I've raised the many red tomatoes almost all my life, They adding beef steak and. Now I have the Brandy wine and Terracotta which are delicious,
Next generation of mixing hybrid from the garden great eating slicers with more productive and healthy growing plants and fruit is what we want. Big Brandy hybrid is first on my dream list and black pineapple, Brad's Atomic grape is what will motivate my garden dreams early spring.
Having a growlight really makes me dream bigger now no limits at the grow centers for me.

Indigo rose grows abundantly in the PNW. I neglected mine for months (underwatered) and both plants managed to put out more than any other tomato plant of mine. I do agree with the mild flavor of them. I have to salt mine to bring out the flavor. The lady that convinced me to try Indigo Rose hates tomatoes with the exception of this variety which is a testament to it's mild, plum-like flavor.

I only grew 1 in a ceramic planter...its just myself eating them, so I can use them in pasta salads. My one plant gave me 5 kg. The variety that I have fallen in love with for flavor is Chocolate Sprinkles...it's a grape variety.

I recommend Blue Bayou tomato has a good tasting and productive "black" tomato. Just make sure to grow them in full sun to help them develop the high levels of lycopene pigment necessary for the jetty hue!

I had the same experience growing Indigo Rose tomatoes last summer and I agree 100% with you on all points.
That being said, I would like to grow an indigo type tomato in future, but one that tastes good and is a good producer.

Good to know. I have a few going this year first time. At least it will add some good color and nutrition. I start my tomatoes early too but have the room and set up to make it work. I'm able to get a good jump once they go outdoors. Thanks.

Good stuff! I don't think they're a bad tomato. They add a blast of awesome color to the yard. But mine always fizzled out a bit early, and just didn't cut it for flavor. Still, I kind of miss them now!

I grew this tomato a couple of years ago, and had the same experience. I thought May be my seed source wasn’t true. Recently I heard Gary Null on his program promoting this variety because of its nutritional value and taste. Having watched your video it confirmed to me that I had grow this tomato and was disappointed with the size, taste and color. I would be willing to try it one more time in a new sunny spot in front of my house but will wait for a source that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg for a few seeds.

how about Atomic Grape? And I am growing Indigo Rose this year so I'll at least get "try it once" out of the way. Happy growing and thanks for the update.

I haven't tried it myself but understand from people who have done so that the pictures are a little optimistic. Maybe a filter applied? ;) Still, I don't want to diss Baker Creek too much. They offer some really cool stuff., and their catalog is just what I need in January!

@@karlsfoodforestgarden6963 Saw a video that said ripeness is essential to the taste of them. And that it was kind of hard to tell when they (Atomic Grape) are ripe. It's probably the same with Indigo Rose. With Atomic Grape they don't turn any "red" but do have some yellow and green. No yellow, not ready. Real firm... still not ready. So I'm gonna be doing some checking better than I have before with cherry tomatoes.

@@karlsfoodforestgarden6963 I heard the same about it being hard to tell when it is ripe since it is a mixed color. If you look at the Bakers Creek catalog you can tell photoshop was used to desaturate everything but the tomatoes and those colors were definitely amped up.

@@SunnySensei Exactly! They're in the business of selling seeds, and I love most of their products. I just think they've gotten a little carried away with the decorative stuff when we really want flavor!

Mine is VERY prolific. About 4’ tall and I would guess 200+ fruit. But it’s blah 😕 Came searching to figure out what to do with it. I have 19 other plants and this one has me stumped. Won’t be on my list again.

That's kinda sad. I've got a couple of them this year, my first with them. They are hanging full of fruit and just keep piling on more. Def not purple tho,, they are the most beautiful deep indigo color on top. Perty like a flower :) Sad they fall short on flavor. I was expecting something good like you said. You've done gone and popped my bubble before I even got to try one. lol I dunno, I may get along with them ok. They might help with my pick and eat on the fly fetish. Tomatoes live hard in my garden, getting their eyes poked out and eaten alive all the time. lol

    • @karlsfoodforestgarden6963
      @karlsfoodforestgarden6963  3 года назад +1

Don't be too sad. They're not terrible, just not as good as some of my favorites. They'll be best if you make sure they're completely ripe, which is NOT when they are at peak color. They pass through the deep indigo and become pretty red at the bottom.

Surprised to hear this. Mine is producing 1000s!! It’s wild. It’s taken over 6 tomato cages. And the flavor is great. Maybe it’s not really an indigo rose. 🤷🏻‍♀️
