Tom has an amazing ability to pull lessons out of people. With Ryan, there are so many, Tom just scratched the surface. Along with millions of people, I am grateful Ryan chose to write Versus diving deeper into American Apparel. Thank you Ryan for being on the show. I plan to listen to Obstacle is the way once more and then actually write you a review.

I just started a new job less than two months ago. Completely different field than what I’ve been in for the last 38 years. It’s hectic to say the least and frustrating as well.
Everything I do is a mistake. It’s like learning how to swing a golf club on the 3rd hole. How am I supposed to learn from those mistakes? Ryan just said it best. Journaling!! I never understood the purpose, why or how. The best 10 second lesson I was ever taught! Thank you!

I basically started reading about 3 years ago. The obstacle is the way was one of the first books along side with how to win friends... 18 months ago I injured my back with severe pains that had me contemplating suicide and I revert back to “the obstacle is the way” (it saved my life) and that’s when the shift finally happened. I found Ferriss Jocko Impact theory interviewing Tim Ferriss.... thank you all sooo much!!

I just completed the Daily Stoic by Ryan and am now exploring more of his work. I stumbled across him on RUclips with a video about how reading Marcus Aurelius' Mediations affected him. I am sixty-two and wish I had come across Stoicism forty years ago. However, back in the '70's I am not sure there was anyone promoting Stoicism in such a way. As I continue to explore the ideas though, I feel I have really found, at long last, an approach to developing a personal philosophy that is practical, straightforward and immediately applicable.

The keys to a good life :-
1.we seem to have a limitless capability to steal time from ourselves
    2. be in the present moment
    3. what do you want an ideal day to look like
    4. step out from your own logic , impulses, and what would a random guy do
    5. Between stimulus and response there is a moment , where you chose who you can be
    6. how to not do something wrong in being emotional, give it time, make the decision take longer

I LOVE the idea of looking at the journey as two marathons! I definitely identify as someone who loves the creative process and I've finally put most of my content together. And now I'm looking ahead at the second marathon and feel just like how Ryan described. Kind of like, wait what?! I just finished a marathon. Can't I relax and celebrate and chill for awhile? What a beautiful way to describe it and oddly enough, even though I know Im just starting the second marathon, having that visual of where I'm at in the race is encouraging and comforting. Though, I have a sneaking suspicion there's going to be another marathon after this one. Ah well. One step at a time. Brick by brick. 😉

Even Ryan reads Amazon reviews. You’re improving daily, and everything you do is going to be directed to create value for others. Kudos to you for being brave in voicing/writing how you feel. Seek to control all that is within you and I have no doubt you will be successful. Take care Xo

;) I've been following Ryan for about a year. Love love love his stuff. This is the first time I heard him speak. His two first points or thoughts or ! Mindsets "Carol Dweck" both shocked me and made me smile. And improved me! I swear. The two things he said within the 5:00 mark...and I'm tapping out. Stopping watching. I want to Meditate on "Philosophy is "How to lead a better life" (note, not poorer, better). And the other was, "I write for a younger me". The biggest mistake I've been making as an author (or many things) is...I'm creating for Me, Now, not You now, or Me when I was younger and needed the "learning" I author. ;) See? I got enough. Love Tom. Love Ryan. True definitions of Men because they are helping ME be a better man.... Steven Palange.

    #2. Starts @ 6:49.....
"Sitting in a chair not doing anything would be doing something."
"If you think that action is the end all be all, you end up doing action for the sake of action."
My husband would really benefit from understanding this right here. Our relationship has weakened because the concept that doing something means literally doing it, action in motion, physically performing a task or job is all he knows. Accomplishing something everyday is a very good habit to have but sometimes it doesn't have to be physical or actionable it could be just as simple and stationary as sitting in a room watch your child crawl around the floor or spending an hour of the day with your wife who has been struggling with depression for 5 years. Unfortunately that is not what he considers an accomplishment.
Another challenge to that is his ADD brain which has a poor command center to begin with. I can say that because I have the same brain but my brain does contain a lot more awareness about these things than his so as difficult as it is to apply certain thought processes to my daily life like forcing myself to slow my brain down and take things step by step instead of cramming it all together trying and failing to multitask, or taking a moment or two to sit down think about what needs to be taken care of writing it out and approaching each item one by one instead of procrastinating and avoiding them until the very last second, I know I am the one who is either going to mess it up or get it done. He doesn't. Sad to say he is the kind who will blame someone else (me), or make a bunch of excuses.
Are there any stoics with ADD out there reading these comments who were at one point like my husband but managed to gain a sense of self awareness and understand what Ryan is talking about?

Ryan is amazing. If you look at all the self help books that are out there, can they all be traced back to stoicism as taught by Aurelius and other ancient philosophy?

Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.

Only 20 minutes in and I've already paused and backed up so many times I crashed Chrome. Another Tow Bilyeu vid goes to favorites.
