I disagree. While the coin item doesn't _stop_ you from frontrunning, being able to get double defense items would make it completely impossible to take out 1st without blue shells or the shock. When you're restricted to 1 defense at a time, the other players can still get you with strategic item play. Plus holding the coin stops you from getting your defense stolen by the boo.
Yo I didn't know you were a fellow Nin10doland veiwer! Also fully agree.
The fake item block kind of served this purpose in the older games. But those didn't feel as bad to pull since you could lay them as traps which you barely use the bananas for since they are crucial for defence.
@@Skuntdilly but doesn't it break on impact with an item once you throw it down?
@Switchkid64no the fake item box doesn’t break on other items that’s was only a thing in mk64 which makes it overpowered. But the one thing the fake item box has a large hitbox makes it easy to trap blind turns with
@@Skuntdilly I suppose. Though the coin also gives you a quick way to recover your speed after getting hit by items
4:39 Honestly, this shop menu really reminds me of the shop menu in Crash Team Racing Nitro-fueled, and i really hope Nintendo does that!
It was also in Chocobo GP and Disney Speedstorm and Nintendo REALLY needs to do it for Mario Kart
Give them an Item Shop to use the coins you collect. Vehicle Parts would be 50 coins, Costumes would be 100 coins, new drives would be 300 coins.
I don't mind coins on the track, but I don't like them using an inventory slot.
So like they did in mario kart 7
I COULDN’T AGREE MORE! Get those coins out of the Item Box!
couldn't agree less. Just time yourself driving literally any straight distance, and you'll easily be able to tell how much they boost your speed. And the coin item is even more important. It's kinda the band-aid that holds the race together. Do you understand how broken 1st would be if all they pulled was greens and 'nannas, making them impossible to hit?
@Switchkid64 - Ha! How could you seriously compare all of what you said, to the cc speed number, what’s even the point of coins serving as a speed boost? They’re just flat out useless, throughout out all Mario Kart entries not including Tour, because of the fact that you can use them to buy stuff in it’s in-game shop.
Also, every time I am reminded of Coins being an item in Mario Kart 8 is just infuriating, complete waste of an item slot.
@sonally5626 "wHaT's EvEn ThE P0inT oF C0inS sErViNg as a Sp3Ed b0OsT?" don't make me laugh! This is a racing game, so on a fundamental level more speed=more likely to win. Are you stupid? It's nothing like the change in CC either, as it's actually an increase to your *max acceleration,* rather than your base speed. Anyone who says they're useless clearly has yet to participate in any sort of official tournament, namely because of how dependent the mere concept of _sandbagging_ is, which is also something that's almost certainly alien to you.
And yes, there's no denying that they're a basic item, and I would love to see a game with, like, twice as many items in it, but as per my previous comment, I don't think you understand how broken first place is without it, in the worst way possible on multiple fronts. A coinless world allow first to pull nothing but shells, bananas, bombs and horns; letting them frontrun the entire race with almost no penalties at all since it's so hard to get rid of their protection and still have the item to actually hit them. Moreover, it removes an entire element from competitive play, as without almost a nothing item you can't trick your opponents in 2nd, 3rd, and the like by making them think you're unprotected, then pull protection out of nowhere. Or the opposite, them not trageting you because you succesfully bluffed a protection item being behind your coin. Or a boo stealing what is again almost a nothing item and letting you keep your protection (and that doesn't make for broken frontrunning as mentioned above, since you still only have 1 item and 2nd can have 2). Next time do at least a little *thinking* and see what the good players actually think before saying something idiotic like this, okay?
I disagree with this video, I feel like they should just make only 1st place get them and lower the chance of getting it
@ ^this right here
Coins were the worst in MK8. When Custom items was introduced, I removed the coins. The main issue is that they provide no value other than to boost speed but you can only have maximum of 10. 1st place with 10 coins and need to defend 1st. Giving you coins is like donating to Elon Musk
This is confusing me i don't know why people are calling this Mario kart 9 when Nintendo themselves confirmed that Mario kart tour is the 9th mainline Mario kart game
FR
They never ‘confirmed’ and MK9 is the safer name, it probably won’t be called that
I’m really hoping they add costumes to the game like Mario Kart tour did! Would love to see you make a video on that topic!
Would make sense. I think each charackter will have 24 costumes each, so multiple/all people can play as the same charackter.
Funny you mention Tour because that's what MK9 is
Coins are staying, but the shop sounds so cool
Great Video, but I could not disagree more with you here. Coins are GAME CHANGERS in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Everyone underestimates how much of a difference that they make when you have all 10. I have won COUNTLESS races just because I have more coins then my opponent. Having the coin item is also helpful for Boo defense, as it can keep your more powerful defense items safe. With that being said, I do like the idea of them doubling as a currency to unlock different things kind of like Mario Kart Tour, but they are a very important item to winning, especially in competitive play. Great video none the less. PS, because I want to be that guy: (Nerd Accent) Urm, you pronounced JPG's name wrong, its JG Give-ner. :)
OK, Why? Coins are an important part of the Competitive Scene as the Speed Boost having Coins gives you REALLY Matters. I've Been Watching Shortcat's Videos and plenty of his Races came down to Coins. He got Combo'd in a few Races and ended up in 10th, 11th or 12th as he wasn't able to collect enough coins to catch up.
Yeah that’s what I was going to say also I watch short cat too
as a JPG veiwer who's also tried my hand at a few tournaments, I wholehartedly agree. Can we please try to ratio him here?
If you want coins to give a competitive advantage and be a strategy to win, you are boring lol
@ThePlushpaw crazy that there are people saying this despite a coinless game being automatically the more boring one to play.
@Switchkid64 not when we could have more actual items added instead.. bro.. the coin is like the bran flakes of Mario Kart, its just bland, uninspired and should be left behind.
1 coin is a 1/2 of bar of speed in the speed stat you see when you click - or +. Also that makes the slowest combos good because with coins is gets quite fast and you have a top tier mini turbo stat. If you don’t know what that is… watch shortcat
Travis Scott dropped a new single “4x4”. If Switch 2 has Spotify, you can listen to it while playing Mario Kart 9.
Coins should be used to improve your odds a better power ups. No coins...just get bananas
Smash is better than multiversus
agreed
I agree but, why bring them up?
you can use them strategically for instance you can have a coin and hold it just in case if a boo steal steals it. On top of that, you can hold the coin so other players won’t know what your other item is.
Ever since I played Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled on Switch I really want the next Mario Kart to also have an ingame shop to buy new characters, skins and kart parts
Actually in mario kart 8 the coins is what unlocks new cars, tires, and parachutes. It takes around 3,500 coins to unlock everything
No more coins in Mario kart Nintendo really need to think of a new way maybe a shop you can use all of your coins
I agree it was an old mechanic that was removed then brought back decades later and I ask why?
Honestly being in the middle place is tedious not because of coins being in the roulette, but from the LACK of coins...
Guess what else is also happening in the middle place? That's where the majority of items are being used and thrown at every direction! And as the chaos ensues, you're practically stuck with 0 coins the whole race, with hardly enough speed to catch up to the 1st place racer...
Imagine toads as a NASCAR pit crew in Mario kart!
We even got a preview of how they would look in Tour.
What if the new Mario Kart had an announcer with voice lines like in the title screen, when selected a character, starting the countdown in “3! 2! 1! GO!”, and even something like “AND THE WINNER IS…[_____]!!!”
GPDX had an announcer like that.
After playing old Mario kart games, I quite enjoy the coin. Makes it possible to actually catch up to first. It’s really annoying when first just keeps getting triple bananas and shells
Instead of having to grind the game out, make the unlocks unlockable through mission mode weekly challenges. Instead of grinding for the shop item, you push yourself to complete the challenge and feel good about earning the unlocked item
Face it pal, coins will ALWAYS be a mainstay in EVERY Mario Kart game and thus are here to stay, weather you like it or not, so DEAL WITH IT.
The third option would be (kinda) similiar to CTR Nitro-Fueled; Coins don't appear during races but are simply given at the end depending on your placement, the first few hours playing online each day gives you a bonus, playing during the weekends also gives a bonus, coins are used as an in-game currency to buy customisation options. They could also implement a rotation of challenges (daily, weekly, etc.) that give you extra coins by completing them.
Mario kart 9 needs to add taxes
💀
True
a mod that removes them would be cool
Coins as currency could be the mechanic of glowy box with eyes, which would explain why everyone ignores it during the reveal
I just hope Mario kart 9 won't have micro transactions written all over it 🙏🙏🙏
I don't want a shop. I hated the shop in mario party. I don't want this in mario kart
I think if they do a coin reward based on placement, they should do a smaller amount for cpu races so kids and people who aren’t too good can get coins, and online would be higher rewards because of it potentially being harder with real players
I would honestly be okay with a live service that gets updated regularly and paying real money for skins and new characters and kart parts. It would be different than Mario Kart Tour because it wouldn't be Gatcha. You would get what you pay for, not for a CHANCE to get it
No one cares about any switch 2 with nintendos recent video, hatsu miku is taking over rocket league
one thong that they need to do. remove the darn 10 coin limit. let me collect at least 100 coins per race so i can really make fast progress for the 5k coin collectable.
Fully disagree. They are pretty useful for max speed with 10 coins, helps you unlock stuff depending on the overall coins you have, and is used as boo bait if boo tries to steal from you. They are perfectly fine.
Also, fully disagree with the pitstop motif, there is no evidence about that existing, and turning them into actual currency will kill the game because then they'll think about micro-transactions and will make it just as bad as unite! The coins are ok as is!
Meanwhile I do agree tat Coins are useful in a race, I disagree with a shop being a bad idea. It would give them one more function.
The coin item isn’t good it’s not even good balance 1st item like the fake item served a better purpose in the previous game. The coin item is only useful in coin runners. The coin where an interesting way to unlock stuff but it makes it too easy unlike Wii and DS
@ *"The coin item isn’t good it’s not even good balance 1st item like the fake item served a better purpose in the previous game."*
Fake Item Boxes are easy to avoid.
Also, they are yet another defensive option First place has, meaning that, with two Item inventories, First place can have no fear of ever getting hit.
*"The coin where an interesting way to unlock stuff but it makes it too easy unlike Wii and DS"*
Dude, unlocking stuff in both was boring. Only the DS's Mission Mode gets a pass.
@ true but Nintendo can always make it look like a real item box just that it would not be overpowered as it was in mk64. Plus the fake item box has a large hitbox and u can hit other players with it hide it behind item box or blind turns. The only reason Nintendo falied to make it less obvious even though they tried in Wii
In mk64 the fake item was broken to the point u can block other item except for the blue shell with it that’s only because they code it to have a collision behavior to interact with other items. Which was a huge mistake on the developer behalf
I think the in game currency and or the use of pit stops being places to exchange coins for items. Those sound really cool to me
mk 8 is not perfect
annoying ai that abuses the player
useless baby characters that no one asked for
mii's? why?
too grindy for a new car part
no samus?
and very little battle maps
now *that* is what people need to actually talk about. How did we get 48 new racetracks on top of the existing 48 but 0 new battle courses to add to our measely 6???
I agree, while coins are at an extent useful, you will only care about it when your an absolute pro or competitive player who’s after the best of the best Stats.
No one besides that will care as much
cope
@ cope for what?
No one really cares for coins.
If they return, I mean, Ok I guess.
I’ll still win even with 0 coins
I disagree, because coins in MK8, "for me” can be used for strategy in game and online.
Well, Donkey Kong's old design. Not the new movie design.
4:46 THAT BE INSANELY PERFECT
I dont understand why no content creator talks about this, but i think the next gimmick is going to be turbo as in manually boosting like in other racing games AND maybe that weird flame looking thing can recharge your turbo
Ok the shop is a cool idea but I like coins on the track and the speed-edge you get, it's more useful than you think. An as an item they serve a rebalancing purpose.
I like the "use coins as currency to unlock things" idea. 😀
I hope that no matter what they choose, the coins are not in item boxes. I don’t care if they’re useless and they’re just laying on across the track, though I do want them to be useful in a shop. But please don’t make the shop limited edition items. Make it so all characters, costumes, carts, vehicle parts, and everything is available at all times. I hated crash team racing when I had to login every day to see if my favorite character was available to buy yet because that game shop just cycled. Hated it!
A shop would be awesome also adding to the idea of coins being given to you as a reward what if you get bonus for things like drifting or tricks or something like splatoon 3's medals where if you did more of something like using items you get some coins but your shop idea is still cool by itself
I believe the coins should serve as in-game currency, allowing players to purchase kart parts for character upgrades, similar to the mechanics in Mario Kart Tour.
Actually love the pit stop idea, I’ll make a video on it in the coming days on my other page. I’ll shout u out
6:59 if there are 24 racers then that would actually be perfect, 1st gets 24 and last gets 1
But if there is no coin item for first place they will be untouchable.
I’m fine with the coin item provided it’s double items, as it’s a good nerf to first place
The new Mario Kart is not gonna have what any of us want in it....
My opinion:
Keep the coins, just delete them from items.
Bring back the old progression system from Mariokart Wii so skill matters not farming the same track over and over.
God bless❤️✝️
*"...so skill matters"*
If by "skill" you meant playing as Funky on a bike, sure.
If they add non Nintendo characters like splatoon, link, rob, or pac man, I can see them being a higher price well besides villager
Also I think it would be cool if you start with 8 or 12 characters and have to unlock/ buy the others and the options for amount of players during race (8,12, 24)
So far I haven’t seen any coins on the trailer. Except there are four shiny things on the big highway in front of the two speed boots past Yoshi’s diner. Can’t tell if they’re coins or not. But so far, no coins.
Coins honestly is such a weird item throughout the franchise's spinoff.
I think the third idea of coins being used as in-game currency is a really good idea, and I would hope to see that implemented without any transactions involving real money. I think my best idea is that coins should be used in a way that CTR used them, once you have 10 coins, your items get powered up. Your green shells could become red shells, bombs would have bigger explosions, a golden mushroom could be a platinum/diamond mushroom, etc. And that would also mean that you wouldn't get a coin as an item. I don't think they should speed you up because that would make it easier to break away if you get into first, especially if you lose coins if you get hit, you'll often get hit more in the middle of the pack. Maybe it would be best if you never lost coins during races and have the coins in more tricky spots so that you have to work to get 10 coins, even if you're in first. Coins are a great idea for Mario Kart, but I think 8DX executed it poorly.
Coins are actually quite balanced in 8DX. They prevent first place from having two defensive items, aren't hard to get (so going max speed is quite simple) and they help block Boo.
@@toumabyakuya And that's the philosophy I strongly disagree with. It's frustrating getting a coin as an item when second place gets triple reds all the time. Using them to prevent your other item getting stolen is fine, but the Boo is just frustrating in general, so it's a win-lose. And you definitely shouldn't get coins as items when you already have 10. Coins are balanced in a way, but still feel very unfun and restrictive to the player.
@ *"It's frustrating getting a coin as an item when second place gets triple reds all the time."*
Now imagine if First place got two stacks of Greens or Bananas. Imagine how hard it would be to beat them.
*"Using them to prevent your other item getting stolen is fine, but the Boo is just frustrating in general, so it's a win-lose."*
I do not get how this is a problem for the Coin?
*"And you definitely shouldn't get coins as items when you already have 10."*
Again, that would just make First place too strong.
*"but still feel very unfun and restrictive to the player."*
This is better than the straight chaos that was the competitive of Wii.
@@toumabyakuya I do prefer how Wii plays, I think Wii was more strategic and had more depth than 8DX does. There's still depth of course, but it feels more shallow in comparison. Wii is typically more chaotic and unpredictable, which is what MK should be. 8DX feels much more predictable and item-spammy. It'd be easier to beat players in first if they didn't get speed buffs to begin with. Also, first gets superhorns anyway, which I also think shouldn't be allowed. The boo isn't an issue with the coin, it's just an example of how keeping the coin is artificially strategic.
@ *"I think Wii was more strategic and had more depth than 8DX does."*
What "strategy"? You just had to use Funky on a bike and that's everything.
*"Wii is typically more chaotic and unpredictable, which is what MK should be."*
No, it shouldn't be. I loathe how, whenever I am first place, people will go and chain me till I am in last place. That's no fun at all. Only a masochist would say that it is.
*"8DX feels much more predictable and item-spammy."*
That's a good thing, it shows that there's balance.
*"It'd be easier to beat players in first if they didn't get speed buffs to begin with."*
But that would bring back the problem Wii had with most players using the same character/vehicle combo.
*"Also, first gets superhorns anyway, which I also think shouldn't be allowed."*
Why? The main use of the Superhorn is to destroy Blue Shells.
*"The boo isn't an issue with the coin, it's just an example of how keeping the coin is artificially strategic."*
It is still proof of the strategy you love so much.
Yeah a coin should be secondary to the items used as weapons or speed boosts.
I don’t care if the coin make it to the game long as it’s not on an item box 😒
Have a shop would be nice to have in Mario kart. I hope they remove the coins item from the game and place the fake item box over it. Unless Nintendo can remove the 10 coins cap limit would improve the game so much that the coin item would be useful in a way to get more speed otherwise it’s was executed poorly in 8. Where in SMK MKSC and tour u can get more then 10 coins in a race
I would like the coins to add up like credit, land be able to buy new thuff or upgrade your cart.
Man I love coins on tracks.
all they need to do is make it if you have 10 coins they wont give you any more.
That would meant that first place not only has access to their Max Speed, but also to two defensive items. In other words, they would always frontrun the race.
WHAT THE HECK BRO NOO!!!! for me I want coins, especially the fact it could unlock new type of karts, it's obvious that it may be a staple since it debuted in Mario Kart 7 and even lasted in MK8DX
I like getting coins from the track/air/water and coin is a Mario games thing so I want them in he next Mario Kart game but I don't want them as a item to get in the item boxes. I don't want pit stops in races or any other reason to stop in races. I don't want to unluck things I want everything to be like MK8D which is already in the game till DLC like with getting racers/tracks later.
If they do add a shop, they should add different types of coins (and lose the whole speed boost thing). The normal gold ones are worth 1, blue could be worth 5, and red are worth 10. There could also be Star Coins that can be used to upgrade a vehicle part you already have, or certain characters stats
Last thing we need is to add "grinding" to a racing game. Also, the speed boost should stay.
@toumabyakuya I never said the parts would cost that much, and you'd only need one star coin to upgrade something about a racer
@ However, that would still change the meta-game from "driving skills" to "Mix-maxing all stats prior to racing". Basically, picture the Pokemon competitive scene.
@@toumabyakuya hmm... You got me there. But I think I might have a solution. There's three star coins on each track, but they don't respawn, which will fix the grinding issue a little bit. As for character upgrades, I think they'd only have three upgrades, each one unlocking items only they can use, they can have plus sides (like taking out three racers at once) and downsides (like slowing down the player a little bit). It'd be like Mario Kart Double Dash
@@sonicexe66613 *"There's three star coins on each track, but they don't respawn, which will fix the grinding issue a little bit."*
It wouldn't, at all. The competitive scene would just analyze all the tracks to see which one gives you its three coins the fastest and then farm said track till all stats are maxed out.
*"I think they'd only have three upgrades, each one unlocking items only they can use,"*
Now this would have even more issues. Items would repeat too quickly causing an item bloat problem, with the only solution being to have very few characters.
Maybe you could have an item shop in between races on Grand Prix.
1:00 EXCUSE ME HOW DID YOU SAY HIS NAME???
Meanwhile I disagree with the Coin being an useless item in-race (it is actually quite useful not only to get speed, but also to hold off Boo), I agree with the idea being improved upon and I have two games as examples: Crash Team Racing and Sonic Riders.
Let me start with Riders because it is simple. At the end of any race the game adds any Rings you got in the race (plus a bonus based on which place you finished the race on) to your bank account, then you could use them to buy items in the shop. Mario Kart 9 should do this.
Then there's CTR. In this game when you get 10 Wumpa Fruits (the currency of Crash) all your items become stronger. MK9 could do a similar thing. Green Shells evolve into Red ones (or even Blue ones if you are close to last place), Super shrooms turn into Golden ones and so on.
I think that’s also why a lot of the time it makes boo useless because now someone else is getting the coin lol
@@Nin10doland And that's a good thing. Usually the person that used Boo wont have 10 Coins, so what they are getting is tantamount to a permanent Shroom.
@@toumabyakuya the speed boost is so minor and the odds of not getting hit and losing them within 10-15 seconds are slim to none, getting a coin from a boo 95% of the time will do nothing for that player
@@Nin10doland Something tells me you are a casual player.
The speed boost is minimal with only one Coin, however, the closer you are to 10, the faster you are.
Also, if you thought the odds of not getting hit were slim, now imagine how common it would be for a first place with two items to not get hit.
6:50
that's vr points

Mario Kart 10, not 9.
Fully agree with you. While yes they might be useful for speed running, they are the WORST and most ANNOYING item in Mario Kart History.
Do you understand how broken 1st would be if all they pulled was greens and 'nannas, making them impossible to hit?
What is even the point of coins you only get that in first place which is useless, unless you can use it to buy new carts
I would like to see pit stops but you just drive on the side and drop off coins but you get to keep driving !
As they are used now in MK8 deluxe, do they serve a necessary purpose? In terms of game desire, are they helping the balancing? Most other Mario Kart games have not had them at all so was there something wrong with the balancing with no coins?
Uh, yeah. Remember Wii and the Funky domination it had?
@ design* not desire. But no, the Wii is the only MK I have never played.
@ Then you don't actually know what you are talking about.
@ if 1 character was the problem, that seems like an issue with the character design in terms of their stats. I don’t see how coins are the only solution.
@ That was just an example of how bad the competitive scene was back then.
The Coins fixed that by eliminating the need to use one single character and making more characters viable.

WHOS EXCITED FOR SWITCH 2?!
I just don't like that it looks so simular to Switch 1. We waited nearly 8 years to see the next console and all we got is basically the same thing but just with a few changes. It just wasn't really what i had hoped for…

Um dude you use coins to unlock karts and parts in mk8 and it has been like that since the wii u. Coins are not used just for speed and to look at. What are you even talking about lol
coins boost your speed. The more you have, the faster you go. time yourself driving down literally any straight part of a track and you'll see how much of a difference it actually makes
@Switchkid64 yeah I know that lol. I have been playing mk since the snes version lol. What I was saying was coins are also used to unlock stuff in mk8 not just for speed and stats
you watch nintendo yet piratedknucks

I agree, what do the coins even do, they had it in Mario kart 8 deluxe, Mario kart 8 wii u and Mario kart 7
At least mk7 didn’t feature coins as the item to use
@therealjaystone2344 true, but there is 2 more things I want in Mario kart 9: 1st: when looking back towards the character you play as I want the character to look forward like in wii u Mario kart 8 and Mario Kart wii and 2nd: i want the end credits to be similar to Mario kart wii.
bro coins are often *the* determining factor amongst people who are actually good. @Switchkid64 ya that would be insane, In a not so good way
Unlockables by winning Grand Prix cups. Not by collecting 9000 coins. It's ridiculous.
They can keep the coins in Mario Kart, as long as they’re not part of the item roulette boxes.
That's the only way to recover them. If the only Coins available were those in the track itself, competitive players would start the race slow on-purpose to get as many as possible and then they would try to protect them as much as possible.
REMOVE COINS I HATE WHEN IM IN FIRST AND I NEED DEFENSE ITEMS THEN I GET A FAUKEN COIN!!!
This would be crazy and really cool
