. You showed that the tomatoes were going black on the front first. 2nd, prune some of the leaves that are blocking light close to the main trusses. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of great looking, healthy leaves as this helps with sugar production and therefore lovely tasting tomatoes. Pruning all side growth will allow more plants to be grown in less space without compromising yield. 18 inches apart or so. Thanks for the video, I'm just about to start mine and I had great results last year! Though we had fantastic year of sun here in the UK.
Thanks for the tips. I'm glad you had a fantastic year of sun, since tomatoes love some moderate heat and lots of sunshine. We get beyond moderate heat here. Sometimes over 100F, or about 37.7C. Good luck with yours this year. We usually do pretty well with tomatoes. Last year wasn't a very good year though, because we had a cold April, which delayed planting. Then we had a very hot May, which let to poor fruit set. And of coarse, we always have too much wind which also stresses the plants. But we do the best we can. if you like videos on tomatoes, I have a whole playlist of them. 124 videos in fact.
Thank you for this information because this is my first year growing these tomatoes from seed. I was wondering if the slightly curled leaves was a sign of too much of something or disease.
If they are hard when you lightly squeeze them, then they aren't ripe yet. When they get ripe, you will feel the difference. They will feel slightly softer.
I notice your Indigo Rose tomato has leaf curl too. I have never had this problem w/ any of my tomatoes before. Is it the breed? Should I be worried - it looks pretty severe?? Do you have a way for treating this?
Yes, Indigo Rose seems to curl worse than any other tomato I've grown. If it's physiological leaf roll, you don't have to worry. The plant might look funny, but it should still grow and produce a crop for you. Physiological leaf roll is caused by some stress to the plant,a nd the only way to make future leaves not roll is to remove the stress. The leaves that are rolled will never unroll.
@@MidwestGardener thanks! I was afraid I was going to have start butchering my plant to save it or something!😱 It shouldn't spread to any of the others than?
There is a virus that can cause tomato leaves to curl, but it should like yours probably isn't that. I would google it to get some photo comparisons just to make sure, but I think you will be fine.
That is a little odd. Mine start out green, then get a purple shoulder that grows until most of the tomato is purple, but almost all of them have some green that eventually turns a normal tomato orange color.
I know black tomatoes, but not are as black as her. What is the taste of their black tomatoes, sweet and crisp, or rather mealy? But they look very good!

Hello, does it matter if they are ripe or not to save the seeds for next year ? Thanks
I usually let them ripen to save seeds, but if they are close to ripening, you could let them ripen on the counter.
Ok thanks
Would this species work in a hanging tomato pot?
They are indeterminate, so you might have to hang it pretty high to keep it from reaching the ground.
Thank you!

hows this compare to black cherry tomato? what are their big differrences
The Black Cherry tastes better and is more prolific, but smaller.
