Another flashback video! Taking a look back at lens some love and some hate. You can always find them in various mounts on ebay. Love it or hate it, it is the most unique and artistic lens I have ever owned.
The Canon dream lens 50mm f/0.95 has a brown tint. This tint is the result of the radio decay of the radioactive thorium oxide. The brown tint didn't exist originally and can be removed with the use of sun's ultra violet radiation for some days.
Until 70's the thorium oxide was used for its impressive optical properties. However it is slightly radioactive and that creates a small scandal. Nothing very dangerous of course. After 80's Thorium oxide was mostly replaced by the safe Lanthanum oxide which has inferior optical properties.
Even today many very bright lenses with thorium oxide are superior and are praised by many photographers. Some lenses are more radioactive, some are less but the brown tint is usually an indication of radioactivity.
Q: Why is this lens called "dream lens"?
A: It is soft from center to edge and even if it's in focus, it seems like it's out of focus, exactly what you would encounter in a dream.
Just kidding.
One of my favorite lenses is the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4, what has been called, “the cream machine”. I’m not impressed with the bokeh on yours. Sorry.
And don’t feel too bad about selling it. Cheap lenses are available everywhere.
Yea the bokeh looks garbage.
Is it just me or the women in the photos are moving
Great lens, but for playing around I would probably go with the Mitakon Speedmaster 0.95, not a perfect lens, not the build quality of the Canon of course, but only 800 bucks
I’ve owned this lens since 1982, its wonderful, however the look can be digitally duplicated...
FYI, the term "dream lens" had nothing to do with its optical performance, nor was this the only lens so named. There were three lens called "dream" lenses. this 50mm, a 100mm 2.0, and a 35mm 2.0. The name came form an advertising campaign: " Every photographer "dreams" of owning these lenses." In contrast to the 50mm 0.95, the other lenses fit the normal LTM mounting and are very good lenses - two of the best RF lenses Canon ever made.
Your pictures are sharper than I expected. Zeiss made a one-off joke response to that lens they called the Super-Q-Gigantar 40mm f0.33, where Q allegedly stood for Quatsch which is German for nonsense.
I guess I'm on the side which loves the bokeh. That's just insane how beautiful it is!
Russell Ahmed me too. I love it so much I went out and bought one!
Aw man I was hoping you filmed some 4K footage with it. That’s a crazy awesome lens!
Well, 3k for blurry images? You should try Lensbaby Velvet 56. Artistic wide open and sharp closed down. A fraction of the price.
2:55 this is framed like a blob of blur
Is this dreamy lens aperture at 0.95 in all images?
One of my all time sought after lens... I would love to pair it with my Oly M1.. still I cannot afford it...
Keep the flashbacks coming!! Amazing rendering off this one
I wanted this lens for my Canon 7 but after comparing the bokeh of this lens to other 50mm f/0.95's, I realized that I'm not a fan of over-corrected (aka sharp, bubble, or pronounced-edge) bokeh. Though I wouldn't really call this a true "bubble" bokeh, it definitely is pronounced-edge bokeh. This type of bokeh just looks too busy for my taste. I love the shallow depth of field though.
I'm with you on that. I'm not a huge bokeh snob but those hard edges to my mind create a pattern you can't help noticing and being just a bit distracted by. Unless that's the effect you want I tend to see it as a flaw, and move on when I see it in a review.
Love your flashback videos, please keep posting these.
They still cost$2500 WOAAA mehhhh
Note: US$2500. That is cheap compare to Canada! C$3363.75 ----- OUCH!
I have a nice copy.
Shoot it on a canon7, an S1r, and recently a 50s.
Hard vignette on the 50s shooting full frame.
Still my all-time favorite lens.
Want super sharp documentation ?
A cell phone will do better.
Want to make an image that just feels like art?
You won’t do better than this, especially when you somehow nail focus on a film portrait.
Canon didn’t make this lens so expensive today, photographers did via demand.
Lenses can't be "artistic" only human beings can.
Mugshot Lenses can allow humans to fully realise their artistic visions, which I’m sure he means.
Cole Smith
Cole, " creative lenses" is advertising agency speak like creative cameras, pianos, guitars, etc. inanimate objects can't be creative, only their owners.
heaven background
Beautiful photos!
Is 50mm f/1.4g look dreamy lens too lol? 50mm f/1.2 Ai-s is dreamy.
There were four companies ever commercialized 50mm f0.95 lens, Leica > Meyer > Zhongyi > Canon by today's quality standard.
Meyer and Zhongyi has the same optics
Got the Mitakon. It looks a little boring, too smooth bokeh, the look is not that unique compared to others.
If you love this one, you might enjoy the Canon FL 55/1.2. It does have some purple fringing wide open in high contrast areas (as does a ton of legacy glass), but in low contrast indoor situations, it's another dreamer. Then when you want sharp, close down to f/4 and it's on par with the modern lenses. All this on a budget! The FL tends to run in the $150 range in good condition.
It really is beautiful.
Wow amazing rendition and "glow" crazy expensive on eBay :(
Can you do a review of the Canon 50mm f1.4 ltm Japanese Summilux?
I equate it to LPs V CD's for music. I usually get my vintage lenses for not a lot of money so don't suffer buyers remorse.
you seem like a very cool person
I want the noctilux 0.95
Matt Mitchell, Agree! I also prefer Noctilux 50mm. Had tried one couple days ago and the result is stunning!
I’ve been into professional photography since 1972. This lens makes the bokeh overly soft in my opinion. I much prefer my old f1.2 and 1.4 Rokkor 58mm. 2-3K for this ? Lollllllll
But if you love it , that’s all that counts.
The Leica Monochrom and the vintage lenses just gives us a great "filmy" look. Just like the old days. Maybe that is why they are so fantastic - in these over sharpened iPhone image times. I wish I could afford it ;)
Thank You for that!! I had no clue about it and it's already on my wish list, I mean look at those bokeh, dreamy & sublime, esp the green tree leaves. Wow, a feel apart from the rest and such a departure from what I shoot normally. Sorry for your amazing puppy boy ...yes, they are people too!! ha!
Beautiful lens! Love your reviews. I've purchased several lenses and cameras based off of your reviews. Keep em coming!
What about the canon f0.75 50mm
Maybe do a comparison?
Well, it's greta but too expensive. Easy.
kind a creepy.. the end result of the images..
Reminds me of the Leica Thambar look.
The b&w photo of the dog in the park near the bench is great.
Awesome lens and great results in your hands.
Great review, lovely lens
Should I get this one or the Nikkor 58mm 1.2 Noc?
If you are serious (and crazy), get the Nikon.
Ivan Ortiz Nikkor 58mm 1.2 is the sharpest lens in the world at f/2.0.
Ivan Ortiz or you can get Nikon 58mm 0.95 new lens. But you will not have strange looking bokeh such as 50mm 0.95 Canon
that Depends on which camera you have or want the Nikon z Mount lenses only Works on z body's ,but some photographers have the delusion that sharpness is the only thing that matters in a good composed Picture and that is the only thing they see sharpnes
If the Canon LTM 50mm 0.95 was made from Nikon, people would praise it.
👍
You say it’s “dreamy” but can’t prove it. Compare it to a 50mm kit lens
You can't tell how different the lens renders from a standard lens?
50mm kit lens not enough blurry background.
Interesting lens!
You're such a human.
Very interesting!
Vintage Nikkor is the crem ! canon the average
Hey, im looking an adapter for this lens to sony a7 mount. Can someone help me please?
You have to have the mount converted to Leica M to use it on anything else than the Canon P is was made to be used on, then you can get a simple M to Sony adapter
Rip Sony A7 plastic lens mount.
Hello! What's this lens like stopped down?
Just like wide open - it's a pig. There are two major impairments to the optical performance of this lens. (1) It has huge optical aberrations outside the narrow image center. These do improve at smaller apertures, but will never clear up to standards even of more normal lenses of the '60s. (2) It suffers from huge curvature of field. This means that the plane of focus is not flat as it should be, rather, it is significantly curved - Imagine the focus in the shape of a shallow bowl where the focus curves back toward the camera as you move away from the image center. This is constant and unaffected by aperture. Also the suggestion that you can just go on ebay and pick up this lens to fit your digital camera is nonsense. The TV version shown here came in a "C" mount for tv and movie cameras. They have no focus cam, which is not a problem if you can mount it to a non-rangefinder camera. Finding a way to mount it is a problem. A few of the TV versions were cut up , cammed and remounted to fit Leica M mounts back in the '60. The job was expensive, more $2,000 in today's dollars. If you sit on ebay, you might see one of those turn up every couple of years or so.
@@randallstewart175 Great analysis. For what it's worth, I found a dream lens about a year ago, probably a few months after writing this comment. I love it. I don't use it for anything requiring clinical performance, just for jobs where a creative look is desired, or for personal creative uses.
I don't have any problem with the aberrations you describe since I don't really notice them, although I don't doubt you at all. Something I've noticed that most reviews of this lens don't say is that it has a film-like quality to its rendering. I'm using it on a Panasonic S1 and every picture looks like it was shot on film. I think its because it has a hazy look to the images that is similar to the grainy look you get from film.
Also, I find the comment that it's hard to adapt to a digital camera at odds with my experience. I got it in M-mount I think and found an adapter online that allows me to put it on my L-mount Panasonic S1. Granted, maybe it's only adaptable to L mount cams.
@@farid1406 The problem here is that the lens only came in a proprietary Canon mount used only by the 7 and 7S RF bodies, and the later TV lenses, which were adapted by Canon with a C-mount but not rangefinder cam for movie and TV cameras (just to unload the backed up inventory of these lenses after 1967) If you lens has a Leica M-mount, then some poor bastard paid a fortune to have it adapted by the one repair shop in NYC which did that job. Lucky you, 'cause there are probably less that 2 dozen such lenses in original existence.
@@randallstewart175 wow you know your stuff. I don't know if it's Leica M, I can check later. I just know that it was really easy to adapt to my Leica L because there's a shop on Ebay that sells adapters. It was maybe $100 for the adapter.
waw, it is indeed a magical lens with a magical price tag
Magical in the sense that you have to be a Wizard to afford it
Very soft wide open, ugly bokeh, chromatic aberration is very present...
2k for this? lol
It’s 2k cos there aren’t that many of them made, you can get a Mitakon lens that’s the same for like $800
That's ugly for a bokeh.
I take a lot of pictures and enjoy my photography a lot.
It is my opinion that China, Russia and America are going to war, as a matter of fact we are already at war with them in many ways.
If you don’t believe this then why have so many companies already been going through cyber attacks and many have been put out of business completely.
So I have to ask the question why are so many Americans still buying Chinese goods and products daily?
Why are so many Chinese products promoted on Facebook and other social media outlets.
Why do I see all kinds of Photography gear and Lens from China promoted on RUclips?
Why do I see so many folks bragging about their new Chinese lens on all the photography forums?
Obviously we are now living with generations of people who never watched the death tolls each night from Vietnam!
Obviously we are living with people that haven’t a clue how many lives were lost at Pearl Harbor and World War Two.
Do you have to see blood and bodies out in the street before you get it people.
Wake Up!

And Vietnam was an all american war against a distant and unrelated sovereign state.
And i consider myself neutral because i collect only canon tv lenses. My bokh beats yours😊
Anything this lens does Photoshop can do just as well. I guess in the days of film it was the only way to get this effect.
you will spend the rest of your life masking in photoshop. I wish you good luck.
@@qapturenlfilms Nah Photoshop is easy :)
@@RichardsModellingAdventures Nah you can't adequately create bokeh in Photoshop
LMAO.... photoshop does not produce natural bokeh looks
It is not really about bokeh and more about amount of light come into the sensor
thank you !
