    That's quite funny because I've never known that someone's already invented such a way of shooting and invented it by myself a month ago due I don't have a stabilizer or even rig. But you talk about the greatly important details like "don't lay two legs on your shoulders to escape the shocks while walking" etc., that I didn't think about. So, thanks a lot! Subscribed.

    Footage looked amazing! I used to just lift my entire tripod by the center column with an A7 on it (before 1-handed gimbals became a thing) The weight seemed to do a good job of stabilizing it too from what I remember.

    before I got a stabilizer, i used to just hold my camera attached to my "mildly heavy tripod" which helped quite a lot in taking out the camerashakes. not as good as using my mechanical stabilizer but pretty good

    I don't think this is something I've considered before, nice idea! It's good because tripods are much easier to come by than other types of gear. In a pinch someone could go to a big box store to get one if they needed to do impromptu video work.

    I have found for me what works best for me is to use a top handle, hold the top handle with one hand, and then lightly support the lens with my second hand for walking shots. I'm using a nikon z6 with an older 20-70mm zoom that is heavy, and when I shoot in 60fps I get really nice steady footage. This doesn't work for with an older 35mm lens that's light. It does take some practice.

    I appreciate the fact that you didn’t also say to “shoot at a fast shutter speed then slow down in edit” as way too many gimbal users do while trying to show off how great the gimbal is (defeating the object)

    • @BrandonLiUnscripted
      @BrandonLiUnscripted  4 года назад

      Exactly. You can't shoot dialogue in slow-mo. Most movies are full of dialogue. Even most vlogs are full of dialogue. Slow-mo will only help you cheat your way out of a few situations. Learning to shoot smoothly at 24p is a basic necessity as a filmmaker.

    • @BassPlayerAvailable

    Thank you so much, this works really well! I've previously tried using an extended tripod as a kind of shoulder mount, but when walking with it I had it on my shoulder and - just like you said - the vibrations from the walking were transferred over to the camera, and it was shaky as all hell. I never thought to balance it and hold it in the air, really great idea!

  • @SimeonKolev
    @SimeonKolev 4 года назад +9

    The tripod - glidecam is an old trick but when you master it - yeaah :D. I preffer the tripod to be more on top of the camera it makes the movement more pleasing for me. When on top it moves differently side to side. When the camera hangs under the point of the hand holding it is like in a cradle and it swings smoother or at least that is what is happening in my hands.
    Great vid again man!

    • @SimeonKolev
      @SimeonKolev 4 года назад +1

      @@BrandonLiUnscripted
      Well in that case it is impossible. :) But I shoot mostly from lower point of view or for eye level I use two legs on my sholders. Also another thing - tripods with heavier legs are balancing better and easier. And if you reverse the center column you can use one of the legs as a top handle.

    • @SimeonKolev
      @SimeonKolev 4 года назад +1

      @@kevinkino400 Not really it is a very much improvisation method because different cameras and tripods behave differently. But there are two ways that I use for holding the camera under my hand and they both work best with heavier tripods (1.5kg+) and the legs must be able to open more than standard. You either spread two of the legs forward which will be a problem if you are using ultra wide lens but allows you to go easier from lower to higher position of shooting or the other way is to reverse the center column and mount the camera between the legs with one of the legs right on top of the camera. I use Velbon Sherpa 600R most of the time and Giottos which is lighter one and nicer but I do not have the model anywhere written on it.

      You’re saying it becomes a steadicam if I make it bottom-heavy? Curiosity to try that

    • @ShootMyMonkey
      @ShootMyMonkey 4 года назад

      @@BrandonLiUnscripted In effect, yeah. The basics of how Steadicams (without gimbals and armatures) work is just a counterweight. As long as you don't grip it with a rigid death grip, the counterweight essentially damps the finer movement.
      If you look up a guy named Johnny Chung Lee, he did a so-called $14 Steadicam, but on his site, he goes into more depth on the theory.
